Joseph E. Roesler

LARNED – Joseph E. Roesler, 86, passed away September 16th, 2018, at Diversicare of Larned, Kansas. He was born April 28, 1932, in rural Bushton, Kan., the son of Joseph and Pauline Schoenecke Roesler.

A longtime Larned resident, he was a farmer and a graduate of Claflin High School. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Economics from Kansas State University in 1956.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings: Marion Roesler, Virginia Roesler Casteen, Richard Roesler, Karen Roesler Rosencrans, and niece Sheryl Casteen.  Survivors include:  Nieces and Nephews, Suzanne Roesler Holmes of Kansas, Judith Roesler and  Sara Roesler, both of North Carolina; William Casteen, Carole Casteen, Richard Casteen, Paula Casteen of California and John Casteen of Kansas; Machelle Roesler Willems of Kansas;  Emily Casteen, Grandniece of Kansas; Sister-in-law Joan Roesler of North Carolina; and Joseph Garcia, devoted friend and caregiver of Kansas.

Funeral will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018 at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington, with Pastor Diana Webster officiating, with family greeting friends before the service, 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.   Burial will be in the Claflin Cemetery following the service. Viewing will be from 9 to 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, 2018, at Nicholson-Rickie Funeral Home. Trevor Robert Cates

CLAFLIN – Trevor Robert Cates, 40, passed away September 17, 2018, in rural Stafford County. He was born in Great Bend, December 11, 1977, to Bob and Alvita (Tinkel) Cates.  He married Megan Drake August 1, 2009 at Estes Park, Colorado.  She survives.

A lifetime Claflin resident, Trevor was a member of Immaculate Conception Church.  He was an ASE certified auto technician for his father, at Bob’s Service Center in Claflin.  Trevor enjoyed golfing, cars, grilling and camping.

Survivors include, his wife, Megan Cates of the home; daughters, Sierra Drake of Salina, Emma Williams and Hadley Cates of the home; his parents, Bob and Alvita Cates of Claflin; one sister, Tamara Dody and husband Jason of Claflin; four nephews, Paxton, Peyton, Prycen and Parker Dody of Claflin and grandmother, Thelma Cates.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Albert and Laura Tinkel and V. E. Cates.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 20, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home and from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Claflin, with Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 21, 2018, at Immaculate Conception Church in Claflin with Father Terrance Klein presiding.  Interment will be in the Claflin Cemetery.

Sister Philomena Hrencher OP

OBITUARY NOTICE:  Sister Philomena Hrencher OP

Sister Philomena Hrencher, 95, died September 14, 2018, in the Dominican Sisters’ convent infirmary, Great Bend.

Born October 24, 1923, in Sharon, Kansas, as Irene Mary Hrencher, Sister Philomena was the daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine Eck Hrencher. She entered the Dominican Sisters’ Community September 14, 1937, and pronounced her first vows August 13, 1941. She celebrated seventy-five years of religious profession in 2016.

Sister Philomena ministered as a teacher of grades 1 – 8 in parochial elementary schools as her first career, 1943 – 1955. After receiving her Masters in Hospital Administration from St. Louis University, she coordinated the four hospitals sponsored by the Dominican sisters and served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. Later she served as Assistant Treasurer for the Dominican Sisters and as a Councilor on the Sisters Leadership Team. She retired at the motherhouse in 1991.

Sister Philomena is survived by her Dominican Sisters of Peace religious community and one sister, Claudine Meng, of Severy, KS.

Sister Philomena’s body will be brought to the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend, on Sunday, September 16, 2018, where it will lie in state until the wake service Tuesday, September 18, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. the same day, Tuesday, September 18, 2018, with Rev. Robert Schremmer presiding. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery. Both the wake and the funeral will be held at the convent (see chapel address above).

