Maryleen W. Brown

Great Bend – Maryleen W. Brown, 94, passed away March 9, 2018 at her home in rural Great Bend. She was born October 18. 1923 on a farm, 5 mi. east of at Bison, Kansas. Her parents were Claus J. and Marie (Scheureman) Meier. She attended a one-room school in Rush County and graduated from Otis Rural High School in 1941.  She attended college at Fort Hays State and taught in a one-room school near Albert, KS.

She married Arnold L. Collier on December 26, 1943. A daughter, Karen Marie was born. He preceded her in death on March 13, 1945.

In 1949, a son, Tim was born to Maryleen and Dale L. Phillips. Dale preceded her in death on June 20, 1951.

Maryleen attended Wilcox Beauty Academy in Dodge City, KS and worked as a hair dresser in Great Bend for approximately 20 years.

On April 26, 1957 she married Chester (Chet) F. Brown. A daughter, Cheslea Ann was born to them. Chet preceded her in death on January 16, 1998.

In the mid 1970’s she became a library volunteer in the USD#428 school system and later became Assistant Librarian.  She worked in each of the elementary schools, but spent most of her time at Jefferson and Lincoln libraries until she became ill with myasthenia gravis (a muscular dystrophy disease) in 2000 and was no longer able to work.  Late, she volunteered a few hours a week for Great Bend Internists at CKMC until she was no longer able.

She had also been diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 1978, with a recurrence in 1993 with continuous supervision after that. She was diagnosed with cutaneous follicular lymphoma in 2009.

Maryleen is survived by two daughters, Karen Morton of Great Bend and Cheslea Hodges of Indianapolis, Ind., a brother Lowell (Red) Meier of Ellinwood; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Tim Collier, two sisters: Wanda Kayartz and Joann Wunder and a step-daughter, Carmalleita Brown Moore.

There is no visitation as cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at 2:00 with Pastor Larry Schumacher presiding. A memorial has been established to USD 428 Foundation in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Terry Gene Thoren

Dateline: Great Bend, Kansas

Great Bend – Terry Gene Thoren, 58, passed away at his residence in Great Bend, KS on March 8, 2018. He was born on December 21, 1959 to Richard and Nadine (Krom) Thoren in Denver, Colorado.

Terry was a lifetime Barton County resident, self-employed, a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hoisington, Kansas and an avid participant in NHRA Drag Racing.

Survivors include sons, Matt Thoren of Great Bend, KS, Eric and wife Courtney Thoren of Great Bend, KS; daughter Tiffany Thoren of Fredericksburg, VA; brother, Charles Thoren of Tustin, CA; sisters, Sharie Martin of Colwich, KS, Keri Burger of Great Bend, KS, Diana Thoren of Waianae, HI, and one grandson, Jesse Thoren. He was preceded in death by his brother Richard Thoren and his sister Jerri Horner.

A memorial service is scheduled to 11:00AM Thursday, March 15, 2018 at First United Methodist Church, Hoisington, KS with Pastor Lennie Maxwell presiding. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial have been established to the Jesse Thoren Education Fund in care of the funeral home.

Mildred Gertrude Reif

Dateline: Odin, Kansas 

Mildred Gertrude Reif, 86, passed away March 10, 2018, at Via Christi Hospital St. Francis in Wichita, KS. She was born on November 7, 1931, at St. Rose Hospital in Great Bend, to John J. and Judith (Mater) Schneider.

On August 30, 1950, she married Steve Reif at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Olmitz. After the wedding, they settled on a farm near Odin, where they lived their entire married life of over 67 years.

A lifetime resident of Barton County, she was a homemaker. She loved music and going to dances with Steve. She enjoyed crocheting and gardening and was an active partner on the farm. She was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and St. Ann’s Altar Society of Odin.

Mildred was a 1949 graduate of Great Bend High School.

She is survived by her husband, of the home; four children, Melvin and wife Sammie Reif of Ellinwood, Raymond and wife Anne Reif and Janet and husband Gary Rapp of Great Bend, Theresa and husband Patrick Trapp of Hays; six grandchildren, Marci and husband Jason Elliott, Sarah and husband Tony Schmieg, Katie and husband Jason Beach, Emily Reif, Cole and wife Regan Reif, and Travis and wife Katrina Rapp; eight great-grandchildren, Brendan Elliott, Avery Elliott, Kylie Schmieg, Alexis Schmieg, Tanner Beach, Anna Beach, Sophie Arunski, and Fitz Reif; and one sister, Delores and husband Leo Frenzl of Great Bend.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Martin Schneider; and one sister, Marie Demel.

