Great Bend—Wilma Jean Schuster, 86, died March 11, 2017 at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. She was born June 20, 1930, at St. John, the daughter of John William and Reno (Kanzleiter) Hathaway. She married Billy Eugene Schuster June 20, 1948, at Great Bend. She has been a resident of Great Bend since 1948 coming from St. John. She enjoyed genealogy, she also was a member of the Gemini Club. She was a clerk for Coast to Coast, ABC Drug and Triangle Drug Store.

Survivors include husband Billy of the home; two sons Rick Schuster and wife Linda of Phoenix, AZ and Stan Schuster and wife Diana of Great Bend; two daughters Nancy Thul and husband Mark of Great Bend and Rita Engram and husband Al of Phoenix, AZ; ten grandchildren Stacy, Tracy, Michelle, Brian, Randy, Jenny, Matt, Abbie, Brian and Erin; and sixteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers Elmer Hathaway, Willie Hathaway and Melvin Hathaway; and nine sisters, Alta Miller, Ida Staub, Edna Staub, Irene Cadman, Myrtle Bradley, Clara Long, Leona Ivy, Mary Hathaway and Grace Abel.

Services will be announced at a later date. Cremation has taken place. Memorials have been established with Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice or Kans for Kids, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

JoAnn Macurdy

 

macurdy-jo-annGREAT BEND – JoAnn Macurdy, 84, died March 8, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Hospital. She was born June 6, 1932, at Ellinwood, the daughter of Charles and Lillian (Bacon) Courtright. She was a graduate of Ellinwood High School and Wichita State University with a degree in accounting and secretarial services. She married James Lynn Macurdy Sept. 29, 1951, at Ellinwood.  He died Sept. 3, 1998. A longtime Great Bend resident, Mrs. Macurdy was a bookkeeper for her husband at Macurdy’s Hatchery and Great Bend Poultry Company and later for Brentwood, Ltd. and McDonald’s.

A loving caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, JoAnn took great pride in her family home of 62 years in which she raised three children, and provided a play area for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid golfer and nature lover and cared for any animal that was brought home or wandered in.

Survivors include one son, Haile L. Macurdy and his wife Elena of Warm Springs, Ga.; two daughters, Jamie L. Bailey and her husband David of Great Bend, and Kathryn A. Jackson and her husband Phillip of Great Bend; one sister, Linda Seip and her husband Charles of Pueblo, Colo.; five grandchildren; Justin Bailey, Chance Bailey, Ian Macurdy, Erin Macurdy and Cameron Jackson; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, William Courtright.

A come and go celebration of life will be from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at Holiday Inn Express, 3821 10th St. in Great Bend. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism for Kanopolis Lake, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

delgadillo-gerardoGREAT BEND — Gerardo Acosta Delgadillo, 50, died March 7, 2017, at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita. He was born June 23, 1966, at Aguanueva, Mexico, the son of Jose F. and Rosalia (Acosta) Delgadillo. He married Maria T. Martinez October 20, 1984 at San Juan. A Great Bend resident since 1986, coming from Mexico, Mr. Delgadillo was a concrete finisher for Smokey Hill Construction.

He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend.

Survivors include his wife, Maria T. Delgadillo, of the home; his parents, Jose F. and Rosalia Delgadillo; two sons, Saul Delgadillo and Gustavo J. Delgadillo, both of Great Bend; one daughter, Araceli E. Delgadillo of Great Bend; three brothers, Roberto Delgadillo, Fidel Delgadillo and Miguel Delgadillo, all of Great Bend; and four sisters, Maria M. Delgadillo of Mexico, Maricela Delgadillo of Great Bend, Rocio Delgadillo of Chicago, Ill., and Edelmira Delgadillo of Chicago, Ill. He was preceded in death by one son, Eduardo Delgadillo.

Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m., Friday, March 10, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home. Elmer F. Huslig

huslig-elmerWICHITA — Elmer F. Huslig, 81, passed away March 5, 2017, in Wichita. He was born Aug. 21, 1935, at Fowler, the son of Leo and Mary (Boor) Huslig. Elmer lived in Great Bend until he moved to Wichita in 2002. He worked for Great Bend Candy and Tobacco as well as Great Bend Music as a sales associate.  His passion for music was exhibited as a drummer, playing in several bands.