Rita Lavonne Slous

   Rita Lavonne (Hochanadel) Slous, age 86, Springfield passed away Friday, September 7th, 2018 in her home surrounded by her loving family.
Rita was born November 29, 1931 to Lawrence and Maurine Hochanadel. She graduated from Olmitz High School and attended Kansas Newman University, Wichita, Kansas as a registered Lab Technologist. Rita was united in marriage to Bill Slous, who was from Whellersburg, OH on October 1, 1952 in Hoisington, KS. She started her hospital career at the Hosinigton Lutheran Hospital. Rita retired from Cox North Medical Center as a night supervisor in the hospital labratory. She enjoyed doing ceramics, casinos and playing card games, her greatest love was spending time with her family.
Survivors include her children, Susan Slous, Douglas Slous, Michael Slous, and Nita Brack, all of Springfeld, MO, Robert Slous and wife Tracey, Branson, MO, Scott Slous and wife Karen, St Augustine, FL, Dan Slous and wife Heather, Salida, CO; seventeen grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; five brothers, Dave, Max, Don, Mark, and Gery Hochanadel; five sisters, Rosalie Robl, Judy Flax, Mary Smith, Diane Schwartz; and a host of family and friends. The family would like to make a special thank you to Sister Bernadette Goesling from SEAS Church for her support and friendship through this journey.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bill Slous, son, Mark Slous, parents, Lawrence and Maurine Hochanadel, brother, Tony Hochanadel, sister, Theresa Johnson, and three brothers-in-law, Gene Flax, Martin Robl, and Arlon Johnson.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., with Rosary and Vigil to begin at 7p.m. Thursday, September 13, 2018 at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m., Friday, September 14, 2018, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, celebrated by Father Anselm Eke. Inurnment will be in Hoisington Cemetery. Gladys Mae Webster

GREAT BEND – Gladys Mae Webster, 77, passed away at Medicalodges of Great Bend (formerly Cherry Village), on September 4, 2018.  She was born November 5, 1940, in Hays, Kansas, to Edgar Joseph & Helen Lucinda (Hammerschmidt) Sanders. She married Cornelius Edward “Buddy” Webster, July 4, 1959, in Great Bend. He died July 23, 2008.

A resident of Great Bend since 1957, coming from the Stockton and Victoria area, Gladys was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose and the Altar Society.  She worked at the Family Crisis Center and was a Foster Care parent for over 35 years.

Survivors include, one daughter, Pam Vainer and husband David of Great Bend; two sons, Charles Webster and wife Debbie of Great Bend and David Webster and wife Catherine of Glenwood, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Jeremy Vainer, Matthew Vainer, Cory Webster, Micah Webster, Abby Coffey, Megan Vainer and Chelsea Schutzman and eight great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, C.E.  “Buddy” Webster; one daughter, Brenda Brown; three brothers, Dennis, Leon and Donald Sanders, and two sisters, Elizabeth Zimmerman and Charlotte Shearrer.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday, September 7, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home, with an Altar Society Rosary at 4:00 p.m., and Vigil Service with Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 9:30 a.m., Saturday, September 8, 2018, with Father Ted Stoecklein presiding, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend.  Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to the St. Rose Rosary Garden or St. Francis Community Services, to benefit the G. Gerald R. Hardten

Gerald R. Hardten, 73, passed away September 4, 2018, at Country Living, Ellinwood, Kansas.  He was born November 5, 1944, in his parents’ home in Claflin, the son of Fred and Naomi (Nagel) Hardten. A lifetime area resident he graduated Claflin High School in 1962.  He attended Fort Hays State College and joined the National Guard attending officer’s training school and receiving the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He was proud of his time in the National Guard, serving nine years.

He married Janice “Jan” Weber in May 14, 1966, in Claflin. She survives.

Gerald worked alongside his dad at Hardten Service Station, owned by his dad, for many years. After his dad passed Gerald owned and operated the station until he retired in 2007.

Gerald enjoyed reading, especially history, playing board games and playing cards with his wife and son on days off.

Survivors include; his wife of 52 years, Janice “Jan” Hardten of the home; son, Gerald “Jerry” Fred Hardten of Great Bend, sister-in-law, Carol Hardten of Olathe, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Reta June (Hardten) Plowman,  brother, Ronald David Hardten, father and mother-in-law, John J. Moran, Jr. and Cassilda D. (Schartz) Moran, father-in-law, Hurley R. Weber.

He leaves behind two precious little dogs, Ollie and Stanly.

Having dementia for several years he was cared for at home, where he wanted to be, by his loving wife, family and good friends until the last week of his life.  I will truly miss you Gerald. God Bless you my husband and now you can rest in peace.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, September 8, 2018, at Claflin Cemetery, with Pastor Diana Webster presiding. Military honors will be conducted by the Kansas Army National Guard Honor Guard.

Friends may call 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 pm at the funeral home.

Helen R. Curran

GREAT BEND – Helen R. Curran, 88, passed away at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend, on September 3, 2018.  She was born October 21, 1929, in Billings, Missouri, to Hubert John & Neva Mary (Burch) Gibson.  She married Robert Lloyd Curran December 30, 1956 at Billings, Missouri.  He died February 7, 2002.

