Connie Schneweis, 64, died March 2, 2012, at her Great Bend, Kansas, residence. She was born August 17, 1947 at Great Bend, Kansas, to Albert Anton & Sarah Josephine (Smith) Maes. She married Larry L. Schneweis June 14, 1969, at Holy Name Catholic Church, Bushton, Kansas, he survives. Mrs. Schneweis was a Great Bend, Kansas resident since 1969, coming from rural Bushton, Kansas. She was the vocal music and band  instructor for Holy Family School, and the director of the bell choir and an organist at St. Patrick Catholic Church, all of Great Bend. She was also the director of Kindermusik and a private piano instructor.
Mrs. Schneweis was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society, Kansas Music Educators Association, National Pastoral Musicians Association, Central Kansas Piano Teachers League, Kansas Music Teachers Association State Board Auditions Chairman, Kindermusik Association, and the National Catholic Teachers Association. In addition to her professional achievements, she had a great passion for her music ministry, continual work with the Catholic Church, and shaping young lives with the influence of God through music. She was a wonderful wife and mother, family was always her first priority, right behind her commitment to God. Connie enjoyed traveling, going to her class reunions, and attending all grandchildren’s activities. She was always on the go, and impacted all who crossed her path with the Light of Christ. She leaves us with her famous words, “Upward and Onward”. Our farewell message to her; well done, good and faithful servant! We will be patiently waiting to see you once again.

Survivors include her husband, Larry L. Schneweis, of the home; one son, Troy Schneweis and his wife Melissa of Topeka, KS; one daughter, Denise Wilkens of Great Bend; two sisters: Nancy Maes-Simonetti of Hutchinson, and Luann Bird and her husband Roy of Topeka; two granddaughters: Madison Schneweis and Ryen Wilkens.

Altar Society Rosary will be at 4 p.m., Sunday, March 4, 2012 at Bryant Funeral Home. Vigil Service will be held at 7 p.m., Sunday, March 4, 2012 at St Patrick Catholic Church. Sister Marietta Urban

Name of Deceased: Sister Marietta Urban

 

Sister Marietta Urban, 83, died Thursday, March 1, 2012, in the Dominican Sisters’ Convent Infirmary, Great Bend, Kansas.

Born October 22, 1928, in Loretto, Kansas, as Viola Margaret Urban, Sister Marietta was the daughter of the late Jacob and Catherine Suppes Urban. She entered the Dominican Sisters’ Community in Great Bend, Kansas, August 31, 1942, and pronounced her first vows August 13, 1946. She celebrated sixty-five years of religious profession in 2011.

Between her years as a teacher and/or principal in Catholic grade schools of Kansas, Sister Marietta spent four years as a missionary in Nigeria, West Africa, and eight years as a secondary teacher in Malawi, Africa. She also served in hospital pastoral care and as coordinator of the motherhouse in Great Bend. Sister Marietta, who “loves working with people,” more recently served the elders of Kansas as Director of Harvest House in the Diocese of Wichita, Kansas, and as a Senior Companion with the Mental Health Foundation of Wichita. Sister Marietta was currently residing at the convent infirmary in Great Bend.

Sister Marietta is survived by her Dominican Sisters of Peace religious community; two sisters: Florine Meister of Great Bend and Esther Wanzel of Davenport, Iowa; and her beloved nieces and nephews.

Sister Marietta’s body will be brought to the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend, on Saturday March 3, at 4:00 p.m. where it will lie in state until the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 5, with Rev. Reginald A. Urban presiding. A Wake service will be held Sunday, March 4, at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery. Both the wake and the funeral will be held at the convent.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in honor of Sister Marietta may be sent to Dominican Sisters of Peace, 2320 Airport Dr, Columbus OH  43219-2098.

Violet “Vi” Smith

Larned – Violet “Vi” Smith-Snyder, 88, died February 26, 2012 at her home, Larned.

She was born December 17, 1923 in Larned, the daughter of James W. and Ketha Blanche Hanon Kitterman. A lifetime Larned resident she was a Beautician for 25 years, a Nurses Aide for 10 years and a Receptionist for 10 years.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, the Food Pantry at the First Christian Church and the VFW Auxiliary, all of Larned.

On September 22, 1940 she married Bernard D. Smith at Larned, he passed away August 24, 1968. On June 4, 1973 she married Guy Snyder at Larned, he died August 31, 2005.

Survivors include; four sons, Bernard L. ”Lanny” Smith, Kirbyville, Missouri, David L. Smith, Gregory F. Smith and Timothy C. Smith, all of San Diego, California, eleven grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by; three brothers, Ivan Kitterman, James Kitterman and an Infant, and two sisters; Zona Dell Keast and an Infant. Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned with the Pastor Dan Lundgren presiding. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the Mortuary. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned.

He served during World War II as a Tec 5 in the Army Air Corps.

Mrs. Hoffhaus was a Yukon, Oklahoma resident since September 2011 coming from Great Bend, where she had resided since 1934, coming from Albert.

She was a member of Community Christian Church, Great Bend.

Mrs. Hoffhaus was strong in her faith and cherished her relationship with Jesus Christ. She loved to play cards, cook, host family dinners, read, and listen to country classics on her TV, especially Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty.  She was deeply devoted to her family.
