Viola M. Meyeres

Dateline – Odin 

Viola M. Meyeres, 93, died October 11, 2018, at Ellinwood District Hospital.  She was born June 29, 1925, in Odin, the daughter of Hugo and Mathilda (Hoeffner) Frenzl.

A longtime resident of Odin she was a homemaker. Viola was well known for her beautiful flower gardens. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Altar Society.

On June 10, 1952, she married Stephen J. Meyeres in Odin, Kansas. He preceded her in death on October 19, 1989.

Survivors include: son David Meyeres of Great Bend; daughter, Bonnie Cain and husband Todd of Sterling; brother, Leo Frenzel of Great Bend; and grandchildren Bailee Cain, Stephanie O’Connell, and Scott Cain.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Stephen, brothers, Frank, Joe, August, Larry, and William E. Frenzl and sisters, Marie Meyeres, Theresa Wondra, Dorothy Reif, and Gertrude Hickel.

Friends may call 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with family present from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Vigil and Rosary will be 7 p.m. Sunday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 15, 2018, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Odin, celebrated by Father Ted Stoecklein. Burial will follow in Holy Family Cemetery, Odin.

Donald E. Kimber

GREAT BEND – Donald E. Kimber, 86, passed away October 9, 2018, at Hays Medical Center, Hays. He was born December 13, 1931, to Howard and Genevie (Yahne) Kimber. He married Jean Suedekum on January 27, 1952 at Great Bend. She survives.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Donald was a member of the Central Baptist Church and an independent contract pumper in the oilfield. Donald graduated from Great Bend High School with the Class of 1950. He served in the Army Reserves at the time of the Korean War. He was an avid polka and square dancer for many years. He enjoyed camping, traveling, playing cards and being with family and friends.

Survivors include, wife, Jean of the home; two daughters, Rhonda VonFeldt and husband Randy and Brenda Denning and husband Hank, all of Great Bend; three brothers, Norman Kimber and wife Jean of Hoisington, Russell Kimber and wife Donna of Great Bend and Leo Kimber and wife Kathy of Kansas City; one grandson, Dalton VonFeldt and one great-granddaughter, Ava VonFeldt. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Genevie Kimber and a sister, Shirley Bobeck.

Cremation has taken place and visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Friday, October 12, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 13, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor John Grumon presiding. Inurnment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery. Funeral service will be Saturday, October 13, 2018, at 3:00 P.M. at the United Methodist Church, Burdett, Kansas.

Archie L. Hunter

Dateline – Hoisington 

Archie L. Hunter, 78, died October 8, 2018, at Sandstone Heights Nursing Home, Little River, Kansas.  He was born July 31, 1940, at Manila, Arkansas, the son of John and Clara (Downs) Hunter.

Archie graduated from Hays High School in 1958.

A longtime resident of Hoisington, living in Hays previously, he was a seismographic observer or “doodlebugger”.  He worked for Seis Tech and Exploration-GeoSearch retiring in 2002.

Archie was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the NRA.  An outdoor enthusiast he loved hunting and fishing and spending his summers at beautiful Lake Wilson.

On January 11, 1960, he married Lillian Marie Begler in Ellis, Kansas.  She preceded him in death on February 24, 2010.

Survivors include; five children, Wesley Hunter of Salina, Gary Hunter of Hoisington, Curtis Hunter and wife Connie of Hoisington, Lily Fry and husband Chris of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and Susan Lang and companion Kevin Hickel of Hoisington; two sisters, Connie Horine of Arkansas City and Shirley Hunter of Hays; 6 grandchildren, Jonathan Hunter, Joshua Hunter, Phillip Fry, Seth Hunter, Lydia Fry, and Muriel Nicole Pohlman; 5 step grandchildren, Blaize, Megan, Kyler, Kale, and Collin Schlochtermeier; and 3 great grandchildren, Cambree, Elaina, and Finnley.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and an infant brother, J.W. Hunter.

Friends may sign the book 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, October 13, 2018, at St. John Catholic Church Cemetery, Hoisington.

Norma Lynn Bean

GREAT BEND – Norma Lynn Bean (Trent), passed away at her home peacefully with family at her side on October 6, 2018. She was born in Dodge City, to Cyril F. and Rhea (Crego) Trent, on July 1, 1936. Norma graduated from Dodge City High School where she was a cheerleader and Football Homecoming Queen. She married Paul A. Bean in Great Bend, on April 19, 1957.  To this marriage were two children, Gregory A. Bean and Paula L. (Bean) Schwartzkopf.

