Shirley Mae Luther

GREAT BEND — Shirley Mae Luther, 89, passed away March 2, 2018, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington, Kan.  She was born February 19, 1929, at Tulsa, Okla., to William and Mildred (Graff) Campbell.  Shirley married Leland Julius Luther on April 8, 1948, at Great Bend.  He died November 2, 2007.

Shirley, a long time Great Bend resident, previously living in Colorado and Wyoming, was a rancher and dedicated owner and operator of  Appaloosa Acres.   She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Red Hat Club, Kansas Livestock Association, the American Quarter Horse Association America Miniature Horse Association and American Shetland Pony Club.  Shirley was known for her loyal compassionate heart.  She will especially be remembered for the unwavering love and care she provided for her animals and close friends.  She sold and brought animals at the Oklahoma Select Miniature Horse Sale and the Macon Missouri Exotic Animal Sale.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home with The Reverend Arlyn Thielenhaus and Troy Miller officiating.  Interment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend.  Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 6, 2018, with the family present from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home.  Memorials may be directed to the Golden Belt Humane Society or Kans for Kids, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Ruth Elizabeth

Dateline: Hoisington, Kansas 

Ruth Elizabeth Brack, 86, died March 2, 2018, at home, Hoisington.

Born February 9, 1932, in rural Barton County, Kansas, the daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Karst) Ochs.  On September 2, 1951, in Otis, Kansas, she married Ervin Brack.  He died February 21, 1973.  She was a homemaker, previously having worked as an office clerk primarily in the oil industry.

Ruth was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hoisington, she was a former Pink Lady for the Clara Barton Hospital Auxiliary, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include: a son, Dr. Marc Brack and wife Kim of Mesa, Arizona; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Brack of Phoenix, Arizona; and a sister Nadine Abel of Cadiz, Kentucky.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, daughter, Mona Brack, brothers, Lester Ochs and Hubert Ochs, and her companion of 29 years, Gerald Hamilton.

Memorial Service will be 10 a.m., Saturday, March 10th, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Reuben Lang ‘at officiating. Family will greet friends from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday. Inurnment will be in the Hoisington Cemetery.

Flossie Dewey

GREAT BEND — Flossie Dewey, 92, passed away March 2, 2018, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center, Great Bend.  She was born August 23, 1925, at Ellinwood, Kan., to Paul and Bertha (Langreher) Burhenn.  Flossie married Harold E. Dewey May 18, 1947, in Stafford County, Kan.  Harold died August 18, 2002.

A long-time resident of Great Bend, Flossie worked for Dillon’s as a deli clerk.  She enjoyed reading, gardening, playing cards, and had a deep love and compassion for her dogs.

Survivors include one son, Jeff Dewey of Great Bend; five daughters, Carolyn Dewey of Larned, Kan., Vivian Dewey and life partner Gail Dumler of Palmview, TX, Marlene Dewey and life partner Ron Jasper of Great Bend, Janis Chase and husband Frank of Wichita, Kan., and Catherine Horner and husband Allen of McPherson, Kan.; one brother, Virgil Burhenn and wife Beverly of Great Bend; and three grandsons, Josh, Jeremy, and Tyler.She was preceded in death by two brothers, Irvin Burhenn and Vernon Burhenn; and two sisters, Evelyn Schartz and Luella Schwager.

Terrolynn E. (Nye) Hurley

Holyrood–Terrolynn E. (Nye) Hurley, 71, passed away March 1, 2018 at Hays Medical Center. She was born April 25, 1946 in Colby, the daughter of Harold and Joyce Nye.

Terri lived in Oakley, Garden City and Topeka where she graduated high school. In the early years she worked as a police and juvenile officer. She was employed later by the Great Bend Public library for thirty-four years before she retired. She was united in marriage to Arthur Hurley July 13, 1996 at the First Baptist Church in Great Bend. Terri and her husband have been resident of Holyrood for many years. Terri is now happy living with the Lord.

Survivors include husband Arthur of the home; brother Ronald Nye of Oklahoma City, OK.