Mr. Huslig was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church for many years. As a member of the Argonne Rebel Drum and Bugle Corps, he was the state champion drummer.

Survivors include his brothers Laverne Huslig and wife Marilee of Ellinwood, and Hugo Huslig and wife Connie of Wichita; sisters Marion Sandlin of Laguna Niguel, Calif., and Florene Miller of Wichita; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by brothers, Bernard, Melvin and Donald.

Rosary will be 1:30 p.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 9, 2017, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Don Bedore celebrating. RONALD LEE ZAHNTER

Ronald Lee Zahnter, age 61 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away on Saturday morning, March 4, 2017 at Great Bend Regional Hospital in Great Bend. Ron was born on March 8, 1955 at Syracuse, Kansas to James Alvin and Irene Margaret (Hanson) Zahnter.   He grew up around Syracuse, Kansas, and was formerly employed as an auto and diesel mechanic at the Conoco Station in Syracuse, by Hurst Chevrolet in Goodland, Kansas, and the John Deere Implement Dealer in Kiowa, Kansas. He was united in marriage to Leann Railsback in 1973 and the couple later divorced in 1996.   In 1997, Ron was in an auto accident at Sublette, Kansas which left him disabled.   He had been a resident of Great Bend, Kansas for the past two years.   Ron’s passions included auto racing and tinkering with cars.   Although unable to do many of the things in the past several years which brought him joy, Ron loved having people around and was known as quite the jokester.

Ron is survived by one son, Darren (and his wife, Leann) Zahnter of Belleville, Kansas and one daughter, Angela Dawn Crowe of Belleville, Kansas; eight grandchildren; four brothers:   Marion “Sonny” (and his wife, Helen) Murphy of Gainesville, Florida, Alvin Zahnter (and his companion Connie) of Russell, Kansas, Gordon (and his wife, Tracy) Zahnter of Great Bend, Kansas and Chad Zahnter (and his companion Mary) of Florence, Mississippi; four sisters: Beverly (and her husband, Larrie) Beer of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Alvena Dewey of Syracuse, Kansas, Louetta (and her husband, T.J.) Miller of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Laura Beesley of Tulsa, Oklahoma; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.   He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers:   James Dale Zahnter and Herman Zahnter, and one sister, Wilma (Ellison) Reno.

Cremation has been chosen. Robert A. “Bob” Parrish

parrish-robertGREAT BEND — Robert A. “Bob” Parrish, 89, died March 2, 2017, at his home in Great Bend. He was born March 3, 1927, at Oklahoma City, Okla., the son of George Elbert and Leta Faye (Dodson) Parrish. He married Mary Belle “Polly” Pollock Sept. 1, 1949, at Kansas City, Mo.  She died April 21, 2005. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was owner and operator of Parrish Motors, the Dodge automobile agency.  He was a United States Army Air Corps veteran, serving during World War II.

Mr. Parrish was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, Great Bend Rotary Club, where he received the Paul Harris Fellow, and Barton County Historical Society, where he served as treasurer and president. He formerly was on the board of directors for American State Bank and the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and served as president in 1988. He served on the Great Bend City Council and served as Mayor from 1969 to 1975, was recipient of the Chamber’s Citizen of the Year for 2007, and served as Grand Marshal of the Great Bend Christmas Parade in 2010. Mr. Parrish was actively involved and held many offices in the Republican Party at the local, state and national levels. He enjoyed flying as a private pilot.

Survivors include one son, Rob Parrish and his wife Brenda of Lawrence; two daughters, Cheryl Bornkessel and her husband Bob of Overland Park, and Cynthia Viskocil and her husband James of River Falls, Wis.; six grandchildren, Thomas Parrish and his wife Weatherly, Sarah Parrish, Kimberly Viskocil and her husband Nate Scott, John Viskocil and his wife Ariana Mellow, Brooke Kunstman and her husband Matt, and Blake Bornkessel and his wife Alexandra; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Brett Bornkessel.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 8, 2017, at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Great Bend, with the Rev. Loren W. Hickerson officiating. day-carleyGREAT BEND — Carley M. Day, 82, died Feb. 28, 2017, at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita. She was born April 4, 1934, at Prague, Okla., the daughter of Charles E. and Helen (Coleman) Smith. She married Edwin Harold Day June 20, 1952, at Prague, Okla.  He died Aug. 9, 2010. A Great Bend resident since 1954, coming from Stillwater, Okla., Mrs. Day was the long-time manager of Howard’s Apparel.

