Ruby Manweiler

Ruby Elaine Manweiler (Nuss), went to her heavenly home on February 5, 2017.  Ruby was brought in this earthly world by her father at their home in the Wheatland Township, Barton County, Kansas. She graduated from Great Bend High School in 1951.

Ruby then married the love of her life, Larry M. Manweiler on June 1, 1952, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend.

They resided in Hoisington, Kansas, where they raised their four children, Gene, Kathy, Diana, and Jerry.

Ruby was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, where she was the past treasurer, was active in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, was past president and secretary of the LWML, and past secretary of Zone 12 LWML, was in the church choir. She taught the Bible to young people for 30 years; and was teacher of the Women’s Tuesday Afternoon Bible Study. She also organized the Young Women’s Group of LWML and the Prayer Shawl Ministry.

She had also been the past den leader for the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scout Brownies, was a member of the Tri-N Bridge Club and Wednesday Bridge Club, and was on the Board of Directors for the Hoisington Food Bank. She recently was named Grand Marshall of the Hoisington Labor Day Parade in 2016.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, Reinhold and Amalia (Mollie) Nuss, her husband Larry M. Manweiler, her seven brothers, LeRoy, Ervin, Roland, Clarence, Gerhardt, Ray and Wilbur, and her three sisters Josephine Nuss Sutton, Berneice Nuss Hillman, and Irene Ruth Nuss Ledford, and one daughter-in-law, Therese D. Manweiler.

She is survived by her children Gene A. Manweiler (Paula) of Hoisington, Kathryn L. Smith (Martin) of Wisconsin, Diana K. Hilburn (Steve) of Goddard, and Jerry W. Manweiler (Julie) of Lawrence. Ruby had nine grandchildren; Tracy D. Manweiler Engerman, Katrina Amalia Theiler Coffelt, Brooke Anne Manweiler, Jessica Elise Smith, Steven Christopher Hilburn, Johannah Adrian Smith Hurley, Ashley Nicole Hilburn Hayes, Rebekah Mattae Manweiler, and Rachel Elise Violet Manweiler.

She has three great grandchildren, Owen Jack Shepheard, Molly Ryan Engerman and Cade Michael Hurley. She also had four step-grandchildren and seven step great-grandchildren.

Friends may call 1 to 8 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. and a Prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 9, 2017, at Concordia Lutheran Church, Hoisington.  Burial will follow at Hoisington Cemetery.

OBITUARY INFORMATION

Elsie married Lawrence Meek, August 31, 1947, at Hutchinson. They were later divorced. She later married Arthur “Bud” Clowers July 14, 1979, at St. John, KS.  He died in 1984.

A Holyrood resident since 2012, Elsie had been a 54 year Claflin resident, and a Plainville resident prior to that.  She was a retired Farmers and Merchants Bank of Claflin employee, and a member of the Claflin Methodist Church, Dorcus Doers ladies church group, and volunteered as a Pink Lady at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Lois Hileman, one brother, Cecil Rose, and by a grandson, Zachary Albert.

Hartwell Cadow Flint, III

flint-hartwellGREAT BEND — Hartwell Cadow “Chip” Flint, III, 54, died Feb. 6, 2017, at his home, Great Bend. He was born July 16, 1962, at Natchez, Miss., the son of Hartwell Cadow and Donna Jean (Seitz) Flint, Jr. He was married to Margaret Quintero from 1996 to 2006. She survives. A Great Bend resident most of his life, Mr. Flint was a sales and rental associate for Waters True Value.

Other survivors include one daughter, Kiley Flint of Great Bend; his mother and step-father, Donna and Ronald Jean Van Horn of Wichita; one sister, Kay Smith and her husband Brad of Wichita; and father-in-law, Joe Quintero of Lewis.

