Edith Bollig

GREAT BEND – Edith Bollig, 90, passed away January 17, 2019 at Locust Grove Village Nursing Home, LaCrosse. She was born March 5, 1928 at LaCrosse to Nicholas and Veronica (Legleiter) Herrman. She married Richard Bollig November 14, 1949 at LaCrosse. He died February 16, 2018.

Coming from LaCrosse, Edith was the Vice President at Security State Bank for 38 years before retiring. She was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish, Ladies Auxillary, Daughters of Isabella, American Legion Argonne Post 180 and VFW Auxillary Post 3111, all of Great Bend.

Survivors include, one daughter, Sylvia Billinger and husband Charles Pete of Great Bend; one son, Dale Bollig and wife Connie of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Marvin Herrman and Albert Herrman; and one sister, Eleanor Moeder. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nicholas and Veronica Herrman; her husband, Richard Bollig; one son, Gery Dean Bollig; six brothers, Chris Herrman, Elmer Herrman, Alvin Herrman, Alexander Herrman, Raymond Herrman and Kenny Herrman; and four sisters, Emma Moeder, Bertha Sauber, Agnes Herrman and Sister Louise Herrman.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Sunday, January 20, 2019 at Bryant Funeral Home, with Altar Society Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and Daughters of Isabella Rosary and Vigil at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend, with Father Ted Stoecklein presiding. Charles Isaac Andress

GREAT BEND – Charles Isaac Andress, 87, passed away January 17, 2019 at Medicalodges of Great Bend due to kidney failure. He was born on November 20, 1931 in Great Bend, Kansas. He was the son of Charles and Virginia (Pritchard) Andress. He married Mary R. Treux on July 26, 1959 in Great Bend. She died June 5, 2006.

He graduated from Great Bend High School in 1949 and Kansas State University in 1954. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, having served in Alaska. He was a retired loan officer of the Greensburg Production Credit Association, having lived in Greensburg for 42 years before returning to Great Bend in 2007. He belonged to the Order of Eastern Star in Greensburg and Masonic bodies in Great Bend and was active in civic organizations and circus related groups. He was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Great Bend.

Survivors include, a son, John Andress and wife Rita of Great Bend. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Virginia Andress, and his wife, Mary Andress.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Monday, January 21, 2019 at Bryant Funeral Home, with family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at Great Bend Cemetery. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at First Congregational United Church of Christ. Donald E. Nily

Donald E. Nily, age 89 years, longtime Great Bend, Kansas resident, passed away on Wednesday morning, January 16, 2019 at Medicalodges of Great Bend in Great Bend, Kansas. Don was born on December 18, 1929 in Mitchell County, Kansas to Charles and Ida Bertha (Seehafer) Nily. After graduating from high school, Don attended Barber College in Tulsa, Oklahoma and moved to Great Bend, Kansas in 1950, where he barbered in the Uptown Barber Shop, the Nuss Barber Shop, and the Victory Barber Shop for a total of 55 years between the three shops prior to his retirement in 2005. He was united in marriage to Janet K. Logan on March 8, 1987 at Great Bend. Don was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Great Bend, Kansas. In his younger years, Don competed in archery, where he was very accomplished. He also enjoyed gardening, taking the neighborhood kids to the farm for campouts, watching his grandkids’ sporting events, dancing, and a good cigar.
Survivors include his wife, Janet Nily of Great Bend, Kansas; four sons: David (and his wife, Tiffany) Nily of Great Bend, Kansas, John “J.C.” Nily of Dallas, Texas, Brent (and his wife, Tammy) Buehler of Great Bend, Kansas and Tron Buehler of Great Bend, Kansas; three daughters: Cindy (and her husband, Alan) Stein of Great Bend, Kansas, Dawn (and her husband, Dave) Eppeland of Krum, Texas and Julie (and her husband, Brian) Mitchell of Great Bend, Kansas; thirteen grandchildren: Lindsey Ferguson, Scott (and his wife, Tara) Stein, Ashley (and her husband, John) Ketch, Dillon Mitchell, Logan Buehler, Brady Buehler, Thomas Eppeland, Michael Eppeland, Stevee Nily, Dodge Nily, Mariah Stein, Delaney Buehler, and Blayne Buehler; five great-granchildren: Dylan Ferguson, Sierra Ferguson, Jordyn Rains, Kylee Rains, and Ashlynn Ketch; one brother, Dick Nily of Lincoln, Kansas; nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Viola “Vi” (Ploutz) Nily in 1982; one brother, Chester Nily; and two sisters, Edna Vehige and Imogene Brady.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, January 21, 2019 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend, Kansas with Rev. Barbara Jones officiating. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery at Great Bend, Kansas. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Sunday, January 20, 2019 at Charter Funerals in Great Bend. Aaron Montes

