Dorothy Mae Newell Schuetz

GREAT BEND — Dorothy Mae Newell Schuetz, 98, died July 17, 2017, at her home in Great Bend. She was born April 28, 1919, at Great Bend, the daughter of Traver Perry and Nellie (Christner) Newell. She graduated from Great Bend High School in 1937 and was Rhorea Queen her senior year. That fall she enrolled at the University of Kansas and pledged Chi Omega. She fell in love with Glen Andrew Schuetz of Great Bend and they married June 26, 1938, at Great Bend. He died Nov. 22, 2001. Prior to her marriage, Mrs. Schuetz won a local beauty contest and was Miss Great Bend of 1938. She worked for her husband at Schuetz Hardware and later Schuetz Real Estate, both Main Street businesses.

Mrs. Schuetz was a member of First Presbyterian Church and PEO Chapter FS, both of Great Bend.

Survivors include one son, Perry Schuetz and his wife Nancy of Great Bend; one daughter, Sally Jensen of Great Bend; four grandchildren: Amy (Schuetz) Hurley and her husband Geoff of Imperial Beach, Calif., John Schuetz of Topeka, Jennifer (Jensen) Graves and her husband Brian of Hood River, Ore., and Justin Jensen and companion Meagan Johnson of Pomona, Calif.; five great-grandchildren, Kendyl Hurley, Quinn Hurley, Morgan Graves, Michelle Graves and Maxwell Graves; and one niece, Nell Ann Arvites of Anchorage, Alaska. She was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Phillips in 1981; and one son-in-law, Jeff Jensen in 2010.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 3, 2017, at Great Bend Cemetery. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in Great Bend with the Rev. Dr. Scott V. Solether officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2017 at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorials in Mrs. Schuetz’s name have been established with First Presbyterian Church or PEO Foundation or Barton Community College – Glen and Dorothy Schuetz Family Scholarship Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Stanley Dean Mai

GREAT BEND, Kan. — Stanley Dean Mai, 86, died July 26, 2017, at his home in Great Bend, Kan. He was born Oct. 6, 1930, at Russell County, Kan., the son of Adam and Pauline (Peil) Mai. He married Bonnie Lorene Higgins Jan. 28, 1951, at St. John Lutheran Church, Russell, Kan.  She died Aug. 29, 1999. He was a Great Bend resident for 55 years. In 2000, he retired from Monte Gardner Construction in Bakersfield, Calif. He was owner and operator of Independent Transport for Curtis Robinson and Son, Inc., and Kaw Transport. He spent many years as an oilfield employee for Joe Brougher Oil, Clinton Oil Company, Energy Reserve Group, and Sun Oilwell Cementing.

Mr. Mai enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and tinkering in his shop.

Survivors include four children: Jay Mai and his wife Kathy of Great Bend, Kan., Janet Gardner and husband Monte of Bakersfield, Calif., Lee Mai and Lindsey Jacobsen of North Platte, Neb., and Nancy Mai of the home; three brothers, Maynard Mai and his wife Lois of Glide, Ore., Donald Mai and his wife Karen of Piedmont, Calif., and Glen Mai and his wife Claudia of Reno, Nev.; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Stephanie Mai; two sons, Stanley Dean Mai, Jr. and Gerald Vernon Mai; one brother, Vernon Mai; one daughter-in-law, Rose Mai; and two grandsons, Darryl Coston, Jr. and Jared Mai.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 29, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home with the Rev. Adam D. Wutka officiating. Burial will follow in the Russell City Cemetery, Russell, Kan. Glenn Wayne Morgan

Glenn Wayne Morgan, 66, died July 20, 2017, at his home in Galatia. He was born October 24, 1950, the son of Arthur Glenn and Mary Teresa (Rahall) Morgan.
Glenn graduated from Doyle High School, Kernersville, North Carolina. He then attended school at Kansas University.
A longtime resident of Galatia, Glenn was self-employed, dealing in used cars, parts and antiques.
He is survived by his parents; Arthur and Mary Morgan of Hoisington, and three siblings; Ann Eulert and husband Bud of Hays, Kansas, Hope Krug and husband David of Topeka, Kansas, and Scott Morgan of Great Bend, Kansas; a nephew, Austin Krug of Overland Park, Kansas; and two nieces, Heather McGlocklin of Wichita and Bobbi Hase of Lenexa, Kansas.
A private family graveside will be held at a later date in Olivet Cemetery, Hoisington. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, PO Box 146, Hoisington, KS 67544.

