Samuel Clayton Shoaff

GREAT BEND – Samuel Clayton Shoaff, 89, passed away July 12, 2018, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend.  He was born June 11, 1929 at Hardtner, Kan., to Charles L. Sr. and Ruth A. (McCabe) Shoaff.  He married Betty F. Hanzlicek, May 22, 1955 at Wilson, Kan.  She died December 22, 2013.

Samuel was a Great Bend resident coming from Russell in 1952.  He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge and the American Legion Argonne Post #180 all of Great Bend.  He served in the United States Army during the Korean War, obtaining the rank of Staff Sargent, and then worked as a parts-man until he retired.

Survivors include, one son, Brian K. Shoaff and wife Laura of Hays; two sisters, Barbara Majernik of Ulysses, and Dorothy Stephens of Las Vegas, Nev.; one brother, brother, George Shoaff of Las Vegas, Nev.; two granddaughters, Morgan Shoaff of Brooklyn, N.Y and Alexa (Shoaff) Wiens of Hutchinson.  He was preceded in death by brother, Charles Shoaff, Jr.

Memorial Graveside Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 10, 2018, at Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery in WaKeeney, with Rev. Delbert Stanton presiding.  Military Rites will be conducted by the Ft. Riley Honor Guard.  A reception will be held 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, August 11, 2018, at First United Methodist Church, Great Bend.  Memorials are suggested to the Kansas Honor Flight or Kindred Hospice, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Barbara J. Gumbir

GREAT BEND – Barbara J. Gumbir, 77, passed away July 13, 2018, at her home. She was born December 6, 1940 to Jay and Edith Chambers. She married Martin Edmond Gumbir, August 15, 1964, at Great Bend. He died December 23, 1997.

Barbara was a Great Bend resident for most of her life. She worked at Wal-Mart for many years as a stock receiver.

Survivors include, one daughter, Marilyn and husband Kyle Morrison of Salina; one brother, Jerry Chambers of New York; sister in law, Ramona Chambers; two nieces, Glenda Schroth of Joplin, Missouri and Sandra Sharpe of Marysville, Washington, and a nephew, Gary Chambers of Goodman, Missouri; a great niece, Kyra Hughes and great nephew, Brandon Schroth. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Glen and Benny Chambers.

No visitation will take place and Graveside Service will be held Friday, July 20, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the Great Bend Cemetery, with Pastor Larry Schumacher presiding. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Foundation, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Tom Drewel

ELLINWOOD – Tom Drewel, 74, passed away at his home on July 16, 2018.  He was born February 24, 1944, to George and Juanita (Seymour) Drewel.  He married Marie Addington on September 28, 1968, at Great Bend.

A native of Missouri,  he had 18 years in law enforcement in the Barton County Sheriff’s Office, Great Bend Police Department, Hoisington Police Department and was Police Chief in Claflin.  Tom’s present employment was with the Larned State Hospital as a transport officer.  He was a Veteran of the Navy and held memberships at the VFW in Hoisington, American Legion and the Legion Riders of Great Bend, the Patriot Guard and Bikers of Central Kansas (BOCK).  He had a love for motorcycles and especially spending time with his family.  He and his wife were Mr. and Mrs. Claus for the Men’s Motorcycle Club Toy Run, for the past 40 years and passed out ornaments to surrounding hospitals for BOCK.

Survivors include, his wife, Marie of the home; son Tommy and wife Kristi Drewel of Great Bend; daughter, Anneda and husband Shawn Mossberg of Great Bend; two sisters, Carol Miller of Union, Missouri and Arlene Miller of Franklin, Missouri and four grandchildren, Chris Julian and significant other, Bailie Scheuerman, Melissa Julian and significant other Dustin Stiles, MacKenzie and Madison Drewel, all of Great Bend.  He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tammy Drewel and sister, Jo Jo Heidbrink.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday, July 20, 2018 at Bryant Funeral Home, with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.  Funeral Service will be held at Bryant Funeral Home on Saturday, July 21, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Dick Ogle presiding.  Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to the American Legion of Great Bend, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Kathleen E. Moses