Aaron Montes, age 38 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, January 15, 2019 at the University of Kansas Health Systems Great Bend Campus after a sudden illness. Aaron was born on May 6, 1980 at Chihuahua, Mexico to Juan and Gregoria (Morales) Montes. He moved to Great Bend, Kansas in 1997 and was united in marriage to Martha Gonzales on January 27, 2001 in Great Bend, Kansas. Aaron has worked as a crane operator for Bridges, Incorporated of Newton, Kansas for nearly 20 years. Aaron was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Prince Of Peace Parish of Great Bend. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, fishing, working on cars, and was a good cook and an excellent husband and father.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Montes Gonzales of Great Bend, Kansas; one son, Aaron Montes of the home and two daughters, Marisa and Adamaris Montes, both of the home; two brothers: Abraham (and his wife, Jasmine) Montes of Emporia, Kansas and Leonel (and his wife, Veronica) Montes of Chihuahua, Mexico; one sister, Elodia (and her husband, Hilario) Montes of Chihuahua, Mexico; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Baciliza Montes.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, January 18, 2019 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend, Kansas with Fr. Don Bedore officiating. Interment will be in Great Bend Cemetery North at Great Bend, Kansas. Kevin F. Roberts

GREAT BEND – Kevin F. Roberts, 79, passed away January 8, 2019 at Medicalodges of Great Bend. He was born May 28, 1939 at Topeka to Frank & Elizabeth (Smith) Roberts. He married Hilda Means, January 28, 1967 at Iola. She survives.

Coming from Pittsburgh in 1969, Kevin was a math teacher for Harrison Middle School and Great Bend High School until he retired in 2001. He graduated from Leavenworth High School and Pittsburgh State University. He coached wrestling for Harrison Junior High and was a member of the gun club. He loved to hunt, fish and had a great sense of humor.

Survivors include, his wife, Hilda of the home; a daughter, Carrie Rivera and her husband David of Chicago, Illinois; a brother Giles Roberts of Tallahassee, Florida; and two grandchildren, Ethan Rivera and Megan Rivera. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Elizabeth Roberts.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, January 10, 2019 at Bryant Funeral Home, with Vigil at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 11, 2019 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Louis Hoang presiding. Mary Ellen Stueder

GREAT BEND- Mary Ellen Stueder, 86, passed away Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at Almost Home, Great Bend. She was born May 15, 1932 in Herington, Kansas. She was the daughter of John T. Johnson and Ruth (Milleson) Johnson. She was an area resident, having lived in Bushton, Claflin and Great Bend. She graduated from Bushton High School in 1950.

She married Elmer Stueder October 15, 1950 at Bushton Methodist Church. He died January 24, 2018, after 67 blessed years of marriage. She was a farm wife, mother and homemaker. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, holding various offices and jobs over the years including, financial secretary, Sunday school teacher, Ladies Aid and serving funeral dinners. She enjoyed playing bridge, traveling in the U.S. and foreign countries, attending her grandchildren’s athletic sporting events and programs and family get togethers.

Survivors include, three sons, Bill Stueder and wife Patty, Alan Stueder and wife Rita, all of Claflin, and Terry Stueder and wife Mel Eesa of Great Bend; eleven grandchildren, Danny Stueder, Kimberly Prosser and husband Mark, Michael Stueder and wife Samantha, Evann Newton and husband Rusty, Brenna Marshall and husband Logan, Tarynn Stueder and fiancé Benn Kirmer, Trent Stueder, Sarah Stueder, Cindy Stueder, Tim Stueder and wife Kaitlee, and Abby Stueder; and five great-grandchildren, Wesley Prosser, Emma Stueder, Noah Stueder, Mercadez Newton and Shatarah Newton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Stueder; her parents, John and Ruth Johnson; a son, David Stueder; a granddaughter, Rachael Stueder; a brother, John Johnson; and a sister, Susan Foster.

Helen M. Kaiser

Dateline – Hoisington 

Helen M. Kaiser, 88, died January 7, 2019, at Diversicare of Hutchinson.  She was born December 19, 1930, in Odin, Kansas, the daughter of Alois F. and Regina (Hermann) Prosser.

On October 10, 1950, she married Frank S. Kaiser in Odin, Kansas.  He preceded her in death on December 30, 2001.

A longtime resident of Hoisington, Frank and Helen were former managers of the Dairy Queen.

Helen was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. She was active in many aspects of church, including the Altar Society, Parish Bible Study, as a Eucharistic Minister, in RCIA, Renew Program, and the Parish Council. She was also a Dominican Associate, a former member of Daughters of Isabella of Claflin, a member of the American Eagle Club and the V.F.W. Auxiliary.

