Carole Kay Butler

GREAT BEND — Carole Kay Butler, 72, died May 16, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Hospital in Great Bend. She was born Dec. 1, 1944, at Great Bend, the daughter of Otis Woodrow and Ruby (Henning) Hart. She was a 1962 graduate of Great Bend High School. She married Gary McArthur in 1964 and they divorced in 1973. She then married C.W. Butler Feb. 14, 1974, at Great Bend. She worked at First National Bank from 1971 to 1990 and then at Security State Bank and UMB Bank from 1990 to 1994.

After marrying C.W., he and Carole traveled to Europe several times, spent a week every year in Mexico, went to Hawaii and went on several cruises. They purchased their first motorhome in 1998, ending their overseas travels. They purchased their second motorhome in 2004, putting many miles on these RVs, only to cease travels due to Carole’s illness, multiple system atrophy, diagnosed in 2010. Carole and C.W. owned and remodeled many rental properties in Great Bend.

Survivors include her husband and best friend, C. W. Butler, of the home; two step-sons, Curtis Butler and his wife Norma of Great Bend, and Keith Butler and his wife Brenda of Parsons; five grandchildren, Chris Phillips of Arvada, Colo.; Angie Butler of Manhattan; Dr. Matthew Butler of Wichita; Marisa Butler of Coffeyville; and Dr. Katie Butler of Gainesville, Fla.; two great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Sandy Hart of Derby; and one niece, Amanda Mingoli and her husband Dan of Olathe. She was preceded in death by brother, Larry Hart.

Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor David Hollis officiating. Inurnment will be in Great Bend Cemetery Mausoleum. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials have been established with Golden Belt Humane Society, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Mildred Lorraine Harders

harders-mildredGREAT BEND — Mildred Lorraine Harders, 94, died May 21, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. She was born Dec. 30, 1922, in Barton County, the daughter of Harry A. and Ruby I. (Travis) LeRoy. She married Robert Vernon Harders Nov. 7, 1944, at Wichita.  He died July 3, 2013. A lifetime Barton County resident, Mrs. Harders was a homemaker and secretary for U.S.D. 428 Food Service.

Mrs. Harders was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women and Liberty FCE.

Survivors include three sons, James Harders and his wife Mary Kay of Olathe, Ronald Harders and his wife Nicki of Pawnee Rock, and Brian Harders and his wife Michelle of Ponca City, Okla.; one daughter, Sue Ware and her husband Karl of Great Bend; one brother, Robert LeRoy and his wife Lou Ann of Great Bend; one sister, Lois Marshall of Great Bend; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Essmiller.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 27, 2017, at First Presbyterian Church in Great Bend, with the Rev. Dr. Scott V. Solether officiating. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials have been established with First Presbyterian Church or Kans for Kids, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Elanor Pearson

GREAT BEND — Eleanor Mary “Ellie” Pearson, 82, died May 21, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. She was born Aug. 22, 1934, at Clyde, N.Y., the daughter of Elmer and Helen (Schnabel) Barnes. She married Charles David “Chuck” Pearson June 27, 1959, at Lock Berlin, N.Y.  He died Sept. 7, 2002. A Great Bend resident since 1959, Mrs. Pearson was a physical education and health teacher at Roosevelt Junior High, was assistant activities director at Great Bend Recreation Center and was National Life Insurance agent. She was also a crossing guard at Jefferson Elementary School.

Mrs. Pearson was a member of First United Methodist Church, Meals on Wheels, Kansas Association of Life Underwriters, Kansas National Education Association, and Selective Service Board.

Survivors include one son, David Pearson of Great Bend; three daughters, Ann Werth and her husband Keith of Great Bend, Dawn Willms and her husband Brian of Dublin, Ohio, and Joan Henning and her husband Dale of Great Bend; five brothers, Alvin Barnes of Newark, N.Y., James Barnes of Clyde, N.Y., Robert Barnes of Newark, N.Y., Richard Barnes of Clyde, N.Y., and Steven Barnes of Savannah, N.Y.; three sisters, Beverly Dayton of Port Gibson, N.Y., Barbara Brown of Ontario, N.Y., and Virginia Hicks of Walworth, N.Y.; twelve grandchildren, Maggie Smith and her husband Tyler, Abby Kujath and her husband Jacob, Jacob Werth, Mahlia Werth, Alexis Werth, Rebecca Willms, Kristen Willms, Cameron Willms, Isabelle Willms, Karli Busboom and her husband Ryan, Katelyn Henning and her fiancé Jeremy and Kendyl Henning; and six great-grandchildren, Charlie Smith, Chloe Mitchell, Brock Moore, Theo Smith, Maddox Mitchell and Franki Smith. She was preceded in death by one sister, Carolyn Montana.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Friday, May 26, 2017 at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lenard Maxwell officiating. Private family inurnment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Charles Robert Brown

