She was a graduate of McPherson College with a degree in home economics and was a high school teacher prior to her marriage to John Joseph Mingenback, D. D. S., on March 4, 1944 at Denver, Colorado.  He died April 15, 2001.  A devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, Mrs. Mingenback was a Great Bend resident since 1950.  She loved learning and had a wide range of interests from sewing, cooking, gardening, studying the stock market and investments, ballroom dancing and traveling.  Never tiring of trying a new hobby or staying informed about local and national news, she was an avid reader and fan of national current affairs broadcasts.

 

Mrs. Mingenback was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church, Episcopal Church Women, PEO Chapter DU, Progress Club, and Bloomer Girls, having held many leadership positions within the service organizations throughout her life.

Robert “Bob” Ned Brown

Robert “Bob” Ned Brown, 65, died unexpectedly January 5, 2013, at his home in Sublette.

He was born December 30, 1947, at Great Bend, to Ned M. and Harriet F. Grove Brown.  A former resident of Larned, he was a 1965 graduate of Larned High School and Hutchinson Juco and attended Fort Hays State University for two years.  He was a well respected master artisan and carpenter.

He belonged to the First Presbyterian Church, Larned.

Survivors include mother, Harriet Brown, Prairie Village, Kansas, one brother, Michael G. Brown and wife D.J., Kansas City, Missouri, one sister, Debra Jan Converse and husband Arlyn, Leawood, Kansas, three children, Amy, Lucas and Sean, 2 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, and friend Roxanne Beach.

He was preceded in death by his father Ned M. Brown.

A celebration of life service will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 10, 2013 at  Morell Funeral Home, with Pastor Jack Singer presiding.  Inurnment will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned.

Helen Elizabeth (Davis) Starr

Helen Elizabeth (Davis) Starr, 91, passed away peacefully January 7, 2013, at Larned Healthcare Center, Larned.

She was born December 15, 1921 at Wiley, Colorado, the daughter of James Columbus Davis and Helen Irene Stahlman Davis.  She was a retired schoolteacher, business owner and member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Shiley Homemakers, and American Legion Auxiliary all of Burdett.  She also served as a Girl Scout Leader in Elk City, Ks, Grandma Rose at Pawnee Heights West School and was a officer for the McPherson College Alumni for a number of years.

Helen graduated high school at age 16 and graduated from McPherson College at age 20.  She taught school at Zook, Ks, Rixey, Colorado, and Kipp, Ks.  On August 13, 1945, she married H. Francis Starr in Las Animas, Colorado, after a five year courtship by mail while Francis served in the US Army in Europe.  Helen continued to teach at Kipp, while Francis attended Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina.  The couple returned to Colorado and farmed for five years and started their family.  She was called to return to Kipp and Francis returned to KWU for his teaching block, Helen stayed home with the children while Francis began his teaching career in Elk City, Ks,  The family moved to Burdett, Ks. in 1964 with Helen teaching third grade and Francis teaching science. After six years at Burdett and Pawnee Heights Schools, Helen taught two years in the Cunningham School District.  The couple bought the Standard Service Station in Burdett in 1977 and operated their business until they retired in 1986.  Helen served as City Clerk of Burdett during that time as well as serving actively in every club and organization in Burdett.  She was well known for her holy pies (they all went to church) and encouraging her children in all their creative endeavors, including unicycle riding, knitting, music and sewing.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Francis, infant daughter, Cheryl Jean and sister, Ruth Durham.

She is survived by her brother, H. Virgil Davis, Aurora, Colorado, and her children, Deborah and husband Alan Coddington, Olathe, Janis and husband Bill Fairchild, Larned, Elaine and husband Bob Voos, Russell, Ks, and son, Russell and wife Maria Starr, McPherson, eight grandchildren, eight step grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and numerous step great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 11, 2013, at United Methodist Church, Burdett, with Pastor Brad McCoy presiding.  Cremation will follow the service.  Inurnment will be in Browns Grove Cemetery, Burdett, at a later date.  Visitation will be Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Morell Funeral Home, Larned.

