Sister Louella Staab

Sister Louella Staab, 81, died Sunday, November 4, 2012, in the Dominican Sisters’ convent infirmary, Great Bend.  Born October 8, 1931, in Catherine, Kansas, as Maybell Ann Catherine Staab, Sister Louella was the daughter of the late Alexius and Celestine (Weigel) Staab. She entered the Dominican Sisters’ Community in Great Bend December 6, 1953, and pronounced her first vows June 13, 1956. She celebrated fifty years of religious profession in 2006.

Sister Louella ministered in the hospital offices of St. Joseph Memorial, Larned; St. Rose, Great Bend; Sacred Heart, Lamar, Colo.; St. Catherine, Garden City; and Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend; from 1956 to 1968 and in the finance office of the Great Bend Dominican Sisters. She is most remembered as the accountant and Executive Director of Cedar Park Place in Great Bend from 1980 to 1992. She also worked in the Chancery office of the Diocese of Dodge City and as Administrator of Mary Elizabeth Maternity Home in Hays. She retired to the convent infirmary in Great Bend in 2003.

Sister Louella is survived by her Dominican Sisters of Peace religious community; five brothers: Robert Staab of Salina, KS; Norman Staab of Hays, KS; Roger Staab of Hays, KS; Ervell Staab of Omaha, NE; and Dennis Staab of Olathe, KS; and two sisters: Erlene Leiker of Olathe, KS; and Ruby Mae Nowak of Russell, KS. Sister Louella was preceded in death by one brother, William Staab.

Sister Louella’s body will be brought to the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend, at 4:00 p.m., Monday, November 5, 2012, where it will lie in state until the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 7, 2012, with Rev. Ted Skalsky and Rev. Francis Oroffa MSP concelebrating. A wake service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 6, 2012. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery. Both the wake and the funeral will be held at the convent. Friends may call at the convent on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the wake service and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until service time.

Barbara J. Bradford

Rozel – Barbara J. Bradford, 72, died November 3, 2012 at home with her family by her side after a long battle of fighting cancer.

She was born July 17, 1940 in Hutchinson, the daughter of Thomas Virgil and Violet Marie Waggoner Murphy.

She was a 1958 graduate of Hutchinson High School. She married Clarence LeRoy Bradford on January 4, 1964, in Hutchinson, KS. She retired from Larned State Hospital as a Dietary Supervisor in 2003. Barbara was a member of the United Methodist Woman (UMW). 

Survivors include; her husband, Clarence LeRoy of the home; a son, Byron Bradford and wife Wimon, Peyton, Colorado, a daughter, Dina Gillett and husband Gary of Surprise, AZ., brothers, Michael Murphy, Hutchinson, and Ronald Murphy and wife Carol of Banning, California; four granddaughters, Courtlyn, Kaydee and Gyllian Robinson and Bein Bradford; one great grandson Adryel and one great granddaughter to come Annyston, and many nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers; Tom, Gary, Glenn, Melton, Jackie and James Murphy and one sister; Janice Strickler 

Funeral Service will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church of Rozel with Pastor Bernice Ludlum presiding. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned. Burial will be in the Rozel Cemetery.

Sister Mary Rose Engel

Sister Mary Rose Engel, 93, died Tuesday, October 30, 2012, in the Dominican Sisters’ convent infirmary, Great Bend.

Born August 22, 1919, inNess City,Kansas, as Mary Engel, Sister Mary Rose was the daughter of the late Anton and Pauline Hertel Engel. She entered the Dominican Sisters’ Community September 28, 1934, and pronounced her first vows August 12, 1937. She celebrated seventy-five years of religious profession this year.

Sister Mary Rose ministered as a teacher in parochial elementary schools all her ministerial life 1939 – 1992. She was sometimes both teacher and principal in seven of these schools including Dubuque, Willowdale, St. Patrick Great Bend, Larned, St. Leo, St. Patrick Kingman, and St Peter Schulte – all in Kansas. When she moved to the Motherhouse in 1998 she served in many community services such as receptionist, sacristan, chauffeur for the sisters, and gardener, among others. She especially loved to care for the rose garden. She retired in 2005.

Sister Mary Rose Engel is survived by her Dominican Sisters of Peace religious community and one sister, Jane Penka of Rancho Mirage CA.

