Sister Petrona Stockemer

Sister Petrona Stockemer, 98, died Sunday, June 25, 2017, in the Dominican Sisters’ convent infirmary, Great Bend. Born Sept. 22, 1918, in Cunningham, as Dolores Katherine Stockemer, Sister Petrona was the daughter of the late Peter and Katherine (Fischer) Stockemer. She entered the Dominican Sisters’ Community Aug. 21, 1933, and pronounced her first vows Aug. 10, 1936. She celebrated eighty years of religious profession in 2016.

Sister Petrona gave her entire early ministerial life to elementary teaching in the dioceses of Wichita and Dodge City, and in Lincoln, Nebraska. After her librarian certification she was the librarian at Trinity High School in Hutchinson, altogether nearly 60 years in education. During that time she received awards for her excellence in teaching, one as outstanding Secondary Educator of America and one for recognition of her 35 years of service as a teacher in the Wichita Diocese. She retired to the motherhouse in 2006.

Sister Petrona is survived by her Dominican Sisters of Peace Community and her cousins. Her blood sister, Sister Malachy Stockemer, preceded her in death.

Sister Petrona’s body will be brought to the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend, at 4 p.m., Monday, June 26, 2017, where it will lie in state until the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 28, 2017, with Rev. Don Bedore presiding. A wake service will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, June 27, 2017, at the convent. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery. Friends may call at the convent Tuesday, June 27, 2017, from 9 a.m. until the time of the wake service.

Jayne Kay Wapelhorst

GREAT BEND — Jayne Kay Wapelhorst, 60, died June 21, 2017, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. She was born Sept. 18, 1956, at Hutchinson, the daughter of Arthur Wilson and Frankie Lea (Watkins) Keffer. She was a 1975 graduate of Great Bend High School. She was married to Frank Wapelhorst from 1985 to 2000. She was a CNA for Dominican Sisters of Peace and had worked for Fresenius Kidney Care in Great Bend for 21 years. Ms. Wapelhorst was a lifetime Great Bend resident.

She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and the Altar Society and had spent many years performing with the Argonne Rebels Drum and Bugle Corps.

Survivors include great-niece, Hadleigh Renee Thorne of Hudson, for whom she was guardian; three sisters, Anita Ellen Fischer and husband Dennis of Great Bend, Jean Herrman and her partner Larry Partridge of Great Bend, and Anna Donecker and her husband Craig of Great Bend; three brothers, Arthur E. Keffer and his wife Terri of Ellinwood, William G. “Bill” Keffer and his wife Vicki of Great Bend, and Lee A. Keffer and his wife Brenda of Russell; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a niece, Jayne Lea Shumate.

Altar Society Rosary will be at 4 p.m. and Vigil service will be at 7 p.m., Sunday, June 25, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 26, 2017, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Ted Stoecklein officiating. Natha Gay Julian

GREAT BEND — Natha Gay Julian, 80, died June 14, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. She was born March 2, 1937, at Great Bend, the daughter of Clarence Thomas and Lillie Anna (Meyer) White. She married Manford Wayne “Sonny” Julian July 6, 1954, at Tucumcari, N.M.  He died Jan. 4, 2007. A lifetime Great Bend resident, Mrs. Julian was a homemaker.

She was a member of VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed bowling and spending time with family.

Survivors include two sons, Jeff Julian and his wife Susan of Blanchard, Okla., and Curtis Julian of Great Bend; two daughters, Shelli Price and her husband Terry of Great Bend, and Debra Birzer of Lyons; one sister, Norma Lee Kinzel and her husband Lawrence of Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren, Brooke Stowe, Michael Gliem, Sarah Kendall, Megan Johns, Carry Treat and Jessie Julian; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Ayvis Julian; one sister, Wilda Mae Merten; and one grandson, Brad Julian.

