Rebecca Sue Booth

LARNED – Rebecca Sue Booth, 54, passed away July 5, 2018, at Hays Medical Center. She was born on July 10, 1963, in Hoisington to Harry and Esther (Howell) Martin.

Rebecca was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church.  She had a love for coloring, butterflies and plants, but she especially loved to hear the cardinals sing.

Survivors include, daughters, Amanda and Nathan Degenhardt of Great Bend, Tiffany Heape of Ellinwood, Hannah Contras of Great Bend and Allie Johnson of Wichita; sons, Alex Contras of Great Bend and William from Iowa; brothers, Mike and Nancy Martin of Pratt, Doug and Janice Martin of Larned, Kevin and Laura Martin of Hoisington and Gary Martin of Great Bend; sisters, Cynthia Martin of Great Bend, Debbie Lebbin of Manhattan and Jeanie and LeRoy Donovan of Hoisington; and eight grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a son, Ryan Booth and sister, Martha Knight.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at 2:00 p.m., with Pastor Dwight Dozier presiding.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Rebecca Sue Booth Funeral Expense Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Vester G. “Buck” Beckham

PENDING FUNERAL NOTICE

 GREAT BEND – Vester G. “Buck” Beckham, 64, passed away July 1, 2018 at Hays Medical Center, Hays.  He was born on August 4, 1953, to Guymon D. and Julia (Daniel) Beckham in Lindsborg.  He married Dixie Gustus on March 8, 1974 in Greensburg, she survives.

Patricia Arlone (Krinhop) Carlson

GREAT BEND – Patricia Arlone (Krinhop) Carlson, 85, of Great Bend, formerly of Chapman, passed away July 3, 2018, in Hays, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on Friday, March 17, 1933, in Junction City, to Elmer and Hazel Krinhop.

She proudly graduated from Dickinson County Community High School in Chapman, in 1951. She married Duane Lloyd Carlson on September 18, 1960, at the Lutheran church in Chapman. They worked and had fun bowling in Manhattan, before moving to Great Bend. Her first job in Great Bend was with the city as an office assistant. She quickly moved to work as a secretary for NCRA before retiring.

She is survived by her husband; two sons, Mark and Laurie Carlson of Overland Park and Michael and Susan Carlson of Great Bend; four granddaughters Shanna, Alexandra, Nicole, and Jordan; brother, DeWain Krinhop of Chapman and sister, Karyn Ashburn of Salina. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, and brothers, Kenneth and Harvey.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, July 6, 2018, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m.  Services will be held at Bryant Funeral Home on Saturday, July 7, 2018, at 11 a.m.  Graveside services will follow at 3 p.m., Saturday, July 7, 2018, at Indian Hills Cemetery in Chapman. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorials to be designated to the Golden Belt Humane Society, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Phyllis June McCulley

GREAT BEND – Phyllis June McCulley, 87, passed away June 30, 2018, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend.  She was born April 2, 1931, in Ness County, to Gaston and Rosie (Ross) Young. She married James William McCulley, June 18, 1950 at Ness City, Kansas.

Coming from Ness City to Great Bend in 1960, Phyllis was a homemaker who loved the Lord and shared Jesus with everyone.  She was a member of Central Baptist Church and attended Grace Community Church.  She was a Sunday School teacher and held memberships in the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and White Cross Missions. She sang in the church choir and was active in the Central Baptist Clothing Bank.  Phyllis also had a love for exercise, playing bridge, camping, traveling and the Girl Scouts.

Survivors include, her husband, James W. McCulley, of the home; sons, Kelly McCulley of Hudson and Karl McCulley and wife Brenda of Great Bend; daughters, Kathy Tacha and Max Mizer of Jennings and Karen Stewart and husband Clay of Great Bend; sister, Joyce Kraft of Lakewood, Colorado; six grandchildren, Korey and Kiefer McCulley, Kayla May, Miranda Shoemaker, Keegan and Grace McCulley and one great-granddaughter, Alara McCulley.   She was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Krug.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 6, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Jay Beuoy presiding.  Interment will be at the Ness City Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, July 5, 2018, with family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Bryant Funeral Home. Kathryn L. Miller

Kathryn L. Miller, 90, a lifelong resident of the Bison, Kansas, area died June 28, 2018, in Wichita after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Kathryn was born in Otis, Kansas, to Fred, Sr., and Agnes (Funk) Jones at the family farm on March 10, 1928, where she was raised with her siblings. After attending college, Kathryn became a one-room schoolhouse teacher for 1st-8th grade students, teaching for 13 years. A devoted farmer’s wife, Kathryn helped run the farm for decades before moving on to other ventures. Kathryn’s later pursuits included tax preparation, helping run Miller Custom Homes, managing the local Texaco gas station, and working as a real estate broker. She also enjoyed travelling in later years to destinations varying from Cozumel, Mexico, to Alaska. She was renowned for her delicious cooking and her brilliance as a grandmother.

