Elizabeth Ileen “Betty” Zimmerman

GREAT BEND — Elizabeth Ileen “Betty” Zimmerman, 83, passed away Nov. 20, 2017, surrounded by her family at River Bend Assisted Living, Great Bend. She was born June 4, 1934, at Hays, the daughter of Edgar Joseph and Helen Lucida (Hammerschmidt) Sanders. She married Donald Dean “Zip” Zimmerman Oct. 21, 1952 at Hays.  He passed away April 23, 2005. A Great Bend resident since 1952, coming from Hays, Mrs. Zimmerman was bookkeeper and car detailer for Zip’s Service, and did finish work for the homes she and Zip built.

Mrs. Zimmerman was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and was long-time treasurer of the Altar Society. She enjoyed ceramics, sewing, making drapes, tailoring and quilting.

Survivors include two sons, Joey Zimmerman and his wife Sara of Great Bend, and Denny Zimmerman and his wife Stacy of Searcy, Ark., and; two daughters, Yvonne Sumner and her husband Greg of Norcatur, and Linda Johnson and her husband Mike of Great Bend; one sister, Gladys Webster of Great Bend; and 19 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sons, Donald “Beaver” Zimmerman, Jr., Ronald “Roon” Zimmerman and Rick Zimmerman; one daughter, Debbie Branstetter; three brothers, Dennis Sanders, Leon Sanders and Donald Sanders; one sister, Charlotte Shearrer; one granddaughter, Amanda Zimmerman; and one great-grandson, Brandon Sumner.

Altar Society Rosary will be at 4 p.m., Friday, Nov. 24, 2017 at Bryant Funeral Home. Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 24, 2017, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 25, 2017, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Ted Stoecklein celebrating. Douglas James Wells

GREAT BEND — Douglas James Wells, 60, died Nov. 17, 2017, at his home in Great Bend. He was born April 20, 1957, at Great Bend, the son of Kenneth and Ruby (Popp) Wells. A lifetime Great Bend resident, Mr. Wells was an installer for Wells Seamless Guttering and owned Wells Shoe Repair.

Survivors include his father, Kenneth Wells of Great Bend; and three sisters, Debi McAnulla and her husband Steve, Carol Herrman and her husband Bill, and Cherie Davis, all of Great Bend.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials have been established with American Diabetes Association or Golden Belt Humane Society, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

DeSales Marguerite “Sally” Marmie

GREAT BEND — DeSales Marguerite “Sally” Marmie, 93, died Nov. 19, 2017, at Ellinwood District Hospital, Ellinwood. She was born April 7, 1924, at Wilson, the son of Henry W. and Anna V. (Klepper) Weber. A 1942 graduate of Wilson High School, Sally attended the University of Kansas, then moved to Great Bend in 1944 and was employed by Phillips Oil Co., and later co-owned and operated the Dairy Queen with her husband.  She married Robert Keith Marmie Oct. 3, 1951, at Great Bend.  He died March 9, 2009.

Mrs. Marmie was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society, Cosmopolitan Study Club, former board member of St. Patrick Catholic School, and was a retired Girl Scout leader.  She enjoyed playing bridge, and was an avid sports fan, particularly of K.U. basketball and the Kansas City Chiefs. In earlier years, she volunteered at St. Patrick Catholic School, and spent many summers boating and fishing with her family, at Cedar Bluff Reservoir.

Survivors include one son, Keith O. Marmie and his wife Rita of Tijeras, N.M.; three daughters, Deanna Marmie of Wichita, Mary Lou Kinsinger and her husband Daryn of Goddard, and Roberta Feist of Great Bend; four grandchildren, Erica Rhoads and husband Mike, Jessica Kinsinger, Jackie Kinsinger and Lauren Feist; and three great-grandchildren, Madalyn Rhoads, Corbin Rhoads and Kennedi Russell. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Richard Weber, Darrell Weber, Marland Weber and Henry Weber, Jr.; and two sisters, Berna Dean Soukup and Marie Weber.

Altar Society Rosary will be at 4 p.m. and Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2017 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Ted Stoecklein celebrating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery. Billy Eugene Schuster

GREAT BEND — Billy Eugene Schuster, 88, passed away Nov. 15, 2017, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. He was born March 4, 1929, at Liberal, the son of William George and Fern Evelyn (Wyer) Schuster. He married Wilma Jean Hathaway June 20, 1948, at Great Bend.  She died March 11, 2017. A Great Bend resident since 1947, coming from Hutchinson, Mr. Schuster was parts manager for Taylor, Davis-Childs, Bob Reiter, Elliott, and Dove Chevrolet Dealerships.

