Lester A. Lindsay

Lester A. Lindsay, 54, died May 8, 2017, at Hays Medical Center. He was born January 5, 1963, in Hoisington, Kansas, the son of Lester L. and Dolores (Brewer) Lindsay. He graduated Hoisington High School in 1981.

A lifetime Hoisington and Olmitz area resident, he was a farmer. Lester was a member of the Olmitz Volunteer Fire Department. He had a great love of nature and enjoyed fishing, hunting and helping people.

He is survived by his wife and partner in life, Lisa Crist of the home; father, Lester “Buck” Lindsay of Olmitz; sisters, Sue Lindsay of Paola, Kansas, Pam Lindsay and husband Ken Bonham of Larned, Kansas, Debra Lindsay of Mesquite, Texas; nephew, Tyler Bonham; necies, Amy Schmidt and Andrea Amador; great nepews, Dominic and Austin Manley; and great nieces, Hailee and Gracie Bonham.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Dolores Lindsay.

Edna Nuss

Edna Nuss, 91, died May 7, 2017, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood.  She was born October 4, 1925, in Susank, Kansas, the daughter of George Jacob and Anna Marie (Daubert) Maier.

Edna was a lifetime resident of Barton County.  For 25 years she worked as a custodian for Barton County Community College, retiring on October 6, 1994.

She was a member of Emmanual Lutheran Church and a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary #7428.

A beloved grandmother, she loved spending time with her grandchildren. She loved to quilt and crochet and made quilts for each child, grandchild, and great grandchild.  She was an avid gardener with an amazing green thumb. She loved spending time in her yard and it had to be just perfect.

On February 17, 1947, she married Milton Marvin Nuss in Milberger, Kansas.  He died April 2, 1987.

Survivors include: children, Sandy Brown of Russell, Gary Nuss & wife Janet of Silver Creek, Wash., Warren Nuss and wife Sheila of Great Bend, and Pamela Aldrich and husband Troy of LaCrosse; sisters, Leona Slankard of Andover and Eleanora Postlethwaite of Great Bend; 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son; Richard Nuss; brothers, Sam, Edward, David and Emil Maier; and sisters, Alma Stewart, Hilda Jones, and Martha Bender; and a son-in-law John Brown.

Friends may call 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday with a Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m. at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 11, 2017, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Hoisington. Burial will follow in Hoisington Cemetery.

Hunter Stephen

received_794299390721487Hunter Stephen passed away Friday April 28, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Medical Hospital. Hunter was born in Great Bend on April 28, 2017, at 8 lbs 3oz and 21 inches long. He was the first born of Elizabeth C. Allison and Stephen C. Jaske. Hunter stayed to visit for 2 minutes before being called back home to our Lord and Savior. God’s reasons have not been made clear, the family is reassured in their hearts that he was met, in a glorious place by many loved ones who passed before him.

Survivors include his mother and father of the home; grandparents Kelly and William J. Allison of Great Bend, DeVonna and Kevin Jaske of Geneseo; great grandparents Connie McMillen, Darrell and Roberta Holden of Great Bend and Vickie and Loren Hopkins of Ellsworth; multiple aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorial service will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Saturday May 13, 2017 at Bryant Funeral Home with Don Paden officiating. In lieu of flowers family respectfully request that donations be made to Hunter Stephen’s memorial fund in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Marilyn Jane Kaiser

Marilyn Jane Kaiser, 91, died May 3, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Hospital.  She was born April 12, 1926, in Ellsworth County, Kansas, the daughter of Herman and Marie (Pfeiffer) Breford.

Marilyn graduated from Claflin High School in 1943.

She was a lifetime resident of the Bushton and Claflin area. She had worked for the IGA Grocery Store in Claflin, was the former activity director for Cherry Village in Great Bend, and later retired from Homestead Villa, in Hoisington, as the social service director.

Marilyn was a former member of Holy Name Catholic Church, Bushton, and a current member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Claflin. She was always involved in her church and active in the Altar Society.  She was also a former member of the Daughters of Isabella.

In 1944 she married Austin Zink. He died in 1950. She then married Leo N. Kaiser on September 25, 1954 in Bushton, Kansas.  He died September 7, 2007.

Survivors include: daughter, Mary Pryor and husband Robert of Great Bend, daughter-in-law, Donella Zink of Claflin, daughter, Angie Clutter of Hoisington, son, Jon Kaiser and wife Ruth of Ellinwood; 19 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands; a son, Terry Zink; brother, Glenn Breford; and two sons-in-law, Bernard Haberman and Don Clutter.

