Norman G. Seller

GREAT BEND – Norman G. Seller, 87, passed away Feb. 14, 2019, at Medicalodges of Great Bend. He was born Nov. 1, 1931 to Elmer and Myrtle (Schneider) Seller.  Norman married Edna (Lively) and were later divorced.

A Great Bend resident, coming from Liberal in 2014, Norman was a driller in the oilfield and a lifetime member of the V.F.W Post 9139 in Ellis County. He was stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict with the United States Army, earning the rank of PFC (T).  He also was an avid gardener, planted tomatoes that grew to 13 feet and Oklahoma sugar cane that he used for shade and wind block for his garden and house.

Survivors include, one son, Bill Seller and wife Sara of Oberlin; one daughter Dianna Gosselin of Plainville; six grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and infant brother, Carl H. Seller.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 21, 2019, at the Wildmead Cemetery in Nickerson, with Larry Schumacher presiding. Military rites will be conducted by the Ft. Riley Honor Guard.  Memorials have been suggested to the Wildmead Cemetery, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Gilberto Cruz

Gilberto Cruz “Mexican Joe”, 85, died Thursday February 14, 2019 at the Kearny County Hospital in Lakin, Kansas. He was born February 4, 1934 in Providencia, Durango, Mexico the son of Jorge Cruz and Margarita Chavez.

Mr. Cruz was born and raised in Mexico. He married Ignacia Ramirez on February 10, 1953 at Cd Juarez, Mexico. They later moved to Leviland Texas in 1967 and later to the Garden City/Deerfield area to raise their family. He had worked as a cowboy for most of his adult life. He was a jokester and enjoyed all time spent with family and beloved dog, Chuvi.

He was preceded in death by his Wife-Ignacia Cruz, Parents-Jorge Cruz and Margarita Chavez & 3 Siblings-Ruben Cruz, Lucrecia Cruz and Romana Cruz.

Mona Maxine Oller

Nixa, MissouriMona Maxine Oller, 89, passed away February 2, 2019, at Nixa Care Home in Nixa, Missouri.

Survivors include one daughter Deborah Rumage of Springfield, Missouri; three grandchildren, Amy Pentecost, Bobby Oller and Susan Leech; two great grandchildren, Jeffery Peterson and Mishika Pentecost. She was preceded in death by a son, George Oller; and several brothers and sisters.

Michael W. “Mike” Dirreen

Dateline – Hutchinson 

Michael W. “Mike” Dirreen, 48, died February 9, 2019, at his home in Hutchinson, surrounded by his friends, Keno, and his family.

He was born March 13, 1970, in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of Bill and Ruth Ann (Wahaus) Dirreen.

Mike enjoyed cooking and did so at the Redwing Store, Redwing, Kansas, The Elks Lodge, Goodland, Kansas, and most recently the Applewood Grill, South Hutchinson. He also loved being around animals especially his dog Sassy Girl.

He is survived by his father and stepmother, Bill & Connie Dirreen of Hoisington; brother, Richard “Rich” Dirreen of Rush Center; 5 nieces, 2 great nephews, and 2 great nieces.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Ann Dirreen.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, February 16, 2019, at Hoisington Cemetery, officiated by Ron Bailey.  There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place.

William Keith “Jake” Lindsay

William Keith “Jake” Lindsay, 90, died February 7, 2019, at Menorah Medical Center, Overland Park, Kansas.  He was born September 5, 1928, in Hoisington, Kansas, the son of Charles G. and Carolyn A. “Lena” (Reimer) Lindsay.  Jake served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956.

A lifetime Barton County resident, Jake was a farmer, but had also been a pipeline worker in his younger years.

He was a member of the Camping Squares of Kansas; the Swinging Stars Square Dance Club, and was an officer for the Kansas Square Dancing Association.

On February 13, 1965, he married Georgetta Lyon, in Hoisington, Kansas. She died on October 22, 1981.  He then married Marilyn K. Hulse on May 3, 1985, in Great Bend, Kansas. She survives.

Jake had no children of his own, but became a father to two separate families.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Maryilyn K. Lindsay; children, Lindsey Lyon and wife Phyllis of Conroe, Texas, Timothy Lyon and wife Lana of Liberal, Darlene Klug and husband David of Odin, Clayton Hulse and wife Sheryl of Fifi, Washington, Edward Hulse of Kansas City, Kansas, and Todd Hulse and wife Andrea of Olathe; 19 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren; nieces, Debbie Lindsay of Mesquite, Texas, and Pam Bonham of Larned; and his beloved cat, Pixie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Georgetta; daughter, Gaye Zerr, brothers, Chester, Richard, and Lester Lindsay; and a sister, Maxine Gage.

Friends may call 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 13, 2019, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with Rev. Dick Ogle presiding. Burial will follow in Hoisington Cemetery, with military honors conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Darrell Duncan

Woodward, Oklahoma – Darrell Duncan, 89, passed away at Grace Living in Woodward, Okla. He joined his beloved wife of 48 years, Mary Lou (Hamilton) Duncan in Heaven on February 8th, 2019.   Darrell was born August 17, 1929, and raised in Great Bend, KS, by his parents George and Irva (Robertson) Duncan.  Following his graduation from high school, Darrell worked at the flour mill in Great Bend.  When Mary Lou Hamilton saw Darrell with flour on his face, her mother said Mary was smitten for life.  Darrell and Mary Lou were married and then Darrell joined the Marine Core.  Darrell and Mary Lou served the Lord faithfully their entire life.