Mrs. Day was a member of Central Baptist Church and an active member of the American Baptist Women’s Group.

Survivors include one son, Michael Day and his wife Joan of Pratt; son-in-law, Edd Jackson of Great Bend; three brothers, Bob Smith and his wife Regina, Jerry Smith and his wife Sharon and Sam Smith and his wife Linda, all of Prague, Okla; three sisters, Joyce Ellison and her husband Gene, Frances Simek and her husband T. J. and Sue Schima, all of Prague; five grandchildren, Chris Short and his wife Jennifer of Andover, Daylin Short of Lakewood, Colo., Jeff Jackson and his wife Alexandra of Olpe, Amanda Day of Hays, and Shanda Day of Wichita; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Pamela Jackson, and two sisters, Mary Ann Gregory and Mindy Calger.

Betty Lou Ferrell

ferrell-bettyGREAT BEND — Betty Lou Ferrell, 91, died March 1, 2017, at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains, Dodge City. She was born Sept. 22, 1925, at Garden City, the daughter of Ernest Eugene and Olive (Douglas) Webb. She married Ronell Bombardier Oct. 10, 1943.  He died Aug. 29, 1971.  She married LaVerne Townsend Sept. 13, 1974.  He died June 25, 1977.  She then married A.J. Ferrell June 23, 1985.  He died Nov. 28, 2006. A Great Bend resident since 1950, moving from Garden City, also residing in Albuquerque, N.M., and Elizabethton, Tenn., Betty had worked as an operator for Southwestern Bell, Great Bend, and served as a secretary and dispatch operator for the Great Bend Police Department.  Later moving to Elizabethton, Tenn., she worked as an operator for Intermountain Telephone Company.

Betty was a member of First Christian Church, American Legion Argonne Post 180 Auxiliary, and a former advisory board member for the Senior Center, all of Great Bend.

Survivors include one son, Randy Bombardier and wife Natasha of Vancouver, Wash.; three daughters: Diane Effertz of Great Bend, Deb Millikan and husband Mike of Olathe, and Cindy Dobratz and husband Don of Dodge City; one step-daughter: Virginia Shawver of Augusta; one brother, Darrell Webb of Wichita; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three step-children, Tom Ferrell, Jack Ferrell, and Mary Kay Beal; one son-in-law, Henry Effertz; and four brothers, Kenneth Webb, Elmer Webb, Gene Webb, and Vernon Webb.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Monday, March 6, 2017, at First Christian Church in Great Bend, with the Rev. Joshua Leu officiating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery North. GUY L. SUNDERLAND

Guy L. Sunderland, age 74 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away at his home in Great Bend on Monday evening, February 27, 2017.   Guy was born on February 3, 1943 at Ellsworth, Kansas to Guy and Etta May (McAtfee) Sunderland. Raised in Ellsworth, he also lived in Indiana, New Mexico, Arizona, and Garden City, Kansas before coming to Great Bend in 1992.   Guy was a veteran of the United States Air Force, where he served for 9 years, and a portion of that was time he was stationed in Guatemala.   He worked as a painter and upholsterer in auto body repair shops and also worked for Walmart prior to his retirement.   Guy was united in marriage to Karen L. (Mullenix) Brueggeman on March 10, 1977 at Great Bend, Kansas. He was a member of the Ellsworth American Legion, where he served as Past Vice Commander.   Guy loved fishing and hunting, jigsaw puzzles, adult coloring books, and life.

Guy is survived by his wife, Karen L. Sunderland of Great Bend, Kansas; two daughters:   Desiree Werth of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Dawn Feist of Great Bend, Kansas; six grandchildren:   Ashley Werth, Keshia Werth, Sydney Werth, Jotni Pankey, Kialy Giesking, and Sarah Tisdale; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.   He was preceded in death by his parents, two daughters:   Sue Anne Murray and Mandi Kay Alexander; one stepson, Brian Keith Brueggeman; and two sisters:   Ellen Woods and Frankie Duree.
