Leon A. Werth

werth-leonGREAT BEND — Leon A. Werth, 81, died Jan. 16, 2017, at Almost Home, Inc., Great Bend. He was born Feb. 10, 1935, at Schoenchen, the son of Adolph and Serbina (Zimmerman) Werth. He married Joan E. Werth Aug. 30, 1955, at Schoenchen. A Great Bend resident since 1963, coming from Pratt, Mr. Werth was owner and operator of Leon Werth Plumbing, Heating and Air.

Mr. Werth was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council #862, both of Great Bend.

Survivors include his wife, Joan E. Werth of the home; three sons, Keith Werth and his wife Ann of Great Bend, Neil Werth and his wife Fran of Great Bend, and Kurt Werth and his wife Dionne of Cimarron; three daughters, Colleen Kohls and her husband Doug of Great Bend, Michelle Schenkel and her husband Todd of Topeka, and Denise Thole and her husband Tony of Olathe; one brother, Duane Werth of Albuquerque, N.M.; 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ron Werth and infant Leslie Werth; and one sister, Marva Klaus.

Vigil Service with Knights of Columbus Rosary will be at 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 20, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Ted Stoecklein celebrating. Glenn O’Dell Schuster

Glenn O’Dell Schuster, 82, a loving husband, father, and grandfather, died January 14, 2017, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. He was born February 8, 1935, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of William George and Fern Evelyn (Wyer) Schuster.
Glenn graduated from Great Bend High School in 1953. He then spent 20 years serving in the United States Air Force, mostly overseas. He retired on November 1, 1974, as a Master Sergeant.
A Hoisington resident since 1991, Glenn worked for Superior Essex where he was the maintenance supervisor until his retirement in 1995.
Glenn was in the Boy Scouts growing up. He participated in the Relay for Life, and was a member of the Air Force Sergeant Association and the Retired Enlisted Association.
He was an avid woodworker, and there wasn’t any job that he couldn’t do. He also enjoyed traveling in his RV with his wife Lois.
On Nov. 7, 1961, he married Betty Lou Nichols in Wichita Falls, Texas. They later divorced. He then married Lois B. Johnson on July 6, 1991, in Hoisington, Kansas.
Glenn was revered as a man of honor, integrity and respect by his peers, friends and family; welcoming those into his fold and taking them under his wing.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Lois Schuster; four children, Carrie Heiderscheit and husband Jerrie of Hutchinson, Beverly Schuster of Lawrence, Diana Pekarek Schuster of Garnett, and Bonita Vasquez and husband Steven of Claflin; four brothers, Billy Schuster and wife Wilma of Great Bend, Carl Schuster and wife Virginia of California, Eddie Schuster and wife Marcella of Omaha, Nebraska, and Jim Culver of Branson, Missouri; seven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, William George Schuster; mother, Fern Colver; brother, Louis Schuster; and a sister, Cheryl Culver.
Memorial service will be 3 p.m., Friday, January 20, 2017, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with Pastor Don Paden presiding. Burial will follow in Great Bend Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the United States Air Force Honor Guard. Friends are welcome to join the family at a luncheon that will be served at noon, prior to the service, at First United Methodist Church. Friends may sign the book today until Friday, with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. There will be no viewing, as cremation has taken place. Family requests all those attending to wear casual attire. Thomas Joe Rose, Sr.

Thomas Joe “Tom” Rose, Sr., 73, died January 16, 2017, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. He was born September 11, 1943, in Denver, Colorado, the son of Harry and Ora (Reiss) Rose. Tom graduated from Burlington High School, Burlington, Iowa. He then served in the United States Army.
Tom was a resident of Hoisington since 1988, moving from the Gorham and Russell area. He was a longtime employee of the oil field, working in many aspects. He retired in 2009.
Tom was an avid reader, fisherman, and family man and passed these qualities on to his loved ones. He was known to give his opinion, but loved to make people laugh, either starting a conversation with a joke or ending it with one.
On June 6, 1966, he married Kathleen Pooley in Luray, Kansas.
He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Kathy Rose; four sons, Tom Rose, Jr. and wife Sue, Kerry Rose and wife Tina, Kevin Rose and wife Erica, all of Hoisington, and Tim Rose and wife Robin of Missouri; 25 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, Harry Rose, Jr., Robert Rose, and Michael Harger.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, January 19, 2017, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, with Reverend Don Fisher presiding. Burial will follow in Hoisington Cemetery. Friends may call 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Brian Lee Bailey

