Richard Bollig

Dateline: Great Bend, Kansas

GREAT BEND — Richard Bollig, 98, passed away February 16, 2018, at Locust Grove Village Nursing Home, La Crosse, Kan.  He was born June 20, 1919, at Ellis, Kan., to Jacob and Eva (Spies) Bollig.

Richard married Edith Herrman on November 14, 1949, at LaCrosse. Richard, a long-time resident of Great Bend, worked for Dr. Pepper Co. for seven years, then retired as a supervisor for Marlette Homes, after 27 years of service. Richard was a veteran of WW II, serving in the U.S. Army, 422nd Infantry, from February 27, 1941, to October 18, 1945, obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. Richard was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, V.F.W. Post 3111, and life member of American Legion Argonne Post 180, all of Great Bend.

Richard is survived by his wife, Edith Bollig, of the home; one son, Dale Bollig and Connie of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one daughter, Sylvia Billinger and husband Charles Pete of Great Bend; one sister, Mary Reinert of Denver, Colo.; five grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Gery Bollig; four brothers, Simon Bollig, Gilbert Bollig, Danny Bollig, Theodore Bollig; and one sister, Georgine Windholz.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 20, 2018, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend, with Father Don Bedore presiding.  Interment is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse, with Military Rites conducted by the Ft. Riley Honor Guard.  Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday, February 19, with a Vigil and Rosary at 7:00 p.m., with Father Ted Stoecklein presiding, all at Bryant Funeral Home.  A memorial funds have been established with Prince of Peace Parish or Locust Grove Activity Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

James Lee Hanks, Jr.

Dateline: Great Bend, Kansas

James Lee Hanks, Jr., 69, passed away February 12, 2018, at Almost Home, Great Bend, Kan.  He was born July 17, 1948, at El Dorado, Kan., to James Lee, Sr. and Lavina (Parks) Hanks.

Jim married Jean Schroeder September 4, 1971 at Alva, Oklahoma.  Jim, a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Vietnam War, had been a Great Bend resident since 1970, coming from Claflin, Kan.  He opened, owned and operated

J & L Coins since 1981.  Jim was a member of the American Legion Argonne Post 180, Great Bend Chamber of Commerce, Fraternal Order of the Eagles, all of Great Bend; the K.N.A. (Kansas Numismatic Association), Kansas Jewelers Association, Jewelers Board of Trade, and Rush County Coin Club.

Jim is survived by his wife, Jean of the home; one son James Lee Hanks, III of Great Bend; mother, Lavina Hanks Hurst of Great Bend; two brothers, Terry L. Hanks and wife Darla of Otis, Kan., and Steven L. Hanks and Connie of Burden, Kan.; two sisters, Caroline McCune and husband Brad of Great Bend, Diana Osburn of Great Bend; and by two grandchildren, McKenna Hanks and Bradley Hanks.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Lee Hanks, Sr., and by one sister, Angela Collier.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 15, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend, with Pastor Aaron Withrow officiating.  Interment will follow at Golden Belt Memorial Park, Great Bend, with military honors conducted by American Legion Argonne Riders and the Ft. Riley Honor Guard.  Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 14, with family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home.  Memorial Funds have been established with Almost Home, Inc. or Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Wanda “Ramona” Keenan

Great Bend–Wanda “Ramona” Keenan passed away February 10th, 2018 at Cherry Village surrounded by her family. Ramona was born August 31, 1931 to Nicholas E. and Anna (Heckens) Gutierrez. She married Gerald P. Keenan July 1, 1949 in Seward, KS. Gerald passed away November 14th, 1994.

During her lifetime Ramona opened her home up to numerous kids and adults who needed a place to live. She was always there to do whatever was needed for her family and friends. She never turned anyone away. She was a member of the ladies VFW and Eagles auxiliaries. She volunteered at the Red Cross and Salvation Army helping the victims of the Hoisington tornado. She also volunteered preparing and delivering Harvest Boxes to those who weren’t able to get out to pick them up. She worked at St. Rose hospital, Great Bend Manor, Eagles Lodge, American Legion and the VFW. Ramona loved her animals, raising quarter horses, sheep, dogs, cats and exotic fish and birds over the years. She always put everyone’s needs before her own and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Ramona is survived by her 4 children; Linda (Bob) Ramey of Pawnee Rock, Ramon (Brenda) Keenan of Pawnee Rock, Denise (Mike) Carroll of Broken Arrow, OK and Diane (Mouse) Newkirk of Great Bend. She has 7 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and the many who lived with her over the years.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gerald, grandson Brian Reed, parents Nicholas and Anna Gutierrez, 1 brother Richard Gutierrez and 3 sisters Norma Welborn, Virginia Emmons and Martha Jane Gutierrez.

