Lawrence “Larry” Eugene Rziha

GREAT BEND – Lawrence “Larry” Eugene Rziha passed away October 19, 2019, at Via Christi St. Francis, Wichita. He was born August 4, 1949, at Great Bend, KS, the son of Frank and Gertrude (Schneweis) Rziha. He was united in marriage to Debra (Burton) Unrein on May 7, 1976, at Great Bend, KS. They later divorced. He then married Brenda Locker on June 2, 1997 in Eureka Springs, AR. They later divorced.

A Barton county resident for life, currently residing in Great Bend, Larry attended Odin schools and was a 1967 graduate of Odin High School. He was a refrigeration maintenance technician for Tyson. He was a Sergeant in the United States Air Force. He loved gardening and tinkering with things. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Survivors include, one son, Samuel Rziha and wife Chelsey of Wichita; three daughters, Valerie Ruiz and husband John of Great Bend, Lorie Weston and husband Vince of Olathe, and Candance Seely of Bartow, FL; four brothers, Leonard Rziha and wife Joan of Hoisington, Jim Rziha and wife Jolene of Great Bend, Gerald Rziha and wife Jeanne of Tampa, and Robert Rziha and wife Nancy of Colorado Springs, CO; three sisters, Bernice Kaiser and husband Marvin of Hays, Mary Anne Hammerschmidt and husband Ron of Topeka, and Cecilia Schreiber and husband Gary of Osborne; and eight grandchildren, Derrick Rziha and wife Molly, Dakota Seely, Jordan Vsetecka, Shaylee Ruiz, Adelaide Weston, Madelyn Weston, Kyle Rziha and Nicole Rziha. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Raymond Rziha; a sister, Carolyn Rziha; and a son-in-law, Troy Seely. 

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at Bryant Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, October 24, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Father Don Bedore presiding and Military Rites conducted by the McConnell Air Force Base. Inurnment will take place at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the Great Bend Fire Department, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Ross Eric Fabin

GREAT BEND – Ross Eric Fabin, 58, passed away October 12, 2019, at his home in Great Bend. He was born September 13, 1961, to George E. and Jeannette (Ruggels) Fabin.

A lifetime Great Bend and Ellinwood resident, Ross was the owner and operator of All Things Chopped in Great Bend, fulfilling his lifelong love of motorcycles. He was also a drug and alcohol counselor. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and being in the outdoors.

Survivors include, his father, George Fabin of Great Bend; three brothers, Mark Fabin of Salina, Craig Fabin and wife Rita of Kansas City, MO, and Brad Fabin of Angola, IN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Jeannette Fabin.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 19, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorials have been suggested to the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks & Recreation for the benefit of Cheyenne Bottoms, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Edith Ione Strohm

Dateline: Great Bend, Kansas

Edith Ione Strohm, 98, passed away Saturday October 12, 2019, at River Bend Assisted Living, Great Bend. She was born January 16, 1921, in Windom, the daughter of Charles E. and Merle (Smith) Rostine. She was united in marriage to Wayne O. Strohm on October 6, 1940, in McPherson. He preceded her in death September 22, 2006.

A resident of Great Bend since 1957 coming from Lyons, Ione was a homemaker.  She was a member of the First Christian Church, Great Bend, Christian Women Fellowship and The Feisty Five.  Ione enjoyed reading, Bible studies, crafts, and cherished fellowship with her family and friends.   

Survivors include one daughter, Dianna Werrick of Oklahoma City; two grandchildren, Andrea Komarek and husband Mike Koerner of Andover, and Mark Komarek of Phoenix, Ariz.; and two great grandchildren, Alyssa Komarek and Ashton Komarek.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Rostine and Charles L. Rostine; three sisters, Delta Bradford, Elma Frey and Drucilla Rostine; and by one grandson, Matthew Komarek.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, October 17, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.  Funeral will be at        2:00 p.m., Friday, October 18, at the First Christian Church, Great Bend, with The Reverend Joshua Leu presiding. Interment will follow in the Great Bend Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Donna M. Fronterhouse

GREAT BEND – Donna M. Fronterhouse, 73, passed away October 10, 2019, at Homestead Assisted Living, Wichita. She was born October 23, 1945, to Louie & Martha (Maier) Bender. She married Terry Fronterhouse in Great Bend on December 18, 1965. He survives.