Brian Lee Bailey, 44, died January 14, 2017, at his home in Hoisington. He was born June 4, 1972, in Great Bend, Kansas, the son of Verlin and Rita (Rowley) Bailey.
Brian graduated from Hoisington High School in 1990 and attended Barton County Community College. He worked for BOC Gases in Otis until he had to retire in 2002 following an injury.
He is survived by a daughter, Adison Rien Rippie of Hoisington; father, Verlin Bailey of Great Bend; mother, Rita Bailey of Hoisington; uncles and aunts, Jerry and Sally Rowley of Overland Park, Sister Janet Rowley of Wichita, John and Judy White of Garden City, and Raymond Rowley of Phoenix, Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Elsie Bailey and Russell and Esther Rowley; and an uncle, Charles Bailey.
Vigil with Rosary will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Elizabeth A. “Liz” Stambaugh

stambaugh-lizGREAT BEND — Elizabeth A. “Liz” Stambaugh, 76, died Jan. 15, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. She was born July 4, 1940, in Barton County, the daughter of Clifford John and LaVerne Louise (Lewis) Ellis. She married Monte Gene Stambaugh March 19, 1959, at Ellinwood. A Great Bend resident since 1958, Mrs. Stambaugh worked for the Barton County Clerk’s Office and was a bookkeeper and worked in parts for Hugo’s Repair.

Survivors include her husband, Monte Gene Stambaugh of the home; one son, Monte Gene Stambaugh II and his wife Cindi of Great Bend; two daughters, Jean Peter and her husband Gary of Hobbs, N.M., and Leslie Helsel and her husband Gerry of Great Bend; one brother, Johnnie C. Ellis of Parsons; four sisters, Lucy Kennedy of Hutchinson, and Barbara L. Ellis, Janice M. Lohr and Becky Gilliland, all of Great Bend; five grandchildren, Orion Peter, Erin Burnett, Cody Helsel, Jaimie Stambaugh and Randi Stambaugh; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence E. Ellis and David F. Ellis; and one sister, Jo Ann Ellis.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 20, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home with the Rev. Jon Brudvig officiating. Burial will be in Lakin-Comanche District Cemetery, Ellinwood. Blanche A. Tomecek

tomecek-blanche-a-cropped-photoBlanche A. Tomecek, 87, Timken, Kansas, died Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas.

Mrs. Tomecek was born June 29, 1929, in rural Rush Center, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph and Anna (Oborny) Jecha. She was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas. A 1947 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Kansas, she was a homemaker and farm wife. After her children were raised, she was employed as a cook at the Rush County Nursing Home, La Crosse, Kansas, and Great Bend Manor, Great Bend, Kansas.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, St. Ann’s Altar Society, Holy Trinity Parish Council, and was a trustee for the Bohemian National Cemetery, all of Timken, Kansas. She also was a member of FCSLA (Catholic Workman), Western Fraternal Lodge Association, Joy Club, Faith Sharing, Walnut Valley Senior Center, Rush Center, Kansas, and a Cub Scout den mother.

On April 23, 1952, she married James E. Tomecek at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Timken, Kansas. He preceded her in death October 24, 1992.

Survivors include: two sons, Edward Tomecek, Timken, Kansas, and Frank Tomecek, Raytown, Missouri; four daughters, Julie Huber (Randy), La Crosse, Kansas, Martha Tomecek (Michel Cavigelli), Greenbelt, Maryland, Loretta Verhaeghe (Mel), Baldwin City, Kansas, and JoAnn Tomecek, Timken, Kansas; eight grandchildren, Justin Graff (Ashley), Anna Weinberg (Thomas), Noah Weinberg (Kaitlin), Brian Graff, Rebecca Verhaeghe, Kelsey Verhaeghe, Elizabeth Verhaeghe, and Katia Cavigelli; three great grandchildren, Emma Porras, Elliot Graff, and Graysen Porras; one brother in law, Edward Schwindt, La Crosse, Kansas; and one sister in law, Rosarie Jecha, La Crosse, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Charles Lee Tomecek; one son in law, John Graff; one brother, Edward Jecha; one brother in law, Harry Folkerts; and two sisters in law, Mary Folkerts, and Betty Schwindt.