After returning from the Marines, Darrell went to work for Texaco in Great Bend, retiring after 30 years.  In his spare time he enjoyed fishing and gardening. Family and friends enjoyed many fish fries with fried potatoes and fresh tomatoes from Darrell’s garden.

After the death of Mary Lou, Darrell moved to Arkansas where he and Mary Lou had planned to retire. While there he met and married Evelyn F (flewellen) Young.  After the passing of Evelyn, he moved to Woodward, OK to be closer to his brother, Gary and wife Genevieve.

Darrell is survived by his brother Gary and wife Genevieve and many beloved nieces and nephews. Proceeding him in death are his parents and brother David.

Visitation will be 9:00 am Wednesday February 13, 2019, at the First Assembly God of Church, with funeral service to follow at 10:00 am.

A memorial has been established with the First Assembly of God Church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Antonio Hernandez

GREAT BEND – Antonio Hernandez, 81, passed away Feb. 7, 2019, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, Wichita. He was born June 1, 1937 at Chihuahua, Mexico to Felipe & Guadalupe (Soto) Hernandez. He married Lazara Chacon November 20, 1960 at Granmorelos, Chihuahua, Mexico. She survives.

Coming from California in 1993, Antonio was a Great Bend resident. He was a welder at Guthrie Trailer Sales. He was a member of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church and said many Catholic prayers for the congregation.

Survivors include, his wife, Lazara Hernandez of the home; two sons, Jesus A. Hernandez and Fredrico Hernandez; three daughters, Leticia Olivas, Concepcion Romo and Patricia Vasquez; one brother, Raul Hernandez; two sisters, Luzelena Estrada and Ema Corona; and 15 grandchildren, Angel Hernandez, Jehovany Hernandez, Rocio Olivas, Ashley Carrasco, Alejandra Romo, Daniel Hernandez, Victor Olivas, Ricky Hernandez, Joseluiz Vasquez, Elias Vasquez, Vanesa Vasquez, Crystal Hernandez, Marcos Romo,  Jesse Hernandez and Miguel Vasquez.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday, Feb. 11, 2019 at Bryant Funeral Home, with Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2019, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, with Father Don Bedore presiding. Dolores M. Lapka

GREAT BEND – Dolores M. Lapka, 88, passed away on Jan. 26, 2019, at Stormont Vail Hospital, Topeka. She was born Jan. 6, 1931, in Great Bend, to Vincente and Alejandra Gutierrez.

Dolores graduated from high school in 1950. She loved to polka dance, sew, make crafts, collect butterflies, and play Mexican train dominoes. She was also an avid bowler. She was a cub den mother, member of the Sunflower Polka Club and president of her class reunions. She also was a huge KU fan and enjoyed watching tennis.

She was united in marriage to Joseph Lapka, Sr., with this marriage came four children; Joseph Lapka, Jr. of Dodge City, Patricia Logan of Topeka, Marcia Peterson of Las Vegas and Dina Heier and husband Dennis of Quinter; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one brother, Daniel Gutierrez and his wife Janet. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vincente and Alejandra Gutierrez; one daughter, Marcia Peterson; four sisters, Norma Mounkes, Lucille Zero, Alberta Delgado and Katie Vesta; and one brother, Ishmael Gutierrez.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 3:00 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019, at the Stone Ridge Country Club, Great Bend.

Bruce A. Sloan

GREAT BEND — Bruce A. Sloan, 69, passed away Feb. 1, 2019, at his home in Great Bend.  He was born March 17, 1949, at Baltimore, MD.  He was a 1967 graduate of Great Bend High School, then pursued higher education, earning an MBA degree.  Bruce served in the U.S. Air Force during Vietnam War, obtaining the rank of SSG.

A lifetime area resident of Great Bend, Bruce formerly lived in Topeka, Wichita, and Florida. He worked for Cessna Aircraft Credit Union, and later taught at Barton Community College.  Bruce was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was an avid Kansas University Jayhawk fan. He loved to play golf and bowl, having started many youth bowling leagues.  Survivors include, one son, Justin Sloan of Tampa, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents, Delbert and Betty (Nicolet) Sloan; and two sisters, Dell Hayden and Shirley (Sloan) Mueller.

A Graveside Inurnment Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wed., Jan. 13, 2019, with Rev. Morita Truman presiding, at the Great Bend Cemetery. Military Rites will be conducted by the McConnell Air Force Base.  Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Lawrence “Max” Schroeder, 76, went to be with his Saviour Feb. 3, 2019, passing away at Country Place Senior Living, Hoisington.  Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2019, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with The Reverend Don Fisher officiating.  A graveside inurnment will take place at a later date at Freedom Cemetery, Freedom.  Visitation will be held 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019, with the family receiving friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.
