Zelda F. (Maser) Brack

Zelda F. (Maser) Brack, 100, died February 4, 2019, at Rush County Memorial Hospital.  She was born January 17, 1919, in Bazine, Kansas, the daughter of P.C. and Alivina (Wilkens) Maser.  She was born the second of three girls born to the Masers.  Zelda’s two sisters were Viola Maser Owens and Elaine Maser Tammen. Her baby sister, Elaine, was born eight years later also on January 17th. Zelda often refers to Elaine as her twin sister.

Zelda began teaching right out of high school in 1937 with a certificate to teach. She taught for 5 years in rural schools, then in Copeland, KS (1942-46), Dodge City, KS (1946-49), and then Maracaibo, Venezuela (1949-53). She also taught in Topeka, KS from 1953-57. She attended college during summers for many years eventually getting her bachelors in education in 1955 from the University of Northern Colorado.

On September 7, 1957, she married Leland A. “Lee” Brack in Dighton, Kansas.  Lee and Zelda never had children, therefore, no grandchildren; but Zelda’s friends, nieces and nephews have both and they share them with her. Zelda is survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Lee on September 21, 1995. She was also preceded by her two sisters, Viola and Elaine; and a brother-in-law, Oliver Brack; and sister-in-law, Alberta Schneider.

Friends may call 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the funeral home. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 9, 2019, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Otis, with Rev. Shelly Klingensmith presiding.  Burial will follow in Otis Lutheran Cemetery.

Nixa, Missouri

Nixa, Missouri — Mona Maxine Oller, 89, passed away February 2, 2019, at Nixa Care Home in Nixa, Missouri. She was born October 24, 1929, in Freedom, Oklahoma the daughter of Bernie and Mary (Dillard) Puckett. Maxine was united in marriage to Robert Oller May 15, 1950, in Great Bend. He passed away June 27, 1975.

Maxine was a resident of Great Bend until 2012, when she moved to Missouri. She enjoyed sewing and spending time doing yard work.

Survivors include one daughter Deborah Rumage of Springfield, Missouri; three grandchildren, Amy Pentecost, Bobby Oller and Susan Leech; two great grandchildren, Jeffery Peterson and Mishika Pentecost. She was preceded in death by a son, George Oller; and several brothers and sisters.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Lawrence “Max” Schroeder

Dateline: Hoisington, Kansas

Lawrence “Max” Schroeder, 76, went to be with his Saviour Feb. 3, 2019, passing away at Country Place Senior Living, Hoisington.  He was born June 5, 1942, at Freedom, Okla., to Jimmie and Mabel (Shurts) Schroeder.  Max married Wanda Lee Doctor July 28, 1962, at Freedom, Okla.  She survives.

Max was a 1960 graduate of Freedom High School, Freedom, then furthered his education at Oklahoma State University, earning his B.S. and M.S. degrees.  A life dedicated to education, Max taught at Frankfurt, Kan., for two years before moving to Hoisington in 1966, where he taught for 30 years, and at Barton Community College for one year.  He had also worked as a federal crop adjustor for Farm Bureau.  Max was a member of the Christian faith, Masonic Lodge #331, Hoisington, life member of Kansas Trap Shooters Association, National Rifle Association and was an electrician license holder since 1973.  He enjoyed raising and training horses.

Survivors include his wife of the home, Wanda; two daughters, Brenda Lea Krumm of Chanute and Debbie Vaughn Larkin of Hoisington; three grandchildren, Shelby L. Taylor and husband Zach, Nathan G. Larkin and Alex C. Krumm; one brother; Jimmie Ray Schroeder of Carrollton, Tex.; two sisters, Patsy Joyce Pollino of Alva, Okla. and Bonita Morrill of Los Gatos, Cal.; and a host of relatives and friends.  Max was preceded in passing by a son-in-law, Rob Krumm.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2019, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with The Reverend Don Fisher officiating.  A graveside inurnment will take place at a later date at Freedom Cemetery, Freedom.  Visitation will be held 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019, with the family receiving friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. Ruth Anne “Susie” Krug

Ruth Anne “Susie” Krug, 93, La Crosse, Kansas, died Friday, February 1, 2019, at her home.

Mrs. Krug was born September 19, 1925, in rural Bison, Kansas, the daughter of Everett O. Edwards, Sr., and Frances (Bitter) Edwards. She was a lifelong resident of Rush County. A 1944 graduate of Bison High School, Bison, Kansas, she was the Rush County Treasurer for many years before her retirement.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, both of La Crosse, Kansas.