GREAT BEND — Charles Robert Brown, 82, May 20, 2017, at Comanche County Medical Center, Coldwater. He was born July 9, 1934, at Great Bend, the son of Iva (Clawson) Brown. Charles married Mary Lou (Dickey) Wilburn, April 1, 1977, at Pratt.  A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was a retired truck driver for C.O. Mammel.

He was a member of Church of Christ in Great Bend.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Brown of Great Bend; two sons, Bill Brown and wife Julie of Kansas City; and George Brown of Texas; three daughters, Connie Flint and husband Bill of Lafayette, La.; Beverly Gannon of Great Bend; and Chesley Brown, Hutchinson; one step-son: Glenn Wilburn of Jasper, Texas; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a step-son, John Wilburn.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Friday, May 26, 2017, at Church of Christ, 1122 Stone St., Great Bend. Private family inurnment at a later date at Great Bend Cemetery North. Galen C. Lloyd, age 53 years, of Great Bend, Kansas passed away on Saturday afternoon, May 13, 2017 at Great Bend Regional Hospital in Great Bend after a sudden illness.   Galen was born on June 14, 1963 at Great Bend, Kansas to George J. and Betty J. (Byerly) Lloyd. He graduated from Great Bend High School in 1981, and was united in marriage to Paula Middleton on June 17, 1989 at Great Bend, Kansas. The couple later divorced.   Galen was united in marriage to Becky M. Kramer on January 16, 2014 at Great Bend, Kansas. He worked as a Roustabout and a Pumper in the Oil Patch, having worked for Hallwood Petroleum, White Eagle, and American Warrior, and Robinowitz Oilfield Service (which is now Dexxon). Galen loved to hang out with his High School friends, and showed love to his friends and family by showering them with gifts.   He had a special talent for “MacGyvering stuff”, a trait he learned early in life.

Survivors include his wife, Becky M. Lloyd of Great Bend, Kansas; two sons:   Luke B. Lloyd and Kendall J. Lloyd, both of Great Bend, Kansas; one daughter, Alex M. Lloyd of Great Bend, Kansas; six grandchildren:   Anna, Graydon, LaShauna, Memphis, Aleha, and Taylynn Lloyd; his mother, Betty J. Burton of Great Bend, Kansas; one brother, Richard Lloyd of Great Bend, Kansas; three sisters:   Cathy (and her husband, Arne) Apeland of Denton, Texas, Penny (and her husband, Kerry) Murray of Great Bend, Kansas, and Pamela (and her husband, Johnny) Hibbs of Burkburnett, Texas; nieces and nephews.   Galen was preceded in death by his father, George J. Lloyd, his stepfather, Irvin E. Burton, and one sister, Lawanda Ritchie.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at Charter Funerals in Great Bend, Kansas with Rev. Steve R. Engleman

LAWRENCE — Steve R. Engleman, 64, died, as he had lived, peacefully at his home in Lawrence, on Tuesday, May 9, 2017.  He was born Nov. 13, 1952, in Great Bend, the son of Dale and Jane (Fisher) Engleman. He attended Great Bend High School and Barton County Community College. Steve worked in his hometown for many years before moving to Lawrence in 2005, where he worked at the University of Kansas Student Union.

Steve was a good son and brother, a gentle soul who always had a smile for you and ready for a conversation with anyone.

He is survived by his older brother, Mark and wife Janet of Lawrence; niece, Megan; nephew, Sam; and grandson, Devyn.  He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Scott; his parents Jane and Dale; and son, Travis.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday at Warren-McElwain Funeral Home in Lawrence. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m., Friday at Great Bend Cemetery in Great Bend with the Rev. William F. Johnson officiating. Memorials have been established with the Scott Tucker Engleman Memorial Loan Fund at the University of Kansas Endowment, in care of Bryant Funeral Home, 1425 Patton Road, Great Bend.