Norma was of the Presbyterian faith. She was a dental assistant and receptionist for a chiropractor. Norma enjoyed planting flowers, working in the yard and played bridge for 53 years. She enjoyed doing yoga with her daughter for 22 years and loved to go gambling.

Survivors include, her husband Paul, of the home for 61 years; a daughter, Paula Schwartzkopf and companion Tim Newby of Great Bend; one grandson, Jay A. Schwartzkopf of Great Bend; one sister, Karen Rader of Dodge City; one sister-in-law, Theresa Trent, and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, Cy and Rhea Trent; mother-in-law, Mildred Bean; a son, Greg Bean; a sister Lorea Abel, and a brother, Butch Trent.

As per her wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no viewing, however, friends may come to Bryant Funeral Home, Wednesday, October 10, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to sign the register book. Services are planned for a later date at Fort Dodge Veteran’s Cemetery, Dodge City. Memorials are suggested to the Golden Belt Home Health & Hospice, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Lucille Lucas

GREAT BEND – Lucille Lucas, 85, passed away October 3, 2018, at Medicalodges of Great Bend. She was born September 12, 1933 at Levelland, Texas to Euris and Henrietta (Luker) Meaders. She married Gerald Lucas, July 26, 1953, at Frederick, Oklahoma.

Coming from Enid, Oklahoma in 1964, Lucille was a Great Bend resident. She graduated from Loveland, Oklahoma High School with the Class of 1951 and the Phillips University in Oklahoma with her Bachelor’s degree in Education. She taught English at the Harrison Jr High and Harrison Middle School in Great Bend, for 31 years, retiring July 1, 1995. She was a leader of the Bethel Guardian of Job Daughters in Great Bend for 8 1/2 years. She held memberships in GBEA, NEA, KNEA, Eastern Star, KAMLE Association. Lucille loved teaching and her students and was an avid quilter.

Survivors include, husband Gerald of the home; son Gary Lucas and wife JoAnne of Ottawa; one sister, Louise Courtney of Hobart, Oklahoma; and three grandchildren, Rosalyn Lucas, Ben Lucas and Alex Lucas. She was preceded in death by a sister, Lucie Williams.

Visitation will be held, Friday, October 12, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., at Bryant Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 13, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Celebrant JoAnne Lucas presiding. MARY LAVINA “AUNT TEACH” SCHEUERMAN

Mary Lavina “Aunt Teach” Scheuerman, age 88 years, of Bison, Kansas, passed away on Monday, October 1, 2018 after a brief illness. Lavina was born on March 30, 1930 at Larned, Kansas to John F. and Essie Pauline (Baugher) Welch. She graduated from Garfield High School and continued her education at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Education Degree. She later received her Masters Degree from Fort Hays State College in Hays, Kansas. Lavina was united in marriage to Glenn K. Scheuerman on June 6, 1954 at the United Methodist Church in Garfield, Kansas. Glenn preceded her in death on February 22, 2007. Lavina taught school in Pratt, Kansas and at Otis-Bison USD #403 in Bison for many years prior to her retirement. She loved all children, and even after retiring Lavina tutored students, especially with reading. She loved to read and bake for others. Lavina was a member of the National Education Association, the Kansas National Education Association, USD #403 Teacher’s Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, the International Reading Association, the Joy Club and the Sunshine Extension Unit, and was a former member of Dorian and Priscilla Club and the Village Club. She was also a longtime member of the Bison United Methodist Church and the Bison United Methodist Women at Bison, Kansas.

Survivors include one brother, David B. Welch of Larned, Kansas; two sisters: Edwyna (and her husand, Robert) Barstow of Franklin, New York and Linda Drews of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews. Lavina was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her son, David Glenn Scheuerman.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at the Bison United Methodist Church in Bison, Kansas with Pastor Angie Vertz officiating. Interment will be in Lone Star Cemetery near Bison, Kansas. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday at the Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse, Kansas, where the family will greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Church Visitation will be held from 9:30 AM to 10:20 AM on Saturday at the church. Ralph James Dolezal

GREAT BEND – On October 1, 2018, God called Ralph James Dolezal to his heavenly home. He reached the age of 99 years, 3 months and one day. He resided for a short time at Medicalodges of Great Bend. He was born June 30, 1919, at rural Timken, to Martin and Emma (Chlumsky) Dolezal. He married Margaret Eloise Grow on June 3, 1948, at Great Bend. She survives.