Robert Dean Leon

GREAT BEND — Robert Dean Leon, 66, died July 18, 2017, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center, Great Bend. He was born Jan. 1, 1951, at Great Bend, the son of Sextos G. and Irene (Weiss) Leon. A lifetime Great Bend resident, Mr. Leon worked in the laundry at Central Kansas Medical Center and was a dishwasher at the Golden Belt Country Club.

He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

Survivors include two brothers, Bobbie Leon of Great Bend, and Richard Joe Leon of Salina; two sisters, Juanita Clawson of Great Bend, and Carolyn Rucker of Pampa, Texas; one half-brother, Lawrence Leon of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and one half-sister, Eloise Leon of Colorado Springs, Colo. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Benny Leon and Tony Leon, and five sisters, Gloria Leon, Dorothy Cannon, Diana Larkin, Barbara Ann Leon and Petra Leon.

Vigil will be at 7 p.m., Sunday, July 23, 2017 at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 24, 2017 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Ted Stoecklein celebrating. Pearl Irene White

GREAT BEND — Pearl Irene White, 89, died July 16, 2017, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. She was born May 31, 1928, at Ellinwood, the daughter of Joseph A. and Wilhelmine “Minnie” (Rose) Hershey. She married Clifford Eugene White Oct. 30, 1946, at Great Bend.  He died Jan. 20, 1993. A lifetime Barton County resident, Mrs. White was a bookkeeper for Wagner Trucking.

She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3111 Auxiliary, serving as president for several years. She took in many foster kids.

Survivors include two sons, Leonard J. White and his wife Sheryl of Goddard, and Leroy Denney and Christy Reynolds of Wichita; three daughters, Rebecca Carlson of Great Bend, Connie Ashley and her husband Bob of Great Bend, and Gladys Snow of Ellinwood; one daughter-in-law, Christy Denney of Springfield, Mo.; nine grandchildren, Nikki Meade, Amanda Fields, Steve Snook, Oliver Snook, Chris Carlson, Tina Creamer, Tracy McClure, Brandon White and Clifford White; and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Louis T. Hershey, one sister, Mary Ellen Hershey, and one grandson, Bradley Carlson.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 20, 2017, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend, with the Rev. Jon Brudvig officiating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery. Palmera L. “Paule” Brack

GREAT BEND — Palmera L. “Paule” Brack, 81, died July 13, 2017, at Almost Home, Inc., Great Bend. She was born Feb. 2, 1936, at Russell, the daughter of David and Pauline (Ehrlich) Keil. She married J. Dean “Butch” Brack Oct. 21, 1956, at Russell.  He died April 11, 1993. A Great Bend resident since 1956, coming from Russell, Mrs. Brack was owner and operator of Paule’s Bridal and Dress Fashions and Special Touch Flowers.

She enjoyed dirt track racing, spending time with family and friends and living life to the fullest.

Survivors include one daughter, Dorinda Brack (Steve Wissman) of Albert; one son, David Brack of Great Bend; one brother, Clarence Keil of Wichita; one sister: Florence Batt of Wichita; and one granddaughter, Steele Dawn Brack. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Delmar Keil and LeRoy Keil.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 17, 2017, at Foundry Methodist Church in Great Bend with Pastor Aaron Withrow officiating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery. Robin Lee Armstrong

ELLINWOOD — Robin Lee Armstrong, 57, died July 11, 2017, in Barton County, as the result of an automobile accident. She was born March 14, 1960, at Council Bluffs, Iowa, the daughter of Earl and Betty Gillenwater. She married Steven Armstrong July 1, 2000, at Des Moines, Iowa. An Ellinwood resident since 2013 coming from Des Moines, Iowa.

She was a caretaker and driver for Sunflower Diversified Services, Inc.

