Marilyn Mumford

Dateline: Great Bend, Kansas 

Marilyn Mumford, 75, left us for her heavenly home on September 28, 2018, passing away at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood.  Born Marilyn Miller to Leonard and Verla (Dyke) Miller, on July 18, 1943, in Oberlin.

In 1963, she married Billy Milford and soon had three daughters.  Bill passed away in 1973.  She then married James Mumford on December 21, 1974, and had another daughter.  She spent her life taking care of her family and making friends through her various jobs, including; Dilly’s Mexican Restaurant, McDonald’s, and Sunflower Diversified Services.  Marilyn was a friend to everyone she met.

She leaves behind; husband, James; daughters, Tricia Mix and husband Sean, Becky Hopkins, Bobbie Milford and Crystal Mumford; three sisters, Snowlene Coffield, Delsie Bittel and husband Danny and Sherri Byerly; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.  She joins; her parents; brother, Jack; sister, Laura, in her forever life.

Services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday October 3, 2018 at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Don Paden officiating. There will be no visitation, as cremation has taken place.  There will be a private family inurnment at a later date.  The family has requested colorful clothing be donned for the service.  Memorials may be given to Golden Belt Humane Society, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

William Clayton “Bill” Jones, Sr.

Dateline – Hoisington 

William Clayton “Bill” Jones, Sr., 71, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on September 24, 2018, at Via Christi Hospital at St. Francis, Wichita, Kansas.

He was born December 1, 1946, in Denver, Colorado, the son of Ernest Warren and Ula Jean (Shannon) Jones. Bill graduated in 1965 from Hoisington High School.

A longtime resident of Hoisington, Bill retired in 2011.

On May 17, 1969, he married Shirley L. Kisner in Hoisington, Kansas. She preceded him in death on February 25, 2012.

Survivors include; three children, Shannon E. Jones and wife Stephanie of Claflin, Becci L. Starkey and husband Jess of Hoisington, and Will C. Jones, Jr. and companion Jennifer of Great Bend; five grandchildren, Seth Jones, Sawyer Starkey, Jessica Starkey, Taylor Jones, and Madison Jones; and a great grandson, Aiden Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and an infant son, James D. Jones.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Monday, October 1, 2018, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Mike Joiner presiding. Burial will follow in St. John Catholic Cemetery.

Friends may call 1-5 p.m., with family to receive friends from 3-5 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home and 9 a.m. until service on Monday.

Mary Louise Adams

GREAT BEND – Mary Louise Adams, 88, passed away at Medicalodges of Great Bend on September 24, 2018. She was born on January 4, 1930, at Great Bend, to John P. and Marie T. (Mohr) Adams.

A lifetime resident of Great Bend, Mary loved needle work, crocheting, puzzles, crafts, bingo and taking walks. She will be remembered for her pumpkin pie, deviled eggs and pickled beets.

Survivors include, one brother, Don Adams and wife Loretta of Grandview, Texas; two nieces, Debbie Schreiber of Hewitt, Texas and Sheryl Fernandez and husband Jerry of Brownwood, Texas; one great nephew, John Schreiber and wife Tonya of Covington, Texas; one great niece, Emerald Fernandez of Brownwood, Texas, and two cousins, Pauline Schneider of Great Bend and Willis Adams of West Palm Beach, Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Lynn Ann Adams.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday, September 28, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 29, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Rev. Dick Ogle presiding. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Great Bend Cemetery Rose Garden, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Maynard “Max” McNett

GREAT BEND – Maynard “Max” McNett, 71, passed away at Select Specialty Hospital in Kansas City, on September 23, 2018. He was born December 5, 1946, to Maynard and Clara (Weber) McNett. He was married twice in his lifetime. In 1969, he married Barbara Burns in Great Bend. A son was born of the marriage. In 1980, he married Joann Norlund in Claremore, Oklahoma. A son and daughter were born of their marriage.

Having lived in the Great Bend and Larned areas for most of his life, Max served in the Vietnam war and was of the Catholic faith. He attended St. Rose Catholic School. He worked construction for Falcon, Marlette and Curry Homes and later owned his own company, M & M Construction. He also drove over the road for Jack B. Kelley and TransAm Trucking. While his children were young, he came off the road to serve as the custodian for the Methodist Church in Larned.

