Jan Allan Wesley

GREAT BEND – Jan Allan Wesley, 76, passed away September 10, 2019, at his home in Great Bend . He was born October 4, 1942, at Washington, MO, to Bliss & Dorothy (Houdyshell) Wesley. He married Cheryl Keil on December 6, 1964, at Great Bend. She survives.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Jan was a driver for Sunflower Diversified Services. He graduated with the Class of 1960 from Great Bend High School. He loved Kansas Jayhawk basketball and especially loved spending time with his granddaughter.

Survivors include, his wife Cheryl of the home; one son, Allan Wesley of Ellinwood; one daughter, Angie Wesley of Great Bend; and one granddaughter, Megan Wesley of Wichita. He was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place and no services will be held. Memorials are suggested to Sunflower Diversified Services, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Ruth Ann Smith

Dateline – Clearwater

Ruth Ann Smith, 81, died August 26, 2019, at Clearwater Nursing Home, Clearwater, Kansas.  She was born June 30, 1938, the daughter of Charley T. and Lorene (Musselman) Smith.

Ruth Ann graduated from Russell High School.

She was retired bookkeeper for Cains Coffee Company.

She is survived by a sister, Claudia C. Smith of Derby, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Bill, Curtis and Dean Smith; and sisters, Nadine Wolf, Linda Norman, and Kay Smith.

Graveside inurnment services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 14, 2019, at the Vansburg Cemetery, Brownell, Kansas.

Marion F. Frieb

Dateline – Olmitz

Marion F. Frieb, 89, died September 8, 2019, at River Bend Assisted Living Home, Great Bend, Kansas.  He was born November 13, 1929, in Great Bend, Kansas, the son of Carl F. and Elsie E. (Schober) Frieb.  Marion graduated from Olmitz High School in 1947 and then served as a Sergeant in the United States Army during the Korean War.

On July 16, 1952, he married Rose Marie Bahr at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Olmitz.

A lifetime Olmitz resident, he was a farmer and stockman.  He also worked as a fieldman for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service.

Marion was a lifelong member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church.  He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2100, where he was a Fourth Degree Knight, and served as financial secretary for over 30 years.  He was involved in numerous community boards, including the Farm Bureau, CO-OP, School Board, and Township Board.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Rose Marie Frieb of the home, and their six children; Carol Scheuerman (Craig) of Bison, Cathi Farha (Ned) of Wichita, Anita Hobbs (Bruce) of Mount Hope, Daniel Frieb (Teresa) of Olmitz, Timothy Frieb (Amy) of Olmitz, and Jan Frieb of Hutchinson; a brother, Neil Frieb of Olmitz, brother-in-law, Eugene Bahr of Olmitz, sister-in-law, Tessie Jilg of Great Bend; 12 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and one on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call 12 to 5 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home. With family to receive friends from 6-8 p.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Olmitz. Vigil with Knights of Columbus Rosary will begin at 7 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Thursday, September 12, 2019, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, celebrated by Father Anselm Eke, MSP.  Burial with military honors will follow in St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery, Olmitz.

Laura Jean Kraft

GREAT BEND – Laura Jean Kraft, 89, passed away September 7, 2019, at Country Place Home Plus, Hoisington. She was born August 10, 1930, in Brownell, KS, the daughter of Vincent & Mae (Squire) Fairbank. On January 1, 1949, she married Elden Kraft in Bazine, KS.  He died Aug. 31, 2011. A longtime resident of Great Bend, she was head of Fabrics at TG&Y in Great Bend for many years.

Mrs. Kraft was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Altar Society and Women’s Guild, and also taught Sunday school for many years. She was an expert seamstress.

Survivors include, one son, Marlin Kraft of Albuquerque, NM; two daughters, Marlane Haberman and husband Marvin of Great Bend, and Lavada Kraft of Great Bend; two sisters, Carol Small  of Temple, TX, and Dora Yoder and husband Bill of Gorham, KS; two brothers, Paul Fairbank of Independence, KS, and Bob Fairbank and wife Earline of Hays, KS; 4 grandchildren, Marcie Mattson and husband Dan, Brian Haberman and wife Rebecca, Angie Cook and husband Duston, and Liberty Dictson and husband Eric; 11 great grandchildren and 1 great grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vincent and Mae Fairbank; four brothers, Ralph Fairbank, Elmer Fairbank, Chet Fairbank and Richard Fairbank; and 4 sisters, June Bartlett, Audrey Lentz, Burdene Schweitzer and Esther Zordel.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 10, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 11, 2019, at St. Mark Lutheran Church, with Pastor Adam Wutka presiding. Dorothy (Ocon) Trevino