She is survived by children, Cletus J. Kaiser of Rogersville, Missouri; Timothy D. Kaiser and wife Janet of Wichita, and Gina A. Streetman of Arkansas; seven grandchildren, Natalie Warrick, Alan, Bradley, and Kimberly Streetman, and Matthew, Chelsea, and Lisa Kaiser.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; seven brothers, Tony, John, Bill, Joe, Julius, Leonard, and Louie Prosser; and seven sisters, Anna Steiner, Tillie Kramer, Jean Rome, Eleanor Kingston, Cecilia Tipperman, Catherine Schremmer and Mary Birzer.

Friends may call 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with family to receive friends from 6 to 7p.m.

Vigil with Altar Society Rosary will start at 7 p.m., all at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Thursday, January 10, 2019, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, celebrated by Father Charles Mazouch. Burial will follow in St. John Catholic Cemetery.

A. Neal Reichel

GREAT BEND – A. Neal Reichel, 83, passed away January 7, 2019 at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. He was born August 26, 1935 at LaCrosse to Henry and Esther (Foos) Reichel. He married Opal Mellies November 17, 1954 at Bushton.  She died May 6, 2016.

Neal, a long time farmer, lived on a farm northeast of Bison his entire life, before retiring and moving to Great Bend in 2001. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a former EMT for Rush County, active for years with the Bison volunteer fire department, and a member of the ISIS Shrine. Neal enjoyed and felt blessed to take his grandkids fishing, boating and camping.

Survivors include, two sons, Joel Reichel and his wife Terry of Alexander and Jody Reichel and his husband Seth Munter of San Francisco, California; two daughters, Charlotte Brening and her husband Phil of Fort Worth, Texas and Cherie Belford and her husband Larry of Hoisington; eleven grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Barbara Baus of McCracken. He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Reichel and a brother, Carroll Reichel.

Visitation will be held from Noon to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 10, 2019 at First United Methodist Church in Great Bend, with Rev. Morita Truman presiding. Frances Ann Prosser

ODIN, KANSAS – Frances Ann Prosser, 89, passed away January 7, 2019, at Brookdale Assisted Living, Great Bend. She was born on May 13, 1929 at Odin to John B. and Regina (Schmidt) Werner. She married Norbert J. “Bones” Prosser, September 8, 1955 at Odin. He died January 18, 2016.

A long time Odin resident, Frances was a homemaker, farmer and rancher. She was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and Altar Society. Being a dedicated member of Holy Family Catholic Church, she devoted many hours to various activities, such as decorating the Church. She loved gardening, baking, hunting, camping and especially cherished time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include, two sons, Abe Prosser and wife Nona of Odin, KS, and Zack Prosser and wife Melissa of Beaver, KS; two daughters, Vicki Kaiser and husband Bob of Odin, KS, and Missi Prosser of Odin, KS; one brother, Tony Werner; two sisters, Loretta Rutherford and Irene Werner; eight grandchildren, Johnathon Kaiser, Emilee DeMartino and husband Victor, Joshua Kaiser, April Kaiser, Amanda Finn and husband Sean, Cameren Prosser, Isaac Prosser, and Zane Prosser; and four great-grandchildren, Victor DeMartino, Samuel DeMartino, Abigail Finn and Samantha Finn. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Norbert J. “Bones” Prosser; four brothers, John Werner, Robert Werner, Rudy Werner, and infant Raymond Werner; and four sisters, Theresa Miller, Annie Klug, Mary Gilliam and Margie Carey.

LaVerne Eugene Nettleingham

Dateline – Galatia 

LaVerne Eugene Nettleingham, 95, died December 31, 2018, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington.  He was born February 12, 1923, in Hoisington, Kansas, the son of Guy LaVerne and Amelia Lucille (Nuss) Nettleingham.

On May 17, 1948, he married Gladys Ehrlich at the Emmaus Lutheran Church in Hoisington.

A lifetime resident of rural Galatia, LaVerne was a farmer and a cattleman.

LaVerne had a strong faith and was a longtime member of Concordia Lutheran Church, Hoisington.  LaVerne loved to farm, especially driving the tractor, and did so up until his 90th birthday.  He was also a big fan of pro wrestling cheering on his favorite wrestlers. Most of all he loved his family and spending time with his grandkids and great grandkids.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Gladys Nettleingham of the home; children, Kent Nettleingham and Kevin Nettleingham both of Galatia, and Colette Keeler and husband Ray of Great Bend; son-in-law, Steve Bilyew of Claflin; eight grandchildren, three step grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, six step great grandchildren, and one step great great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Coleen Bilyew, daughter-in-law, Suzy Nettleingham, brother, Albert Nettleingham, and a sister, Marlene Morrison.

Friends may call 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 4, 2018, at Concordia Lutheran Church, Hoisington, with Reverend Gary Wolf presiding. Burial will follow in Hoisington City Cemetery.