Kathleen E. Moses, age 70 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away at her home in Great Bend on Saturday, morning, July 7, 2018 after a prolonged illness. Kathleen was born on September 12, 1947 at Vicksburg, Mississippi to Luther and Opel (Jones) Ellison and moved with her family at an early age to the North Augusta, South Carolina area. After graduating from High School, she went on to graduate from Nursing School in Atlanta, Georgia where she worked as a Registered Nurse in various healthcare settings. Kathleen also attained a degree in Psychology from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. She was united in marriage to Earl C. Moses III on October 14, 1978 in Atlanta, Georgia. Earl and Kathleen were recruited by the Mid-Kansas Economic Commission to return to Great Bend, Kansas (Earl’s hometown) in June of 1995 to build affordable housing. Some years later Earl and Kathleen formed the rental business, Moses Properties LLC in Great Bend. Kathleen was an avid reader, and also a published author of poems and short stories. Her biggest hobby by far was people – Kathleen loved people. A very giving person, she with the help of her husband Earl formed Genesis Ministry while in Atlanta, Georgia, offering help and guidance to those who had suffered catastrophic losses in their personal lives.

Survivors include her husband, Earl C. Moses III of Great Bend, Kansas; one son, Benjamin Earl Moses of Great Bend, Kansas; three daughters: Becky Joy Stanborough of St. Augustine, Florida, Rebekah Lynn Moses of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Rachel Anna (and her husband, Spencer Weatherholt) Moses of Hanover, New Hampshire; four grandchildren: Abigail and Jake Stanborough, Emmalynn Jo Moses, and Margaret Kathleen Moses-Weatherholt; one brother, James L. (and his wife, Cheryl) Ellison of Columbia, South Carolina; and two sisters: Julia (and her husband, Phillip) Jones of Hilton Head, South Carolina and Carolyn (and her husband, Ronnie) Gunter of Salley, South Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Ronald Eugene Ellison.

Cremation has been chosen. There will be no viewing or services at this time. The family has requested that memorials be directed to a charity of the donor’s choice. Mark A. Helm

Mark A. Helm, age 64 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away on Sunday evening, July 15, 2018 at Great Bend Regional Hospital in Great Bend after a sudden illness. Mark was born on October 14, 1953 at Hays, Kansas to Carl F. and Melba J. (Meyers) Helm. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years. Mark was united in marriage to his wife Sheila on June 2, 1990 at Great Bend. A Great Bend resident for the majority of his life, he worked for Sunflower Electric Power Corporation and predecessor companies for over thirty years in various positions prior to his retirement four years ago as Executive Manager of Transmission.

Mark is survived by his wife, Sheila Helm of Great Bend, Kansas; one son, Joshua (and his wife, Stacia) Helm of Wichita, Kansas; two daughters: Rachel (and her husband, Jordan) Shorter of Solomon, Kansas and Sara (and her husband, Brian) Potter of Somersworth, New Hampshire; eight grandchildren: Tayci Helm, Joshua (and his wife, Jessica) Helm, Jonathan Helm, Tanner Helm, Isabelle Shorter, Hannah Shorter, Jaxon Potter and Brooks Potter; two great-grandchildren: Maryha Helm and Maddalynn Helm; one brother, Carl (and his wife, Connie) Helm of Great Bend, Kansas and one step-brother, Ralph (and his wife, Diana) Sunley of Great Bend, Kansas; two sisters: Claudia Arnold of Salina, Kansas and Anne (and her husband, Brent) Butler of Warrensburg, Missouri. Mark was preceded in death by his parents, a stepfather Marion Sunley, a daughter Terra Helm, and a sister Lila Girton.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, July 20, 2018 at Charter Funerals in Great Bend, Kansas with Pastor Leroy Keith officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery north of Great Bend, Kansas. Doris Lucille Boxberger

Dateline: Hoisington, Kansas 

Doris Lucille Boxberger, 90, died July 14, 2018, at Almost Home, Great Bend.  She was born November 15, 1927, on the farm near Galatia, Kansas, the daughter of Jacob and Gertrude (Schwein) DeWald.  Doris was a 1945 graduate of Russell High School.

