Glenn Darrell Peters

GREAT BEND — Glenn Darrell Peters, 91, passed away June 8, 2018, at his home in Great Bend.  He was born February 11, 1927 at Okmulgee, Okla., to Arch and Mame (Amos) Peters.

Darrell served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy.  Darrell married Gwen North in 1947 at Larned.  She passed away in 1981.  He later married Shirley Hatch on April 5, 1991, at Great Bend.  Shirley passed away on May 23, 2011.

A resident of Great Bend since 1942, coming from McPherson, Darrell operated Peters Drilling, Mobile Concrete, and Arkansas Sand and Gravel.  Darrell was a member of ISIS Shrine, American Legion Argonne Post 180, V.F.W. Post 3111, and NRA.  He enjoyed trap shooting and hunting, especially quail.

Survivors include one son, Michael Peters and wife Dana of McPherson; three daughters, Beverly Shackelford and husband Tom of Dallas, Texas, Debbie Elliott and husband Don of Dallas, Texas, Becky Young and husband Ken of Oklahoma City, Okla.; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Services are pending and will be announced at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Kansas Oil and Gas Museum, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Judy Kay Anderson

Dateline: Topeka, Kansas 

TOPEKA – Judy Kay Anderson, 67, died on June 6, 2018 at Rolling Hills Health and Rehab, Topeka, Kansas.  She was born in Great Bend, Kansas, on June 28, 1950, to Floyd Lewis, Jr., and Darlene L. (Stalder) Anderson.

Formerly of Great Bend, Judy worked at the Great Bend Tribune placing ads in the newspaper.  She had a love of working on find-a-word search puzzles, going for walks and working on embroidery.

Survivors include two sisters, Karen Felzien and husband Paul of Topeka and Sheryl Burhenn and husband Russell of Bella Vista, Arkansas; sister-in-law, Joy Anderson of Powder Springs, Georgia; and many beloved nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd Lewis Anderson, Jr. and Darlene L. Stalder Anderson; brother, Floyd Lewis Anderson, III and one niece, Jessica Jean Burhenn.

Graveside Services will be Monday, June 11, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery.  Visitation will be on Monday, June 11, 2018, at 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home.   Memorials are suggested to Rosewood Services or the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Gayle Cargill

GREAT BEND – Gayle Cargill, 101, passed away at Riverbend Assisted Living, Great Bend, on June 7, 2018.  She was born on May 31, 1917 at Washington, Oklahoma to John Thomas and Myrtle Kindness (Johnston) Leachman.

Gayle lived most of her life in the Plainview, Texas area. She was married to P.V. Cargill in 1934. They were blessed with 55 years of marriage before his death in 1989. Gayle moved to Great Bend in 1997 and into Riverbend in 2011.  She is a charter member of Heartland Community Church. Before experiencing visual and health limitations, she lived a very active life, including such things as painting, line dancing, bridge, travel and involvement in her church.

Survivors include daughter, Kay Savage and husband Pastor Roy Savage of Great Bend; she has four grandchildren, Jerry Noel and wife Mary, Cary Savage, Greg Savage and wife Heidi and Krista Ball and husband Mark; nineteen great-grandchildren; and twenty-two great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Paris Vance (P.V.) Cargill; daughter, Shirley Rhinehart; two grandchildren, Ray Noel and Theresa Peterson; and three sisters, Modell Sample, Inez Stovall and Wynona Inman.

Funeral services will be Monday, June 11, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Greg Savage, grandson and other family members presiding at Bryant Funeral Home.  Visitation will be Sunday, June 10, 2018 from 1 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in Plainview, Texas, and will be announced at a later date.  Memorials are suggested to the Riverbend Assisted Living (staff and families), in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Hugo Younker

Dateline: Great Bend, Kansas

GREAT BEND –  Hugo Younker, 86, died on June 7, 2018, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend, Kansas.  He was born in Wallace County, Kansas, on May 18, 1932, to Edward and Anne (Deckant) Younker.  He married Margaret Anne VanEaton, on May 17, 1953, at Oakley, Kansas.

Coming from Logan County, Kansas, Hugo was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose.  He worked as owner/operator of Hugo’s Repair, an oilfield and irrigation equipment company, for over 50 years.

Survivors include wife, Margaret Anne of the home; son, Nicholas Younker and wife Theresa of Ellinwood; daughters, Cynthia Kephart and husband Dennis of Great Bend, Pamela Light of Wichita, Kansas and Kathleen Harlow and husband Pat of Yardley, Pennsylvania; he had nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by an infant sister.

Memorials are suggested to the Parkinson’s Foundation or the Boy’s Home of Great Bend.  Services will be announced at a later date.

