Flora Virginia Moore

Larned – Flora Virginia Moore, 90, died February 2, 2012, at the Larned Healthcare Center, Larned.

She was born January 20, 1922, in Larned, the daughter of Everett Thomas and Edith Mae Beebe Nicholson, a lifetime area resident she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the First Christian Church and Christian Women Fellowship both of Larned.

On December 8, 1947, she married Paul Heaton Moore at Dodge City. He survives. Other survivors include: 2 sons, Allan Wayne Moore and companion Robyn, Wendell, North Carolina and Wayne Allan and wife Christie Moore, Frederick, Maryland; a daughter, Catherine and husband Chuck Rapp, Salina; THREE grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Francis Everett, John Wesley, Floyd Thomas and Melvin Arthur Nicholson; a sister, Ethel Mae Taylor and a grandson, Troy Rapp. Funeral will be at 10:30a.m. Tuesday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, with Pastor Dan Lundgren presiding. Visitation will be from 1p.m. to 8p.m. Sunday and from 9a.m. to 8p.m. Monday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned.

Ruth I. Steffen

Larned – Ruth I. Steffen, 78, died February 1, 2012, at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend.

She was born August 11, 1933, at Ellinwood; the daughter of Melvin Cornelius and Dora Flanders Kasselman.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Rural Life of Farm Bureau, Country Club, Fort Larned Historical Society, VFW Auxiliary and Gem Gals unit all of Larned, KAEOP and the Pinochle group of Burdett for
50 years.

On March 30, 1952, she married Vern Steffen at Zook, Kansas. He survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Tony Steffen and wife Christin, Wichita and Craig Steffen and wife Janice, Lenexa; two brothers, Ralph Kasselman, Ponca City, Oklahoma and Max Kasselman, Andale; a sister,
Linda Parr, Larned, and four grandchildren; Amanda Steffen, Samantha Steffen, Brock Steffen and Layne Steffen.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harlan Kasselman and Robert Kasselman and a grandson Kevin Steffen.

Funeral will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, Larned with Pastor Dennis Scheibmeir presiding. Visitation will be from 9a.m. to 8p.m. Friday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in
Brown’s Grove Cemetery, Burdett.

Richard F. Pope

Richard F. Pope – of Great Bend, KS.  Formerly of Newark Valley, NY passed away on February 1, 2012.  Born November 4, 1934 to Lyman and Cora (Spicer) Pope.  On June 23, 1956 he married Joan D. Robinson whom he is survived by.  Other survivors include three daughters: Cathy (Stuart) Yetter, Newark Valley, NY; Lori (Colin) Hammeke, Great Bend, KS; Vicki (Charles) Spina, Larned, KS.  Six grandchildren:  Aaron (Becky) Hammeke, Daniel (Sally) Spina, Ryan (Megan) Hammeke, Jessica Spina, Abigail Hammeke, and Elizabeth Yetter and three great grandchildren: Ethan, Beth, and Emma.

He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter Lisa Joleen Hammeke.

Shiela Sutton Schmidt

NAME OF DECEASED:  Shiela Sutton Schmidt 

Shiela Sutton Schmidt, 100, died January 26, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Center, Howard, South Dakota. She was born December 28, 1911 at Salina, Kansas, the daughter of Lewis and Elizabeth (Smith) Sutton. She grew up in Salina, graduating from Salina High School in 1929.  She earned her A. D. in History from Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina in 1933 and her A. M. in music from Colorado State College of Education at Greeley in 1946. Mrs. Schmidt then taught music at various schools in central Kansas, including Albert, Heizer, Countryside, Shady Grove, Holyrood, and Pawnee Rock. She also gave private piano lessons and was very involved in school productions, including costume and set design.

She met her future husband, Harold B. Schmidt, while they were both teaching at Pawnee Rock in 1946. They were married December 28, 1946 and made their life together on the Schmidt family homestead near Pawnee Rock. Together they had one daughter, Shiela Katharine and helped raise Harold’s niece Patricia. She was an active member of both the Pawnee Rock and Madison, South Dakota communities. She participated in a wide range of clubs and activities such as Delta Kappa Gamma, Santa Fe Trail Association, Questers group, literacy program, alumni associations, and church groups. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Madison.

