Eldon J. Schremmer, age 65 years, of Beaver, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday morning, March 29, 2017 after a brief illness.   Eldon was born on October 2, 1951 at Hoisington, Kansas to Walter R. and Matilda J. (Zorn) Schremmer. A Barton County resident all his life, Eldon was a self-employed over the road truck driver for many years prior to his retirement.   He was of the Catholic faith, and enjoyed drag racing, farming, hunting and fishing.

Eldon is survived by one brother, Kenny (and his wife, Rosie) Schremmer of Hoisington, Kansas; two sisters:   Marilyn Stapleton of Greeley, Colorado and Jan (and her husband, Keith) Frenzl of Great Bend, Kansas; eight nieces and nephews.   He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at Holy Family Catholic Church with Fr. Edna Ellen Ruble

ruble-ednaGREAT BEND — Edna Ellen Ruble, 93, died March 29, 2017, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. She was born April 18, 1923, at Great Bend, the daughter of August Henry and Geraldine Frances (Chaney) Meyer. She married Sidney Ray Ruble Nov. 12, 1942, at Great Bend. He died April 20, 1969. A lifetime Great Bend resident, Mrs. Ruble was a retired machine operator at Fuller Brush and worked as a cook at American Legion Argonne Post 180 and Elks Lodge #1127.

Mrs. Ruble was a member of American Legion Post 180 Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary, both of Great Bend.

Survivors include three sons, Tom Ruble and his wife Mary Lou of Tomball, Texas, Henry Ruble and his wife Connie of Great Bend, and Mark Ruble of Great Bend; two daughters, Ellen Shanteau and her husband Darrell of St. John, and Geraldine Carper and her husband Chuck of Great Bend; one sister-in-law, Barbara Meyer of Enid, Okla.; nine grandchildren, Kristi, Angela, Amanda, Sean, Sarah, Staci, Brooke, Jennifer and Brett; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Edgar Meyer and Frank Meyer; one grandson, Aaron and twin great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be at 2 p.m., Monday, April 3, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home with The Reverend Dick Ogle officiating. Inurnment will be in Great Bend Cemetery. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to service time Monday at the funeral home. Memorials have been established with Alzheimer’s Association, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Carrol Black

GREAT BEND — Carrol Black, 75, died March 24, 2017, at her home in Great Bend. She was born Aug. 5, 1941, at Decatur, Ark., the daughter of Harold Richard and Georgia Irene (Appling) Drew. She married Tommy Alfred Stacey Nov. 14, 1973, at Safford, Ariz.  He died July 9, 1981. Mrs. Black was a CNA for Anthony Community Care.

Survivors include four sons, David Sunderland and his wife Suzie of Elko, Nev., Terry Cliffton Sunderland and his wife Kathy of Idaho, Richard Leon Sunderland, of Nevada, and Darrell Calvin of Arkansas City; two daughters, Leona Monasmith of Great Bend, and Kristine Renner of Anthony; two sisters, Mary Hanes of Anthony, and Kay Daniels of Waldron, Texas; two brothers, Richard Drew and his wife Sally of Roseburg, Ore., and Carl Van Dornstein of Anthony. She was preceded in death by one son, James Lee Stacey, and one daughter, Sherry Lynn Milin.

There will be no services. Memorials have been established with the Carrol Black Memorial Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Dorothy Ann Reif

Dorothy Ann Reif, 87, died March 24, 2017, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. She was born October 25, 1929, on the farm near Odin, Kansas, the daughter of Hugo and Matilda (Hoeffner) Frenzl.

She married Albert Reif on April 16, 1952, in Odin, Kansas. He died September 11, 1970.

Dorothy was a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Beaver, Kansas and also the St. Joseph Altar Society. She later became a member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hoisington, and was also a member of the Altar Society.

Survivors include children; Gary Reif and wife Karen of Great Bend, Duane Reif and wife Debbie of Hoisington, Eldon Reif and wife Karla of Holyrood, Karen Winkelman and husband Tim of Great Bend, Father Marvin Reif of Protection, and Nancy Jensen and husband Mark of Ellsworth; brother, Leo Frenzl and wife Dolores of Great Bend; sisters, Gertrude Hickel of Great Bend, Viola Meyeres of Ellinwood; sister-in-law, Edna Frenzl of Hays; seven grandchildren, Tammy Lichter, Kristi Ingalls, Sarah Bricker, Shane Reif, Alison Moore, Tyler Jensen, and Derek Jensen; nine great grandchildren, Brinly and Hadley Lichter, Cayson and Cala Ingalls, Kayley Bricker, Addyson Moore, Axson and Ainsley Jensen, Reed Jensen, and one more on the way.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and son, Leonard Reif, siblings, Marie Meyeres, Teresa Wondra, Frank Frenzl, Joseph Frenzl, August Frenzl, Lawrence Frenzl, and William Frenzl; and two grandchildren, David Reif and Branson Reif.