Vigil with Rosary service will be 7 p.m. Friday, May 5, 2017, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Claflin.  Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 6, 2017 at the church with Father Terrance Klein presiding.  Burial will follow in Holy Name Cemetery.  Friends may call 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Edith E. Chaloupek, age 64, of Stafford, Kansas and formerly of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away on Thursday morning, April 27, 2017 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center in Hutchinson, Kansas. Edith was born on February 15, 1953 at Delray Beach, Florida to Lawson Allen and Connie May (Hall) Cambron.   She was united in marriage to Bert Eugene “Gene” Chaloupek on December 18, 1977 in Kansas, and the couple settled in Great Bend nearly 30 years ago. Gene passed away on March 13, 2008, and Edith had been a resident of Stafford, Kansas for the past 5 years.   Edith was a homemaker and loved the outdoors, crocheting, and crossword puzzles, and especially loved her dog Minnie.   She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Survivors include one son, Michael (and his wife, Robin) Schulte of White Lake, Wisconsin and one stepson, Arlyn E. Chaloupek of Beaver, Oklahoma; two daughters:   Mandi (and her husband, Matthew) Desbien of Clinton, Missouri and Angie (and her husband, Danny) of Clinton, Missouri; one stepdaughter, Sheila Chaloupek of Clayton, New Mexico; fourteen grandchildren and one great-grandson; one brother, Hall (and his wife, Mimi) Cambron of Coalmont, Tennessee; four sisters:   Christine Creasman of Delray Beach, Florida, Linda Cambron of Florida, Norma Baine of Cleveland, Tennessee, and Peggy Katherine Cox of Delray Beach, Florida, numerous nieces and nephews.   Edith was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, “Bud” Whitley Cambron; five sisters:   Venita Hendrick, Cathine Rousch, Milly Cadle, Grace Olive, and Darlene Elrod; and one granddaughter in infancy.

Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 1, 2017 at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery north of Great Bend, Kansas with Reverend Don Paden officiating. Married Donna Smith October 11, 1958, at Chickasha, OK.  She survives.

A long time Great Bend resident, Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, where he served as a boating safety instructor, obtaining the rank of Captain.  Bill was a Peterbilt and Kenworth truck salesman for Doonan Peterbilt of Great Bend.  He was a member of Missionary Baptist Church, Great Bend, and Oklahoma Boat Racing Association. Bill was a volunteer for Golden Belt Humane Society, and was an avid golfer and sports fan, especially of University of Oklahoma athletics.

Two canine companions:  Willie and Buddy

He was preceded in death by one brother, Dick Gray; and by two sisters, Willie Lee Tharp and Johnnie Mae Simmons.

Katherine M. Demel

Katherine M. “Kate” Demel, 91, died April 20, 2017, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. She was born November 1, 1925, on the family farm near Beaver, Kansas, the daughter of Carl and Magdalena (Straub) Hickel.

On May 18, 1948, she married August J. “Gus” Demel at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, rural Ellinwood, Kansas. He died February 10, 2008.

A lifetime resident of the Beaver and Odin area, she was a homemaker and farm wife. She was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Odin and the St. Ann’s Altar Society where she had served as the Vice President.

Survivors include; nine children, Vernon Demel and wife Janice of Moundridge, Carol Nichol and husband Daryl Lee of Lakewood, Colo., Gary Demel and wife Renee of Great Bend, Sharon Eichkorn and husband Bill of Hutchinson, David Demel and wife Jodee of Claflin, Maurice Demel and wife Gaila of Ellinwood, Dale Demel and wife Michelle of Odin, Kurt Demel and wife Cindy of Larned, Kirby Demel and wife Amy of Wichita; 28 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, August J. “Gus” Demel, her son, Norman Eugene Demel; four brothers, Frederick, Ervin, Daniel, and Charles Hickel; and three sisters, Magdalena Zecha, Evelyn Cox, and Mary Ann Frenzl.

Vigil and Rosary will be 7 p.m. Monday, April 24, 2017, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Odin, celebrated by Father Don Bedore. Burial will follow in Holy Family Cemetery. RUSSELL — Gabriel Amaru Sebastian Usoro, 14 months, died April 19, 2017, at Wesley Children’s Hospital, Wichita. He was born Feb. 17, 2016, at Salina, the son of Oscar Sebastian Usoro and Brandi Marie Niehoff.

Survivors include his father, Oscar Sebastian Usoro of Great Bend; his mother, Brandi Marie Niehoff of Russell; one brother, Ezekiel Jackson Usoro of Great Bend; maternal grandparents, Curt and Marsha Niehoff of Dorrance; paternal grandfather, Eric Luttrell of Hoisington; and maternal grandmother, Tracy Millard of Milwaukee, Wis.

Memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, April 27, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home with the Rev. Dick Ogle officiating. Memorials are requested to the Gabriel Usoro Memorial Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