Private family services will be held. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials have been established with Hartwell Flint Funeral Expense Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Barbara L. Ellis

ellis-barbaraGREAT BEND — Barbara L. Ellis, 75, died Feb. 5, 2017, at her home in Great Bend. She was born Jan. 5, 1942, at Great Bend, the daughter of Clifford John and LaVerne Louise (Lewis) Ellis. She was a lifetime Great Bend resident. She enjoyed flowers, bird watching, her great-grandchildren, and traveling, especially to Mardi Gras. She was dietary manager for Great Bend Manor for 25 years, retiring in 2004.

Survivors include one daughter, Tammy Payne and her husband Jack of Great Bend; one brother, Johnnie C. Ellis of Parsons; three sisters, Lucy Kennedy of Hutchinson; Janice M. Lohr of Great Bend, and Becky Gilliland of Great Bend; two grandchildren, Jacklyn Dougherty and husband Brian and Susan Zuniga and husband Edward; and eight great-grandchildren, Jason Payne, McKinley Payne, McKenzie Payne, Garrett Schmidt, Sage Schmidt, Cole Schmidt, Daniel Zuniga and Blaze Jacobs. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence E. Ellis and David F. Ellis; and two sisters, Jo Ann Ellis and Elizabeth Stambaugh.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Schumacher officiating. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. 20170205_125436Great Bend—Lois Ann Anderson, 67, died Feb. 5, 2017, at her home in Great Bend. She was born Nov. 10, 1949, at Cadillac, Mich., the daughter of William and Mildred (Gable) McQuiston. She worked for Great Bend Housing Authority as a Housing Supervisor. Lois has been a Great Bend resident since 1993, coming from Grapevine, Texas.

Survivors include her mother, Mildred Godin of Pawnee Rock; daughters Shannon Fish and Christopher Kelso of Great Bend, Tracy Brewer and husband Jay of Prattville, Ala., and Chris Mead and husband Terry of Pawnee Rock; sisters, Jerrie Breese and Charles Chism of Ellinwood, Jolene McQuiston of Great Bend; brother, Robert Macias and wife Theresa of Amarillo, Texas; grandchildren, Natasha Brewer, Colby Mead, Brandi Mead, Brooklyn Mead, Justin Fish, Bailey Fish, Keara Moore and Liam Kelso; and best friend, Linda Gritten. She was preceded in death by her father, John Godin, and brother, Michael McQuiston.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend with the Rev. Dr. Scott V. Solether officiating. Inurnment will follow at Pawnee Rock Cemetery. Wanda Sue Ybarra

Wanda Sue Ybarra, age 67 years, lifelong Great Bend, Kansas resident, passed away at her Great Bend home early on Friday morning, February 3, 2017 after a lengthy illness.   Wanda was born on February 22, 1949 at Great Bend, Kansas to Gilbert Clyde and Alma Elvira (Ochs) Scheuerman.   She attended school in the Ellinwood School District at Ellinwood, Kansas and was united in marriage to Peter Paul Ybarra on December 30, 1975 at Miami, Oklahoma.   Wanda worked as Supervisor of Facilities Management at the Barton County Courthouse in Great Bend for 29 years, retiring on August 1st of 2016.   She attended the Heritage Baptist Church in Great Bend, Kansas.   Wanda enjoyed going to Lake Wilson and spending time with her family – especially her grandchildren.

Wanda is survived by her husband, Peter P. Ybarra of Great Bend, Kansas; three sons:   Ricky Jo (and his wife, Sherri) Staab, Shawn Paul Ybarra, and Shannon Dean Ybarra, all of Great Bend, Kansas; two step-sons:   Stan Ybarra and Eric Ybarra, both of Wichita, Kansas and one step-daughter, Mistina Miller of Enid, Oklahoma; five grandchildren:   Shaylin Ybarra, Alaunuh Ybarra, Dallas Staab, Dalton Staab, and Dillon Adams; two brothers:   David (and his wife, Stephanie) Scheuerman and Tim (and his wife, Elizabeth) Scheuerman, both of Great Bend, Kansas; one sister, Juanita (and her husband, Bill) Gann of Great Bend, Kansas.   She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers:   Thomas and Gilbert Scheuerman, and two sisters:   Catherine McQuade and Sherry Scheuerman.