Survivors include two sons, Stan Schuster and his wife Diana of Great Bend, and Rick Schuster and his wife Linda of Tempe, Ariz.; two daughters, Nancy Thul and her husband Mark of Great Bend, and Rita Engram and her husband Al of Chandler, Ariz.; two brothers, Carl Schuster of Phoenix, Ariz., and Ed Schuster of Bellevue, Neb.; one half-brother, Jim Culver; 10 grandchildren, Stacy Benetos, Tracy Thul, Michelle Hayes, Brian Bowman, Randy Schuster, Jenny Schuster, Matt Thul, Abbie Schuster, Brian Schartz and Erin Schartz; and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Glenn Schuster and Louis Schuster; and by one half-sister, Cheryl Culver.

Graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 24, 2017, at Great Bend Cemetery, with Pastor Larry Schumacher. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials have been established with Kans for Kids or Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Merlin Grimes

GREAT BEND – Merlin Grimes, 83, died Nov. 17, 2017, at his home in Great Bend. He was born Sept. 22, 1934, in Osborne County, the son of Carl Lloyd and Georgia Anita (Perfect) Grimes. He married Nelva Wallace Jan. 19, 1956, at Alton.  A Great Bend residence since 1956, coming from Alton, he started his career as a cattle buyer for Thies Packing and later he owned and operated Golden Belt Feeders and was co-owner of Ellinwood Packing.

Mr. Grimes was a long-time active member of First Christian Church, Great Bend; was a member of the Kansas Livestock Association, Board of Directors of Community Bank of the Midwest, and Fort Hays State Difference Makers.

Survivors include his wife, Nelva Grimes, of the home; three daughters, Kim Guesnier and her husband Bernie of Great Bend, Brenda White and her husband Chuck of Wichita, and Jana Kaiser and her husband Stan of Kansas City; eight grandchildren, Abby Foster and her husband Brandon, Emily Ledford and her husband Cameron, Jacob Williamson and his wife Amy, Lindsey Ralston and her husband Robert, Kyle Kaiser and his wife Erin, Courtney Pierson and her husband Kyle, Brett Kaiser and Connor Kaiser; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Homer Grimes and Carol Grimes.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017, at First Christian Church in Great Bend, with the Rev. Josh Leu officiating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery. Frances Ann Urban

GREAT BEND — Frances Ann Urban, 94, died Nov. 17, 2017, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. She was born Jan. 30, 1923, at Liebenthal, the daughter of Mike and Magdalena (Herrman) Schaffer. She married Benedict Edward Urban Nov. 25, 1946, at Liebenthal.  He died May 26, 1975. A Great Bend resident since 1974, coming from rural Bison, Mrs. Urban was a homemaker.

Mrs. Urban was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella, all of Great Bend.

Survivors include two sons, Darrel Urban and his wife Susan of Bison, and David Urban and his wife Debbie of Great Bend; two daughters, Darletha “Dar” Zimmerman and her husband Duane of Springfield, Mo., and Diane Parker and her husband Barry of Great Bend; one sister, Mary Schaffer of Wichita; 11 grandchildren, Dichelle Hatch and her husband Gene, Darin Urban and his wife Rachel, Douglas Scheck and his wife Kelly, Dustin Urban and his wife Gina, Dana McVey and her husband Joe, Jerrica Urban, Carrie Roberts, Dustin Parker and his wife Jenny, Josh Pitchford, Jenna Pitchford and Jeremy Pitchford; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three grandsons, Dexter Urban, Derreck Urban and Devin Urban; three brothers, Vincent Schaffer, Joe Schaffer and Mike Schaffer; and seven sisters, Bertha Moeder, Abbie Moeder, Martina Werth, Ludwina Haselhorst, Monica Unrein, Annie Price and an infant sister.

Altar Society Rosary will be at 4 p.m., and Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 20, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Rosine L. Parish

GREAT BEND — Rosine L. Parish, 102, died Nov. 12, 2017, at Kenwood Plaza Assisted Living, St. John. She was born May 22, 1915, at Hudson, the daughter of Max and Minna (Nolte) Teichmann. She earned a teaching certificate and taught for two years until she married Harlie Albert Parish April 10, 1938, at Hudson.  He died Jan. 3, 2009. They moved to their farm home southeast of Great Bend immediately following their marriage and remained there until their deaths. A lifetime Barton and Stafford County resident, Mrs. Parish enjoyed family, friends, frying chicken, reading, talking about past events, preparing for the holidays and sharing what she had made. She was proud of her heritage, her church and the State of Kansas.

Mrs. Parish was a member of Peace Church, Hudson.

