Randy R. Schriner

ALBERT — Randy R. Schriner, 69, passed away December 30, 2018, at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned.  He was born November 19, 1949, at Great Bend to Elmer John and Marjorie Lee (Dirks) Schriner.

Randy, a long time Albert area farmer, served his country during the Vietnam War, in the U.S. Army, from 1969-1972, earning the rank of SP5.

Survivors include one brother, Kent Schriner and wife Ellen of Albert; nephews, Jesse Schriner and wife Sabra and Joey Schriner and wife Roxanna; four great nieces and nephews, Alexa, Rienna, Ethan and Zachary; and longtime companion, Lucille “Lucy” Besperat of Bison.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services have been scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 3, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend, with Rev. Arlyn Thielenhaus presiding.  Interment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend, with Military Committal Rites conducted by the Ft. Riley Honor Guard.  Visitation will be from Noon to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 2, 2019, with the family receiving friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home.  Memorials may be directed to the Albert Fire Department, in care of Bryant Funeral Home

John B. Riedel

John B. Riedel, 80, died December 30, 2018, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. He was born July 8, 1938, on the family farm near Olmitz, Kansas, the son of Bernard J. and Anna V. (Budig) Riedel.  John was a graduate of Otis High School and served in the Army Reserves.

A lifetime resident of Olmitz, John drove the milk truck for the cheese plant and then as a pumper in the oilfield for many years. Later he worked as an irrigation specialist for A.V.I. John Deere in Larned; and Bird Oil. He retired from Superior Essex as a machine operator at the age of 70.

He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, in Olmitz.  He had also served on the Olmitz city council and the volunteer fire department.  John loved to tinker and could most often be found in his garage working on a project. He also loved to garden and smoke meats in his smokehouse, and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

On October 20, 1958, he married Imelda A. “Meldie” Lichter at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Olmitz. She preceded him in death on January 1, 2018.

He is survived by six children; Brenda Riedel of Olmitz, Tom Riedel of McPherson, Sandy Urban and husband Charlie of Olmitz, Richard Riedel and wife Shelley of Hoisington, Linda Pechanec and husband Tom of Timken, and Sheila Schilowsky of Great Bend; sister, Janet Savage of Gilman City, MO; 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter, Tammy Jo Riedel, brother, Melvin Riedel, and a sister, Ann Mantz.

Friends may call 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Casket will be closed, per his wishes.

Vigil and Rosary will be 7 p.m. Thursday, with family to greet friends prior to, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the church. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 4, 2018, all at St. Ann Catholic Church, Olmitz, celebrated by Father Don Bedore. Burial will follow in St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery, Olmitz.

Tammy Jo Hayes

GREAT BEND – Tammy Jo Hayes, 59, passed away December 26, 2018, at her home in Great Bend. She was born August 24, 1959, at Spearman, Texas, to Ambrose and Victoria (Brack) Kramer.

Tammy grew up in Great Bend, moved to Larned where she lived for 17 years and then 4 years ago, she moved back to Great Bend. She worked for the Larned State Hospital as a mental health tech. Tammy loved to crochet, garden and collect cookie jars.

Survivors include, three sons, Heath Kramer of Benton, Louisiana, Jamie Sparks and wife Ashley of Wichita, and Terry Sparks and wife Kimberly of Otis; two daughters, Bobbie Driscoll of Salina and Tracy Vsetecka and husband Jason of Great Bend; three brothers, Robert Patrick of Topeka, Ross Kramer and wife Jennifer of Kansas City, Kansas, and Michael Bradley Kramer and wife Angie of Larned; five sisters, Rose Lind of WaKeeney, Becky Kramer Lloyd of Larned, Cindy Schetrom of Great Bend, Patricia Garner of Kansas City, Missouri, and Sandra Thompson of Russell; and 20 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ambrose and Victoria Brack; her step-mother, Anna May Kramer; one brother, David Walker; and one sister, Fatima Simpson.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Friday, December 28, 2018 at Bryant Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 29, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Pastor Curt Reinhardt presiding. Billie J. Slemp

Billie J. Slemp, 85, La Crosse, Kansas, died Tuesday, December 25, 2018, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed, La Crosse, Kansas.