Memorial service will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 17, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home, with the Rev. Reuben Langat officiating. Inurnment will be in Great Bend Cemetery. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials have been established with Golden Belt Humane Society, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

JOHN L. WELCHER

JOHN   L. WELCHER 

John L. Welcher, age 60 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away on Sunday morning, June 11, 2017 at his home in Great Bend.   John was born on August 23, 1956 at Los Angeles, California to Sam L. and Millie (Tyler) Welcher.   He was united in marriage to Susanne Kay Renchko on January 6, 1973 in Los Angeles County, California, and they moved to Great Bend, Kansas in 1982.   John formerly worked as a Cashier at Dillon’s in Great Bend for 11 years and later worked for Venture Corporation in Great Bend for 12 years.   John loved to go fishing, loved watching TV, and enjoyed going for a drive.

John is survived by his wife, Susanne K. Welcher of Great Bend, Kansas; two sons:   Kevin Lee Welcher of Hays, Kansas and Matthew Cane Welcher of Great Bend, Kansas; his mother, Millie Macey of Great Bend, Kansas; one brother, Tom (and his wife, Debbie) Welcher and one sister, Sally Welcher all of Great Bend, Kansas; several nieces and nephews.

Cremation has been chosen. Alice Marie Dundas

GREAT BEND — Alice Marie Dundas, 87, died June 6, 2017, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center, Great Bend. She was born Aug. 23, 1929, at Moundridge, the daughter of Edwin A. and Frances (Graber) Wedel. She married Gerald Duane “Jerry” Dundas Oct. 10, 1954, at Moundridge.  He died July 9, 2009. A Great Bend resident since 1959, coming from McPherson, Mrs. Dundas was an elementary art teacher for Unified School District 428 for 30 years.

Mrs. Dundas was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Barton County Association of Retired School Personnel, life member of National Education Association, and Barton County Historical Society.

Survivors include a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Reford J. Wedel; and four sisters, Dorothy M. Kaufman, Betty Jane Hetzke, Irene Ruth Wedel and Helen Alice Wedel.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. Reuben Langat officiating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery. Vera Irene Burfield

GREAT BEND — Vera Irene Burfield, 94, died May 24, 2017, at Ellinwood District Hospital, Ellinwood. She was born May 24, 1923, at Matheson, Colo., the daughter of Ernest Jennings and Margaret Maye (Bolton) Irvin. She married Marvel V. Burfield Dec. 27, 1942, at Lyons.  He died Sept. 17, 1992. She attended school in Lyons and then Salt City Business College, Hutchinson. After marriage, the couple lived in Denver and Grand Junction, Colo.; Newton; Great Bend; Otis; Amarillo, Texas; and then settled in Lakewood, Colo., where she worked at the Jefferson County Library. Mrs. Burfield moved back to Great Bend in 2007.

Mrs. Burfield was a member of Central Baptist Church, Great Bend.

Survivors include two sons, Brent Ernest Burfield and his wife Margaret of Miami, Fla., and Rev. Bruce Arlan Burfield and his wife Keli of Belleville; one daughter, Andrea Kay Nelson and her husband Delbert of Great Bend; two sisters, Erma M. Shoopman of Midland, Texas, and Eileen B. Bayer of Radium; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Marvin Leonard Burfield; one brother, Claude E. Irvin; and one sister, Norma L. Koch.

Memorial service will be at 10 a.m., Friday, June 2, 2017, at Central Baptist Church in Great Bend, with Pastor David Walters and Pastor John Grummon. Inurnment will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 5, 2017, in Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, Colo. GREAT BEND — Coleen A. Murphy, 78, died May 23, 2017, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. She was born Oct. 20, 1938, at Great Bend, the daughter of Ralph and Selenah (Clements) Murphy. A lifetime Great Bend resident, Miss Murphy was employed by Barton County from 1958 until her retirement as County Clerk in 1995. She was a 1956 graduate of Great Bend High School.

She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She enjoyed playing bingo and attending family gatherings.