Friends may call 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. and Vigil and Rosary at 7p.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2018, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Odin, Kansas, celebrated by Father Terrence Klein. Burial will follow in Holy Family Cemetery.

Karlyn “Koggi” Sullivan

Great Bend–Karlyn “Koggi” Sullivan, 82, peacefully passed away Thursday, March 8, 2018 at Cherry Village Care Home in Great Bend. She was born February 11, 1936 in Hays the daughter of Carl and Lillian (Anderson) Hickey. She was united in marriage to Russell Dale Sullivan on July 29, 1954 in Duncan, Ok. He preceded her in death July 11, 1990.

Karlyn was a lifetime Great Bend resident. She was a lifetime member of the PTA. She was an avid sports fan and loved animals. Her grandkids loved to call her “Koggi” and she loved being with her grandkids.

Survivors include her daughters Kim Shelton and her husband William of Dallas, TX, Kelli Bayless Cummings and Kayci Harris and her husband Bob all of Great Bend; grandchildren Austin Shelton (Tracy), Amy (Evan)  Symank, Chris (Devyn) Shelton, Tyler Shelton, Logan (Lakin)  Bayless, Wyatt Bayless (Kenzie), Dane (Anna) Harris, Matthew Harris and Rachel Harris; great grandchildren Scarlett, Archer, Ethan, Alex, Sophia, Owen and Elliott. She was preceded in death by brother Jeffrey Hickey.

Funeral service will be 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 13, 2018 with Rev Dale McKinney officiating, Visitation will be 1:00 to 9:00 pm Monday March 12, 2018 with family present 6-8P.M. to greet friends, all at Bryant Funeral Home. Interment will be at Great Bend Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the St Jude Children Hospital or the Golden Belt Humane Society, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Nancy Louise Pack

Nancy Louise Pack, 78, passed away March 6, 2018, at Diversicare of Larned, Larned, Kan.  She was born January 17, 1940, at Urbana, Ohio, to Kenneth R. and Dorothy Agnes Wilson.  Nancy married Kenneth Pack Sept. 20, 1956, at Ohio.  He passed away Feb. 6, 2016.

Nancy, a long-time Great Bend resident, had previously served as a CNA at Woodhaven Care Center.  She was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed gospel music, playing bingo, and manicures.  She especially cherished and enjoyed time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include one son, Jeremiah Pack of Wichita, Kan.; one daughter, Barbara Guerra and husband Roberto of Great Bend; one sister, Bea Metz and husband Steve of Woodstock, Ohio; five grandchildren, Chai Guerra and wife Gracie, Izzy Guerra and wife Ashley, Mindy Mae Pack, Amy Pack, Vincent Pack and wife Sarina, Cassandra Pack and husband Manny, John Curtis Powell, and Trevor Moreno.

She was preceded in death by son, Kenneth Pack, Jr.; two daughters, Nancy Joann Hickman and Patricia Ellington; and one brother, Keith Stevens.

Memorial services have been scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2018, Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Schumacher officiating.  Inurnment will follow at Golden Belt Memorial Park, Great Bend. Wilhelmia Daye Hearn

GREAT BEND — Wilhelmia Daye Hearn, 82, passed away March 6, 2018, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kan.  She was born May 14, 1935, at Bronx, NY, to Bill and Mary Roedel.  Wilhelmia married Edward Hearn Aug. 26, 1955, at Sherman Oaks, Cal.

Wilhelmia, a retired hospital clerk, was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend, and enjoyed garage sales and cooking shows.

Survivors include husband, Edward Hearn, of the home; two sons, John Hearn and wife Cindy of El Dorado, Kan., and James Hearn of Arlington, Kan.; two daughters, Judy Schick and husband Robin of Lebo, Kan., and Jeanette Bowen and husband Tommy of Ridgeway, SC; six grandchildren, Lachelle Spencer, Mike Schick, Dallas Schick, Ashley Vogel, Evan Hearn, and Jaimie Hearn; and 13 great grandchildren.

