John K. Habiger

Dateline: Bushton, Kansas

John K. Habiger, 69, of Bushton, Kansas, passed away on October 29, 2017 at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington, Kansas.

John was born in Great Bend, Kansas, on September 6, 1948, the son of Paul and Anna (Heinz) Habiger.  He was a graduate of Holy Name and Bushton High School.  He earned a bachelor’s degree at Fort Hays State University in 1970.

John served his country as a United States Peace Corp Volunteer in the Kurdistan Providence of Iran.  He was an Agricultural Agent and traveled in parts of Turkey and Afghanistan.  Back in Bushton he was an agent with Federal Crop Insurance Corp.  He was also the Postmaster Relief in Bushton.

He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

John was preceded in death by his father, Paul Habiger, May 15, 1983 and Mary Mickel, January 2, 2017, his partner for 26 years.

John is survived by his mother, Anna (Heinz) Habiger, Bushton; sister, Roberta Habiger and her partner John, St. George, S.C.; three brothers of Bushton, Virgil Habiger and his wife Geri, Raymond Habiger and his wife Roxanna, and James Habiger and his wife Sharon.

John has donated his body to the University of Kansas School of Medicine and will then be cremated, per his request.  Funeral services are pending and will be held at a later date.

JuneAnna Marie Cruz-Gray

HUDSON — JuneAnna Marie Cruz-Gray, 12, died Oct. 31, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. She was born May 13, 2005, at Great Bend, the daughter of Tabitha Gray. A Hudson resident for nine years, coming from Hoisington, JuneAnna was a seventh grade student. She enjoyed tap dancing, animals and birds.

Survivors include her mother, Tabitha Gray of Hudson; maternal grandparents, Don and Tambra Cartlidge of Hudson; maternal grandfather, Philip Gray of Hutchinson; and aunts and uncles, Heather and Carlos Castelan of Harrisonville, Mo., JoAnna Gray of Bedford, Iowa, Michael Gray of Ellinwood, and Chris and Missy Gray of Minneola; and 10 cousins.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Dwight Dozier officiating.  Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home. Denis L. Hertel

GREAT BEND — Denis L. Hertel, 79, died Oct. 31, 2017, at his home in Great Bend. He was born June 30, 1938, at Salina, the son of Philip A. and Lorraine (Miltonberger) Hertel. He married Claudia Schulte May 29, 1965, at Victoria.  A long time Great Bend resident, Mr. Hertel worked in production and the news department for KCKT TV-2, Great Bend, for 21 years. He was a National Guard veteran.

He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council #862, both of Great Bend. He was active in Boy Scouts and enjoyed woodworking, computers, playing the accordion and photography.

Survivors include his wife, Claudia Hertel, of the home; two sons, Philip Hertel of Wichita, and Chris Hertel of Haysville; two brothers, Richard Hertel of Salina, and Don Hertel of Hays; three sisters, Patsy Staab and her husband Omar of Hays, Phyllis Mendes and her husband Raymond of Hugoton, and Dolores Myers of Hays; and one granddaughter, Jessica Hertel of Fort Worth, Texas. He was preceded in death by one brother, Valerian Hertel; and sister, Lolita Hertel.

Vigil Service with Knights of Columbus Rosary will be at 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 3, 2017, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Don Bedore celebrating. Clarissa married William Robert “Bill” Blessing Aug. 25, 1951 at Russell, KS.  He died Feb. 13, 2002.

A lifetime Barton County resident, Clarissa worked on the meat cutting line for Theis Packing Co., and earlier worked as a seamstress for Marlette Homes. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish and the Altar Society, and volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the Perpetual Adoration Chapel at Central Kansas Medical Center.  She enjoyed gardening, bird watching, walking, coffee fellowship, and time with her family.

GREAT BEND — Brenton Jay Weathers, 60, died Oct. 21, 2017, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center, Great Bend. He was born March 21, 1957, at Larned, the son of James L. and Elaine (Bauer) Weathers. A lifetime Great Bend resident, Mr. Weathers worked in the oilfield.