Irene Virginia Boxberger

Irene Virginia Boxberger was born on November 27, 1916 and grew up on the family farm in Russell County Kansas, the daughter of Emanuel and Mary Elizabeth Milberger Dumler. She attended Bunker Hill School and later Russell High School, from which she graduated in 1932. She died January 7, 2013 at her home in Great Bend.

After graduation, she worked at the Russell County Wheat Board and later at the Home State Bank in Russell, where she was the Secretary to the Bank President, C.W. Shaffer.

In April 1939, Irene married Carl William Boxberger, son of Henry George Boxberger and Eugenia Becker Boxberger of Russell County Kansas. They lived in Russell and later in Dodge City, where their son Gary was born. They moved to Great Bend where their son Donald was born and later, their daughter Linda.

While Irene was a homemaker after marriage, she took meticulous care of the household accounts, and at various times the books of the family’s business. She was proud of the skills she had learned during her working years and was happy to use them for her family benefit. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School, Mid-Week Bible School, and served in her Church Circle.

Irene and Carl were serious players in couples’ bridge clubs and Irene also enjoyed playing in ladies’ bridge clubs. She had loved playing cards and games since childhood. She also enjoyed playing golf. Irene loved to travel. Besides traveling with Carl to visit family, for decades she enjoyed an annual trip to Colorado with women friends. Irene made frequent trips in Kansas, elsewhere in the US, and toured overseas with friends.

In her last years, Irene appreciated and enjoyed the care and companionship of in-home caregivers. She was grateful for their care and for the opportunity to stay in her home, where she enjoyed watching her backyard bird feeders and flower gardens.

Irene was preceded in death by: her parents; son, Donald Boxberger; husband, Carl W. Boxberger; brother Dale Emanuel Dumler; sister Whilmetta Horn; and niece Karen Rein Pendland. She was also preceded in death by in-laws Ed Ethem; Virginia and Eddie Rein; and Max Horn.

She is survived by: her son, Gary Boxberger; daughter, Linda Boxberger and her husband Awad A. Abdelgadir; grandson David Emanuel Boxberger and his wife Barbara, great-granddaughters Alexandra Irene and Christina and great-grandson Maxwell; granddaughter Marianne Gold and her husband Irwin and great-granddaughter Lauren; and grandson John Boxberger. She is also survived by: nephew Bill Horn and his companion June Murray; niece Lynne Royce and her husband Paul Petzold; nephew Kirk Kreie; niece Audrey Rein Vaughn and her husband Stan Vaughn, great-nephew Mark Vaughn, great-niece Whitney Vaughn; great-niece Conner Pendland and great-nephew Brett Pendland; and nephew Henry EthemShe is survived by in-laws Joanne and James Kreie, Ruth Boxberger, and Esther Ethem.

Roy Dale “Rocky” Ford

Roy Dale “Rocky” Ford, 63, passed away on December 29, 2012 in Alamosa, Colorado. A
longtime Alamosa and Great Bend resident, Rocky was born February 27, 1949, in Great
Bend, Kansas, to Ora and Opal Mae (Griffin) Ford. He was a cattle and buffalo rancher and
worked horses for many years. He was a carpenter and plumber, working in construction with
his brother, Bud.

Rocky is survived by his partner, Debbie Dawson of the home, his daughter, Betsy Nagle,
Joplin, MO, and his brothers Marvin Ford and wife Dee of Great Bend, and Bud Ford and
wife JoAnn of Boulder, CO. He is also survived by stepchildren, Adam Shull, Kelly Shull,
Amanda Jackson, Emily Jackson, and Hunter Jackson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Ellen Ora Sparks.

Cremation was selected and a memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January
12, 2013 at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, Kansas, with a time of fellowship at Ernie’s
Bar and Grill following.