Donna, a long time resident of Great Bend living previously in Wichita and Phoenix, was a cosmetologist, owning and operating a salon in Great Bend and Phoenix.  She was a current member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Wichita, and formally St. Joseph Catholic Church, Phoenix and Prince of Peace Parish, Great Bend.

Survivors include, husband Terry Fronterhouse of Overland Park; one son, Troy Fronterhouse of Phoenix, AZ; one daughter, Dee Hettinger of Wichita; one sister, Lela Johnston of Phoenix, AZ; two aunts, Eleanora Postlethwaite of Great Bend and Leona Slankard of Wichita; three grandchildren, Natalie Herndon and husband Nicholas of Wichita, and Blake Hettinger and Tate Hettinger, both of Wichita; and four great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m., Monday, October 14, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Altar Society Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and family receiving friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 15, 2019, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend, with Father Louis Trung Dinh Hoang presiding. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Golden Belt Humane Society, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Dorothy M. Kopke

GREAT BEND – Dorothy M. Kopke, 92, passed away October 7, 2019 at Country Place Senior Living, Larned. She was born December 15, 1926 at Lawrence, to Horace Floyd & Francis Lucille (Howard) Nisely. She married Warren H. Kopke on April 15, 1950 at Lawrence.  He died August 4, 2007.

Dorothy was a legal secretary, working alongside her husband in his law practice. She was a member of First Christian Church and loved to travel.

Survivors include, one brother in law; one sister in law; many nieces, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Warren H. Kopke; and one sister in law.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Monday, October 28, 2019 at Bryant Funeral Home. Graveside Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at Great Bend Cemetery, with Pastor Josh Leu presiding. Patricia “Patty” Reynolds

GREAT BEND – Patricia “Patty” Reynolds, 54, passed away October 7, 2019, at her home in Great Bend. She was born September 10, 1965, at Playa San Blas La Libertad, El Salvador, to Serafin & Fidelina (Baos) Arévalo.  She married Curtis Reynolds on May 20, 2003 at Great Bend. He survives.

A Great Bend resident, Patricia was a cashier and translator for the Barton County Health Department. She was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Great Bend. She enjoyed dancing and music from the 1970’s, as well as crocheting and cooking. She especially loved being with her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include, her husband, Curtis Reynolds of the home; her mother, Fidelina Baos and her father, Serafin Arévalo; two sons, Edwin Recinos and wife Susana and Diego Recinos, all of Great Bend; one daughter, Patty Grauer and husband Brenden of Great Bend; one stepson, Adam Reynolds and wife Shelly of Hutchinson; one stepdaughter, Kelly Smith and husband Jay of Kingman; two brothers, Ricardo Arévalo of El Salvador and Rafael Arévalo of Madrid, Spain; two sisters, Cristina Arévalo of Quebec, Canada and Judith Marceca of Durham; nine grandchildren, Kyle, Brent, Grayson, Sutton, Anthony, Jeremiah, Victoria, Lillian and Jace; and one great granddaughter, Joselin.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, October 10, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 11, 2019, at First Assembly of God Church in Great Bend, with Pastor Dwight Dozier presiding. Joyce L. Lofland

GREAT BEND – Joyce L. Lofland, 88, died October 5, 2019, at home with her family by her side. She was born February 10, 1931, in Great Bend, the daughter of Carl and Zoe (Hull) Mohr. On June 18, 1949, she married James R. Lofland in Wichita. He survives.

Joyce was a life time resident of Great Bend and a member of Central Baptist Church. She graduated from Great Bend High School, and later worked at Komarek Jewelry store and the Courthouse Appraisers office. She was very involved in Girl Scouts as a leader, a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Central Baptist Women’s Group and the Great Bend Women’s Temperance League.