Sharon Kay Oberle

Dateline: Ellinwood, Kansas 

ELLINWOOD – Sharon Kay Oberle, 76, passed away June 3, 2018 at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita, Kan.  She was born September 17, 1941 in Barton County, Kan. to Claude and Ruth (Willoughby) Juby.  Sharon married Larry Eugene Oberle March 15, 1959 at Hoisington, Kan.  He died February 4, 2008.

A resident of Ellinwood since 1969, coming from Great Bend, Sharon was a homemaker. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, in Ellinwood, Kansas.  Sharon had a love of bingo and most importantly, spending time with all her grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Ray Oberle and wife Tamy of Geneseo and Jerry Lee Oberle of Ellinwood; three daughters, Cindy Kay Fothergill of Ellinwood, Toni Lynn Hicks and husband Jeff of Ellsworth and Vickie Sue Hoffman of Ellinwood; ten grandchildren, Christopher Lamb, Angela Hahn and husband Stephen, Colt Oberle and wife Julie, Derryc Werner, Ashli Fothergill, Michael Oberle, Megan Region and husband Bryan, Raven Pedigo and husband Kyle, Katlynn Billinger and husband Jordan and Kymberle Jackson and husband Kirk; twelve great-grandchildren; and one brother Gale Juby of Gillette, Wyoming.  She was preceded in death by a brother, Weldon Juby and one sister, Sue Vasquez.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 am, Friday June 8, 2018, at Calvary Baptist Church in Ellinwood, with Clay Boepple presiding. Interment will follow at Lakin-Comanche District Cemetery, Ellinwood, Kan. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m., Thursday, June 7, 2018, with family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m., at Bryant Funeral Home.  Memorials have been suggested to the Sharon Kay Oberle Memorial Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Melvin Nickolis Schartz

Dateline: Great Bend, Kansas

GREAT BEND — Melvin Nickolis Schartz, 88, passed away May 31, 2018, at Leisure Homestead of St. John, St. John, Kan.  He was born November 29, 1929, south of Ellinwood, Kan., to Harry and Mary (Weber) Schartz.  Melvin married Marilyn Dwyer June 1, 1957 at Denver, Col.  She died April 27, 2018.

A longtime Great Bend resident previously living in Ellinwood, Melvin served his country during the Korean War, obtaining the rank of Corporal in the U.S. Army.  He was a long time farmer and stockman, also having a fulfilling career in oil and gas operations and operating an insurance agency.  He served as vice president of Mustang Drilling and Exploration and board member for Farmers Bank and Trust.  Melvin was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 862, Elk’s BPO Lodge 1127, Masonic Lodge #15 AF & AM, KIOGA, V.F.W. Post 3111, and 60 year member of American Legion Argonne Post 180, all of Great Bend.  He was an avid hunter, fisherman, gardener and enjoyed flying, holding his private pilot’s license. 

Survivors include one son, Melvin “Bud” Schartz Jr. and wife Karla of Olathe; three daughters, Amy Mellor and husband Bruce of Great Bend, Paula Lindsay and husband Deron of Grenada, Miss. and Anne Hill and husband Mike of Overland Park; six grandchildren, Michael Schartz, Katherine Schartz, Sarah Zimmerman and husband Nick, Drew Lindsay, Blake Hill and Brooke Hill; three great- grandchildren; and one sister Joan Chisholm of Great Bend.   He was preceded in passing by his wife, Marilyn; and one sister, Norma Garrett.

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 8, 2018, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, with Father Ted Stoecklein. Interment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Ft. Riley Honor Guard. Visitation will be Noon to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, June 7, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home, with a Vigil and Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, memorials have been suggested to the Melvin N. and Marilyn D. Schartz Charitable Foundation or Golden Plains Quilts of Valor, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Robert C. “Bob” Simmons

Dateline: Hoisington, Kansas 

Robert C. “Bob” Simmons, 77, died May 28, 2018, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington.  He was born October 21, 1940, in Great Bend, Kansas, the son of Frank and Anna (Larmer) Simmons.  Bob was a 1958 graduate of Hoisington High School.

A lifetime Barton County resident, living in both Great Bend and Hoisington.  He was a roofer, working for L.R. Parsons that later became Washington Roofing.

Bob was active in the Masonic Lodge #331 AF & AM of Hoisington, the Mt. Nebo York Rite of Great Bend, where he was a Grand High Priest, and the Red Cross Constantine, where he was a grand commander and main officer.  He was a Worthy Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Golden Sheaf Chapter #226 of Hoisington.

On June 18, 1961, he married Doris L. Mitchell at Trinity Baptist Church of Hoisington.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 57 years, Doris L. Simmons of the home; and three children; Doug Simmons and wife Elaine of Great Bend, Donna Julian and husband Tim of Hooker, Oklahoma, Diana Dornberger and husband Paul of Salina; sister, Carolyn Bailey of Hoisington; 6 grandchildren, Elizabeth Alexander and husband Caleb of Columbia, Missouri, Phylleicia Clawson and husband Kody of Ellinwood, John Julian of Boise, Idaho, Chris Krom of Ellis, Kandiesa Rexwinkle of Hoisington, Robert Fortner and wife Felicia of Superior, Wisconsin; and five great grandchildren, Caven, Kaden, Kohen, Aden, and Dane.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Donald Gene and John Stephen Simmons; and a sister, Frances Lee Simmons.