Visitation will be Tuesday, January 17, 2017, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 P.M.

Church visitation will be Wednesday, January 18, 2017, from 9:30 A.M. to 10:20 A.M. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Timken, Kansas.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, January 18, 2017, at 10:30 A.M. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Timken, Kansas, with Father Matthew Kumi, Father Henry Baxa, Father Pascal Klein, and Father Charles Mazouch officiating. Interment will be in the Bohemian National Cemetery, Timken, Kansas.

debes-justinGREAT BEND — Justin A. Debes, 68, died Jan. 14, 2017, at his Great Bend residence. He was born May 23, 1948, at Hoisington, the son of Lawrence Ernest and Mary Margaret (Lewis) Debes. He married Linda Voth Nov. 25, 2011, at Great Bend. A lifetime area resident, Mr. Debes was co-owner and operator of Gibbs Electric. He was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict.

Mr. Debes was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Debes of the home; two step-sons, Curtis Eitel and his wife Kelly of Hamburg, Pa., and James Eitel and his wife Amber of Beckley, W.Va.; two step-daughters, Julie Connley and her husband Travis of Enid, Okla., and Stacie Haduick and her husband Jeff of White Deer, Texas; three brothers, Lawrence Debes of Larned, Kevin Debes of Pierce City, Mo., and Jim Debes of Great Bend; one sister, Germaine Carey of Monett, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jerome Debes and Mike Debes; and two sisters, Rita Bethel and Margaret Rose Campbell.

Vicki Lynn Weber

She was born Sept. 25, 1957, at Borger, Texas, the daughter of John and Bonnie “Maxine” (Underwood) Nicholson. She married Eugene Paul “Gene” Weber Nov. 18, 1978, at Great Bend.  He died September 2, 2010. A Great Bend resident since 1967, coming from Stinnett, Texas, Mrs. Weber was a secretary for Evansco, Inc., and worked in customer service for Dillon’s.

Vicki was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and Altar Society, both of Great Bend.

Survivors include two sons, Sgt. David A. Weber and his wife Kayleen of Great Bend, and Scott L. Weber and his wife Shawna of Great Bend; one daughter, Jody Erb and her husband Michael of Springfield, Mo.; two brothers, Leonard Nicholson and his wife Renee of Hoisington, and Jim Nicholson and his wife Judy of Longmont, Colo.; and nine grandchildren, Mari, Andrew, Sean, Randy, Janey, Grady, Emma, Aili and Opie. She was preceded in death by one brother, John Nicholson.

Marvin Benjamin Clawson

Born July 19, 1970, at Great Bend, he was the son of Marvin Benjamin, Jr. and Juanita (Leon) Clawson. A lifetime Great Bend resident, he was a retreader for Becker Tire & Treading Retread Plant.

Mr. Clawson was a member of NRA and Big Bend Bowhunters.

Survivors include his mother: Juanita Clawson of Great Bend; two sisters, Rhonda Marley of Great Bend, and Yvonne Clawson and companion Oliver DeLeon of Hoisington, aunts and uncles, Gaylen and Vickie Clawson of Great Bend, and Darlene Raab of Kinsley; six nieces and nephews, Abbey Marley, Jasmyn Marley, Kaylee Marley, David DeLeon, Jesse DeLeon and Steven DeLeon; and many other aunts, uncles and cousins.

Patrick J. Moos

moos-patrickGREAT BEND — Patrick J. Moos, 65, died Jan. 12, 2017, at his home in Great Bend. He was born Feb. 2, 1951, at Great Bend, the son of Robert V. and Helen (Denney) Moos. A lifetime Great Bend resident, he worked for B. J. Titan as a treater.

Survivors include his mother, Helen Moos of Great Bend; one daughter, Amy Brown and her husband Lonnie of Great Bend; three brothers, Robert W. Moos of Great Bend, David Moos of Wichita, and Michael Moos and his wife Stephanie of Ellinwood; two sisters, Toni Leiker and her husband Don of Great Bend, and Susan Cain and her husband Alan of Lyons; and one granddaughter, Tyler Brown.
