Geralyn “Gerry” M. Schartz, 57, died January 10, 2017, at Via Christi St. Francis, Wichita. She was born February 2, 1959, in Lyons, Kansas, the daughter of Alfonso “Al” and Ruth (Vilapando) Morales.
Gerry graduated from Lyons H.S. in 1977. A longtime Claflin resident, Gerry worked as the Library Aide at Central Plains High School, in Claflin. She had also worked for the US Postal Service and had ran her own daycare.
Gerry was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where she was active in the Altar Society and taught PSR classes for many years.
On January 15, 1983, she married Paul E. Schartz Jr. in Lyons, Kansas.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 34 years, Paul E. Schartz Jr.; and their three children, Christopher Schartz of Claflin, Melissa Puetz and husband Jacob of Goddard, Kansas, and Luke Schartz of Claflin; her parents, Al & Ruth Morales of Lyons, Kansas; five siblings, Debbie Christianson, Tony Morales, Alvina Lundquist, Max Morales, and Susie Morales; and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Vigil with Altar Society Rosary will be 7 p.m., Thursday, January 12, 2017, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Claflin. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday at the church, celebrated by Father Terrance Klein. Burial will follow in Claflin Cemetery. Friends may sign the book 9 a.m. to 5 p.m, at the funeral home. Casket will be closed per Gerry’s wishes. Charles E. Peterson

obit-photoGREAT BEND — Charles E. “Pete” Peterson, 89, died Jan. 7, 2017, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. He was born March 24, 1927, at Wichita, the son of Claude M. and Malnor Elizabeth (Coe) Peterson. He married Roberta Jean Wallis Dec. 4, 1949, at Tulsa, Okla.  She died October 19, 2005. A Great Bend resident since 1958, Mr. Peterson was an oilfield worker and later worked for Straub International, Great Bend Auto Supply and Parts, Inc. He was a United States Army Air Corps veteran, serving during World War II.

Survivors include one son, Michael E. Peterson and his wife Julie of Great Bend; two daughters Mindi Sue Shriver and her husband Joe of Arkansas City, and Melissa Rhea Brown and her husband Bradley of Great Bend; one sister, Sarah Elizabeth Hawkinson of Pennsylvania; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Private family inurnment has taken place in Great Bend Cemetery. Memorials in Mr. Peterson’s name have been established with St. Rose Health Center Endowment Fund for Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Betty Lou Mootz

mootz-bettyOTIS — Betty Lou Mootz, 90, died Jan. 10, 2017, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse. Born Feb. 9, 1926, in rural Barton County, she was the daughter of Herman L. and Pauline (Reinhardt) Brack. She was a graduate of Otis Rural High School, Otis and Salt City Business College, Hutchinson. She married Robert L. Mootz May 8, 1949 at Otis United Methodist Church, Otis.  He died July 13, 1992. A lifetime area resident, she and her husband operated B&B Sundries in Otis for many years. She also worked at the Otis State Bank and then Otis-Bison High School until her retirement. She volunteered at the high school until 2015.

Mrs. Mootz was an accomplished musician, playing the organ in area churches from the age of 15 until she moved into assisted living in August 2016. She played for countless weddings and funerals. She enjoyed her flower garden and working outside.

Mrs. Mootz was a member of Otis United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one nephew, Todd Greer of California; one niece, Becky Greer of California; special companions, Trixie and Lilly; and many cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 13, 2017, at Otis United Methodist Church in Otis, with Pastor Angie Vertz officiating. Burial will be in Otis Methodist Cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home. Debra Jean (Dreiling) Robinson

Larned- Debra Jean (Dreiling) Robinson, 53, passed away January 10, 2017 at Hays Medical Center.
She was born July 29, 1963 in Great Bend, KS, the daughter of Ralph and Anna Marie (Peg) Turner Dreiling. A longtime area resident she was an Assistant Manager at Pizza Hut of Larned.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include: one daughter, Danielle Thorne, Larned, KS., three brothers, Bill (Patty) Dreiling, Missoula, MT., Tim (Janelle) Dreiling, Lake Kiowa, TX. and Doug (Denise) Dreiling, Scott City, KS., three sisters, Nancy (Dan) Peschka, Lincoln, NE., Judy (Jim) Damm, Larned, KS., Diane Walker (Jerry Watkins) Larned, KS. and three grandchildren , Anthony, Alexis and Cubby.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Michael Dreiling and one sister Katherine Hoge.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday January 21, 2017 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned, with Father Warren Stecklein presiding. Visitation will be held Thursday and Friday, January 19th and 20th, from 9 am to 8 pm with a vigil service on Friday, January 20th at 7:00 p.m. at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Inurnment will be in the Larned Cemetery following the service.

