Michael Paul Cox

Michael Paul Cox, age 24 years, of Bushton, Kansas passed away on Monday afternoon, June 25, 2018 at Via Christi Hospital St. Francis in Wichita, Kansas after a brief illness. Michael was born on October 18, 1993 at Grand Junction, Colorado to Richard Haubach and Tina Cox, and moved to Kansas in 1996. He graduated from Central Plains High School in Claflin, Kansas in 2012, and was formerly employed at Sunflower Diversified Services in Great Bend, Kansas and Casey’s General Store in Ellsworth, Kansas until declining health prevented him from working. He was united in marriage to Bridgette Oberle on March 24, 2017 at Lyons, Kansas. Michael loved all sports, and loved playing Magic Cards with neighbors and friends. Most of all, Michael really enjoyed spending time with family.

Survivors include his wife, Bridgette Oberle Cox of Ellsworth, Kansas; one son, William Cox of Bushton, Kansas; one step-daughter Saleena Justice of Salina, Kansas; his parents Tom and Tina (Cox) Smolik of Bushton, Kansas; one brother, Mason Cox of Bushton, Kansas; two sisters, Nichole Smolik (and her significant other Travis Horner) of Oxford, North Carolina and Heather (and her husband Anthony) Ramirez of Great Bend, Kansas; two sisters-in-law, Aubrey and Rory Oberle of Bushton, Kansas; his parents-in-law Roy and Melissa Oberle of Bushton, Kansas; his paternal grandmother, Doris Smolik of Great Bend, Kansas; several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Michael was preceded in death by one brother, Chris Smolik in 2011; his grandparents: William Cox, Jr. in 2011, Matthew Smolik in 2014, and Glenda Culver in 2017; a cousin, Catherine Shearer in 1991.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, June 29, 2018 at Charter Funerals in Great Bend, Kansas with Andrew Hoelscher officiating. Cremation will follow. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday, June 28 at Charter Funerals in Great Bend, Kansas. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation. Gregory Scott Klusener

WICHITA – Gregory Scott Klusener, 50, passed away on June 19, 2018 in Wichita.  He was born on April 6, 1968 at Hutchinson, to Larry E. & Patricia F. (Petron) Klusener.  He married Jonie Moorhouse on August 24, 2007 in Wichita, she survives.

He was raised in the Catholic faith, loved to play guitar, restore old cars and was always the funny guy in the room.  He worked for Nationwide as an insurance adjuster, but his real passion was fixing and working on anything mechanical, especially old cars.

Survivors include, parents, Larry E. and Patricia F. Klusener of Great Bend; wife, Jonie Klusener of the home; children, Jacob D. Byrne, Emily K. and Macie L. Klusener of the home; and sister, Julie A. and husband Jeremy Staab of Lawrence.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, June 25, 2018 at 10 a.m., at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Don Bedore presiding.  Visitation will be held Sunday, June 24, 2018, from 1 to 9 p.m., with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Bryant Funeral Home.  Interment will be at the Great Bend Cemetery.

Carl D. Eddingfield

PRATT – Carl D. Eddingfield, Jr., 87, passed away on June 21, 2018 at Parkwood Village in Pratt.  He was born on October 10, 1930 to Carl David and Mary Pearl (Williams) Eddingfield, Sr.  He married Sylvia Irene Fischer on February 14, 1997 in Great Bend.  

A lifetime resident of Great Bend, Carl was a retired postal carrier for the United States Postal Service.  He was an avid gardener and enjoyed cutting fire wood.  Keeping with Carl’s wishes, family requests that everybody dress casual.

Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Eddingfield of the home; nieces, Brenda and husband Rex Johnston of Pratt, Judy and husband Tom Wolf of Cedar Park, Texas, and Nancy and husband Morris Kirschberg of San Antonio, Texas; nephews, Mike Munz of Hudson, Pat and spouse Mark Kahabka-Munz of Wichita, Robert and Jenny Glynn of Great Bend, Donnie Glynn of Hudson; several great nieces and nephews and several great-great nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by two sisters and a nephew.

Funeral Services will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 26, 2018 with Mike Munz presiding.  Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m., Monday, June 25, 2018, both at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend.  Interment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery.  Family requests in lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Golden Belt Humane Society or the Pratt Health Foundation, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Ray E. Tiede

GREAT BEND – Ray E. Tiede, 84, passed away on June 19, 2018 at Woodhaven Care Center.  He was born August 22, 1933 in Stone County, Missouri to Ernest John and Ruby Jeanette (Branstetter) Tiede.  He married Ersell Louise Skinner in September 1952 at Great Bend.