Survivors include one sister-in-law, Mary Murphy of Smyrna, Ga.; and a host of nieces and nephews, Dennis Smith and his wife Lee Ann of Bell, Fla.; Sharon Schremmer and her husband Ron of Wichita; Linda Whitt of Hutchinson; Jan Morgenstern and her husband Bob of Hoisington; Terry Smith of Salina; Mary Dumler and her husband Randy of Hoisington; Steve Murphy of Great Bend; Kathleen Asher of Derby; Chad Murphy and his wife Angela of Sterling; and Carrie Dickson and her husband Chris of Smyrna, Ga. She was preceded in death by two brothers, John Patrick Murphy and Thomas “Mike” Murphy; one sister, Margaret Smith; one brother-in-law, Bob Smith; one nephew, Mark Smith; one great-niece, Angela Murphy and one great-nephew, Brian Murphy.

Darrell Edward Keener

Dateline: Olmitz, Kansas

Darrell Edward Keener, 81, died May 23, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Hospital.  He was born January 17, 1936, in Great Bend, Kansas, the son of Orville and Ruby (Dillingham) Keener.

Darrell graduated from Great Bend High School in 1954. He then went to Kansas State University where he played on the baseball team and graduated with a degree in agriculture.

He served his country as a member of the United States Army Reserves.

Darrell was a farmer and stockman.  He bred and raised quarter horses and showed them on a national level.  Darrell also worked for many years as an insurance crop adjuster.

He was a member of the former Vine United Methodist Church and then First United Methodist Church, where he had served as a board member.  A lifetime member of the American Quarter Horse Association, serving on the board, and a director for the Kansas Youth Quarter Horse Association.  He was a former mayor of Olmitz and was a member of the Eureka Township Board.  He was also a former president for the Farm Bureau, during the 70’s.

On May 21, 1960, he married Arlene Rae Lewis in Stanfield, Oregon.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Arlene Rae Keener. Other survivors include; four daughters, DaLena Rae Keener and husband Chris Cook of Albert, Dana Camille Stoss and husband Jerry of Hoisington, Deana Kim Trail and husband Johnny of Orman Beach, Florida, and Dawn Marie Ensley of Great Bend; brothers-in-law Ted Lewis and wife Karen, and Daryl Smith; six grandchildren, Rantz Rowland and wife Katie of Hoisington, Darrell Lucas Keener of Olmitz, Nakota Rae Allen of Great Bend, and Ashton, Hayden, and Eden Ensley all of Great Bend; and one great grandson, Aiden Spencer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Edward Darrell Keener.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at First United Methodist Church, Hoisington, with Rev. Dr. Rueben Lang ‘at presiding.  Inurnment will follow at Walnut Valley Cemetery.  Friends may sign the book Thursday and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Monday 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Carolyn Rose Roberts

OKLAHOMA CITY — Carolyn Rose (Hooper) Roberts, 77, died Aug. 12, 2015, at her home in Oklahoma City.  She was born Sept. 25, 1937, near Seward, the daughter of Arthur Jacob and Goldie (Gates) Hooper.  She was a 1955 graduate of Great Bend High School where she was a member of the Scholastic Group.  She became a member of Bethel No. 30, International Order of Job’s Daughters in 1953 in Great Bend.  She attended Colorado Women’s college in Denver, Colo., and was a clothing fashion consultant.

She married Lester Dean Due on July 1, 1961, in Denver, Colorado.  She later married Donald Charles Roberts in 1971.

Carolyn was preceded in Death by her husband, Donald Charles Roberts; her parents, Arthur Jacob and Goldie (Gates) Hooper; her brother, Arthur J. Hooper; her sisters, Beverly L. Hooper, Elaine (Hooper) Taylor and husband, John Taylor, and Elizabeth (Hooper) Pascoe and husband Wendell Pascoe; and her niece, Cheryl Pascoe.  She is survived by numerous cousins and two stepsons.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, May 28, 2017, at the Gates Reunion at the Stafford County Courthouse Annex in St. John.  Inurnment was at the Eden Valley Cemetery located northeast of Seward.