Survivors include one son, Harlie Parish, Jr. of Memphis, Tenn.; one daughter, Kay Ellen Eisele and her husband Robert of St. Louis, Mo.; four grandchildren, Patrick Wynn, Timothy Wynn, Julie Lehnig Bouge and Joseph Lehnig; and five great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Carol Joy Parish; daughter-in-law, Barbara Parish; son-in-law, Rudy Lehnig; three brothers, Otto Teichmann, Hugo Teichmann and Walter “Judge” Teichmann, four sisters, Lorene Teichmann, Velma Parish, Elsie Doellefeld Daniels and Esther Mueller, and one granddaughter, Shannon Parish.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 17, 2017, at Peace Church four miles north of Hudson, with Pastor Wade Russell officiating. Burial will be in Peace Church Cemetery, Hudson. Dorothy Alice Foos

GREAT BEND — Dorothy Alice Foos, 85, died Nov. 13, 2017, at Diversicare of Larned. She was born Aug. 23, 1932, at Radium, the daughter of Leon and Ruby (McComb) Gitgood. She married Leroy E. Foos Jan. 2, 1952, at Great Bend.  He died Dec. 2, 2015. A lifetime area resident, Mrs. Foos worked in her husband’s service station business and later she started the Golden Eagle Club at First National Bank and then the American Eagle Club at American State Bank, retiring in her seventies.

Mrs. Foos was a member of First Church of the Nazarene, where she could often be found serving as greeter.

Survivors include three sons, Lonnie Foos and companion Sandy Parret of Larned, Fred Foos and his wife Debra of Redmond, Ore., and David Foos and his wife Georgia of Derby; one brother, Joe Gitgood and his wife Della of Guthrie, Okla; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Kent Gitgood, John Gitgood and Benny Gitgood; and three sisters, Wanda Shaver, Jackie Houston and Janice Gitgood.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017, at First Church of the Nazarene in Great Bend with her niece, Pastor Dorothy Annette Whipp officiating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the family present from 6-8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 17, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home. Jane C. Hoff

Dateline: Claflin, Kansas 

Jane C. Hoff, 69, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2017, at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. She was born Feb. 8, 1948, in Coldwater, the daughter of E. Frank and Laurine (Schesser) Weber. She graduated from Emporia State Teachers College. Jane was united in marriage to Herb Hoff June 28, 1975, in Coldwater. She was a teacher for Ellsworth and Claflin schools and did outreach teaching for 42 years.

After retirement she loved to spend time making quilts. She was quick to help people out that needed help. She was a charter member of the Twisted Stitchers and a member of OES for fifty years.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Herb of the home; one brother, Charles Weber of Marion, Iowa; one sister, Gena Hoover of Emporia; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded by a brother, Alan Weber.

Services will be 10 a.m., Friday, Nov. 17, 2017, at the Claflin United Methodist Church with John Radenberg and Pastor Joe Voss officiating. Burial will follow at the Claflin Cemetery. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington, is in charge of arrangements.

Harvey Eugene Linn

ALBERT — Harvey Eugene Linn, 87, died Nov. 11, 2017, at Almost Home, Inc., Great Bend. He was born Jan. 22, 1930, in Tulsa, Okla., the son of Harvey and Olive (Franklin) Linn. Harvey served his country during World War II in the United States Army.

Harvey was united in marriage to Rosemary Lichter on Sept. 28, 1957.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus of St. Ann Catholic Church, Albert Mayor and City Clerk, and was the Olmitz baseball and basketball little league coach for many years. He worked for Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America for 37 years and retired in 1992.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Rosemary Linn of Albert; six sons Michael and wife Rocio Linn of Bakersfield, Calif, Mitchell and wife Tami Linn of Wichita,  Nick and wife Rosemary Linn of Smith Center, Randy Linn of El Paso, Texas, John and wife Sonya Linn of Hoyt, and Joey and wife Lori Linn of Hays; daughter Jeanne and husband Dave Byers of Hoisington; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Alvin Lichter of LaCrosse; sister-in-law Mary Linenberger of Great Bend and numerous nieces and nephews and many good friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Olive, infant grandsons, Jacob and Isaac Linn; brother-in-law, John Lichter and wife Christine, Joseph Lichter and wife Irene, Henry Lichter and Sylvester Linenberger.

Vigil with Knights of Columbus Rosary will be at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017, at St Ann Catholic Church, Olmitz. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017, at St. Ann Catholic Church, Olmitz with Father Charles Mazouch celebrating. Interment will be at St. Ann Cemetery, Olmitz, with military rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, 415 N. Main, Hoisington. Memorials are suggested to St. Ann Catholic Church or Albert Fire Department, in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.