Survivors include her husband, Steven Armstrong, of the home; one son, Chad Wade and his wife Brandy of Des Moines, Iowa; one daughter, Christina Wade of Ellinwood; four brothers, David Davis of Florida, Darrell Davis of La Vista, Neb., Rocky Gillenwater of Omaha, Neb., and Randy Gillenwater of Council Bluffs, Iowa; one sister, Donna Tripplet of Omaha, Neb.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorial service will be at 3 p.m., Friday, July 14, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dick Ogle. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials are requested to Robin Armstrong Funeral Expense Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Thelma R. Carpenter

GREAT BEND — Thelma R. Carpenter, 93, died July 11, 2017, at Brookdale Senior Living, Great Bend. She was born Nov. 24, 1923, at Ozawkie, the daughter of Levi Church and Rachael Ruth (Hurt) Noble. She graduated from Rock Creek High School and attended radio school in Topeka. She married Neal Russell Carpenter Jan. 30, 1943, at Cottonwood Falls.  He died August 24, 2015. She worked at Pratt-Whitney in Kansas City during World War II. She moved to Albuquerque, N.M., where she worked at Dillards and retired from Sandia National Laboratory. She moved to Great Bend in 1988, where she was a member of Liberty FCE and Lions.

She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, travelling, reading and hand crafts.

Survivors include one son, Donald Carpenter and his wife Cheryl of Rio Rancho, N.M.; two daughters, Billie Bonomo of Claflin, and Joyce Hagan and her husband Everett of Rio Rancho, N.M.; two sisters, Shirley Sackschewsky and her husband Marvin of Great Bend, and Donna Ward of Oskaloosa; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 74 years, Neal Carpenter; two sons-in-law, Robert Hetu and Robert Bonomo; one sister, Anna Cooper; one brother, Warren Noble; three brothers-in-law, Carl Metzger, Carl Ward and Edward Cooper; and one sister-in-law, Jean Noble.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Perry, at a later date. Memorials in Mrs. Carpenter’s name have been established with Kans for Kids, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Diana Elizabeth Sanders

GREAT BEND — Diana Elizabeth Sanders, 73, died unexpectedly July 8, 2017, at her rural Great Bend residence. She was born Aug. 29, 1943, at Great Bend, the daughter of George Joseph and Luella Pauline (Burhenn) Schwager. She married Robert LeRoy Sanders July 7, 1962, at Great Bend.  A lifetime Great Bend resident, Mrs. Sanders was a homemaker, property manager and sales professional. She currently was employed by Great Bend Appliance and Furniture.

Mrs. Sanders was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society, and Social Circle Club. She was a former Cub Scout, Girl Scout, and Campfire Girls Troop leader. She was a PBB, who gathered monthly. Her proudest accomplishments were centered around her family, both immediate and extended, always being there to offer her support in whatever endeavor they would try. She also loved hosting family and friends at home and was an exceptional cook and an avid reader, always trying new recipes or making up her own.

Survivors include her husband, Robert LeRoy Sanders, of the home; three sons, Robert E. Sanders and his wife Cindy of Enid, Okla., Kenneth G. Sanders and his wife Misty of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Matthew J. Sanders and his wife Stacy of Great Bend; one daughter: Gwendolyn S. Maris and her husband Brett of Trenton, Neb.; four brothers, Raymond Schwager and his wife Donita of Hays, Roger Schwager of Great Bend, Ricky Schwager of Great Bend, and Ronald Schwager and his wife Michelle of Hoisington; two sisters, Jeanette Soper of Great Bend, and Shirley Headley of Albert; 12 grandchildren, Rebecca Smith, Christina Deason, Julian Shuey, Jordin Scott, Lexi Maris, Dalton Shuey, Christian Zamora, Sebastian Zamora, Ivan Zamora, Cole Sanders, Paige Sanders and Dayna Sanders; 10 great-grandchildren, Leslie Sanders, Jadyn Smith, Aidyn Sanders, Shelbie Deason, Aaron Deason, Breckyn Scott, Greyson Scott, Averi Robinson, Viktoria Shuey and Leviathan Shuey; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert George Schwager; one great-grandson, Nicholas Smith; one nephew, Jerry Emerson; one niece, Lisa Woods, and one sister-in-law, Margaret Smith.

Altar Society Rosary will be at 4 p.m. and Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home.