On October 24, 1948, she married Herbert “Herb” Boxberger at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Hoisington where she was currently still a member.

Doris made her home in Hoisington for 73 years with Herb. They had two children, Deborah and Doug. Herb preceded her in death on January 25, 2001 and later her daughter, Deborah in 2008.  She was also preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Gertrude DeWald, a brother, Vernon DeWald, and her angel great grandson, Maxton Foster Burkey.

Survivors include: son, Douglas Boxberger and wife Della of Hoisington; five grandchildren, Keith Reif and wife London of Hoisington, and their children, Bradley, Brooke, Brady, and Brennley, Terry Reif and wife Anita of Hoisington and their children, Mallory and Gabrielle, Kelci Burkey and husband Kevin of Hoisington and their children, Kamben, Boston and Ruxon, Bryan Boxberger and wife Ashley of Stafford and their son Lane, and Bryce Boxberger and wife Abigayle of Hoisington; and a brother, James DeWald and wife Georgetta of rural Galatia.

Friends may call 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Prayer service will start at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, 2018, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church with the Reverend Wayne Baldyga presiding. Burial will follow in Hoisington Cemetery.

Bernice Moore

Dateline: Hoisington, Kansas

HOISINGTON – Bernice Moore, 92, known as “Gram Bee” to her own grandchildren as well as to her Roosevelt kindergarten classes, passed away on July 13, 2018, at Country Place Living, Hoisington.  She was born October 4, 1925, in Carnegie, Okla., to Elbert and Bernice (Wells) Mitchell.

Bee attended Southwestern Institute of Technology, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a degree in education.  It was there she met the love of her life of 49 years, Robert “Bob” Moore, M.D.  They were married August 12, 1946, at Arapaho, Okla.  Bob passed away on December 31, 1995.  Bee helped put Bob through school working as a medical secretary in the coroner’s office in Oklahoma City.

Bee and Doc moved to Hoisington in 1954 after completing his medical internship.  She spent her life as a wife, mother and secretary in his practice.  Bee was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, PEO, VFW Auxiliary, Tri-N and 4-Aces Bridge Clubs, the Clara Barton Hospital Auxiliary, and a volunteer reader to the kindergarteners at Roosevelt School.

Bee is survived by her daughter, Anne Martin, D.V.M., and her husband John of Hoisington; brother, Bob Mitchell and his wife Margaret of Whitney, Tex.; and two sons-in-law, Walter “Mac” Gibbs of Weimer, Tex. and Michael “Mike” Dickinson of Oklahoma City; six grandchildren, Kristan Martin and fiancé Daniel, Tracy Williams and husband Cody, John Robert Martin, Brennan Gibbs, Christian Gibbs and Michael Dickinson; and one great grandchild, Finley Williams.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; two daughters, Maureen Gibbs and Martha Dickinson; three brothers, Charles Mitchell, Jack Mitchell and Don Mitchell; and by one sister Anne Novotny.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2018, at Concordia Lutheran Church, Hoisington, with The Reverend Gary Wolf presiding.  Interment will follow at Hoisington Cemetery, Hoisington.  Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 17, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.  Memorials have been designated to Robert Moore, M.D. Scholarship Fund, in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, PO Box 146, Hoisington, KS 67544.

Evelene Marie Knox

GREAT BEND — Evelene Marie Knox, 86, died Aug. 27, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. She was born Jan. 2, 1931, at the family home in Pawnee County, the daughter of Edward C. and Marie R. (Krmela) Horyna. She attended Great Bend public schools. She married Ramon Leroy Knox Aug. 2, 1953, at Great Bend.  He died March 6, 2006. A lifetime area resident, Mrs. Knox was a homemaker and cook in Great Bend and Albert.