Survivors include, two sons, Doug McNett and wife Jennifer of Larned and Joshua McNett and companion Lacey Brewer of Tonkawa, Oklahoma; one daughter, Amanda Lamb and husband Matt of Olsburg; one brother, Sam McNett of Great Bend; five grandchildren, Ross McNett, Reed McNett, Ella McNett, Emma McNett and William Lamb; three nephews and multiple cousins. His parents preceded him in death.

Whether you knew him as Maynard or Max, his gentle demeanor and playful wit undeniably brought smiles to those around him.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 6, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home with Father Don Bedore presiding. Inurnment will be in Golden Belt Memorial Park, Great Bend. Military Rites will be conducted by the United States Army. Memorials are suggested to the Prince of Peace Parrish, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Patricia Marie Koch

GREAT BEND – Patricia Marie Koch, 87, passed away August 24, 2018, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend.  She was born March 18, 1931, in Lucas to James and Anna (Stodola) Aksamit. She married John Koch, April 4, 1954, in Lucas.  He died May 20, 1975.

Patricia worked at an orphanage in Denver and as an in home caregiver for many years. She also had worked at the K18 Café and Lucas Nursing Home for many years.  She was a member of the Cornerstone Fellowship in Great Bend and loved to garden.

Survivors include, two daughters, Patsy Hiss and husband Bob of Great Bend and Susan Hayes and husband Allen of Reno, Nevada; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Carrol Aksamit of Sausalito, California and Richard Aksamit of Russellville, Arkansas and one sister, Camilla Smith of Alexandria, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Leonard and Allan Aksamit; and four sisters, Anna Meitler, Joan Conklin, Agnes DeForest and Dorothy Tomkins.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at the First Christian Church, Great Bend, with Rev. Joshua Leu presiding. Graveside Inurnment will be at 2:30 p.m., in the Lucas Cemetery, Lucas. Memorials are suggested to be made In Lieu of Flowers to the First Christian Church Outreach Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Sara A. Schell Mostrom

Dateline: Great Bend, Kansas 

Sara A. Schell Mostrom, 78, passed away Thursday September 20, 2018, at her home in Great Bend.  She was born September 15, 1940, in Garfield Ark the daughter of Burl and Cleva (Dean) Schell.

Sara has been a Great Bend resident since 2000 coming from LaJunita, CO. She was united in marriage to Carl Mostrom October 11, 1955 in Bentonville Ark. He passed away March 5, 2018. Sara was a LPN at several care homes and St Rose Hospital. She loved to crochet and read. She loved spending time with her family.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Mostrom of Topeka, John Mostrom and wife Shawn of Glen Rock WY.; one daughter Brenda Loesch and husband Jerry of Great Bend; two brothers Curt Schell and wife Connie of Derby, and David Schell and wife Donna of Ulysses; one sister Debra Bowman and husband Jim of Albert; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by son Tony, sisters Betty Bilus and Mary Hinkel.

Graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday September 29, 2018, at Garfield Cemetery, with Pastor Larry Schumacher officiating. No visitation as cremation has taken place.

Memorials have been established with the Alzheimer’s Association or the Heart Association or Golden Belt Health and Hospice, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Keitha Ann Morgan Reed

GREAT BEND – Keitha Ann Morgan Reed, 72, passed away September 18, 2018, at Medicalodges of Great Bend. She was born April 26, 1946 in Wichita, to Earl and Lillian (Holland) Morgan.

Coming from Larned in 2008, Keitha was a Great Bend resident. She was a CMA for the Larned St. Joseph Hospital for 15 years and worked in different care homes.  She loved to give to St. Jude and help feed the children. She loved to read and always studied her bible. Keitha especially loved spending time with her family.