Hutchinson – Dorothy (Ocon) Trevino, 79, passed away September 2, 2019, at Hutchinson Health & Rehab, Hutchinson. She was born April 23, 1940, at Bryan, Texas to Joe & Beatrice (Garcia) Ocon. She married Frank Trevino on August 1, 1966, at Odessa, Texas.  He died November 18, 1996.

Coming from Odessa, Texas in 1966, Dorothy was a Great Bend resident. She was a homemaker and a member of Community Christian Church. She enjoyed sewing, word finds, the ID channel and Walker Texas Ranger. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include, four sons, Lee Trevino and wife LaDonnia of Hutchinson, Frank Trevino and wife Evonda, Jessie Trevino and wife Andrea and Richard Trevino, all of Great Bend; two daughters, Mary Hunter and husband Russell of Great Bend and Rosemary Trevino of Hutchinson; two brothers, Jesse Ocon and wife Lupe and Leslie Ocon and wife Linda, both of Odessa, Texas; one sister, Mary Lemon and husband Tanis of Abilene, Texas; 32 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank Trevino; and a sister, Josephine Guitan.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, September 5, 2019 at Bryant Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 6, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Pastor John Hembree presiding. David G. Demel

Dateline – Odin 

David G. Demel, 59, died September 2, 2019, at his home near Odin, Kansas. He was born September 29, 1959, the son of  August J. “Gus” and Katherine M. (Hickel) Demel. He graduated from Claflin High School in 1978.

A lifetime resident of Odin, David was a farmer and stockman. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council #2630 of Odin.

On September 6, 1997, he married Vyona Jo “Jodee” Clark at Holy Family Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Jodee Clark; children, Michael Clark (Demel) and wife Dallas Lemonds, Shane Demel, all of Odin, Coryee Edmonson of Hoisington; grandchildren, Dustin Edmonson of Great Bend, Courtney Edmonson and Brandi Edmonson both of Hoisington, and Tyler Lemonds of Pretty Prairie; great grandchildren, Lane Slaughter, Audree and Sean Lemonds, and a little bean on the way; eight siblings, Vernon Demel and wife Janice of Moundridge, Carol Nichol and husband Daryl Lee of Lakewood, Colorado, Gary Demel and wife Renee of Great Bend, Sharon Eichkorn and husband Bill of Hutchinson, Maurice Demel and wife Gaila of Ellinwood, Dale Demel and wife Michelle of Odin, Kurt Demel and wife Cindy of Larned, and Kirby Demel and wife Amy of Wichita.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Norman Eugene Demel.

Doris Ann Whithorn

Dateline – Hoisington 

Doris Ann Whithorn, 84, died September 2, 2019, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation.  She was born October 5, 1934, in Oskaloosa, Missouri, the daughter of Virgil and Annabelle (Page) Turner.

She was married to Richard Freeman and he died on July 12, 1955.

On December 4, 1959, she married Howard V. Whithorn, in Kingman, Kansas. He preceded her in death on December 1, 2011.

A resident of Hoisington since 1962, she was a homemaker.

She is survived by six brothers; Jim Turner of Arcadia, Charles Turner of Raytown, Missouri, Carl Turner of Pittsburg, Jack Turner of Arcadia, Bill Turner of Fort Scott, and Junior Turner of Arma; and four stepdaughters, Carole Richardson, Sharon Snell, Bonnie Miller, and Rona Smith; and many neices and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, a brother, Robert Turner, a sister Barbara Howell; and a stepson, Larry Whithorn.

Friends may call 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 6th, 2019, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Don Fisher presiding. Burial will follow in Hoisington Cemetery.

Mary Ann Jeroue

Olathe – Mary Ann Jeroue, 85, passed away August 31, 2019, at Villa St. Francis, Olathe, Kansas.  She was born February 24, 1934, to Arthur and Gladys (Welch, Morell) Mahaffy in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  She married Charles H. Jeroue July 18, 1953, at Marlette, Michigan.