Jack Lee McMahan

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Jack Lee McMahan, 70, died, May 3, 2017, at Kaiser Hospital in Santa Clara, Calif. He was born March 3, 1947 in Great Bend, the son of Hubert Roy “H.R.” and Sylvia (Brown) McMahan.

Jack graduated from Great Bend High School with the class of 1965. He also attended Hutchinson Community College where he studied electronics, graduating in 1967. In 1968 Jack moved to Alameda, Calif., to begin his 20 years of service in the United States Navy reaching the rank of SSG. After his navy career he worked for the Santa Clara County engineering department of traffic light division retiring in 2003. Jack loved taking pictures, fast cars, metal detecting, coin collecting and anything electronic.

Survivors include one brother, James McMahan of Great Bend; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jerry.

Graveside service will be at 11 a.m., Monday, May 15, 2017, at Great Bend Cemetery with Pastor Larry Schumacher officiating. Visitation will from 3-9 p.m., Sunday May 14, 2017, with family greeting friends from 3-5 p.m., at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorials have been established with Wounded Warrior Project, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Eleanor Katherine Witchey

witchey-eleanorGREAT BEND — Eleanor Katherine Witchey, 85, died May 8, 2017, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center, Great Bend. She was born Aug. 11, 1931, at Redwing, the daughter of William H. and Eleanor M. (Hickel) Linsner. She married Albert Witchey Feb. 14, 1970, at Las Vegas, Nev. They later divorced. A recent St. John resident, coming from Klamath Falls, Ore., in 2000, Mrs. Witchey was a bookkeeper for the Ellinwood and St. John nursing homes.

Mrs. Witchey was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and Altar Society and a former member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, St. John, and Golden Belt Community Concert Association. She enjoyed volunteering for the church and St. John library, crocheting, playing the piano and music.

Survivors include one sister, Gerri West of Great Bend; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, William A. Linsner, Jr., one sister Marilou Axman; and an infant son.

Altar Society will be at 1 p.m., and Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:30 p.m., Friday, May 12, 2017, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Don Bedore celebrating. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Odin. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m., Friday, May 12, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home. Harold D. Hudnall

hudnall-haroldGREAT BEND — Harold D. Hudnall, 82, died May 8, 2017, at his Great Bend residence. He was born Oct. 12, 1934 at Fairport, the son of Harry and Edra Mae (Brown) Hudnall. He married Velda Marie Steinle Oct. 6, 1957, at Russell.

He began working as bookkeeper and counter salesman for Scheufler Supply Company, Russell, in 1953 and became store manager in 1959. In 1966, Harold was promoted to general manager of the American Parts System (APS) Great Bend Distribution Center and the Big A Auto Parts Company stores, which had purchased Scheufler Supply.  In 1981, he supervised the building of the new 65,000-square-feet APS Distribution Center and Big A Company store, which served nearly 100 Big A stores in Kansas and surrounding states. He credited the company’s success to the Lord and the outstanding efforts and dedication of his many employees.

Mr. Hudnall was a Great Bend resident since 1967. He was a United States Army veteran, serving during the Berlin Crisis in 1962. He enjoyed playing golf and working on his 1956 Chevrolet.

Harold was a member of American Legion Argonne Post 180, served as president of Great Bend Kiwanis, Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship, and the Vintage Wheels Car Club. He served on the boards of directors of the American Red Cross, the Commission on Aging and the Great Bend Petroleum Club. Harold was a member of Faith Community Church.

Survivors include his wife, Velda Hudnall, of the home; one son, Todd Hudnall and his wife Kelly of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two daughters, Roxanne Weingartner and her husband Bill of Arvada, Colo., and Joy Sederwall and her husband Bryan of Arvada, Colo.; two sisters: Karen Jakub of Derby, and Connie Jahnke of Tucson, Ariz.; and seven grandchildren, Faith Hudnall, Luke Hudnall, Amber Lammers, Emily Rindels, Noah Sederwall, Jakan Sederwall and Jonah Sederwall. He was preceded in death by one brother, Harry “Bud” Hudnall, Jr., and one sister, Dorothy Wilson.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 13, 2017, at Faith Community Church in Great Bend, with Pastors Todd Hudnall and Sandy Kennedy officiating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery with military rites by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, May 12, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home.