Survivors include, one daughter, Stacy Deeann Lawrence and husband Randy of Great Bend; five sons, Brian Scott Reed of Lewis, Steven Bradley Reed of Great Bend, Stan Leland Reed and wife Kelly of Great Bend, Dr. Henry Shane Reed and wife Dawn of Salina and Earl Shawn Reed and wife Melinda of Lake City, Tennessee; three brothers, Kenneth Morgan and wife Karen of Wichita, Kyle Morgan and wife Vickie of Rose Hill and Lance Given and wife Ginger of Wichita; sixteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Kevin Morgan.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial Service will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 22, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Matt Schaffner presiding. Private Family Inurnment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to Muscular Dystrophy Association, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Sharon K. Offutt, of Sugar Land, Texas, passed away Sunday, September 16, 2018.  Graveside service will be Friday, September 21, 2018, at 10:00 A.M. at the La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse, Kansas.

Janet Marie Schettler

GREAT BEND – Janet Marie Schettler, 85, passed away, September 17, 2018, at Medicalodges of Great Bend. She was born August 12, 1933, at Ogallalah, Nebraska, to Ralph and Norma (Brice) Read.  She married Alvin K. Schettler, October 19, 1952, at Belgrade, Nebraska.  He died September 6, 2016.

Coming from Albert in 1965, Janet was a Great Bend resident. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was involved in many ladies’ groups. She was a homemaker and had previously worked as a secretary for the Alexander Film Company in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She also served on the Election Board for many years.

Survivors include, two sons, Mike Schettler and wife Terri of Great Bend and David Schettler and wife Nola of Omaha, Nebraska; one daughter, Nancy Brady and husband Dale of Albert; one brother, Jack Read of Idaho Falls, Idaho; six grandchildren, Brandy Maneth and husband Mike, Kim Duran and husband Paul, Matthew Schettler and wife Jessica, Michael Schettler and wife Keleigh, Cait Boyer and husband Brian and Jayme Mayers and husband Jason; and nine great-grandchildren, Bryce Maneth, Kolton Maneth, Hannah Duran, Brady Duran, Samantha Mayers, Alex Mayers, Stevie Mayers, Blakely Boyer and Jackson Schettler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin K. Schettler and infant brother, Jerry Read.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Sunday, September 23, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 24, 2018, with Pastor Pastor John Brudvig presiding. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery North.  The family suggests memorials be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Golden Belt Humane Society, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Forrest Harry Button

Forrest Harry Button, 96, died Monday, September 17, 2018, at Rush County Memorial Hospital, Intermediate Swing Bed Unit, La Crosse, Kansas.

He was born June 15, 1922 at Rush Center, Kansas, the son of Roy and Verna (Hallett) Button. He graduated from La Crosse Rural High School in 1940. He farmed for one year before attending Kansas State University for one year and Fort Hays State University for one year. He then returned to farming, and continued to do so in both Rush and Pawnee counties from 1944 to 1993.

Forrest was a former member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church for many years where he was an active member. He was most recently an active member of the United Methodist Church, La Crosse, Kansas. He was also a member of  the Walnut City Lodge #215, Rush Center, Kansas, for over 70 years, and was a charter member of the Rush County Speculators in March, 1998. He served as the Grand Marshal of the La Crosse Alumni parade in 2015.  He was also a member of the Walnut Valley Senior Center, Rush Center, Kansas.

On September 2, 1945 he married Blanche Patricia Haller at her parents’ home in Otis, Kansas. She died on August 3, 2015.

Other survivors include one son, Thomas Harry and wife Kathy of Oakley, Kansas, one daughter, Janice Herman and husband Don of Benton, Kansas, and daughter-in-law Pamela Button of Whitesboro, Oklahoma, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by son Robert Dale Button, infant sons David Lee and Richard Jay, his parents, sister Dorothy Jean Rice and brother Kenneth Roy Button.

Visitation will be Thursday, September 20, 2018, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.

Church visitation will be Friday, September 21, 2018, from 1:00 P.M. to 1:50 P.M. at the United Methodist Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Funeral service will be Friday, September 21, 2018, at 2:00 P.M. at the United Methodist Church, La Crosse, Kansas, with Pastor Angie Vertz officiating.  Interment will be in the La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests memorials to Rush County Memorial Hospital, Intermediate Swing Bed Unit, La Crosse, Kansas, or the United Methodist Church, La Crosse, Kansas.