On September 11, 1949, she married Melvin “Pete” Krug at the United Methodist Church, Bison, Kansas. He preceded her in death April 3, 2009.

Survivors include: her son, Mark Krug, La Crosse, Kansas; her daughter, Michelle Keogh (Jerry), Wichita, Kansas; one granddaughter, Wendy Bublitz (Erich), Lawrence, Kansas; two great granddaughters, Mikala Bublitz, and Sofie Bublitz; and one sister, Holly Brack, Spearman, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; six brothers, Robert Edwards, Everett “Peck” Edwards, Jr., Thomas Edwards, Forrest Edwards, Zane Edwards, and Elbert “Bert” Edwards; and five sisters, Ladine Peterson, Lois Edwards, Elma Edwards, Hazel Stump, and Minetta Smith.

Visitation will be Friday, February 8, 2019, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.

Funeral service will be Saturday, February 9, 2019, at 1:30 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with Pastor Norma McNair officiating. Interment will be in the La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse, Kansas.

Donna Jean Clark

Donna Jean Clark, 82, passed away Feb. 1, 2019, at Country Place Senior Living, Hoisington.  She was born Sept. 4, 1936, at Great Bend, to Roy and Lillie (Mische) LeRoy.  Donna married Allan B. Clark Dec. 19, 1954, at Great Bend, KS.  He passed away Aug. 1, 1999.

Donna, a life time resident of Great Bend, was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend, and a former member of E.H.U.  She had played an active role in taking care of Allan’s “Hobby Farm” and had served her community as a long time 4H leader.  She took a special interest in University of Kansas basketball, 4H cooking project leadership, and teaching all of her grandkids how to cook and bake.

Survivors include one son, Todd Clark and wife LaDesha of Great Bend; three daughters, Gina Owen and Alex Thies of Great Bend, DeAndra Clark of Great Bend, and Janay Clark and husband Andrew of Great Bend; seven grandchildren, Callie Schneider and husband Matt, Caitlin Owen and Jacob Regier, Cody Clark, Shailey Clark, Tucker Mayhugh, Gunner Mayhugh and Slade Mayhugh; two great grandchildren, Bentley Regier and Krew Mayhugh; one brother, Glenn LeRoy and wife Lorna of Midland, Tex.; two sisters, Shirley Stephenson (and the Skinner clan) of Midland, Tex., and Marilyn Cooper and husband Gary of The Villages, Fla.; two sons-in law, Mark Mayhugh and Byron Owen, both of Great Bend.  She was preceded in passing by her parents; husband, Allan B.; sister, Elverta Yahne Lawrence; and brother-in-law, Doug Stephenson.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend, with The Reverend Jon Brudvig officiating.  Interment will follow at the Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend.  Visitation will be from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Bryant Funeral Home.  Memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Golden Belt Humane Society, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Bruce A. Sloan

Dateline: Great Bend, Kansas

GREAT BEND — Bruce A. Sloan, 69, passed away Feb. 1, 2019, at his home in Great Bend.  He was born March 17, 1949, at Baltimore, MD.  He was a 1967 graduate of Great Bend High School, then pursued higher education, earning an MBA degree.  Bruce served in the U.S. Air Force during Vietnam War, obtaining the rank of SSG.

A lifetime area resident of Great Bend, Bruce formerly lived in Topeka, Wichita, and Florida. He worked for Cessna Aircraft Credit Union, and later taught at Barton Community College.  Bruce was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was an avid Kansas University Jayhawk fan. He loved to play golf and bowl, having started many youth bowling leagues.  Survivors include, one son, Justin Sloan of Tampa, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents, Delbert and Betty (Nicolet) Sloan; and two sisters, Dell Hayden and Shirley (Sloan) Mueller.

Cremation has taken place and graveside services will be announced at a later date.  Respects may be given and register book signed from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday, Feb. 4, and Tuesday, February 5, at Bryant Funeral Home.  Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Donna Kay Reed

St John – Donna Kay Reed, 81, passed away Jan. 31, 2019 at Kenwood Plaza, St. John. She was born Jan. 15, 1938 at McPherson to Ernest Edward & Romeyn Thyra (Lundquist) Brocher.