A former Great Bend/Hoisington resident, Mary worked for USD #428 as a crossing guard for Lincoln School, owned C & M Upholstery Sales with Charles, worked for Marlette Homes and BCCC.  She was a devoted Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother.  Painting, Ceramics and Gardening were her passions, her Family was her life.

Survivors include, two sons, Kenneth (Barbara) Jeroue of Russell, KS, and Kelly (Kathi) Jeroue of Great Bend, KS; five daughters, Barbara Gordon of Priest River, Idaho, Jody (Steve) Klepper of Great Bend, KS, Cindy Maser of Clovis, NM, Jacqueline Jeroue of Fresno, CA, and Tammy (Todd) Alsup of Olathe, KS; three brothers, Charles (Marlene) Mahaffy of Peck, MI, Lawrence (Sharon) Mahaffy of Romeo, MI and Brian (Jill) Mahaffy of St Clair; one sister, Brenda (Gary) Carty of Royse City, TX; 14 Grandchildren, Kasey (Kayla), Kaleb, Kynzi, Nicole (Dave), Kendra (Jerry), Tina, Charlie (Mandy), Mark (Misty), Brandon (Michelle), Michelle, Brian, Dannielle (Bryce), Taylor, Spencer; 20 Great-Grandchildren, Carter, Parker, Peighton, Braylynn, Phoebe, Samuel, Aiden, Jordan, Travis, Trystan, Austin, Ethan, Logan, Macy, Hayden, Harper, Karter, Makenna, Makeila, Taylor. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles H. Jeroue; a son, Tracy Jeroue; a granddaughter, Dionne Jeroue Reed and son-in-law Douglas Gordon.

Marjorie Dawn Moeder

Dateline: Hoisington, Kansas

Marjorie Dawn Moeder, 80, passed away August 30, 2019, at ComfortCare Homes Of Wichita.  She was born April 26, 1939, at Hutchinson, to Ralph and Audra (Woodson) Scott.  Marjorie married Leo P. Moeder March 19, 1960, in Miami, Okla.  He died January 7, 2018.

A long time Hoisington resident, Marjorie was an office manager for Dr. Robert Moore in Hoisington and she retired as an administrative technician from the Veteran’s Administration in Wichita.  She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Odin, and V.F.W. Auxiliary, Hoisington.

Marjorie is survived by three daughters, Robin Walker and husband Sam of Wichita, Beth Myers and husband Shaun of Albuquerque, NM, Lee Axman and husband Dan of Olmitz; five grandchildren, Naomi Moeder, Matthew Auble, Meghann Coble, Tyler Axman and wife Taci, and Nick Jones; six great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Leo P.; a daughter, Jamie Moeder; and four sisters, Lydia Butler, Marie Smith, Robin Conde; and a sister-of-the-heart, Carol Moeder.

Vigil with Rosary will be 7 p.m., Tuesday Sept. 3, 2019, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30, Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2019, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Odin, celebrated by Father Don Bedore.  Interment will follow at Holy Family Cemetery. Visitation will be from Noon to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, 415 N. Main, Hoisington, KS.

Arlyn Edward Boxberger

Dateline: Great Bend, Kansas

Arlyn Edward Boxberger, 88, passed away Saturday, August 31, 2019 at his home in Great Bend. He was born January 8, 1931 in Otis the son of J. Edward and Pauline (Mai) Boxberger. He was united in marriage to Valeria “Vicki” Siedl on September 14, 1958 in Great Bend.

Arlyn has been a residence of Great Bend since 1958, coming from Ellis County. He was a construction superintendent with Clarke, Lindholm and Boxberger Construction Company. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. He enjoyed being with his family, hunting and University of Kansas basketball.

Survivors include his wife Vicki of the home; son Randy Boxberger and wife Cherie of Houston, Texas; brothers Dennis Boxberger of Otis and Kenneth Boxberger of Salina; two grandchildren Megan Boxberger and Erin Boxberger. He was preceded in death by brother Vernon and four sisters Doris Blank, Florence Ernest, Frances Huffman and Norma Schwein.

Visitation will be 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm with family present 5 to 6 pm Tuesday September 3, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home, Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am, Wednesday September 4, 2019 at Trinity Lutheran Church, with Rev. Barbara Jones presiding. Burial will follow at Galatia Cemetery.
