Elton E. Steinert

Elton E. Steinert, 68, died February 27, 2017, at Almost Home, Great Bend.  He was born March 10, 1948 in Great Bend, Kansas, the son of Paul and Nima (Ochs) Steinert.  Elton graduated from Hoisington High School in 1966, and then attended Ft. Hays State College, Hays.  He was a Vietnam Veteran serving with the United States Army.

On May 5, 1968, he married Kay Gustin in Galatia.  She survives.

A longtime resident of the Galatia area, Elton was a farmer and also worked for Superior Essex. Elton and Kay moved to Hoisington in 1999.

He was a member of United Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Milberger, where he served on the church council.  He was also a member of the American Legion and the V.F.W.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Kay Steinert; children, Kevin Steinert and wife Jamie of Derby, Tammy Patrick and husband Brett of Denver, Colo., Mike Steinert and wife Sally of Warner Robins, Georgia, and Andy Steinert and wife Tricia of Ft. Morgan, Colo.; brothers, Dennis Steinert and wife Jane of Russell, Arlyn Steinert and wife Cindy of Hoisington; sisters, Donna Donovan and husband Gerald of Hoisington, and Carol Herthel of Overland Park, Kansas; twelve grandchildren, Hannah, Olivia and Audrey Steinert, Michael Snapp, Cole and Cody Patrick, Bryce Mills, Riley and Brooklyn Steinert, Ally and Mady Stroh, and Alyssa Heesacker.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 1101 N. Vine, Hoisington.  Funeral will be 10:30 am, March 4, 2017, at United Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Milberger.  Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Galatia.  Memorials may be made to United Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Milberger, Kans for Kids, or Almost Home, in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, PO Box 146, Hoisington, KS 67544.

Faye Fisher Hanks

GREAT BEND — Faye Fisher Hanks, 91, died Feb. 24, 2017, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center, Great Bend. She was born April 18, 1925, in Bastrop County, Texas, the daughter of Manson Obed and Pearl (Fisher) Hanks. A Great Bend resident since 1994, coming from Texas, Miss Hanks was a home care provider for many years.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Edwin Hanks and Ivan Hanks.

Graveside service will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great Bend, with Pastor Larry Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, March 2, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home.

Ronald John “Ron” Staudinger

Ronald John “Ron” Staudinger, 81, died February 25, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Hospital.  He was born August 21, 1935, in Great Bend, Kansas, the son of Adolph J. and Emma Josephine (Schauf) Staudinger.  Ron graduated from Odin High School in 1953 and then graduated from St. Benedict’s College, Atchison, Kansas.  He served in the Army Reserves.

On May 4, 1963, he married Joan Magdalen Stoss, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hoisington.

Ron and Joan lived on and farmed at the family farm near Beaver for 34 years before moving to Great Bend in 1997.

He was a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Beaver. A current member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2630 at Odin, Kansas. Ron had also served on the Beaver Township Board.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joan Staudinger.  Other survivors include; daughters, Connie Jo Schlochtermeier of Beaver, and Linda Sue Stanley of Great Bend; brother, Milton Staudinger and wife Betty of Beaver; sisters, Rosemary Demel and husband Bob of Great Bend, Kathleen Meares and husband Jim of Salina; seven grandchildren, Blaize, Megan, Kyler, Kale, and Collin Schlochtermeier, and Cordell and Corbin Stanley.

Friends may call 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a Vigil service and rosary led by the Knights of Columbus at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.  Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend, celebrated by Father Don Bedore.  Burial will be at 1 p.m. in St. Joseph Cemetery, Beaver, Kansas. Lillie Jean Livingston

livingston-lillieGREAT BEND — Lillie Jean Livingston, 87, died Feb. 26, 2017, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. She was born April 11, 1929, at Hays, the daughter of James Ingalls and Bertha Susan (Ringeisen) Harbaugh. She married Delbert Brown Livingston Feb. 8, 1975, at Great Bend.  He died Aug. 31, 1988. A Great Bend resident since 1937, coming from Russell, Mrs. Livingston was a bookkeeper for Great Bend Ford Tractor.

Mrs. Livingston was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, and Altar Society, and was a former member of Lake Barton Golf Club and former member of Zeta Gamma Sorority. She was a volunteer for RSVP.

Survivors include three sons, Shannon Schartz and his wife Jennifer of Great Bend, Randy Schartz and his wife Suzanne of Overland Park, and Monte Schartz of Overland Park; one daughter, Deena Hutsell and her husband Al of Prairie Village; step daughter, Debbie Wise and her husband Dennis of Great Bend; two sisters, Bonnie Schartz and Phyllis Bodine, both of Hutchinson; six grandchildren, Casey Hutsell, Kelly Hutsell, Melanie Lewis, Ian Schartz, Brianna Schartz and Elizabeth Sneden; one step-granddaughter, Melissa Amerine; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by seven brothers, Warren Harbaugh, Willis Harbaugh, Richard Harbaugh, Ralph Harbaugh, James Harbaugh, Lloyd Harbaugh and Ernest Harbaugh; one sister, June Faulkner; and one grandson, Dane Schartz.

Evelyn V. Hammmerschmidt

Evelyn V. Hammmerschmidt, 71, died February 26, 2017, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. She was born Janaury 3, 1946, in Hoisington, Kansas, the daughter of Adolph and Mary (Demel) Gerritzen. Evelyn graduated from Hoisington High School in 1964.

A lifetime Hoisington resident, Evelyn worked for Fuller Brush for 39 years retiring in 2012. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and the Altar Society.