Coming from Rush County in 1948, Ralph was a Great Bend resident.  He was a farmer, stockman, and carpenter, and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, a life member of the American Legion Argonne Post 180 and former member of I.O.O.F, all of Great Bend. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII.

Survivors include, wife, Eloise Dolezal of the home; one son, William J. Dolezal, Sr. and wife Joleen of Beatrice, Nebraska; one daughter, Dianne Willesden and husband Bob of Great Bend; one sister, Laura Reiser and husband Elmer of Great Bend; six grandchildren, William J. Dolezal, Jr., Brian Ewing and fiancé Jenni Miller, Brandy Gaddis and husband Mark, Tiffany Nily and husband David, Aimee Farris and husband Bill and Robert Willesden, III; nineteen great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Randall Mark Dolezal and one granddaughter, Destiny Dolezal.

Arthur V. Reif

Dateline – Great Bend 

Arthur V. Reif, 72, died September 30, 2018, at his home in Great Bend. He was born October 4, 1945, in Hoisington, Kansas, the son of Alfred and Clara (Polzin) Reif.

Arthur graduated from Osborne High School in 1963. He then served in the United States Navy as a RD-3 during the Vietnam War.

He was a resident of Great Bend, previously in Hoisington and Osborne. Arthur was the owner of Petroleum Electric Company for 30 years.

He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish, the American Petroleum Institute Western Kansas Chapter, and the Kansas Independent Oil and Gas Association.

Survivors include: daughter, Sheryl (Travis) Peak and, stepdaughter, Nicole (Jody) Messersmith, all of Great Bend; grandchildren, Allison Peak and Braydan Peak; step grandchildren, Kiana (Emmanuel) Ferrel, Darah Messersmith, and Devin Messersmith; step great grandchildren, Madelyn Ferrell, Jasilyn, Jaxon, and Sebastion Messersmith; four brothers, Charles (Lucille) Reif of Plainville, Robert Reif of Arizona, Alfred (Anne) Reif of Osborne, Victor Reif of Osborne; four sisters, Alice Snyder, Oologah, Oklahoma, Inez Vohs of Haysville, Virginia Wrench of Manhattan, and Theresa (Ron) Boxum of Lebanon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Edgar Reif, sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Yarnell, maternal grandparents, William & Kathryn Polzin, and paternal grandparents, Antone H. and Josephine Reif.

Friends may call 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Casket will be closed.

Vigil and Rosary will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.

Ida “Fay” Smith

GREAT BEND – Ida “Fay” Smith, passed away at Brookdale Senior Living, Great Bend, on September 26, 2018. She was born May 29, 1925, at Protection, Kansas, the daughter of Roy and Mary (Huff) Toothaker. She graduated from Protection High School in 1943. She then went to Wesely Hospital School of Nursing in Wichita, Kansas, where she graduated as a registered nurse in 1947. She then graduated from Kansas State University in 1948.

She married Calvin Fay Smith on June 5, 1949, in Wilmore, Kansas. He passed away March 18, 1979 after 29 years of marriage. She was an excellent seamstress, making clothes and costumes for holiday and church programs. She attended many churches from her youth on and was very active in each of them.

She worked as a RN for Dr. Polson, Dr. Shuetz, Dr. Kirby and Dr. David Wilson until retirement. She loved to walk and keep active, playing board games and cards, call on shut ins at nursing homes, the prison ministry, Relay for Life, Judgement House and Meals on Wheels.

Survivors include, one son, Eric R. Smith and wife Cindy of Great Bend; one daughter, Anita L. Davis of Great Bend; one brother, David Toothaker of Wichita; one sister, Bernice Smith of Hutchinson; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Calvin Fay Smith; seven sisters, Alice Baker, Mable Bogden, Floy Nixon, Myrtle Clark, twin sister May Thorpe, Melva Huck and infant sisters, Ethel and Verlie Toothaker; and two brothers Thomas and Austin Toothaker.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, September 30, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 1, 2018, at First Church of the Nazarene, with Pastors Josh and Amy Foster presiding. Interment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery, north of Great Bend, Kansas.