Service will be 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at the United Church of Christ in Holyrood with pastor Debra Rains officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday March 5, 2018 1:00- 9:00 P.M,

Kerry L. Murray

Great Bend–Kerry L. Murray, 63, passed away Wednesday, February 21, 2018, at Salina Regional Hospital. Kerry was born February 9, 1955 in Chardon, Ohio the son of Leonard and Beverly (Eggleson) Murray.

Kerry graduated with the class of 1973 in Great Bend. He was united in marriage to Penny Lloyd on May 14, 1976 in Great Bend. He was a self-employed independent driver for Little Debbie Snack Cakes. Kerry was a member of the Argonne Rebels as a flag bearer. Kerry loved all kinds of sports, softball, NASCAR, drag racing, WWE wrestling. He was a huge fan of the KU Jayhawks and the Kansas City Chiefs. Kerry was an avid listener to rock music.

Survivors include wife Penny and his beloved pet papillon Cozie both of the home; brother Darrell; sisters Collen Lustick and husband Ray and Dawn Andrews all of Ocala, FL.; nieces and nephews Kris, Kelly, Sean, Kari, Johnny, David Jr., Kari, Brook, Chris, Alex, Ryan, Kyle, Tiffany, Kendall, Luke; and many beloved friends. He was preceded in death by brother-in-law David Andrews.

Celebration of Kerry’s Life will be held with a reception 6:30- 8:30 p.m. Thursday March 8, 2018 at Bryant Funeral Home, the family request causal dress. Memorial has been established with the Kerry Murray Funeral Expense, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Shirley Kay Heiter

GREAT BEND — Shirley Kay Heiter, 81, passed away February 23, 2018, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center, Great Bend, Kan.  She was born April 15, 1936, at Great Bend, to Chris and Edna May (Schroeder) Ruhe.  Shirley married William Howard Heiter December 28, 1964, at Larned, Kan.  He died February 1, 2009.

Shirley, a lifetime resident of Great Bend, worked as a waitress for Ralph Wallace, retiring in 1979 to be a homemaker.  She enjoyed Bingo, word search puzzles, crossword puzzles, and trivia.

Survivors include two sons, Bill Phillips of and wife Sheila of Hoisington, Kan., and Chris Olds and wife LuAnn of Canton, Kan.; one daughter, Pamela Pelster of Chicago, Ill.; three sisters, Joyce Hall of Sapulpa, Okla., Wilma Poland of Wichita, Kan., and Naomi Decker of Woodward, Okla.; five grandchildren, Brian Dewberry, DeWayne Phillips, April Scheuerman, Erin King, and Chrissi Paine; twelve great-grandchildren; and one great great grandchildren.  She was preceded in passing by a son-in-law, Mark Pelster.

Wilma Lucile Wagner

Wilma Lucile Wagner, 96, died February 12, 2018, at Great Bend Health and Rehab, Great Bend. She was born February 28, 1921, in Hoisington, Kansas, the daughter of Frank Edward and Nellie Mae (Coats) Sypolt.
Wilma graduated from Hoisington High School in 1939.
On April 8, 1950, she married Lawrence Eugene Wagner in Hoisington, Kansas. He preceded her in death on December 20, 2006.
A lifetime Hoisington resident, Wilma had worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as a switchboard operator.
She was a member of the Faith Community Church, Order of the Eastern Star, EHU 20th Century Unit, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority Alpha Lota Chapter, and was a Girl Scout Leader.
Survivors include; three children, Wanda Jo Madden and husband Mike of Hoisington, Nora Lu Kirkpatrick of Pocatello, Idaho, and Keith Lynn Wagner of Canton, Michigan; grandchildren, Marcie Thompson and husband Jonathan of Sedgwick, Michael Madden of Wichita, Kellee Stoutenborough and husband Jim of Pocatello, Idaho, and Kody Kirkpatrick and wife Holly of Sachse, Texas; great grandchildren, Grace Thompson, Teal and Pruitt Kirkpatrick.
She was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence; daughter Nell Marie Wagner; siblings, Grace Sypolt, Elmer Sypolt, Mervin Sypolt, Melvin Sypolt, EB Gilbert Sypolt, Lola Moorhead, Opal VanBrimmer, Reita Rice, and Wanda Lee Deer.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 3, 2018, at Faith Community Church, 293 W. Barton County Road, Great Bend, with Pastor Sandy Kennedy presiding. Mary Theresia Haberman