Friends may call noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Vigil with Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. Joseph A. Young, age 47 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away at his Great Bend home on Friday, March 24, 2017 after a lengthy illness. Joe was born on April 11, 1969 at Medicine Lodge, Kansas to Bernard C. and Teresa E. (Felton) and grew up and attended school in Pratt, Kansas. Joe worked as a carpenter in the construction trade for many years, and also worked in landscaping. He was united in marriage to Linda (Thimesch) Leslie on November 16, 2002 at Hutchinson, Kansas.   The couple lived in Colorado and Hutchinson, Kansas prior to moving to Great Bend three years ago.   Joe was a perfectionist in everything he did, and loved gardening, landscaping, fishing, and had a special love for his grandchildren.   Joe was also a huge K U fan.

Joe is survived by his wife, Linda Young of Great Bend, Kansas; one stepson, Garret (and his wife, Amie) Leslie of Hutchinson, Kansas and one step-daughter, Brandi Leslie of Hutchinson, Kansas; two grandchildren, Ally and Gracie Leslie; four brothers: William “Bill” (and his wife, Clovis) Young of Pratt, Kansas, Mike (and his wife, Jane) Young of Hays, Kansas, Wesley (and his wife, Diane) Young of Hutchinson, Kansas and Ken Young of Great Bend, Kansas; one sister, Donna Gould of Hutchinson, Kansas. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Kathy Brown; and one sister-in-law, Dana Young.

Cremation has been chosen. Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, March 27, 2017 at Charter Funerals in Great Bend, Kansas with Pastor Larry Schumacher officiating.   Inurnment will take place in Pleasant View Cemetery at Sawyer, Kansas at a later date.   Memorial donations are designated to the St. Rose Health Center Endowment Fund for Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice in Great Bend, Kansas. Edwin Dwayne Deckert

deckert-dwayneGREAT BEND — Edwin Dwayne Deckert, 90, died March 21, 2017, at Great Bend. He was born Jan. 5, 1927, at Great Bend, the son of Edward and Ricky (Unruh) Deckert. He attended the Pawnee Rock schools. On Aug. 24, 1949, he was united in marriage to Janis Dierking of Stafford. They made their home on the family farm northwest of Pawnee Rock for 40 years. Mr. Deckert was a farmer and long-time conservationist, plumber and welder. After retiring to Great Bend, he enjoyed traveling and golf. He was the proud father of two daughters, Rhonda Gayle and Sondra Lynn.

Mr. Deckert was a member of Bergthal Mennonite Church, Pawnee Rock and later First United Methodist Church, Great Bend.

Survivors include his wife, Janis Deckert, of the home; one daughter, Sondra Collins and her husband Mark of Bolivar, Mo.; two granddaughters, Libby Foster and her husband Brett of Butler, Mo., and Lindsey VanLeeuwen and her husband Blake of Arma; and four great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Rhonda Gayle Deckert in 2011, two brothers, Gerald Deckert and Gene Deckert; and one niece, Donna Spencer.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, March 24, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home with the Rev. Lenard Maxwell officiating. Burial will be in Mennonite Memorial Cemetery, three miles north of Pawnee Rock. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday, March 23, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home. Betty Jean Olivier

olivier-bettyGREAT BEND — Betty Jean Olivier, 92, died March 20, 2017, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Dec. 9, 1924, at Harper, the daughter of Everett F. and Vada (Seaman) Campbell. She married Robert Olivier Nov. 18, 1944 at Danville. A Great Bend resident since 1956, coming from Harper, Mrs. Olivier was a telephone operator and a clerk at Wiley’s and Komarek Jewelry.