Kathryn married Virgel Miller on May 23, 1953. He preceded her in death in July 2016 after 63 years of marriage.

Survivors include three daughters: Kay Boyd (Austin) of Wichita; Renee Nicholson (Leonard) of Hoisington; and Teresa Miller of Wichita; six grandchildren: Melissa Baier of Wichita; Kelsey Beckman of Wichita; Josh Nicholson (Melissa) of Hoisington; Jeremy Baier (Jenna) of Bloomington, IL; Derek Nicholson (Brittni) of Hoisington; and Cameron Beckman (Shannon) of Wichita; and five great-grandchildren: Azalea and Jersey Baier; Abel Nicholson; Presley Beckman and another one on the way. She is also survived by a sister, Nila Hartman, of Fort Collins, Colorado; sister-in-law, Maureen Jones, of Dodge City; and many much loved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Fred Jones, Jr.; and brother-in-law, Nelson Hartman.

A viewing will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 1, 2018, with the family receiving visitors from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse.

A viewing will also be held from 1:00-1:50 p.m. on Monday, July 2, 2018, with a celebration of life beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Janousek Funeral Home. Interment will follow at La Crosse Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Walnut Valley Senior Center or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Gwendolyn Lu Brown

GREAT BEND – Gwendolyn Lu Brown, 71, passed away at her home on June 23, 2018.  She was born July 15, 1946, in Strong City to Edward and Martha (Walker) Maddox.  She married Ellis Eugene Brown.

A Great Bend resident since 2015, coming from Hoisington, Gwendolyn worked in healthcare, as a phlebotomist at CKMC, an x-ray tech at Clara Barton Hospital and a nurse aide for Great Bend Home Health.  She loved to crochet, knit and sew.

Survivors include, two sons, Milton Pete Brown of Hoisington and Michael Brown of Great Bend; one daughter, Tammy Brown of Great Bend; a niece, Leigh Ann Swigart; and a special family friend, Nancy Winkelman of Great Bend.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Martha Maddox; two brothers, Dennis and Edward Maddox and half sister, Alice Calhoun.

Memorial Services will be at Bryant Funeral Home on Friday, July 6, 2018 at 1:00 p.m., with Rev. Dick Ogle presiding. Inurnment will be at the Hoisington Cemetery.

Sue Ellen Lindsay

PAOLA – Sue Ellen Lindsay, 64, passed away at her home in Paola.  She was born on April 2, 1954 in Hoisington.  Sue was lucky to have two loving parents, Lester L. and Dolores (Brewer) Lindsay.

Sue was baptised a Christian and was active in the church as she grew up.  She was a member of the pep club, Girl Scouts, 4-H, and held many other club memberships. She graduated from Hoisington High School and later received her LPN (nursing) degree.  She worked most of her life as a caregiver.  Later in life, she went back to school and received her social work degree at Fort Hays State University.  She worked with the mental health field until she retired.  Sue loved children, and kids in general, having special relationships with all her family members.  She loved to spend time with her nieces and nephews, but especially loved spending time with her grandsons and hearing them call her Nana.

Survivors include, one daughter, Amy Schmidt and husband Patrick of Basehor; two sisters, Pam and husband Kenny Bonham of Larned and Debbie Lindsay of Mesquite, Texas and a sister-in-law, Lisa Crist of Olmitz; two grandsons, Collin and Liam Schmidt; nieces, Andrea Amador, Hailee and Gracie Bonham  and Shauna (Bonham) Karpe and nephews, Tyler Bonham and Dominic and Austin Manley.    She was preceded in death by her parents, Lester L. and Dolores (Brewer) Lindsay, and a brother, Lester A. Lindsay.

Friends may call at the Funeral Home 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, July 2, 2018, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. to receive friends. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2018, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home with Shelly Klingensmith officiating.  Inurnment will follow at the Hoisington Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to the Sue Lindsay Funeral Expense Fund, in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.

BRUCE N. FURREY

BRUCE N. FURREY

Bruce N. Furrey, age 71 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, June 26, 2018 at his home in Great Bend after a lengthy illness. Bruce was born on July 14, 1946 at Parsons, Kansas to Fred and Cecelia (Gale) Furrey. He was a lifelong resident of Great Bend, Kansas except for a brief time in Texas and Wichita in his early life. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1962. He married when he returned home and he and his wife had three children. They later divorced. Bruce was united in marriage to Carol Crowley on May 25, 1996 at Great Bend, Kansas. He spent most of his adult life in various positions of the trucking industry, including an over the road truck driver, a safety consultant, and a manager. He also owned Compliance Solutions and Consulting Services from 2006 until he was forced to retire for health reasons. Bruce was totally dedicated to his job, whatever he was doing. He took great pride in his work and was very good at it.