Coming from Missouri in 1950, Ray was a power line foreman for Western Power and Centel Electric and mechanic for Great Bend Feeding and BJ Service.    He was of the Christian faith.  Ray enjoyed fishing and hunting and liked to create things.

Survivors include, his wife, Ersell of the home; sons, Kenneth Ray (Andra) Tiede of Rock Springs, Wyoming and Kelly Eugene (Donine) Tiede of Branson, Missouri; daughters, Kathryn Jean (Max) King and Kimberly Ann (Phil) Grossardt of Great Bend and Karen Louise (David) Jones of St. Mary’s; brothers, Harold, Wallace and James Tiede, all of Great Bend; sisters, Helen Tiede of Warsaw, Missouri, Jeanette Cribbs of Roswell, New Mexico and half-sister, Ernestine Butler of Republic, Missouri; and ten grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren, as well as several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by two half-brothers, Leo J. and Richard E. Tiede.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 25, 2018 at 11 a.m., at Bryant Funeral Home, with Pastor Jack Sweany presiding.  Friends may call on Sunday, June 24, 2018 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., with family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Inurnment will be at the Great Bend Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to the American Kidney Foundation, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Janet S. Schwamborn

Janet S. Schwamborn, 62, passed away June 14, 2018, at her home in Great Bend.  She was born in Great Bend, September 29, 1955, to Donald A. and Nadine (Moore) Dreiling.
Janet married Ken Schwamborn on July 22, 1978, at Great Bend.  He survives.  Janet, a lifetime resident of Great Bend, was a licensed dental hygienist, serving the community for 39 years.  She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose and the Altar Society.  Janet was an avid sports fan, especially of the KU Jayhawks, New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals.  She enjoyed entertaining friends and family, Coors Light, cooking, and above all, Janet treasured her time with her grandsons.

Survivors include her husband, Ken Schwamborn, of the home; one son, Ryan Schwamborn and wife Crystal of Great Bend; one sister, Sheryl Schamaun and husband Steve of Great Bend; one brother, Don E. Dreiling of Great Bend; and two grandsons, Jackson and Connor Schwamborn.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 18, 2018, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend, with Father Ted Stoecklein officiating.  Interment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery North, Great Bend.  Visitation will be from 1:00 to 8:30 p.m., Sunday, June 17, 2018, with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home. Jose Luis Chavez

Jose Luis Chavez, 60, passed away Sunday, June 10, 2018, in Wichita. He was born in Durango, Mexico September 26, 1957, to Concepcion Cabrales. He married Emma Rocha on February 12, 2013 in Great Bend.  She survives.

Jose, a resident of Great Bend for 33 years, has worked as a welder for Guthrie Trailers and Duke Drilling for many years.  He loved to go fishing and was a great husband, father and grandfather to all his children and grandchildren.  He had many friends and treated them all with kindness.

Survivors include, wife, Emma; one son, Fabio Chavez; three daughters, Anais, Lucero and Gisela Chavez; eleven grandchildren, Silas and Xanthus Brownlee, Gaby Dominguez, Alex, Roxanna and Carlos Alonso, Fabio, Mea and Nova Chavez, and Gailiea and Alexia Chavez; and two brothers, Daniel Duarte and Jorge Cabrales.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Teodoro Juarez and a sister, Blanca Cabrales. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12 p.m., Saturday, June 16, 2018, at  St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Don Bedore, with burial to follow the service at the Great Bend Cemetery.  Visitation is from 1 to 9 p.m., Friday, June 15, 2018, with a vigil at 7 p.m., at Bryant Funeral Home. Gerald Nicholas Kaiser

GREAT BEND – Gerald Nicholas Kaiser, 80, died on June 11, 2018 at Cherry Village Nursing Home.  He was born on August 4, 1937, at Claflin, to Walter and Anna (Heinz) Kaiser.  He was married to Barbara (Popp) Wilhelm Pangburn on February 11, 1994.  She died on March 22, 2010.  He then later married Evelyn M. (Huschka) Reiser on May 4, 2013 at Great Bend.  She survives.

A long time Great Bend resident, Gerald came from the Beaver and Hoisington area in 1965. Starting at a very young age, Gerald worked in the oil field as a roustabout, pumper, and roughneck.  He later drove truck, hauling equipment, for Pickrell Drilling Co. and Allen Drilling Co., then was employed as an over the road truck driver for Jack B. Kelley, retiring in 2003.  After retirement, Gerald drove truck for Mid Continent L.P. Service.  He was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish and the Knights of Columbus Council 862.