Memorial service will be 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Chapel, with Ron Bailey officiating. Inurnment will follow in Hoisington Cemetery.  Friends may sign the book only as cremation has taken place. Wanita “Sandy” Basgall

Great Bend–Wanita “Sandy” Basgall, 83, passed away Wednesday May 30, 2018, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson. Wanita was born September 8, 1934, at Victoria the daughter of Joe and Adeline (Meis) Sander.

Wanita has been a resident of Great Bend since 1953 coming from Hays. She was united in marriage to Marvin Basgall February 7, 1953, in Hays. He passed away December 30, 2011. She was a homemaker, a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick’s, and the Altar Society. She loved to watch cooking shows, and she was the BEST COOK in the family. Sandy helped her husband in his business. Sandy loved being with her grandkids and great grandkids. She has missed her husband Marvin since he passed away.

Survivors include two daughters Pam Corkins and husband Cliff of Hutchinson, and Shelly Drees of Salina; son Gary Basgall and wife Rhonda of Olathe; brother Francis Sander and wife Bridgett of Jacksonville, Ark; sister Armella Johnson of Lewisburg, WV; five grandchildren Barry (Daphne) Stalcup, Taylor (Katie) Basgall, Emma, Riley and Keenan Drees; four great grandchildren Mason, Kennedi, and Averi Stalcup and Ellie Basgall. She was preceded in death by brothers Al, Gilbert, Wilmer and Melvin Sander and sisters Leona Vonfeldt and Cecelia Dreiling.

Visitation 1-9 p.m. Sunday June 3, 2018 with Altar Society Rosary at 4 p.m., with the vigil at 7 p.m., both at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday June 4, 2018 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

LeeAnne Emmons

LeeAnne Emmons, 67, of Russell, Kansas, died on Wednesday, May 23, 2018, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

LeeAnne was born on November 24, 1950, in Marion, Indiana, the daughter of Leon and Mary Ann (Sparks) Atkerson.  At a young age she moved to the Russell area and graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1969.  She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Alfred E. Emmons on June 26, 1984 in Russell, Kansas.  She worked as a secretary for Francis-Urban Tank Service for many years.  She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Russell.  She enjoyed working with arts and crafts and collecting Noah’s ark items.  Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Surviving family include her husband Alfred E. Emmons of the home, son Kenny L. Cain  wife Melanie of Lucas, Kansas, daughter Amy Hoss and husband Cody of Russell, Kansas and son Robert D. Emmons and companion Kimberly Forest of Russell, Kansas; grandchildren Keven Cain, Kendra Harp and Slayde Hoss and great grandchild Kinsley Harp.  She was preceded in death by her parents.

A memorial service to celebrate LeeAnne’s Life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, May 31, 2018, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas with Pastor Les Rye officiating.  Cremation has been selected by the family and inurnment of the cremains will follow at the Russell City Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at the mortuary with family greeting guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Wednesday evening.  Memorials may be given to Trinity United Methodist Church Nursery or Russell City Play Park and sent in care of the mortuary.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Cheryl Anne Crain

Dateline: Great Bend, Kansas

Cheryl Anne Crain, 64, died May 28, 2018, at her home in Great Bend.  She was born April 25, 1954, in Great Bend, Kansas, the daughter of Raphael Naylor and Faye Lois (Gilmore) Muth. Cheryl attended Great Bend High School and Barton County Community College.

She was a licensed daycare provider taking care of many children over the years in her daycare, Grandma’s Home Daycare.

Cheryl was a member of First Church of the Nazarene, of Great Bend. An avid Bible reader, she was a member of several Bible Study Schools.

Survivors include her four children; April Randa of Hoisington, Heather Hibbs and husband Richard of Peck, Farah Stude and husband Tim of Brewster, and Mitchell Schwartz and wife Kris of Bison; mother, Faye Muth of Great Bend; siblings, Rhonda Nuss and husband Scott of Otis, James Muth and wife Cheryl of Arkansas, Anthony Muth and wife Sandra of Great Bend, Steven Muth and wife Cozetta of Salina, and Lynn Tammen and husband Dave of Albert; 13 grandchildren, Michael, Casey, Teairah, Tommy, Jakob, Raphael, Haylee, Gage, Kirsten, Aiden, Alyssa, Kaden, and Ky; and two great grandchildren, Presley and Dexter.

She was preceded in death by her father, Raphael Muth.

A private family memorial service will take place on June 1, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Chapel. Inurnment will be St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chase, Kansas immediately following the memorial service.