Bruce is survived by his wife, Carol Crowley-Furrey of Great Bend, Kansas; two daughters: Rachell (and her husband JD) Davis of Crete, Nebraska and Lisa Funk of Claflin, Kansas; one step-daughter, Laurie (and her husband, Doug) Linsner of Great Bend, Kansas; three grandsons: Alex (and his wife, Jacque) Armstrong of Hoisington, Kansas, and Luke Martin and Jayden Martin of Wichita, Kansas; three granddaughters: Shaila (and her husband, Tyler) Jones of Great Bend, Kansas and Sierra (and her husband Bradley) McGinnis and Shyanne Davis of Des Moines, Iowa; one step-granddaughter Megan Keener of Great Bend, Kansas; five great-grandsons and three great-granddaughters; four sisters: Darlene Jones, Lisa (and her husband, Herb) Phillips, Phyllis McCormick, and Bonnie Furrey, all of Great Bend, Kansas; two brothers: Mike Furrey of Great Bend, Kansas and Doug Furrey of Longview, Washington.

Bruce was preceded in death by his parents; a baby sister Gayle Ann Furrey, two brothers-in-law Jerry McCormick and George Crone, a granddaughter Shelby Davis, and a son Bruce N. Furrey, Jr. in 2016.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Bruce’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at Charter Funerals in Great Bend, Kansas with Pastor Larry J. Schumacher officiating. According to Bruce’s wishes, cremation has been chosen. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in care of Sunflower Diversified Services of Great Bend, Kansas or the American Cancer Society. Betty J. Edman

GREAT BEND – Betty J. Edman, 91, passed away on June 26, 2018, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend.  She was born on April 10, 1927, in Emporia, to Leonard and Bernice (McEnterfer) Stafford.  She married Maurice Doolen “Dooley” Edman on February 27, 1954, in Clayton, New Mexico.  He passed away on March 29, 2011.

Coming from McPherson in 1956, Betty worked as a secretary, bookkeeper, legal aide and nurse, for several years in Great Bend.  She held long term employment with Halliburton Oil Well Cementing Company and Marlette Homes, Inc. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Jobs Daughters, the Oil Secretaries Association, Desk and Derrick, Secretaries Club and Beta Sigma Phi.  Betty loved the outdoors, enjoyed having lots of flowers and had many different hobbies.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursday, June 28, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home.  Graveside Service and burial will be at the Great Bend Cemetery on Thursday, June 28. 2018 at 3 p.m., with Pastor Larry Schumacher presiding.  Memorials are suggested to the First Congregational United Church of Christ, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Harold Joseph Schmidt

GREAT BEND – Harold Joseph Schmidt, passed away on June 25, 2018, at the age of 93, while at Via Christi Village, Hays.  Born in Catherine, Kansas on June 15, 1925, to John and Anna (Schuetz) Schmidt.  He married Elenora Monica Pfeifer in Liebenthal, Kansas on August 23, 1948. They started their married life in Hays and then moved to Great Bend.

He worked in the oil field business and for Mid-Continent L.P. Service, which then took them to Pratt, for several years, until they finally settled back in Great Bend in 1967 where they retired together. After more than 45 years of service as a transport-driver and bob-tail driver delivering L.P. gas to the surrounding counties residents and farms, he still continued working part time until the age of 76. During all this time he developed relationships and made friends with his customers.

Harold also devoted his life to the Catholic Church as a lay minister for the Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Church, he was a Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus. He was especially dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary; as a member of The Blue Army he gave presentations over the air, spreading the word and understanding of Our Lady of Fatima and the miracles Our Lady of Lourdes.

Survivors include one son and daughter: Richard Harold Schmidt and wife Kathy, Hays, and Aileen Frances Bailey and husband Kevin, Leavenworth; one sister, Laurita (Schmidt) Karlin, Hays; five grandchildren: David and wife Regina Schmidt of Lake Ozark, Missouri, Kendall Lang and wife Michelle of Great Bend, Michael Schmidt and wife Julie of Aurora, Colorado, Stephanie (Lang) and husband T.J. Herzog of Liberty, Missouri, and Brandy (Schmidt) and husband Bret Jackson of Denton, Texas; nine great-grandchildren: Sheldon Schmidt, Harrison Jackson, Garrett Schmidt, Brandon Jackson, Landon Schmidt, Madison Jackson, Kennedy Schmidt, Mikalya Lang, and Monica Lang.

Harold was preceded in death by his wife Elenora Monica (Pfeifer) Schmidt; one daughter, Janice Marie (Schmidt) Lang; nine siblings, his brothers and sisters, Norbert, Edgar, William, Francis and Robert and Alexia Sander; his half-sisters Angela (Rohr), Clara and Florine Froelich; as well as, one great-grandson, Zachary Lang.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m., Friday, June 29, 2018, with vigil service at 7 p.m., at Bryant Funeral Home.  Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 30, 2018 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church with Father Don Bedore presiding.  Interment to follow at the Great Bend Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to the Prince of Peace Parish, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
