birt-russel-obitGREAT BEND – Pvt. Russel Irvin Birt, 21, died Jan. 17, 2017, at Rosepine, La. He was born March 10, 1995, at Dalhart, Texas, the son of Kenneth A., Sr. and Donna M. (Mendenhall) Birt. He was a private in the United States Army.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and working on his pickups.

Survivors include his parents, Kenneth and Donna Birt of Great Bend; and two brothers, Shawn Birt of Gove, and Kenneth Birt, Jr. of Norton, Texas.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home with Lt. David Martin, Army Chaplain, officiating. Burial will be in Golden Belt Memorial Park, Great Bend, with military honors by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Ruth L. White

white-ruthGREAT BEND — Ruth L. White, 91, died Jan. 22, 2017, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. She was born Dec. 4, 1925, at Great Bend, the daughter of Arthur A. and Mary Ellen (Keenan) Campbell. She married William A. White Jan. 11, 1947, at St. John.  He died Oct. 10, 2005. A lifetime Great Bend resident, Mrs. White was a homemaker.

She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Altar Society. Besides being a loving and caring wife and mother, she enjoyed baking, cards, dominoes, marbles, needlework and word search puzzles. She enjoyed having her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren around and always made sure to take great care of them when they visited. She was the happiest when her family was around her.

Survivors include three sons: Steven White and his wife Linda of Great Bend, Gary White and his wife Michelle of Ellinwood, and Craig White and his wife Cindy of Great Bend; one daughter, Barbara Cowen and her husband Richard of Still River, Mass.; four sisters: Dorothy Greer of Bristow, Okla., Katherine Campbell of Great Bend, Patricia Gerstenkorn of Great Bend, and Mary Ellen Nieman of Chino Hills, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Heather, Dianna, Kristoffer, Chad, Deborah, Trina, Darren and Kyle; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Henry “Bud” Campbell; and three sisters, Delores Maggiora, Grace Schneweis and Mary Drake.

Altar Society Rosary will be at 4 p.m. and Vigil service will be at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 26, 2017, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery. Daniel Lee Bachman

Daniel Lee “Dan” Bachman, 59, died January 21, 2017 at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington.  He was born September 22, 1957, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of Albert and Peggy (Churchman) Bachman.  Dan moved to Claflin in 1969 from Hutchinson.  He graduated from Claflin High School in 1975.

A resident of the Susank area since 1986, he was a jacket line operator at Superior Essex for over 35 years.  Daniel was a motorcycle enthusiast including drag racing.

On August 18, 1979, he married Marie Grossardt in Claflin.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Marie Bachman; two brothers, Bruce Bachman and wife Betty of Hutchinson, Tom Bachman and wife Rosie of Lakin, Kansas; and a sister, Barbara Underwood and husband Mike of Tribune, Kansas; many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert & Peggy Bachman.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 26, 2017, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington, with the Rev. Betty Bachman presiding.  Friends may sign the book 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Wednesday at the funeral home.  Cremation has taken place.  Family requests all those attending to wear casual attire, jeans and leathers welcome. Bill was a 1957 graduate of Hoisington High School, then furthered his education at Emporia State University, graduating in 1962.

Bill taught senior and general sciences on the secondary level in Wright City and Warrenton, MO. Bill later worked for McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft, St. Louis, and later transferred to Amoco Petroleum, Oklahoma City.  He returned to Barton County in 1974 to work for Mo-Pacific Railroad, obtaining locomotive engineer status, retiring in 1997.  He was an avid sports enthusiast, especially football, and took pride in being a self-taught photographer.  He also enjoyed relaxing in his spare time at his cabin at Tuttle Creek.

Ray married Patricia J. Freeburg July 27, 1963 at Peace Lutheran Church, rural Albert, KS.

From 1963 to 1980, Ray was a project manager for Allied-Shaffer and H.C. Smith Construction.  He served as an electrical superintendent on the Titan II and MX Peace Keeper Missiles. During that time Ray and Pat had lived in Warrensburg, MO, Cheyenne, WY, Grand Forks, ND, Rapid City, SD, Great Falls, MT, Salt Lake City, UT, Burney, CA, and Sedalia, MO.  Ray had been a Hoisington resident since 1980, retiring and moving to Holyrood in 2009.  Ray also served as a branch manager for the Ellsworth COOP and the Great Bend COOP in Boyd.  He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, rural Albert, and was a longtime farmer and stockman.

bloyd-steveGREAT BEND — Steven J. Bloyd, 75, died Jan. 18, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. He was born Dec. 19, 1941, at Fairbury, Neb., the son of Donald E. and Valentine (Dickerson) Bloyd. He married Judy Hilger July 14, 1964, at Lakin.  He was an electrician for ElPaso Corporation. Mr. Bloyd was a United States Army veteran. He enjoyed golf and Kansas State University sports.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Bloyd of the home; one son, David Bloyd and his wife Michelle of Wichita; one daughter, Connie Bahan and her husband Steve of Ellsworth; one brother, Larry Bloyd and his wife Patsy of Las Animas, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Nicole, Corey, Braden, Taylor, Benjamin, Porter and Carson; and one great-grandson, Zach. He was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Lee Bloyd.