Mrs. Olivier was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Altar Society, both of Great Bend. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, she was an avid reader, seamstress, gardener, and fantastic cook. She loved decorating her home for holidays.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Olivier, of the home; two sons, Robert “Bobby” Olivier and his wife Lora of Gardner, and Jeff Olivier and his wife Alice of Seward; one daughter, Leslie Roberts and her husband Dennis of Harper; 10 grandchildren, Melinda Maendele, Marcy Leu, Chris Olivier, Evan Olivier, Alex Olivier, Emma Olivier, Gabe Olivier, Angie Kramer, Ashley Gorney and Trenton Olivier; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Lee Campbell, and one sister, Leona Harris.

Altar Society Rosary will be at 4 p.m. and Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 22, 2013 at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, March 23, 2017, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Don Bedore celebrating. Edward Allen Ruble

Dateline: Hoisington, Kansas

Edward Allen Ruble, 97, died March 19, 2017, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend, Kansas.  He was born May 12, 1919, in Hoisington, Kansas, the son of William Monroe and Blanche Grace (Clift) Ruble.

Edward graduated from Hoisington High School in 1938.  He then worked in construction

for the Works Progress Administration, helping to build Hoisington High School, before joining the Army.

A WWII veteran, of the Pacific Theater, he served in the United States Army from 1941 to 1945, as Field Lineman for the First Signal Troop.

When returning home he then worked in the oil fields for D.H. Cook and Company.

Edward was a lifelong member of the American Legion and the V.F.W.

He is survived by a niece, Jo Ann Doan of Hays; cousins, Patricia “Pat” Cook and Larry Ruble, both of Hoisington, Tom Ruble of Tomball, Texas, Henry “Hank” Ruble of Great Bend, Ellen Shanteau of St. John, Geraldine “Gerry” Carper and Mark Ruble, both of Great Bend; a great niece and nephew, Pamela Roye and Alan Doan, both of Waxahachie, Texas; and many other distant relatives.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Howard L. Ruble and a sister, Betty J. Byers.

Friends may call 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Thursday, March 23, 2017, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Celeste Lasich presiding. Family will greet friends starting at 9:30 am just prior to the service. Burial will follow in Hoisington Cemetery, with military honors by Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Vivian E. Grossardt

Vivian E. Grossardt, 94, died March 16, 2017 at The Good Samaritian Society, Ellsworth. She was born March 27, 1922 in Hoisington, Kansas, the daughter of Paul and Rose (Müller) Radenberg.She was a life long Claflin resident. She was united in marriage to Harold Grossardt on October 20, 1945 in Claflin. He passed away August 10, 2000. She was a life long homemaker and farm wife.

She was a member of the Claflin United Methodist Church, United Methodist Womens, Dorcas Doers Circle and the Bible Study. She was also the organist for the church for over thirty years.

Survivors include sons Jim Grossardt and wife Linda of Siloam Springs, Arkansas and Ted Grossardt and wife Gretchen of Lexington, KY; daughters Joan Sutton and husband Stan of Topeka and Marie Bachman of Hoisington; brother Leo Radenberg and wife Pat of Great Bend; grandchildren Jill Werst and Mark Grossardt and three great grandchildren Hope Werst, Eva Grossardt and Roman Grossardt. She was preceded in death by brothers Albert and Marvin Radenberg and son-in-law Dan Bachman.

Services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at the Claflin United Methodist Church, in Claflin, KS.,with Pastor Gene Langhofer presiding. Burial will follow in Claflin Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with family to receive friends from 6-8 p.m. at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.

Frank E. Roesler

Frank E. Roesler, 92, died March 12, 2017, at Sandstone Heights, Little River, Kansas. He was born August 30, 1924, on the family farm east of Claflin, the son of Emanuel R. and Elsie B. (Norrie) Roesler.

Frank graduated from Claflin High School in 1943. He continued to farm on the land that his grandfather had homesteaded.

On December 11, 1964, he married Alvina Elizabeth Miller. She preceded him in death on April 8, 1983.

Frank was a member of the United Methodist Church of Claflin, the Claflin Post No. 171 of the American Legion, and the Claflin Masonic Lodge #424 AF & AM. He also had served on the Board of Directors at the Farmers and Merchants State Bank of Claflin.

Survivors include; sister, Lois McCormick of Lakewood, Colorado.; nephew, Michael McCormick of Minooka, Illinois; niece, Debra Zohn and husband Carl of Lakewood, Colorado; three great nieces and nephews; and six great great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and an infant brother.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 16, 2017, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington, with Reverend Gene Langhofer presiding. Family will greet friends just prior to the service at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Hoisington Cemetery.