Joyce is survived by her husband, James R. Lofland of the home; her children, Janna Huschka and husband Kurt of Hutchinson, Jill Hopper and husband Derrel of Arvada, Col., Jerry Lofland and wife Paige of Great Bend, and Jackie Goosen and husband LoWayne of Freeman, S.D.; her brothers, Jimmy Mohr of Woodbine,  Richard Mohr and wife Nita of Great Bend, and Tommy Mohr of Topeka; her sisters, Rosie Kruckenberg and husband Larry of Great Bend, and Marilyn Kae of Nashville, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Joyce was preceeded in death by her parents and her children, James Lofland and Julia Barnes; her brothers, Carl Mohr, Robert Mohr and Douglas Mohr; and her sister, Gini Sharp.

There will be no visitation, as cremation has taken place.  Memorial services will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019, at Central Baptist Church, with Pastor Daniel Dugas, followed by a meal in the fellowship hall.  A private family inurnment will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Central Baptist Memorial Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Debye Kirkhart

Dateline: Great Bend, Kansas

Debye Kirkhart passed to her heavenly home in the early morning hours of Friday, Oct.4, 2019, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson.

Debye was born April 12, 1950, in Oklahoma City, to James W. and Lela Zell (Monroe) Putman.  She grew up in Perryton, Texas.  Following graduation from Perryton High School in 1969, she attended North Western State College in Alva, Okla. where she met the love of her life, Tommy Wayne Kirkhart.  They were married in Perryton on January 24, 1970.

The couple settled in Forgan, Okla. for the first 20 years of their marriage, moving to Great Bend in 1990.  Two daughters, LaDesha and TaKura, were born to this union.

Debye and Tom spent their 50 years together doing what they loved most – raising their daughters, becoming grandparents and traveling.  She was an involved parent in all aspects of her children’s lives and activities, and to her delight, this continued with her grandchildren, attending school functions and many a ball-game.  Their appetite for traveling took Debye and Tom to a variety of locales around the world through the years.

One look at her flower garden and you knew Debye had a “green thumb” and a passion for gardening.  This was evidenced each year by the abundance of beautiful blooms in her yard.

Survivors include her husband, Tom, of the home; daughters, LaDesha Clark and husband Todd of Great Bend, and TaKura Price and husband Jasen of Salina; one granddaughter, Shailey Clark; three grandsons, Talus and Andin Price, and Cody Clark; sister, Janie Mooneyham of Horseshoe Bay, Texas; nieces, Leslyn Wallace of Horseshoe Bay,  Devyn Haley of Weatherford, Texas, and Becky Powell of Laverne, Okla.;  nephews, Sambo McLain of Hico, Texas, and Shane Kirkhart of Forgan, Okla.; numerous cousins, of which she had a special bond with, Norma Mounts of Perryton, Jan Watson of Midland, Texas, and Biff Yocham of Round Top, Texas; and  by the many friends she cultivated over her life’s path.

Debye was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend, where funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 8, 2019. Visitation will be 2:00 to 9:00 p.m. Monday, October 7, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery, Great Bend.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church Endowment Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Elma Mae Stricker

Dateline – Hoisington

Elma Mae Stricker, 76, died October 3, 2019 at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington.  She was born January 31, 1943, in Great Bend, Kansas, the daughter of Frank and Marie (Klug) Beck.  Elma graduated from Hoisington High School in 1961.

On October 24, 1964, she married Ron D. Stricker at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hoisington.

Elma was a lifetime Barton County resident.  She worked as a sales clerk for Cheyenne Drug in Hoisington for 21 years.  She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Ron Stricker of the home; and son, Jerry Stricker and wife Amanda of Hoisington; three grandsons, Kyler Stricker of Richardson, Texas, and Liam and Ryken Stricker of Hoisington; brother, Gene Beck of Hoisington, sister, Kathy Thompson of Conroe, Texas, twin brother, Elmer Beck and wife Diane of Olathe, and sister, Betty Steiner and husband Kenny of Hoisington.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother, Leo Beck, and two sisters, Bernice Christopher and Helen Urban.

Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., through the week. Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place per Elma’s request.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Ocotber, 12, 2019, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Don Fisher presiding.  Inurnment will follow in Hoisington Cemetery.