GREAT BEND — Mary Theresia Haberman, 100, passed away February 22, 2018, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend, Kan.  She was born August 20, 1917, at Barton County, to Frank and Anna (Demel) Koester. Mary married Joseph L. Haberman on May 31, 1938, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Odin, Kan.  He died October 7, 1973. 

Mary, a lifetime resident of Barton County, was a homemaker and belonged to Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society, V.F.W. Post 3111 Auxiliary, and Fraternal Order of the Eagles Auxiliary. Mary enjoyed baking, dancing, traveling, and was a talented seamstress.

Survivors include two sons, Bill Haberman of Houston, Texas, and Joseph L. “Joey” Haberman of Great Bend; one sister, Rose Murphy and husband Mike of Great Bend; six grandchildren, Penny White (Bob Guiles), Jeffrey Vanaman, Wayne Ryan (Mylinda), Larry Ryan (Kim), Wendy Lockwood (Kevin), and Shelly Arnberger (Kevin); 13 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Robert E. Haberman and Bernard Haberman; two daughters, Virginia Peters and Delores Ryan; one granddaughter, Tammy Boyd; two brothers,  William Koester and Joseph Koester; four sisters, Helen Zorn, Anne Hickey, Augustina Axman, and Leona McCurry.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 26, 2018, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend, with Father Don Bedore officiating.  Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Great Bend.  Visitation will be 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Sunday, February 25, 2018 at Bryant Funeral Home, with an Altar Society Rosary at 4:00 p.m., and a Vigil with Rosary at 7:00 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home.  A Memorial Fund has been established with Sunflower Diversified Services, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Gene Brinson

Dateline: Hoisington, Kansas

Gene Brinson, 72, died February 19, 2018, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born August 21, 1945, in Great Bend, Kansas, the son of Waldo Delmar and Anna Harriett (Baugh) Brinson. Gene was a graduate of Hoisington High School.

A lifetime Hoisington resident, he worked as a fieldman for U-Haul.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge #646 of Great Bend, and a former board member for the Commission on Aging.

On June 28, 1964, he married Sandra Kay Sweeden in Great Bend, Kansas.  She preceded him in death on December 8, 2012.

Survivors include; a sister, Nancy Farmer and husband Jim of Hoisington; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a sister, LouAnn Fitzpatrick.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 24, 2018, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Don Fisher presiding.  Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery.  Friends may call 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ralph E. Draney

Great Bend—Ralph E. Draney, 89, passed away Sunday, February 18, 2018 at his home. He was born September 28, 1928 at Preston, NE the son of Alfred and Grace (Alspach) Draney.

Ralph was united in Marriage to Alyce Marie Dyer October 30, 1950 in Alma, NE. She preceded him in death June 8, 2015. Ralph was a rough neck and driller for many years. He was a veteran of the US Navy. He built his own house with the help of his sons. Ralph also loved woodworking and working with leather and fishing.

Survivors include sons Bob Draney and wife Gail of Derby and Ron Draney and wife Becky of Great Bend; daughters Susan Detter and husband Mike and Sandra Smith all of Great Bend; grandchildren Ryan Draney, Ross Draney, Stacy Runyan, Ron Draney Jr, Brandi Gruber, Amanda London, Jessica Beck and Emily Beck; sixteen great grandchildren; half-sister Kay Draney. He was preceded in death by brothers Bill and Neal.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 23, 2018 with Pastor Larry Schumacher officiating. Visitation will be 10::00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. Thursday, February 22, 2018 with family present to greet friends  6-8 p.m. both at Bryant Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