A longtime resident of Northwest Arkansas, she returned to the Great Bend area in 2003. She graduated from Great Bend High School with the Class of 1956. She loved horses and dogs and enjoyed all kinds of crafts and painting.

Survivors include, two sons, Russell Reed and his wife Suzanne and James E. (Ed) Reed and his wife Angela, both of Winslow, Arkansas; one brother, Richard (Bud) Brocher and his wife Marla of Great Bend; two sisters, Mary Smith of Great Bend and Jan Reames and her husband Richard of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one brother-in-law, Dean O’Brien; three grandchildren, Jessica Reed, Rachel Strickland and Claudia Costa; and three nieces and 6 nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Romeyn Brocher; a brother, Howard Brocher; and two sisters, Diana (Brocher) O’Brien and Patricia Brocher.

There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place and a Private Family Service will be held at a later date.

Lucille Davis

GREAT BEND – Lucille Davis, 89, passed away January 31, 2019 at Medicalodges of Great Bend. She was born April 24, 1929 at Hays, to Anton Fredrick & Mary (Pfeifer) Meis. She married Richard Lewis Davis on December 31, 1947 at Garden City.  He died October 6, 2007.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Lucille was a homemaker. She loved gardening, cooking, sewing and reading. She was an excellent wife, mother, grandmother and gave the best hugs.

Survivors include, one son, Richard Davis, Jr. and wife Mary of Great Bend; three daughters, Patricia Skelton of Great Bend, Deborah Durler and partner Jim VanDyke of Branson, Missouri and Cynthia Carter of Great Bend; nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Anton and Mary Meis; her husband, Richard Davis; three brothers, Fred Meis, Gilbert Meis, Albert Meis; and three sisters, Agnes Meis, Mary Staab, Ida Kuhn.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Sun. Feb. 3, 2019 at Bryant Funeral Home, with family present from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Mon., Feb. 4, 2019 at Bryant Funeral Home, with Pastor Larry Schumacher presiding. DeWayne J. Mick

St. John – DeWayne J. Mick, 70, passed away Jan. 31, 2019 at Stafford County Hospital, Stafford. He was born Sept. 29, 1948 at Winfield to Joseph and Irene (Denning) Mick. He married Jolene Stimatze Dec. 22, 1969 at Lyons. She survives.

DeWayne grew up in Ellinwood and moved to St. John from Byers in 1976. He was owner and operator of DeWayne’s Tank Service, Inc. DeWayne was of the Catholic faith and a member of the MACK Flying Club. He loved going fishing.

Survivors include, one son, DeWayne “Jay” Mick of Willard, Missouri; three brothers, Gary L. Mick and William H. Baker, Jr., both of Great Bend and Gregory R. Baker of Ellinwood; one grandson, Jay Allen Mick; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Mick and Irene Baker; and a sister, Verna (Baker) Collins.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019 at Bryant Funeral Home, with family present from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, Feb. 4, 2019 at Bryant Funeral Home, with Father Ted Stoecklein presiding. Chuck Carper

GREAT BEND – Chuck Carper, 69, passed away Jan. 29, 2019 at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City. He was born June 21, 1949 at Palo Alto, Cal. to James Victor & Mildred (Beach) Carper. He married Geraldine Ruble Feb. 3, 1973 at Great Bend.  She survives.

Having previously resided in LaCrosse, Dodge City and Garden City, Chuck has been a Great Bend resident since 2007. He was employed for many years in truck sales and service, having recently worked for Doonan Peterbilt of Great Bend. Chuck was an avid golfer and sports fan, played slow pitch softball and enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling. He loved his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandkids.

Survivors include, his wife, Geraldine “Gerri” Carper of the home; one son, Brett Carper and his wife Kari of Great Bend; one daughter, Jennifer Fischer and her husband Tom of Hudson; two sisters, Vicki Kerns and her husband Steve of Maize and Tammi Jo Sramek and her husband Joe of LaCrosse; three grandchildren, Braylee Carper, Brecklynn Carper and Braxton Fischer. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mildred Carper; and infant twin grandsons, Austin and Wyatt Fischer.

There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday, Feb. 4, 2019 at Bryant Funeral Home, with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019 at Grace Community Church in Great Bend, with Pastor Jay Beuoy and Pastor Don Paden presiding. Inurnment will be in the La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse. Memorials are suggested to the FHSU Foundation to benefit the Kansas Wetlands Education Center, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