Patricia Laura Moore

89, of Wichita, Ks passed away on January 6, 2017. She was born on December 10, 1927 to Tony and Mary Straub in Claflin, Ks. She was the last surviving sibling from her family of nine children; Ray Straub, Delores Schochtermeyer, Milton Straub, Bernadine Bridges, Katherine Straub, Vernon Straub, Walter Straub, and Dorothy Hamilton. Patty worked as a cook and housekeeper at Great Bend Medical Center for 46 years. She was well known for her positive attitude and strong work ethic. She was married to Roy Moore for 48 years. Besides working full time, she was also Roy’s primary care giver for many years, until his passing. Mrs. Moore is survived by her sons, William Moore (Betty) of Tucson, AZ, and Robert Moore (Suzette) of Wichita, KS; grandchildren, Bill Moore, Terry Moore (Tina), Kelsey Moore and Taylor Moore; great-grandchildren, Mikaela Moore, Bethany Moore, Josie Moore, Michael Moore, Jacob Moore, Annalise Moore; great-great-grandchildren, CJ Moore and Jordan Moore; her special Wichita nieces, Mame Dick and Mary Spade. She was a long time member of St. Rose of Lima in Great Bend, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and St. Catherine of Siena. Rosary will be officiated by Father PJ Voegeli, 7pm on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 and Funeral Mass will be 10:30, Wednesday, January 11, 2017, both at St. Catherine of Siena, 3636 N. Mary Elizabeth Boyle

boyle-maryGREAT BEND — Mary Elizabeth Boyle, 96, died Jan. 6, 2017, at her home with her family by her side. She was born on Sept. 6, 1920 at Wilsall, Mont., to Paul Vestal and Matilda (Allan) Smith. She was the fourth of five children born to this pioneering couple. She grew up in Salina on the family dairy farm.

Mrs. Boyle graduated from Stewart Beauty School in 1939 and continued to work as a beautician for Schwartz Salon of Beauty for 50 years. She later obtained her Senior Cosmetology License. She met her future husband Archer H. Boyle on a blind date in 1940 in Great Bend and they were married Jan. 14, 1945, in the Methodist parsonage in Great Bend. He died Feb. 20, 2005. During World War II, Mrs. Boyle volunteered with the USO in Great Bend.

Mrs. Boyle completed the Menninger Bible Study course, belonged to Etudian Club, participated in the Great Bend Great Books discussion groups for many years, and completed many courses in stained glass at Barton Community College. She designed and constructed many intricate Tiffany style lamps. She traveled widely in Europe, the United States and China. She was an avid supporter of Christian education and causes. She was particularly fond of the American Bible Society. She was a Rock Chalk fan of University of Kansas basketball.

Mrs. Boyle is survived by her daughter, Dr. Mary Ann Boyle, with whom she shared a home; one sister, Marjorie Lindstrom of Falun; four nieces, Rosalie Hawk of Salina, Barbara Bailey of Tulsa, Okla., Donna Woods of Lodi, Calif., and Linda Poh of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and two nephews, Dr. James Singleton of LaJolla, Texas, and Timothy Paul Trubey of Manhattan. She was preceded in death by one brother, Allan Smith; and two sisters, Alice Trubey and Faith Singleton.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home with the Rev. Sue Bishop officiating. Private family burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017 and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home. William K. McCoy

GREAT BEND — William K. “Bill” McCoy, 86, died Jan. 6, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. He was born Nov. 25, 1930, at Norton, the son of George and Margaret (Maher) McCoy. He married Betty J. Zimmerman May 5, 1962, at Great Bend.  A long-time Great Bend resident, coming from Norton, Mr. McCoy managed Burke’s Shoe Store and later owned and operated McCoy’s Shoe Store.

Mr. McCoy was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council #862, Great Bend. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, was loved by all and will be missed by many.

Survivors include his wife, Betty McCoy of the home; one son, Matt McCoy and his wife Camille of Lenexa; one daughter, Marisa Thier and her husband Michael of Great Bend; three grandchildren, Aaron Thier, Cade McCoy and Megan McCoy; two great-grandchildren, Delton Thier and Bryson Thier; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Bob McCoy, George McCoy and Charles McCoy; and three sisters, Maxine Wyatt, Ann Kluender and Rita McCoy.