On October 22, 1982, she married Elwyn Dean Hammerschmidt in Great Bend, Kansas. He preceded her in death on May 11, 2011.

Survivors include; daughter, Angela Oberle and husband James of Pawnee Rock; son, Michael Spainhoward of Great Bend; grandson, Michael Oberle of Goodland; and two great grandsons, Zane and Liam; stepdaughter, Sheila Barnett and husband Tim of Goodland; brother, Robert Gerritzen and wife Erma of Hoisington; sister, Theresa Gerritzen of Hays; sister-in-law, Joyce Gerritzen of Marietta, Ohio; nieces, Rose Mary Saunders and husband Steve of Wichita, Patricia Droste of Hutchinson, Wendy Carpenter and husband Craig of Marietta, Ohio; and a nephew, Matthew Gerritzen of Hoisington.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; two sisters, Mary Kaiser and JoAnn Brown; brother, Jerome Gerritzen; and two nephews, Scott Gerritzen and William Gerritzen.

Georgann Stanley, 63, died February 24, 2017, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. She was born August 29, 1953, in Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of George Howard and Wonda Love (Bond) Herd. Georgann graduated from Southeast High School, Wichita, Kansas.
On July 18, 1981, she married Richard David Stanley, in Wichita, Kansas. He died August 7, 2009.
Georgann was a member of The Downtown Church and Church on the Street, Wichita.
She is survived by five children; Jessica Ann Marie Stanley of Hoisington, Thomas Richard Stanley and wife Ashley of Wichita, Sarah Elizabeth Stanley of Wichita, Julie Ann Fuller of Cape Coral, Florida, and Timbal Ann Stanley of Cape Coral, Florida; four siblings, Karmen Nowak of Mulvane, Kansas, Gene Herd of Oklahoma, Cindy Smith of Dallas, Texas, and Steve Herd of Wichita, Kansas; five grandchildren, Charlotte Stanley, Peter Stanley, Gage Stanley, Logan Fuller, and Alex Fuller.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Mary Louise Ney Degenhardt, 60, died February 25, 2017, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington.  She was born October 6, 1956, in Hoisington, Kansas, the daughter of Francis and Margaret (Koeller) Ney.  She graduated from Hoisington High School in 1974.

On September 8, 1979, she married Richard Lee Degenhardt at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hoisington.

Mary worked for O’Neill Tank Company and Allen Drilling Company for 20 years.

She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hoisington.

She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Richard Lee Degenhardt of the home; daughter, Andrea Farmer and husband Nick of Great Bend; granddaughter, Krisstian Farmer; mother, Margaret Ney of Hoisington; brothers, John Ney and wife Marie of Great Bend, Mike Ney of Hoisington, and Robert Ney and wife Hope of Hoisington.

She was preceded in death by her father, Francis Ney, and a sister-in-law, Debra Ney.

obit-photoGREAT BEND – Alice South, 89, died Feb. 23, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. She was born July 14, 1927, at Olmitz, the daughter of John and Theresa (Suchy) Krestin. A Great Bend resident since 1946, coming from Olmitz, Mrs. South worked at Fuller Brush Company.

She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Altar Society.

Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Stremel of Great Bend. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Arthur Krestin, Clarence Krestin, Edward Krestin and Fred Krestin; and four sisters, Viola Kober, Caroline Mlynar, Gertrude Smith, Grace Brack and Frances Krestin.

Edis Schauvliege

schauvliege-edisGREAT BEND — Edis Mae (Tustin) Switzer Schauvliege, 94, died Feb. 22, 2017, at Cherry Village, Great Bend. She was born June 15, 1922, at Gove County, the daughter of Lloyd Jacob and Mary Elizabeth (Simpson) Tustin. She married Neil Switzer April 24, 1947 at Hays. He died Oct. 26, 1967. She then married Cliff Schauvliege in January 1972 in New Mexico.  He died Nov. 29, 1993. A Great Bend resident since 1960, coming from Oakley, also living in Garden City, Goddard and Wichita, Mrs. Schauvliege was executive director for Red Cross and previously worked in the fabric department at Sears, was a bookkeeper for various banks and was school librarian at Goddard.

Edis was a volunteer kindergarten grandma at Central Kansas Christian Academy from 2004-2015. She was an avid bowler well into her 80s, and an amazing cook, showering everyone she knew with breads, cakes, soups or casseroles regularly.

Survivors include two sons, Lloyd Switzer and his wife Marlene of Ottawa, and Roger Switzer and his wife Pam of Great Bend; two daughters, Sandie Switzer-Farmer and her husband LeRoy of Wenatchee, Wash., and Shawna Hughes and her husband Brett of Hoisington; one daughter-in-law, Donna Switzer of Emporia; one step-son, Perry Schauvliege and his wife Leslie of Ponca City, Okla.; one step-daughter, Cathy Schultz and her husband John of Muskegon, Mich; two sisters, Lois Williams of Magnolia, Del., and Elta Kay Hooper of Taylor, Ariz.; one brother, Elmo Tustin of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 33 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sons, Floyd Switzer, Richard Switzer and Ronald Switzer; one step-son, Roy Schauvliege; and two sisters, Margie Smith and infant Mary Gayle Tustin.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 4, 2017 at Cherry Village Chapel, 1401 Cherry Ln., Great Bend with LeRoy Farmer officiating. Inurnment will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Oakley City Cemetery, Oakley. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Lasting Life Ministries, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
