Louise Brown Gunn

gunn-louiseGREAT BEND — Louise Brown Gunn, 93, died Feb. 22, 2017, at River Bend Assisted Living, Great Bend. She was born May 17, 1923, at Great Bend, the daughter of Joe and Ethel (Parker) Brown. She was a 1942 graduate of Great Bend High School. On Jan. 9, 1942, she married Glenn Gunn at Great Bend.  He died April 23, 1982. A lifetime Great Bend resident, Mrs. Gunn worked for Barton County Soil Conservation Service and later retired after many years from Fuller Brush Company.

She was an active member of First Christian Church, where she worked with the youth as a Sunday School teacher, sang in the choir, and was active on many committees. In addition, she served on the Board of Directors for the Kansas Christian Home. She also belonged to Order of Eastern Star, the Collectibles, Golden Girls, Etudian Club and Fort Zarah FCE. She volunteered at the Bloodmobile, CKMC, St. Rose Health Center, Silver Cougar Club and RSVP.

By example she taught those around her to be strong, independent, generous, kind and thoughtful of others. These qualities will always be in the hearts and minds of her children, grandchildren and those who knew her.

The family would like to thank the staff of River Bend, without whose loving care her final days would not have been so peaceful.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Anderson and her husband Jim of Bartlesville, Okla., and Margaret Baldwin and her husband Galen of Ellinwood; three grandchildren, Don Anderson and his wife Stefi, Greg Anderson and his wife Jessica, and Jessica Baldwin Ebert and her husband Shaun; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Ronald E. Gunn and Gary D. Gunn, two brothers, Leon Brown and Doug Brown; and four sisters, Ulanda Dorfshaffer Pugh, Ava Cole, Rachel Johnson and twin sister Lois Childers.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Feb. 27, 2017, at First Christian Church in Great Bend, with the Rev. Joshua Leu officiating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorials have been established with First Christian Church Youth or First Christian Church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Rita Margaret Stoss

stoss-ritaGREAT BEND — Rita Margaret Stoss, 87, died Feb. 20, 2017, at Cherry Village, Great Bend. She was born Nov. 9, 1929, at Bushton, the daughter of William and Barbara (Kirmer) Oberle. She married Lester L. Stoss Aug. 25, 1954, at Bushton.  He died Dec. 19, 1984. A lifetime area resident, Mrs. Stoss was a farm wife.

Mrs. Stoss was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church and Altar Society, both of Great Bend.

Survivors include six sons, Kenneth Stoss and his wife Maureen of Davenport, Iowa; Merlin Stoss and his wife Darlene of Great Bend, Dale Stoss and his wife Glenda of Olmitz, Duane Stoss and his wife Mary of Great Bend, Harlan Stoss and his wife Dianna of Olmitz, and Ronald Stoss and his wife Jeanne of Otis; one brother, Urban Oberle of Claflin; three sisters, Barbara Orth of Bushton, Anna Nordman of Albert, and Dorothy Stoss of Great Bend; 13 grandchildren, Nathan Stoss and his wife Nicole, Jeffrey Stoss, Jerald Stoss, Brent Stoss and his wife Jennifer, Nicholas Stoss, Nona Stoss, Erin Rowan and her husband Alex, Natalie Stoss, Angela Stoss, Krisha Stoss, Julie Stoss, Melanie Stoss and Laurie Stoss; and three great-grandchildren, Liam, Bailey and Greyson. She was preceded in death by one grandson, Kyle Stoss; six brothers, Ambrose Oberle, William F. Oberle, Philip Oberle, Andrew Oberle, and infants, Clement Oberle and Jerome Oberle; and one sister, Mary Frances Hertach.

Altar Society Rosary will be at 4 p.m. and Vigil Service with Rosary will be at 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Don Bedore celebrating. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Olmitz. Alvera Bitter

alvera-bitter-obit-photo Alvera Bitter died peacefully in Locust Grove Senior Center on February 20, 2017 in La Crosse, KS at the age of 104.