Memorial services will be held 1:30p.m. Saturday February 17, 2018 with Father Ted Steocklein officiating, visitation with family will be 12:30 to service time, all at Bryant Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place.

Memorials have been established with Golden Belt Humane Society or Kindred Hospice, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Gael Bujanda

Great Bend — Gael Bujanda, 4, passed away February 7, 2018 at Children Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, MO. He was born in Great Bend on March 19, 2013, son of Jesus and Yansi Bujanda.

Gael was a beloved son, grandson, nephew and cousin. He absolutely loved all of his toys and he had a smile that would lighten up a whole room. His dream was to grow up to play baseball. He leaves us leaving a big empty spot in our hearts and will be missed dearly by all.

Survivors include his parents Jesus and Yansi; three brothers Jesus, 16 Eduardo, 16, Sebastian,9 and two sisters; Yarexi, 11 and Arianna,1.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday February 10, 2018, at St Rose Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Don Bedore. Interment will follow at Great Bend North, Great Bend, Kansas. Visitation will be 5 – 10 p.m. Friday February 9, 2018 at Bryant Funeral Home.

Marion J. Shuey

Dateline: Great Bend, Kansas

Marion J. “Mickie” Shuey, 83, passed away February 7, 2018, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kan. She was born October 9, 1934, at Hugoton, Kan., to Clark Earl and Lanetta Mae (Carr) Fulkerson. She married Roger Dean Shuey December 7, 1952, at Great Bend, Kan.  He died February 14, 2011.

Mrs. Shuey, a longtime resident of Great Bend, was a homemaker and had previously worked as a bartender at Smoky’s Dance Ranch.  She was a member of VFW Auxiliary Post 7428, American Legion Auxiliary Post 286, both of Hoisington, Kan., and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, of Great Bend.  She had a passion for life, especially enjoying her family, bowling, and reading.

Survivors include her four sons, Rick Shuey and wife Connie of Tioga, N.D., Ronnie Shuey and wife Bev of Great Bend, Roger Shuey and companion Leslie of Wilmington, S.C., and Joe Shuey and wife Darla of Manhattan, Kan.; one daughter, Pam Shuey of Hoisington; and seventeen grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Bill Shuey; one granddaughter, Melissa Shuey; two brothers, Delois Fulkerson, and Jack Fulkerson; and by one sister, Betty McCallister.

Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, February 12, 2018, at Bryant Funeral Home with The Reverend Dick Ogle. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Great Bend.  There will be no visitation, as cremation has taken place.

A memorial fund has been established with Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation to benefit the activities department, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Martha Stephens – Schriock

Dateline: Hoisington, Kansas

Martha Stephens – Schriock, 99, died February 6, 2018, at Leisure Homestead, St. John, Kansas. She was born September 22, 1918, on the family farm, in Bazine, Kansas, the daughter of John and Kathrine (Helmuth) Feck.

On May 20, 1945, she married Sgt. Courtland Harris Stephens, in Alexander, Kansas. He preceded her in death on December 18, 1975. She then married Leland Schriock on August 6, 1983, in Hoisington, Kansas, he preceded her in death on October 6, 1986.

A resident of Hoisington since 1958, coming from Duncan, Oklahoma, she was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church, a member of the V.F.W Auxiliary #7428 and the Heritage Club, all of Hoisington.

Martha had a love for cooking, and had worked in many restaurants, all the way up until the age of 85.
Survivors include; four children, Courtney Fulton of Topeka, Mary Bieberle of St. John, Steven Stephens and wife Debbie of Hoisington, and Dana Nelson and husband Doug of St. George; many nieces and nephews; and 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by both husbands, three sisters, Lydia Foos, Florence Strecker, and Alvina Bahm, sons-in-law, Ronald J. Fulton and Keith Bieberle, and 10 half siblings.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Monday, February 12, 2018, at First United Methodist Church, Hoisington, with Reverend Dr. Reuben Lang ‘at presiding. Burial will follow in Hoisington Cemetery. Friends may call 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, with family to receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m., at the funeral home.