Coming from Louisville, Kentucky in 1969, Helen resided in Great Bend.  She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Southwest Missouri State in Home Economics, having been self-employed.  Helen was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Cougar Booster Club, the Community Theater, E.H.U. and the Lake Barton Golf Club.  She loved to play bridge, golf and sew.  She also loved to play board games with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include, one son, Thomas L. Curran and wife, Tina of Great Bend; one daughter, Susan C. Schneweis and husband Alan of Ellinwood; six grandchildren, Travis Schneweis, Erin Grosshuesch and husband Calvin; Bryce Schneweis; Jenna and Kirsten Curran and Kyrie Bair; and three great-grandchildren, Marla and Mison Sinn and Abel Pletcher, with one on the way.  She was preceded in death by, her husband, Robert Lloyd Curran; one brother, Leland Gibson; and three sisters, Ruby Medlin, Mabel Zoller and Juanita Markey.

Jack Estelle Durbin

Dateline: Great Bend, Kansas

Jack Estelle Durbin, 91, passed away September 1, 2018, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington.  He was born October 2, 1926, at Kansas City, MO, to Zeno Estelle and Alma Ruth (Holsapple) Durbin.  Jack married Ramona May (Huseman) Kohls May 9, 1981, at Enid, OK.  Ramona passed away February 26, 2015.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and Korean Conflict, obtaining the rank of MM 3rd Class.

A Great Bend resident since 1981, coming from Wichita, Houston and Abilene, Tex., Jack had been a HVAC specialist for Fuller Brush Industries for 17 years, retiring in 1992.  He held previous employment with Boeing Airplane Co., and Kansas Refinery Helium Co.  He was a member of V.F.W. Post 3111, American Legion Argonne Post 180 and the Eagles, and Fellowship of Faith Bible Study, all of Great Bend.

Survivors include; step sons, Doug Kohls and wife Colleen of Great Bend, Phil Kohls and wife Kathy of Garden City, and Kent Kohls and wife Terri of Great Bend; step daughters, Lana Penney and husband Mike of Great Bend, Terry Bigheart and husband Mike of Enid, OK, Peggy Bartholomew and husband John of Oklahoma City, and Eva Neuforth of Great Bend; half-brother, Gerald Martin of Wichita; one half-sister, Alice James of Florida; 18 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren, and his beloved dog Sissy.

Jack was preceded in death by; his parents; step father, Homer Martin; son-in-law, Gene Neuforth; grandson, Gavin Neuforth; and one half brother, James Martin.

Graveside services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 5, 2018, at Great Bend Cemetery, with Rev. Arlyn Thielenhaus.  Military Honors will be conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard and The Legion Riders.  There will be no visitation, as cremation has taken place.  Donations may be made to the Golden Belt Humane Society, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Patrick “Pat” Depperschmidt

Patrick “Pat” Depperschmidt, also known as “”The Lawnmower Man” 87, La Crosse, Kansas, died Friday, August 31, 2018, at his home.

Mr. Depperschmidt was born November 1, 1930, in Liebenthal, Kansas, the son of John and Bernadine (Werth) Depperschmidt.  He was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas, living in La Crosse for 55 years.  A 1949 graduate of Schoenchen High School, Schoenchen, Kansas, he was a machinist for Weitzel Manufacturing, La Crosse, Kansas, for many years, and later worked in the maintenance department of Rush County Memorial Hospital, La Crosse, Kansas.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas; Knights of Columbus Council 2970, Third Degree, Life Honorary Member, Liebenthal, Kansas; and American Legion Post 180, Great Bend, Kansas.

He was a United States Army veteran, serving from 1954 to 1956.

He loved to go to the lake, fish, boat, and camp.  Sales and auctions; repairing lawnmowers; Friday night cards at Earl’s; and an occasional scotch and water were also favorite activities.

On January 12, 1963, he married Rita Schuckman at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Liebenthal, Kansas.  She preceded him in death August 20, 2008.

Survivors include:  his son and daughter in law, Troy and Sharon Depperschmidt, Kansas City, Missouri; and one sister, Viola Enslinger, La Crosse, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and eight siblings.

We would like to thank his dear friend, Larry Muth, for assisting Pat to remain independently living at home and the compassionate care of his friend and primary P.A., Dodie Martin.

Visitation will be Monday, September 3, 2018, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.  A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 P.M.

Funeral service will be Tuesday, September 4, 2018, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas, with Father Eric Gyamfi officiating.  Interment will be in the La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse, Kansas.