Memorial service will be at 10 a.m., Monday, Jan. 23, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home with John Thomas officiating. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials have been established with Heartland Cancer Patient Care and Support Endowment Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

lunsford-jeanineGREAT BEND — Jeanine Lunsford, 78, died Jan. 18, 2017, at Via Christi St.Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita. She was born June 5, 1938, at Enid, Okla., the daughter of Frank B. and Audrey Fern (Whitaker) Cluster. She married Larry Dean Lunsford June 9, 1956, at Great Bend.  He died March 14, 2013. A lifetime Great Bend resident, she was owner and operator of Great Bend Dairy Queen. She enjoyed painting and antiquing.

Survivors include one daughter, Candi Lunsford of Seward; one grandson, Zak Rabenseifner; and one sister-in-law, Virginia Lunsford of Rapid City, S.D. She was preceded in death by one sister, Colleen McCoy.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2017, at First United Methodist Church in Great Bend, with the Rev. Lenard Maxwell officiating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery. Franklin Winston Nelson

BURDETT – Franklin Winston Nelson (Lynn) 74, passed away January 17, 2017, at Aberdeen Village in Olathe, Kansas. He was born November 25, 1942 in Ness City, KS, the son of Albert & Irene Nelson.

Lynn met Sharon, his wife of 53 years at Ft Hays State University. The couple moved to Burdett, Kansas after college where Lynn had a life long career in insurance & banking. Lynn enjoyed music, spending time at the lake, hunting, & traveling. He was an avid pilot with a great love of flying. He would often joke that he could sniff his way to an airport where he liked to watch planes take off and land. He loved God, his family and his community and he had a deeply generous heart.

Lynn was the CEO of The Burdett State Bank, served on the Board of Governors for the Kansas Bankers Association and was appointed and served as the Banking Commissioner of the State of Kansas under Governor Bill Graves. He also became certified as an Emergency Medical Technician, founded the Burdett EMT service and served as a Deputy Sheriff for Pawnee County.

Lynn is survived by: wife Sharon R. Nelson of Topeka, KS; daughter Julie Nelson Meers of Kansas City, MO; son, Kelly R. Nelson of Shawnee, KS; brother Dan Nelson, Tuscon, AZ; sister Theda Nelson, KS; 3 grandchildren, Katherine Meers of Seattle, WA, Garrett Nelson & Chloe’ Nelson of Shawnee, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Alma, Beulah, Bernice, Mildred & Albert.
A visitation will be held at the Burdett United Methodist Church on Friday, January 20, 2017 from 1 – 3 pm. A graveside service will be held at the Brown’s Grove Cemetery in Burdett at 3:30pm Friday, with Pastor Brad McCoy presiding.

Prior to that, he taught at LaCrosse High School, LaCrosse, KS, and was a machinist for C&W Machine (SEMCO), Great Bend.  He was a member of Cheyenne Twisters Square Dance Club, GBNEA, KNEA, and a life member of NEA.

She was born Oct. 14, 1924, at Ellinwood, the daughter of Jacob and Pauline (Wess) Melcher. She married Frank Tinkel, Jr., June 21, 1948, at Ellinwood.  He died Dec. 11, 1985. A Great Bend resident since 1974, coming from Albert, Mrs. Tinkel was a homemaker.

Mrs. Tinkel was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and the Altar Society, Great Bend.

Survivors include one son, Darrell Tinkel and his wife Carma of Great Bend; two daughters, Judy Rabenseifner and her husband Bernie of Great Bend, and Cheryl Richardson and her husband Chuck of Great Bend; six grandchildren, Troy Daubert, Travis Daubert, Randy Tinkel and wife Jill, Stacey Cook and husband Brian, Amy Stein and husband Troy and Becky Holliday; 12 great-grandchildren, Evan Daubert, Miya Daubert, Megyn Daubert, Aubrey Cook, Addison Cook, Ashleigh Cook, Aaron Stein, Tyler Stein, Sydney Stein, Korbin Tinkel, Elise Holliday and Anna Holliday; and her faithful friend, Koda.