Kenneth E. Horyna

Holyrood–Kenneth E. Horyna, 77, passed away February 4, 2018 at his home in Holyrood. He was born March 7, 1940 in Great Bend the son of Edward and Marie (Krmela) Horyna. Kenneth attended school in Pawnee Rock graduating with the class of 1958.

Kenneth was a member of the Vintage Chevy Club of America, the Eagles in Great Bend. He attended car shows and loved to show the cars he restored. Kenneth also loved to watch NASCAR and professional wrestling.

Survivors include his sons Dennis Horyna and wife Carla of Iowa, Gene Horyna of Hutchinson and Matt Horyna and wife Lisa of Olathe; brother Edwin Horyna of Lyons; sisters Rose Cosper of Irving, TX, Carol Huffman of Great Bend, Betty Hafenstine of La Crosse, Connie Allen of McPherson and Lois Cox of South Hutchinson; grandchildren Lia Denise Herrera, Andi Anderson, James Horyna, Allyssa Horyna, Kiefer Horyna and Anna Stapleton and ten Great Grandchildren; many Nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers Clarence and Donald; sisters Sylvia Horyna and Evelene Knox.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday February 8, 2018 at the Trinity Cemetery in Hudson with Rev. Larry Schumacher officiating. Visitation will be 1 -9 p.m. Wednesday February 7, 2018 with family present to greet friends 6-8 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home.

Memorial has been established to help with the funeral expense, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Erlinda “Linda” Fry

Ellinwood–Erlinda “Linda” Fry, 80, passed away February 4, 2018, at her Ellinwood residence.  She was born October 13, 1937, at Manila, Philippines, to Alfonzo and Lydia (Lomboy) Nicolas.

Linda married Harold Fry January 23, 1981, in Honolulu.  Erlinda “Linda”, a homemaker, was a current resident of Ellinwood, living the majority of her life in Pensacola, FL, and Manila, Philippines.

Survivors include her husband, Harold Fry, brother-in-law, Brian K. Fry of Ellinwood, and a niece, Brandy Pepperman of Great Bend; nephew Brian M. Fry of Great Bend; mother-in-law Hazel Fry of Ellinwood. Preceded in death by father-in-law Bob Fry

A private family service was held at Bryant Funeral Home, and a private inurnment will be held at a later date at Great Bend Cemetery.

Rose Mary Younger

Great Bend– Rose Mary Younger, 90, died February 3, 2018, at Great Bend. She was born November 4, 1927, at Liebenthal, Kan. to Alexander and Margaret (Kippes) Amrein.  Rose married Cletus Simon Younger September 22, 1949, at Victoria, Kan.  He died December 20, 2011.

Rose, a Great Bend resident since 1957 coming from Hays, was a homemaker and had previously worked part time for J.C. Penney.  She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella, and Club One Fitness.  She enjoyed traveling, gardening, and playing cards.

Survivors include one son, Gary Younger and wife Mary of Denver, Colo.; two daughters, Glenda Gaunt and husband Terry of Great Bend, and Jeanie Biggs and husband Craig of Sugar Grove, Ill.; Seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.  She was preceded in passing by three brothers, John Amrein, Albert Amrein, and George Amrein; and by one sister, Isabella Sander.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, February 9, 2018, at St Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Ted Stoecklein.  Interment will follow at St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria.  Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, February 8, with an Altar Society Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a Vigil with Daughters of Isabella Rosary at 7:00 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home.  Memorial Funds have been established with the Golden Belt Humane Society or Prince of Peace Parish Endowment, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Bobbie Lee Leon

Great Bend–Bobbie Lee Leon, 70, passed away February 2, 2018 at Great Bend Regional Hospital. He was born January 6, 1948 in Great Bend the son of Sextos and Irene (Weiss) Leon.

Bobbie was a lifetime resident of Great Bend. He was employed by Holiday Inn and Convention Center as a cook/dishwasher for twenty years plus. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

Survivors include sisters Juanita Clawson of Great Bend, Carolyn Rucker of Pampa, TX, Eloise Leon of Colorado Springs, Co.; brother Lawrence Leon of Colorado Springs, Co. and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by brothers Robert, Richard, Benny and Tony, sisters Gloria Leon, Dorothy Cannon, Diana Larkin, Barbara Leon and Petra Leon.

Visitation will be 10:00 am to 9:00 pm with family receiving friends 6:00 to 8:00 pm, Thursday February 8, 2018.  Services will be 10:30 am Friday February 9, 2018 both at Bryant Funeral Home with Father Ted Stoecklein officiating. Interment will follow at Golden Belt Cemetery.