Sister Mary Rose’s body will be brought to the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend, on Wednesday, October 31, 2012, at 4:00 p.m., where it will lie in state until the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 2, 2012, with Rev. Reginald Urban and Rev. Francis Oroffa MSP concelebrating. A wake service will be held Thursday, November 1, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. Friends may call at the convent Thursday, November 1, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the wake service at 7:00 p.m. and Friday morning until the time of the funeral.Burial will be in the Sisters’ResurrectionCemetery. Mary Alice Grubbs

Larned Mary Alice Grubbs, 80, died Oct. 26, 2012 at the Larned Healthcare Center, Larned, KS after battling the effects of Alzheimer’s for 6 years.

She was born Nov. 24, 1931 at McPherson.  The daughter of Carl E. “Mick” and Lillian Richerson Heilman.  She graduated from Graham High School, Graham, Texas in 1949.  A longtime Larned area resident, she was retired from 27 years in the local savings and loan business.

She belonged to the First United Methodist Church, Larned where she played the piano for the early church service on Sunday mornings and also  served as Chairman of Gifts and Memorials, Finance, Staff Parish and Trustee Committees, was Sunday School Literature Secretary for many years, member of the Chancel Choir and the United Methodist Women.  She belonged to the Larned Women’s Bowling Association and Larned Business and Professional Women for many years serving as officers in both.

On June 29, 1947 she married Robert L. Grubbs, Wichita Falls, Texas. They later divorced.

Survivors include; son, Tommy Dale Grubbs, Grand Prairie, Texas; a daughter, Carol Elaine Carlson, Larned; five grandchildren, Cory Grubbs, Gastonia, North Carolina, Elizabeth McDonald, Larned, Brent Grubbs, Red Oak, Texas, Michelle Castaneda and Amanda Grubbs, Midlothian, Texas; and eight great grandchildren, Lacie, Savananah and Abbie Grubbs, Gastonia, North Carolina, Caleb McDonald, Larned, Jayden Grubbs, Logan and Madison Castaneda, Midlothian, Texas and Colby Cannon, Red Oak, Texas.  She was looking forward to the birth of 3 additional great grandsons within the next 6 months.

She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Glen Grubbs and a sister, Sonja L. Heilman Knight Gunderson and former husband.

Funeral will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel with Bethann Black presiding.   Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the mortuary.  Burial will be in the Great Bend City Cemetery.

Sister Ruth Klein

Sister Ruth Klein, 97, died Saturday, October 13, 2012, in the Dominican Sisters of Peace convent infirmary,
Great Bend.

Born January 22, 1915, in Lincoln NE, as Ruth Rose Klein, Sister Ruth was the daughter of the late Anthony
and Mary Helen Hoffman Klein. She entered the Dominican Sisters’ Community in Great Bend July 2, 1930,
and pronounced her first vows August 17, 1933. She celebrated seventy-five years of religious profession in
2008.

Sister Ruth began her ministerial life as a teacher of grades 1 – 4 in 1934, but she will be most remembered
for her education and ministry in music. She taught music lessons for many years to students of grade school
and especially to high school and college age young religious of her religious community. She instructed
in Gregorian chant and other forms of liturgical music as well as playing organ and piano. She even taught
liturgical music in Jamaica for several years. Sister Ruth was also accomplished in cooking and sewing and had
designed and made liturgical vestments as well as clothing.

Sister Ruth is survived by her Dominican Sisters of Peace community and two sisters: Sister Marie and Sister
Marie Antoinette both of the Great Bend Dominican Sisters. Her cousin, Sister Mary Ann Klein is also a
member of the Dominican Sisters of Peace in Great Bend.

Sister Ruth’s body will be brought to the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600
Broadway, Great Bend, on Monday, October 15, 2012, at 4:00 p.m., where it will lie in state until the Liturgy of
Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 17, 2012, with Rev. Wesley Schawe, Rev. Ted Stoecklein,
and Rev Frances Oroffa MSP concelebrating. A wake service will be held Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at 7:00

He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, and Knights of Columbus Council #862,
Olmitz. He loved to restore old furniture and tinker, being known to be able to fix almost anything. Above all, he loved
God and his family.