Alvera is survived by her son Dr. Gary G. Bitter (Jane) of Scottsdale, AZ. Grandchildren:  Brenda Bitter of Victoria, KS, Brian Bitter (Melissa) of Hoisington, KS, Bruce Bitter (Carrie) of Hoisington, KS, Brent Bitter (Paula) of Russell, KS,  Steven Bitter (Michelle) of Del Mar, CA, Michael Bitter (Kelly) of San Diego, CA, Matthew Bitter (Mimosa) of Scottsdale, AZ; Great Grandchildren:  Danielle Black (Jeff) of McPherson, KS,  Bradon Bitter, Wichita, KS, Julie Bitter, Kansas City, MO, Kayleigh Bitter, Hoisington, KS, Chris Bitter, Victoria, KS, Nathan Bitter, Russell, KS, Lauren, Kristin and Sean Bitter of Del Mar, CA, James, Kasey and Kendall Bitter of San Diego, CA, Blake, Avery, Emery  and Reed Bitter of Scottsdale, AZ;  and daughter-in-law, Karolyn Bitter McCaslin, Hoisington, KS. She was preceded in death by husband Solomon (March 17, 1996) and son Marvin (June 23, 1986).  Her mother on March 28, 1935 and father on February 3, 1969 and sister, Hilda Wilhelm and brothers Edwin, Gerhardt and Wilmer Bitter and Daughter-in-law, Kay (Burgat) Bitter.

Alvera Bitter was born March, 28, 1912, in Susank, KS, to Henry Bitter III and Eva Kathryn Stettinger.  She was baptized April 1, 1912 and confirmed May 22, 1926 at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Susank, KS. She married Solomon Bitter her sweetheart farmer on February 15, 1931.  At that time they started a small farm on the Northern Barton-Russell county line with two horses and some farm equipment received as wedding gifts from their parents. Several years later they moved to their permanent home North of Susank.   The couple welcomed two sons into their home; Marvin Bitter (October 15, 1933) and Gary (February 2, 1940).  Her children remember her as a deeply religious loving mother as well as an excellent cook and the best farmers’ wife that ever existed.  Alvera was an outstanding mother and encouraged her sons to pursue education and set high goals and accomplish them.

Alvera was an outstanding cook and donated her baking to various fund raising groups where she never had any items to take back home. Alvera was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church Susank, KS and always attended both German and English services. After moving to Hoisington she attended Concordia Lutheran Church and lived her life in accordance with the scriptures.  In fact, her son felt that she was a saint. She never missed church or bible school and was passionate about volunteering for church and community groups. She was very proud of her work with the County Election Board and was an avid quilter.

Friends may call 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.  A prayer service is scheduled for 7pm Friday February 24th at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington, KS. The funeral is scheduled for 11am Saturday February 25, 2017 at Concordia Lutheran Church, Hoisington with the Rev. Mark Lovett officiating.  All are welcome to attend and celebrate Alvera’s life. Margaret Julia Smith

smith-margaret-obitCLAFLIN — Margaret Julia Smith (Miller), 99, died Feb. 18, 2017, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. She was born Feb. 26, 1917, at Claflin, the daughter of Louis and Anna (Carey) Miller. She attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Claflin and graduated from Claflin High School. She married Warren T. Smith Aug. 17, 1936, at Claflin.  He died Dec. 29, 1994. A lifetime Claflin resident, Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and worked at Komarek Jewelers in Great Bend as a sales associate.

Mrs. Smith was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Altar Society, and Barton County EHU. She was a former member of Daughters of Isabella, Claflin, a former 4-H leader and a self-taught seamstress. She served on the board of directors for the Albro Housing Complex.

Survivors include one son, Carey Smith of Overland Park, one sister, Mary Catherine Wall of Florida; five grandchildren, Darrin Smith and wife Cathy, Kyle Smith and wife LaVeneia, Danette Schartz and husband Ed, Stephanie Gregory and Melanie Comer and husband Erv; ten great-grandchildren, Derek Smith, Courtney Swart, Preston Smith, Ross Schartz, Bethany Dreiling, Hillary Wilson, Breanna Schartz, Jake Gregory, Lukas Gregory and Miles Comer; and three great-great-grandchildren, Kensington Swart, Jaxson Schartz and Kase Schartz. She was preceded in death by three sons, Daniel R. Smith, Douglas W. Smith and Randell L. Smith, one daughter-in-law, Patricia M. Smith (Daniel) and three brothers, George Miller, Leonard Miller and Bernard Miller.

Eugene Ernest Hallett

hallett-eugeneGREAT BEND — Eugene Ernest Hallett, 84, died Feb. 16, 2017, at his home in Great Bend. He was born Jan. 6, 1933, at Rush Center, the son of Ernest Glen and Zelma Mae (Moore) Hallett. He married Carol E. Ochs Sept. 22, 1956, at LaCrosse, Kansas. He was a maintenance worker at the Mullergren Plant for 35 years and a lifelong farmer at Rush Center. He was a resident of Great Bend. Mr. Hallett was a United States Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Hallett was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Carol E. Hallett, of the home; one son, Eugene Allen Hallett of Merriam; three daughters, Connie Rathbun and husband Wayne of Great Bend; Michelle Schwager and husband Ronnie of Hoisington; and Renea Moore and husband Craig of Pawnee Rock; three sisters, Lois Holopirek, McPherson, Norma Kelley of Lawrence, and Charlotte Peters of LaCrosse; one sister-in-law, Lila Hallett of Rush Center; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Lloyd Hallett; and one sister, Dotty Kober.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home, with the Rev. Adam D. Wutka officiating. Berniece Kay “Berni” Funk