Cremation has been chosen. magie-roseGREAT BEND — Rose Eva Magie, 94, died Jan. 28, 2017, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. She was born Feb. 8, 1922, at Claflin, the daughter of Joseph E. and Anna (Wolfel) Reif. She married Dale Magie May 22, 1992, at Great Bend.  He died May 1, 1996. A Great Bend resident since 1978, coming from Ellsworth, Mrs. Magie worked for Essex.

Mrs. Magie was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Altar Society and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary #3111, all of Great Bend.

She is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Reif and Joseph Reif; and five sisters, Mary Oberle, Sophia Feist, Margaret Hirsh, Anna Reif and Theresa Boman.

Altar Society Rosary will be at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home. OBITUARY INFORMATION

Ike married Jacqueline Ann King December 18, 1948, at Plymouth Congregational Church, Lincoln, Nebraska.

Ike was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters.  Ike’s educational background included a B.S. in Economics from University of Nebraska, Hospital Administration Certificate from the University of Colorado, and Oil and Gas Leasing Certificates from the Institute for Energy Development of Dallas and Houston.

From 1949 to 1951, Ike was a salesman for Seiler Surgical Equipment Company, Omaha, Nebraska.  From 1951 to 1956, Ike served as the hospital administrator for Hoisington Lutheran Hospital, being the original organizer of Lutheran Hospitals of Kansas.  Ike operated I.C. Walter Enterprises, Inc., being involved in the Dairy Queen system for 55 years throughout the state of Kansas.  He built Town and Country Supermarket, Hoisington, in 1956, and continued operation until 1976, and was active in production and leasing in oil operations, and farming.

Ike served on the Hoisington Chamber of Commerce, Kansas Association of Dairy Queen Operators, Kansas Dairy Queen Association, Mid-American Economic Development Commission, Hoisington Economic Developments, Landmark Savings and Loan Board, Kansas State Blue Cross/Blue Shield Board, Hoisington Lutheran Hospital Board, Hoisington Nursing Home Board, Cobb Cable T.V. System Board, United Fund Board, Barton County Red Cross Board, Barton County Community College Endowment Association, Bethany Endowment Fund Drive Board.  He was Hoisington “Man of the Year” recipient in 1970 and was a Republican Committeeman for Hoisington.  He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, Hoisington, where he served as chairman and board of elders, Kiwanis, American Legion Post 286, V.F.W., Williams Fund, Beta Sigma Psi Fraternity, Mid-Kansas Economic Development, Great Bend Petroleum Club, and was an Honor Flight participant,  .

James S. Bowers

bowers-jamesGREAT BEND — James S. “Jim” Bowers, 80, died Jan. 22, 2017, at his home in Great Bend. He was born Aug. 27, 1936, at Herington, the son of Henry Verle and Estella (Engel) Bowers. He married Sharon Fisher April 26, 1959, at Abilene. A Great Bend resident since 1962, coming from Oberlin, Mr. Bowers was chief engineer for KCKT and KSNC-TV.

Mr. Bowers was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church. He was a Boy Scout leader for Troop #184 and recipient of the Silver Beaver Award.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Bowers of the home; three sons, Barry Bowers and his wife Monica of Great Bend, Robert Bowers and his wife Jane of Ottawa, and Mark Bowers and his wife Shirley of Great Bend; one daughter, Shelley Chrivia and her husband Joe of Lupton, Mich.; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, David Bowers, and one sister, Claire Bowers.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 27, 2017, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Great Bend with the Rev. Adam D. Wutka. Inurnment will be in Great Bend Cemetery North, Great Bend. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials have been established with St. Mark Lutheran Church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