Mrs. Slemp was born April 3, 1933, in Olinger, Virginia, the daughter of Harme and Sarah (McClancy) Greene.  She was a resident of Rush County, Kansas, since 1984, moving there from Florida.  She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church.

On September 22, 1949, she married James B. Slemp at Pennington Gap, Virginia.

Survivors include:  her husband, James Slemp, La Crosse, Kansas; one son, Joseph Slemp (Linda), La Crosse, Kansas;  one daughter, Nancy Bollermann, Perry, Florida; three grandchildren, Jeremy Slemp (Ashley), Bison, Kansas, Lacy Quake (Andrew), Three Rivers, Michigan, and Ron Reed (April), La Crosse, Kansas; and six great grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son in law, Paul Bollermann; and numerous brothers and sisters.

Visitation will be Sunday, December 30, 2018, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas.

Funeral service will be Monday, December 31, 2018, at 11:00 A.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with Pastor Tom Ferch officiating.  Interment will be in the La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse, Kansas.

Kenneth Herbert Bieker

Dateline – Hoisington 

Kenneth Herbert Bieker, 81, of Hoisington, Kansas, former Wallace, KS resident, passed away at his home Wednesday, December 26, 2018.

He was born October 26, 1937, in Hays, KS to Herbert Leo and Amelia Josephine (Staab) Bieker. He was the second born child out of six and the only son.  He attended school thru 1st grade at Coddell KS, where he had to walk to school uphill, in the cold, both ways. Then he moved to grade school in Wallace, KS until the 6th grade, then attended school in Sharon Springs until he graduated in 1955. When he was young, he was a member of 4H, raising beef calves. He enjoyed playing football and running track in school.

After graduation, he enlisted in the Navy and traveled the world, earning a rank of Petty Officer First Class E6 (Engineman). He was aboard the USS Comstock and sailed to places such as Hawaii, Japan, Hong Kong, China, and the Philippines, and earned his certificate for crossing the equator. While in the service, Ken attended Nashville Auto-Diesel College in Tennessee for Diesel Mechanics. After his honorable discharge in October 1961, he returned home and worked for his dad on the farm near Wallace, KS.

He married Linda Louise Connolly on March 3, 1963. They moved to a dairy farm near Houston, Missouri and milked cows. In 1964, they moved back to Sharon Springs, KS and Ken worked for Witzel & Rhea, working on tractors. In 1972, the family moved to the farm near Wallace where they lived and worked. Ken and Linda were blessed with eight wonderful children during their 55 years of marriage: Peggy Lynn, Barbara Sue, Larry Leon, Lori Ann, Angela Louise, Monte Lee, Melissa Kaye, and Martin William. They retired in 2003 and moved to Hoisington, KS, where they resided at the time of his death.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Peggy, and his sisters Yvonne Hileman and Joyce Engel.

He is survived by his wife Linda of Hoisington; children Bobbi Griffin of Wakeeny, KS,  Larry (Susan) of Larned, KS, Lori Ann Ross of Okay, OK, Angie Meye of Bastrop, TX, Monte of Salina, KS, Melissa White of Curtis, NE, and Marty (Nicole) of Great Bend, KS; sisters Wanda Kupfner of Knoxville, TN, Cheri (Bob) Thummel and Cindy (Bill) Foley, both of Salina, KS; 24 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his family and all who knew him.

Friends may call 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with Vigil and Rosary at 7 p.m. Friday, all at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 29, 2018, celebrated by Father Don Bedore.  Burial will follow in Hoisington City Cemetery with military honors conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard.

Herbert A. Hoff

Dateline – Claflin 

Herbert A. Hoff, died December 24, 2018, at Clara Barton Hospital. He was born January 16, 1937, in Hays, Kansas, the son of Herbert W. and Rose Marie (Leiker) Hoff. Herbert graduated from Claflin High School in 1956.

A resident of Claflin since 1953, he was a bulk tank agent for Standard Oil for over 40 years. He was also a bus driver for USD 112 for 15 years.

Herbert was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He was active in his community, serving on the city council, as a volunteer fire fighter, and an auxiliary deputy. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

On August 17, 1967, he married Rhoda Marie Selness in Claflin, Kansas. After two short years of marriage she died on August 3, 1969. He then married Mary Richardson, with which he adopted a daughter Kim. He and Mary later divorced. Then on June 28, 1975, he married Jane C. Weber in Coldwater, Kansas. They were married for 42 years when she died on November 12, 2017.