He was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, Great Bend.

Survivors include one son, Joey Meier of Kansas City; two daughters, Heather Marie Weathers of Great Bend, and Crystal Maureen Unrein of Virginia; one brother, James M. “Jimmy” Weathers of Great Bend; one sister, Karen Cedeno and her husband John of Great Bend; and several grandchildren.

Graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2017, at Great Bend Cemetery with Pastor Mike Munz officiating. Inurnment will be in Great Bend Cemetery. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials have been established with First Congregational United Church of Christ or Kindred Hospice, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Loretta married LeRoy Morgenstern Feb. 14, 1942 at Wichita, KS.  He died Oct. 3, 1993.

Loretta, a lifetime Hoisington resident and dedicated farm wife and mother, worked for a short time at Valley Center Bank, Valley Center, after graduating from Wichita Business College.  She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Altar Society, V.F.W. Auxiliary, and the American Legion Auxiliary, all of Hoisington.  She was active in several card groups and the Arturian Study Club, enjoyed traveling, and volunteered as a Pink Lady at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington.

Sandra Mae Wilhelm

SEWARD — Sandra Mae Wilhelm, 76, died Oct. 23, 2017, at Leisure Homestead, Stafford. She was born Jan. 29, 1941, at Bazine, the daughter of Emanuel and Evelyn (Bruse) Foos. She married Wayne Wilhelm Nov. 13, 1956, at Fort Morgan, Colo. A Seward resident since 1968, coming from Great Bend, Mrs. Wilhelm was a machine operator for Fuller Brush for 28 years, and previously was a cook at Radium Grade School.

Mrs. Wilhelm was a member of CrossPoint, Great Bend. She received the Lord as her Savior on Mother’s Day, May 9, 1999, at Haven Baptist Church and was baptized June 13, 1999.

Survivors include her husband, Wayne Wilhelm, of the home; two daughters, Kristi Kirkwood and her husband Les of Yoder, and Michele McEntire and her husband James of Freeport, Texas; one sister, Nancy Dunaway of Kilgore, Texas; one brother, Larry Foos of Olympia, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Sharon Kay Roach.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 27, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home with James C. McEntire officiating. Burial will be in Eden Valley Cemetery, north of Seward. Roy Lewis Jones

Dateline: Hoisington, Kansas

Roy Lewis Jones, 91, died October 23, 2017, at Ellinwood District Hospital.  He was born October 22, 1926, in Buford, Arkansas, the son of William and Della F. (Fugate) Jones.

Roy served during WWII, in the United States Navy as a Seaman First Class, on the ship the U.S.S. Piaute. Where he earned the Victory Medal.

A longtime Hoisington resident, Roy worked for the Union Pacific Railroad, in the Bridge and Building Department.  He retired on October 21, 1988.

Roy enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees #1333.

On November 15, 1957, he married Marie T. Hoeffner, in Great Bend, Kansas.  She preceded him in death on December 6, 2004.

Survivors include; a daughter, Nadine M. Jones of Hoisington; and nieces and nephews, Mary Hart and husband Stephen of Russell, Michelle Root and husband Steve of Great Bend, Everett Hoeffner and wife Davina of Hoisington, Shawna Shadduck and husband Kelly of Beaver, Leonard Ray Jones of Mountain Home, AR,  Della Phillips of Jacksonville, FL, Linda Davis and husband James of Winchester, TN, Vernon Jones and wife Linda of Mountain Home, AR, Helen Perkins of Lycine, Delores Kaiser of Colorado, John Kaiser and Frances Adams and husband Gary all of Kansas City, KS, Raymond, William, and Dwayne Jones of Mountain Home, AR.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Solomon N. Jones and William W. Jones, and a niece Carolyn Krawetzke.

Friends may sign the book 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m., Thursday, October 26, 2017, in Hoisington City Cemetery. Military Honors will be conducted by the United States Naval Honor Guard.