Survivors include, wife, Evelyn Reiser-Kaiser of the home; son, Todd Kaiser, of Great Bend; daughters Kim (Joe) Geelan of Olathe and Shelli Kaiser of Salina; brother, Jack Kaiser of Preston; sister, Mary Lou Ehrlich of Colorado Springs, Colorado; one grandchild, Zachary Horyna; Evelyn’s children, David (Tricia) Reiser, Richard (LaVonne) Reiser, Debbie (Roger) Converse, Cheryl (Steve) Schaub, her nine grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by two brothers, Royce and Melvin Kaiser; and a sister, Carmen Kaiser.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Friday, June 15, 2018, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Don Bedore presiding.  Interment will be at Claflin Cemetery, Claflin.  Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, June 14, 2018, with a Vigil and Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7 p.m., at Bryant Funeral Home. Joyce Hillman

Joyce Hillman, age 79, passed away at Cherry Village Benevolence on June 11, 2018. She was born in Garfield, Kansas on August 29th, 1938. She was the daughter of Gilbert W. Guthrie Sr. and Edith E. Evans Guthrie. She married Homer Hillman October 12, 1957 in Larned, Kansas. He died May 17, 1982. Joyce then married F. Herman Kraft of Ransom in June of 1984. He died January 23, 2007.

Joyce worked at a wide variety of jobs over her lifetime, including working at Riley Elementary School as playground and lunchroom supervisor, then at the warehouse for the Bailey and Orschelen stores. She retired from Russell Regional Hospital at the age of 70. She enjoyed playing bingo, fishing and watching her grandchildren’s sporting events.  She loved to cook and was at her happiest to cook a big meal for family and friends. Her fried chicken was appreciated by many.

She is survived by one son, Bill Hillman (Donna) of Aurora, Missouri, two daughters, Edith McQuade (Owen) of Russell, and Alta Herman (Tom) of Stevensville, Montana.  Four stepsons, Lon Kraft (Sharon) of Bennett, Colorado, Rick Kraft (Vona), Brent Kraft (Bev), all of Ransom, and Jody Kraft (Ladonna) of Plains, Kansas. Grandchildren, Eric McQuade, Jeff McQuade, Elizabeth McQuade, Garrett Hillman (Danielle Lock), Devin Hillman (Allison), Kierstyn Hillman, Natashia Parker  and Nicole Whitney. Step grandchildren, Tim Kraft (Denise), Floyd Kraft, Joey Kraft, Dustin Kraft (Sandy), Lucas Kjellberg, Misty Flax (Aaron), Tiffany McDonald (Joey), Tammy Wolfley (Chris), Amanda Brown (Jerry), Amber Zimmerman (Cody), Becky Venters (Connor), Chelsey Shapland (Justin). 8 Great grandchildren. And 25 step great grandchildren. Sister, Gwendolyn (Edward “Cap”) Bunyard of Rose Hill. Joyce was preceded in death by four brothers, Oren Guthrie, G. Wayne Guthrie Jr, James Guthrie, and Richard Guthrie; a step daughter, Wendi Kjellberg; a grandson, James McQuade, and a great grandson, Nathaniel McQuade.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 14th, and Visitation 1 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, June 13th, with family present from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., both at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Great Bend Girl Scouts.

 

Carlos Lee “Bud” Asher

Dateline: Troy, Ohio

TROY, OHIO — Carlos Lee “Bud” Asher, 94, passed away April 18, 2018, at his home in Troy, Ohio.  He was born February 7, 1924 at Great Bend, to Frank and Cora (Wardlaw) Asher.

Carl served his country during WWII as a second lieutenant in the Army Medical Corp.  A previous resident of the Great Bend area, most recently residing in Troy, Ohio, Carlos was a retired minister, serving in Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio.  He received his Bachelor Degree in education and Master Degree in theology from the University of Wisconsin.  He was a graduate of the Garret Theological Seminary and was an ordained United Methodist pastor and later a pastor with the United Church of Christ.  In 1976 he obtained his credentials in chemical dependency counseling and served at the Upper Valley Medical Center and Miami County Recovery Council programs.

Learning how to ride horses at a very young age during the Depression years, Carl was a cowboy at heart and rode in the Troy Strawberry Festival, Fourth of July parades and the Wyoming trail ride.  He contributes his long successful life to his steadfast faith in the Lord.

Survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth Asher of Whitewater, Wis.; special niece and daughter-of-the-heart, Maritta “Marty” Schloemer of Great Bend; and many other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Lloyd Asher; and six sisters, Marie Asher, Mildred Tournear, Doris Miller, Ellen Doonan, Ruby Phillips and Esther Moeller.

Graveside services and inurnment will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, June 15, 2018, at Great Bend Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Ft. Riley Honor Guard.  Memorials have been designated to First United Methodist Church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