Survivors include: daughter, Kim Traum and husband Harry of Arvada, Colorado; brother, Steve Hoff and wife Carol of Laramie, Wyoming; sisters, Annette Bourne and husband Gene of Ellsworth, and Dolores Hoff of Iola; four grandchildren, Joshlyn, Alexis, Mattea, and Danielle Traum.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wives, Rhoda and Jane, and an infant daughter, Alexandra Marie Hoff.

Friends may call 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Vigil and Rosary will begin at 7 p.m. all at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.

Carolyn R. Martin

HOISINGTON — Carolyn R. Martin, 73, passed away Saturday December 22, 2018, at her home in Hoisington. She was born April 22, 1945 in Tribune, the daughter of Raymond and Goldie (Jones) Kuder. She married Dwight Martin February 8, 1964, and they later divorced.

A lifetime resident of Hoisington, Carolyn was a jacket operator for Superior Essex for many years. Carolyn was a member of the First Christian Church, Hoisington, and the Order of the Eastern Star. Carolyn was an avid bingo player and loved playing bingo with her friends. She loved spending time with her family and many friends.

Survivors include two daughters, Shelley Keeling and husband Ken of Attica and Jodi Hill and husband Rob of Olathe; one son, Darin Martin and wife Sarah of Claflin; two sisters, Irene Rice of El Paso, Texas, and Mary Krebs of Syracuse; six grandchildren, Justin Hamit, Kailee McClellan, Randall Martin, Hope Martin, Aislee Martin and Clade Martin; and two great grandchildren, Hunter Hamit and Taylynn Lloyd. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Quinlee Martin and sister, Kathryn Rothers.

Memorial services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday December 26, 2018, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Reazin officiating. Inurnment will follow at Hoisington Cemetery.  No visitation will be held as cremation has taken place.

Wanda L. Jacobs

Wanda L. Jacobs, 82, La Crosse, Kansas, died Friday, December 21, 2018, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas.

Mrs. Jacobs was born February 27, 1936, in Otis, Kansas, the daughter of Dan Ochs, Sr. and Violet (Shetler) Ochs.  She was a 30 year resident of La Crosse, Kansas, moving there from Great Bend, Kansas.  She was a cook at the Rush County Nursing Home, La Crosse, Kansas, before her retirement.

She was a member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church, Great Bend, Kansas.

On November 24, 1954, she married Melvin A. “Sonny” Jacobs at Great Bend, Kansas.  He preceded her in death July 14, 2004.

Survivors include:  four sons, Melvin G. Jacobs, Great Bend, Kansas, Theodore “Teddy” J. Jacobs, Goodland, Kansas, Paul A. Jacobs (Lori), Great Bend, Kansas, and Patrick L. Don R. Belt

Great Bend — Don R. Belt, 68, passed away December 22, 2018, at Hays Medical Center.  He was born June 16, 1950, at El Dorado, to A. D. and Fayrene (Usrey) Belt.  He married Connie Suchy June 26, 1976, at Great Bend.  She survives.

Don, a resident of Great Bend since 1965, coming from Louisiana and El Dorado, was a truck driver for Linde Global Helium, retiring in 2012.  Don was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, and enjoyed restoring old cars along with his son, Justin.

Survivors include wife, Connie Belt, of the home; one son, Justin Belt of Great Bend; one daughter, Caitlin Belt and fiancé Brandon Radenberg of Claflin; one sister, Connie Dickinson and husband George of Marquette; one brother, Ron Belt and wife Debbie of Maize; one grandchild, Autumn Harman Belt of Great Bend; brother-in-law, Roger Suchy of Great Bend; sister-in-law, Linda Suchy Ramey of Midlothian, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Bobby Belt.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 27, 2018, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend, with the Rev. Jon Brudvig presiding.  Interment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery North, Great Bend.  Visitation will be Noon to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 26, 2018, and 9:00 a.m. until Noon Thursday, December 27, all at Bryant Funeral Home.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday.  Memorial funds have been established with the American Heart Association or Donor’s Choice, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