Vigil service with Knights of Columbus Rosary will be at 7 p.m., Monday, Jan. 9, 2017, Bryant Funeral Home. GREAT BEND — Delores I. “Dee” Potts, 82, died Jan. 6, 2017, at River Bend Assisted Living, Great Bend. Born May 26, 1934, at Great Bend, she was the daughter of August Henry “Gus” and Ethel May (Doonan) Gagelman. She married Loy Eugene “Gene” Potts in July 1970 at Great Bend.  He died April 17, 2013. A lifetime Great Bend resident, Mrs. Potts was a teller for Security State Bank and First National Bank, Great Bend, and was a farm wife.

Mrs. Potts was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Cougar Booster Club.

Survivors include two sons, Brian Fischer of Great Bend, and Ronald Potts and his wife Connie of Ellinwood; four daughters, Dana Lloyd of Ellinwood, Cathy Oborny  and her husband Mark of Oklahoma City, Okla., Pam Maxwell of Topeka, and Brenda Tallman and her husband Harry of Indianapolis, Ind.; 14 grandchildren, Nakita Adame and husband Kino, Justin Fischer and wife Autumn, Chad Kaiser, Christa Chesmore and husband Charlie, Cami Thomas and husband Josh, Casey Taylor and husband Ronnie, Travis Oborny and wife Nicole, Gerrit Potts, Boyd Potts, Candace Halfhill and husband Emil, Derek Burkett, Jenna Czech and husband Steve, Brandon Tallman and wife Jessica, and Jerad Tallman and wife Tabitha; and 29 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Brenda Fischer; one sister, Eloise Belford; and one son-in-law David Lloyd.

Lucille Kathryn Hickel Branan

branan-lucileGREAT BEND — Lucille Kathryn Hickel Branan, 90, died Jan. 2, 2017, at Hopewest Hospice, Grand Junction, Colo. She was born Nov. 3, 1926, at Redwing, the daughter of Emil and Magdelena (Courange) Hickel. She married Leo A. Kaiser April 24, 1945, at Beaver, Kansas.  He died Sept. 29, 1961. She then married R. L. “Bob” Branan Jan. 15, 1973, at Claflin. He died Apr. 26, 2008. Mrs. Branan was a lifetime resident of Barton County.

She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, the Altar Society and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3111 Auxiliary, all of Great Bend.

Survivors include two sons, Gary Kaiser and his wife Jackie of Adams, Tenn., and Jim Kaiser and his wife Heidi of Grand Junction, Colo.; two step-sons, Thomas Branan of Claflin, and James P. Branan of Hutchinson; one step-daughter, Laurie Branan of Independence, Kan.; four grandchildren; and one step-grandson. She was preceded in death by one son, Eldon Kaiser; one brother, William Hickel; and two sisters, Eleanor Linsner and Helen Laudick.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home. Inurnment will be in Claflin Cemetery. Memorials have been established with Independent Township Library, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Sandra Lee Monroe

GREAT BEND — Sandra Lee “Sandy” Monroe, 71, passed away peacefully Dec. 14, 2016, at her family home of sixty years in Great Bend.  She was born Jan. 10, 1945 in Jefferson City, Mo., the daughter of Roy E. and Marie H. Lindsey.  A Great Bend resident since 1947 and graduate of Great Bend High School, Sandy was a custodian at First United Methodist Church for 23 years.  Previously she served as the director of Let’s Help soup kitchen and as a meat wrapper for Dillons in Topeka, KS.

Survivors include her sons; Nathan Monroe and his wife Kristen of San Diego, Calif., Kevin Monroe and his wife Johnnie of Pensacola, Fla., Ryan Monroe and his wife Megan of Dallas, Texas, and Cory Monroe (son/grandson) and his wife Rachel of San Francisco, Calif.  Sandy was also survived by three grandchildren, Cameron Monroe, Nicholas Monroe and Wesley StClair.  She was the proud great grandparent of Emma Monroe, Layla Monroe, Ellie Mae Monroe, Easton Monroe, Cameron Monroe Jr., Mellina StClair and Tyson StClair. Sandy was preceded in death by one brother, Roy Lindsey Jr., and three sisters, Joanne Johnson, Joyce Koons and Susie Snyder.

Sandy will be remembered for her faith and service to God and to First United Methodist Church, her love of family, especially for her children and grandchildren, her tireless efforts to help children in the community, her inspiring artistic ability and her work with animals.

Memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, at First United Methodist Church in Great Bend, with the Rev. Lenard Maxwell officiating. Graveside service to follow in Great Bend Cemetery. A memorial has been established for Noah`s Ark Preschool Scholarship Fund at First United Methodist Church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