She was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, past President of the Eagle’s Auxiliary #646, and was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary #3111, all of Great Bend. She enjoyed being with family and friends and also volunteering.

Survivors include two sons, Brian L. Knox of Guam, and Wesley A. Knox of Great Bend; one brother, Edwin L. Horyna of Lyons; five sisters, Rose Casper of Irving, Texas, Carol Huffman of Great Bend, Betty Hafenstine of La Crosse, Connie Allen of McPherson, and Lois Cox of South Hutchinson; two grandchildren, Nathaniel Knox and his wife Jennifer of Las Vegas, NV, and Kelvin Knox and his wife Elizabeth of Norwich, Conn.; and four great-grandchildren, Austin, Lucas, Evelyn and Rebecca. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Kenneth Horyna, Clarence E. Horyna and Donald L. Horyna, and one sister, Sylvia Horyna.

Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, with Rev. Adam Wutka presiding.  Burial will follow at the Golden Belt Memorial Park, Great Bend.  Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Jeanette Aliene Lewellen

Dateline: Hoisington, Kansas 

On August 10, 1933, Jeanette Aliene Lewellen was born to Clara Stipes and Roy C. Lewellen in Hoisington, Kansas. She passed away on July 8, 2018, in Willow Park, Texas after a year of convalescing from different illnesses.

After high school she married Robert Reed Shirer and together they had two children.  She was preceded in death by her mother and father, her brother, Jimmy Lee Lewellen, her stepfather, James Welch Cass, her stepbrother, J.W. Cass, Jr., her husband Robert, and son, David Reed.

Living relatives include her daughter, Rhonda K. Watson, son-in-law John C. Watson, and granddaughter, Laura K. Watson.  Also her stepsister, Mary Helen Cass Munk and nephew Jason, brother-in-law, Warren Shirer, niece Kayla Shirer Griffen and family, nephew Brad Shirer and wife Sarah, and numerous cousins.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hoisington, Kansas.  She was president of Business and Professional Women’s Organization, president of the United Methodist Women’s Group, and had been a Sunday School teacher, Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader, member of First United Methodist Church Choir, and trustee of First United Methodist Church of Hoisington. Also Order of the Eastern Star, Hoisington, from which she received her 50 year membership pin. She also served her community as an elected county commissioner of Barton County, Kansas from 1976 to 1988.

She loved her friends, church, and country, serving others, playing bridge and any candy with caramel in it, especially Milky Ways.

Memorial service will be 11:30 a.m., Saturday, July 14, 2018, at First United Methodist Church, 467 W 3rd, Hoisington, Kansas.  There will be a fried chicken dinner following and all are invited. Private family graveside will be in Hoisington Cemetery.

Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Dorothy M. Campbell

GREAT BEND – Dorothy M. Campbell, 100, passed away July 7, 2018, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend.  She was born November 7, 1917, at Emporia, to Clarence and Lizzie (Schallehn) Whitaker. Dorothy married Harold “Bud” Campbell August 14, 1948, at Kansas City, Kan.  He died August 17, 2009.

A long-time resident of Great Bend, coming from Emporia, Americus and Newton, Dorothy was an elementary school teacher in Great Bend, Lyon County and Emporia.  Her passion and love for teaching was demonstrated for a total of thirty-eight years. Dorothy graduated from Emporia High School and received a BS degree in Education from Emporia State University. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, NEA, KNEA, Barton County Retired Teachers and Northwest FCE.

Dorothy was preceded in death by husband, Harold “Bud” Campbell; two sons, Todd and Brad; brother, Alvin Whitaker; and sister, Blanche Key.

Graveside services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at Great Bend Cemetery, with The Reverend Jon Brudvig presiding.  Memorials are suggested to the Dorothy Campbell Memorial Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