Survivors include two grandchildren, Jason Karlin and his wife Natasha, Portsmouth, New Hampshire; and Stephanie Terwilliger and her husband Jason, Winfred, South Dakota; five grandchildren, Ava Karlin, Gage Karlin, Cassidy Terwilliger, Harris Terwilliger, and Autumn Terwilliger; special friend, Helen Graham, Madison, South Dakota; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; her daughter, Shiela “Katharine” Presuhn; one niece, Patricia Crawford; one sister, Maxine Stockebrand; and many dear friends.

Graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 2, 2012 at Pawnee Rock Cemetery. The Reverend Tom Sheldon will officiate. There will be no visitation. Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend, is in charge of local arrangements.

Delores June Clawson

Larned

Delores June Clawson, 84, died January 29, 2012 at Hays Medical Center, Hays.

She was born June 28, 1927, at Great Bend the daughter of Joseph and Katie Rowe Koelsch.  A longtime resident of Larned, she was a Homemaker and had worked at the Old Blue Goose and Harvest Inn Restaurants.

She belonged to Nazarene Church, Larned and was a helper with the 4-H Home Builders Club, she also enjoyed bingo, checkers and old maids.

She married Virgil M. Clawson, March 24, 1955 at Newkirk, Oklahoma.  He died on August 11, 2007.

Survivors include two sons, Larry and wife Grace, Virgil and wife Tia both of Larned, four daughters, Beverly Boman and husband Glen, Rozel, Irene Hopkins and husband Maurice, Betty Ryan and husband Sam and Mary Blide and husband Brian all of Larned, 19 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Koelsch and four sisters, Evelyn Clawson, Katherine Clawson, Thelma Ritter and Fern Bennett.

Funeral Service will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 2, 2012, at Morell Funeral Home, Larned, Pastor Leroy Lyon presiding.                                   Friends may call from Noon until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and from 9:00 a.m. until service time Thursday at Morell Funeral Home, Larned.  Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned.

Roger Alan Caldwell

Larned – Roger Alan Caldwell, 69, died January 29, 2012, at Hays
Medical Center, Hays.

He was born January 12, 1943, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the son of
Franklin Eugene and Lucille Hicks Caldwell. He was an account
Executive for Fox 49, in Tallahassee, Florida.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, a member and
board member of the Larned Country Club, both of Larned the
Qunicy Country Club, Florida, and he served in the United States
Navy.

On February 16, 1990, he married Charlotte Boris in Tallahassee,
Florida. She died January 12, 2008.

Survivors include: a son, Alan Caldwell and wife Jackie, Tulsa,
Oklahoma; two daughters, Kimberly Zardas and husband Eric,
Tulsa, Oklahoma, Kathy Lincoln and husband Bob, East Taunton,
Massachusetts; a sister, Marilyn Bell, Larned and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Clarence Allen
and James Franklin Caldwell.

Funeral will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday at the United Methodist
Church, Larned, with Rev. Bill Fitzgerrel presiding. Visitation will
be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Beckwith
Mortuary, Larned. Cremation will take place after the service.

Glenn N. Johnson

Larned – Glenn N. Johnson, 90, died January 22, 2012, at South Wind Hospice, Pratt.

He was born October 29, 1921, at Conway Springs, KS. the son of Glenn Newton and Lola A. Clemmer
Johnson. He was a locksmith.

He belonged to the United Methodist, VFW, American Legion, Good Samaritan, was in the United
States Army and was awarded the Medal of Valor.

On June 11, 1940, he married Olive D. Smiley at Ness City. She died June 19, 2009.

Survivors include: a son, Robert G. Johnson and wife Dorothy, Alden, MN; three daughters, Sherrill
D. Sallee and husband Robert, Gloria Youngdahl, Glenda Eye and husband Rod, all of Larned; eight
grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren.

Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Larned with Pastor Wade
Russell presiding and Military Honors provided by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Memorial Graveside Service
will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Ash Valley Cemetery, Ash Valley.

He married Jane Olsen October 31, 1959 at Sparta, Wisconsin. 

Mr. Bemis was a lifetime Great Bend, Kansas resident, and was owner and operator of Bemis Construction, Inc.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving as captain with the Army Corps of Engineers. 

Mr. Bemis was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Beta Theta Pi, ROTC at Kansas State University, Kansas Contractors Association, Association of Oklahoma General Contractors, Kansas Brick and Tile Board of Directors, Kansas State Board of Technical Engineers.