funk-berniOTIS — Berniece Kay “Berni” Funk, 63, died Feb. 15, 2017, at her home, rural Otis. She was born Oct. 6, 1953, at Ness City, the daughter of Frank and Albertina (Flax) Fehrenbach. She married Randall Lee “Randy” Funk June 7, 1987, on the family farm.  He died September 2004. A long time Otis area resident, she owned and operated Berni’s Country Beauty Salon. She enjoyed gardening, and spending time with her dogs, family and customers.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Guertin and his wife Raylene of Galatia and Robert Funk of Galatia; two daughters, Christine Marshall and Michael Knehans of Wellington, and Sandy Sommers and her husband Don of Great Bend; two sisters, Rose Mary Wagner of Ransom and Janet Nottingham of Douglass; seven grandchildren, Kristin, Robert, Alexis, Blayz, Danielle, Amelia and Greg; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Albertina Fehrenbach; and one brother, Michael Fehrenbach.

Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Feb. 20, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home with the Rev. Dick Ogle officiating. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials have been established with the Berni Funk Funeral Expense Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Kevin Lynn Habiger

habiger-kevinGREAT BEND — Kevin Lynn Habiger, 44, died unexpectedly Feb. 9, 2017, at Wichita. He was born June 27, 1972 at Great Bend, the son of Sylvester “Bud” and Sandra (Brougher) Habiger. He was a 1991 graduate of Great Bend High School. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, boating, scouting and a variety of other activities with friends and family. After graduating from high school, he obtained a commercial driver’s license and worked in the trucking and transport business. He moved to Wichita where he was employed most recently in shipping and order fulfillment for Amazon in nearby Coffeyville.

Survivors include his father, Sylvester “Bud” Habiger of the home; three brothers, Kerry Habiger and wife Julie of Los Alamos, N.M., Kenyon Habiger and wife Kelley of Great Bend, and Karl Habiger and wife Theresa of Great Bend, three nephews and one niece.

A private family service will be at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to American Diabetes Association, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Alfred M. Reichuber

reichuber-alfred-obitGREAT BEND — Alfred M. Reichuber, 96, died Feb. 17, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. He was born Feb. 27, 1920, at Odin, the son of Sebastian and Wilhelmina (Huslig) Reichuber. He married Leona Antonia Stoss May 15, 1946, at Olmitz.  She died March 13, 2015. A lifetime area resident, Mr. Reichuber was a carpenter. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Reichuber was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

Survivors include two sons, Ralph Reichuber and his wife Brenda of Great Bend, and Melvin Reichuber and his wife Carolyn of St. Paul, Minn.; four grandchildren, Ashley Reifschneider, Rob Liles, Brad Reichuber and Courtney Reichuber; and seven great-grandchildren, Cody Liles, Drew Liles, Cooper Liles, Hayden Liles, Maci Reifschneider, Brody Reifschneider and Fox Reichuber. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Linda Kay Reichuber; three brothers, Leo Reichuber, Arnold Reichuber Ed Reichuber; and three sisters, Marie Reichuber, Amelia Hertach and Loyola Meitner-Steiner.

Donna Jean Schrepel

GREAT BEND — Donna Jean Schrepel, 66, died Feb. 14, 2017, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson. She was born June 6, 1950 at Manitowoc, Wisc., the daughter of Norman and Gertrude (Riesterer) Trinka. She married Alvin Frederick Schrepel, Jr., May 31, 1969, at San Diego, Calif. A Great Bend resident since 1974, coming from San Diego, Calif., Mrs. Schrepel was Jefferson School lunch room manager for Unified School District 428. She collected elephants.

Survivors include her husband, Alvin Frederick Schrepel, of the home; two sons, Alvin F. Schrepel III and his wife Heather of Olathe, and Jon Schrepel of Great Bend; three sisters, Linda Tatman of Great Bend, Lisa Niethamer of Topeka, and Laura Jeno of Topeka; one brother, Ted Trinka of Hoisington; and two grandchildren, Alyson Schrepel and Avery Schrepel. She was preceded in death by step-father, Kenneth Jeno; one brother, Rick Trinka; one sister, Sandra Trinka; and grandson, Tyler Schrepel.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Don Paden officiating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery North.