Memorial services have been scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home, with The Reverend Jon Brudvig.  Inurnment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend.  There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Arlyn Neil Renz

Dateline: Albert, Kansas

ALBERT — Arlyn Neil Renz, 81, passed away March 4, 2018, at his home in Albert, Kan.  Arlyn was born October 20, 1936, in Rush Center, Kan., to Otto and Freida (Hemken) Renz. He married Gloria Cunningham September 7, 1957, at Hope Lutheran Church, Rush Center, Kan., by The Reverend Hugo Renz.

Arlyn, a long-time resident of Albert, was a 1954 graduate of LaCrosse High School, LaCrosse, Kan.  He was employed by National Gas Pipeline of America, Heizer, Kan., for 34 years, retiring in 1990 as an Instrument and Control Technician.  Arlyn was a member of the Albert Volunteer Fire Department for many years, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and took great pride in his unwavering care for his family and community.

Arlyn is survived by his wife, Gloria of the home; three sons, Steve Renz and wife Donna of Lakin, Kan., Kevin Renz and wife Diane of Great Bend, Kan., and Darrin Renz and wife Cindy of Ellisville, Miss.; one sister, Janice Johnson and husband Wayne of Hastings, Neb.; five grandkids, Megan, Jaime, Janelle, Justin, and Kenton; nine great grandkids, Aden, Lukien, Devin, Dylan, Sawyer, Marek, Emmika, Zayden, and Dorothy.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald, Verlyn, and Ronald; and great grandson, Colby.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 8, 2018, Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend, with Pastor Larry Schumacher officiating.  A private family inurnment will be held at Locust Grove Cemetery, Rush Center.  The register book will be available to sign from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 7, 2018, with the family receiving friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home.  Memorial funds have been established with Albert Volunteer Fire Department or Central Care Cancer Center or Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Carolyn Deverle Redding

AUGUSTA — Carolyn Deverle Redding, 80, passed away March 3, 2018, Homestead of Augusta, Augusta, Kan.  She was born September 8, 1937, at Ada, Okla., to Otis and Allene (Summers) Light. Carolyn married Dale H. Redding, on July 17, 1958 at Ellinwood, Kan.

Carolyn, graduating from high school in Buston, Kan., had been a resident of Augusta, Kan., since 1994, coming from Colorado Springs, Colo.  She was a homemaker and enjoyed reading and puzzles, and was an avid sports fan, especially of WSU and KU.  She was particularly devoted to her children and grandchildren, whom she loved and cherished.

Survivors include her husband, Dale H. Redding, of the home; two sons, Kevin Redding and wife Dollie of Madison, Ala., Kim Redding and wife Tracy of North Pole, AK; and one daughter, Kendra Gammons and husband Mitch of Missouri City, Texas; five grandchildren, Tina Rose, Kaitlyn Redding, Kristlyn Redding, Garrett Gammons, and Gracelyn Gammons; and four great grandchildren, Angel, Donovan, Johnathan, and Alayna Rose .  She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Dolores Poppelreiter.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend, Kan., with Pastor Larry Schumacher officiating.  Interment will follow at the Bushton Cemetery, Bushton.  Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m., Friday, March 9, with the family receiving friends from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home.  Memorial funds have been established with Alzheimer’s Foundation of America or BCDI, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Shirley Marie Blanchard

Dateline: Hoisington, Kansas

Shirley Marie Blanchard, 96, died March 4, 2018, at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Home, in Belton, MO. Born October 17, 1921, in Hagerstown, MD the daughter of Frank and Elsie ( Mattias) Lias.

She was united in marriage to Harold Blanchard on October 1, 1942, in Council Grove. Shirley was a member of the Eastern Star, 21st Century and ESA. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. She loved to quilt.

Survivors include son Larry Blanchard and wife Judy of Holiday Island, AR.; daughter Jacque Eichelberger and husband Nelson of Wytheville, VA.; sister Jackie Fouche of Hagerstown, MD.; 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren, 6 step great grandchildren, and 2 step great, great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brother Walter Lias.

Funeral service will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, March 9, 2018 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Hoisington, with The Rev Wayne Baldyga officiating. Visitation will be 9:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M., with a prayer service at 7:00 PM, Thursday March 8, 2018 with family present from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. to greet friends at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. Burial will be in Hoisington Cemetery.
