Bernadine Schultz

GREAT BEND — Bernadine Schultz, 67, died Jan. 4, 2017, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Born April 7, 1949 at Stockton, she was the daughter of Harold and Iola (Cahail) Schultz. A Great Bend resident since 1968, she was an LPN. She was a loving mother and grandmother.

Survivors include companion, Lynn Johnson; one son, Don Schindler and his wife Lisa of Newton; one sister, Sheryl Schilowsky and her husband Emery of Grand Island, Neb.; three grandchildren, Carson Schindler, Gage Riech and Gavin Riech. She was preceded in death by one son, Richard Schindler; one brother, Gary Schultz; and one sister, Rosali Reeves.

There will be no services. Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend, is in charge of arrangements.

Lawrence F. “Larry” Weiser

weiser-larry-obitGREAT BEND — Lawrence F. “Larry” Weiser, 97, passed away peacefully on Jan. 4, 2017, at his Great Bend residence. He was born Sept. 4, 1919, at Odin, the son of Rudolph J. and Mary Louise (Grellinger) Weiser. He was a 1939 graduate of Odin High School and then attended St. Joseph Military Academy, Hays, until he was drafted into the United States Army in the summer of 1941. He was a decorated World War II combat veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater and was involved in the liberation of the Philippine Islands in 1945. He returned home and married Leona Victoria Beck May 5, 1947, at Great Bend. She passed away July 14, 2011, after 64 years of marriage.

After returning home from military service, he along with brothers Bernard and Clem, founded Weiser Brothers Grocery in Great Bend. Mr. Weiser later owned and operated Weiser’s Gamble Store in Great Bend for 25 years, while maintaining his real estate license.

Mr. Weiser was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #862, American Legion Argonne Post 180, Veterans of Foreign Wars Morris-McFadden Post #3111 and Great Bend Realtors Association, all of Great Bend. He enjoyed sports of all kinds, including hunting, fishing and golf; but, playing, coaching and teaching baseball was his number one love. He was an avid University of Kansas basketball, football and baseball fan. He had a warm sense of humor and a great appreciation for the arts as a painter and guitar player.

Survivors include three daughters, Connie Weiser of Great Bend, Linda Barnes and her husband Bill of Wichita, and Patricia Harbaugh and Doug of Kansas City; three sons, Don Weiser and his wife Lynne of Salina, Michael Weiser and his wife Lexie of Salina, and Kent Weiser of Emporia; one brother, Al Weiser of Hayward, Wisc.; three sisters, Mary Ann Wassinger of Sun City, Ariz., Trudie Sturdy of Sun City, Ariz., and Kathleen “Katie” Reif of Wichita; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by six brothers, Nick Weiser, Rudy Weiser, Tony Weiser, Bernard Weiser, Clem Weiser and Herb Weiser.

Vigil Service with Knights of Columbus Rosary will be at 7 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home.  Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Jan. 9, 2017, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Don Bedore celebrating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery North, with military rites by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Connie Burke

burke-connieGREAT BEND – Consuelo “Connie” Rocha Burke, 82, died Jan. 2, 2017, at Trinity Manor, Dodge City. She was born Sept. 13, 1934, at Lewis, the daughter of Jose C. and Manuela (Munoz) Castaneda. She married Marion Lester “Les” Burke July 23, 1988, at Great Bend.  He died October 30, 2008. A Great Bend resident since 1953, Mrs. Burke was a bartender at Great Bend Petroleum Club. She has resided in Dodge City since 2008.

Mrs. Burke was a member of First Assembly of God, Great Bend.

Survivors include one son, Gregory Rocha and his wife Angie of Dodge City; one daughter, Susan Volkland of Dodge City; two step-sons, Lester Burke of Ellinwood, and Gary Burke of Great Bend; three step-daughters, Dana Abrams of Great Bend, Belinda Peters of Olmitz and Karla Alsup of Great Bend; two brothers, Pete Castaneda and his wife Julia of Lewis, and Nick Castaneda and his wife Rosalie of Lewis; one sister, Esther Mueller of Dodge City; sister-in-law, Angelina Castaneda of Lewis; four grandchildren, Daniel, Nichole, Gregory and Margarita; and seven great-grandchildren, Israel, Nicholas, Avel, Steven, Ivy, Gianni and Charlie. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Helen Rocha; one brother, Frank Castaneda, and one half-brother, Euesebio Guerrero.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017, at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Dwight Dozier. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery. Mary K. Mickle

Mary K. Mickle, age 76 years, of Hoisington, Kansas, passed away early on Monday morning, January 2, 2017 at the Sterling Presbyterian Manor in Sterling, Kansas.   Mary was born on March 26, 1940 at Larned, Kansas to Hugh and Ruby (Eckhoff) McDonald.   She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Wesley School of Nursing in Wichita, Kansas, and worked as a Registered Nurse for many years at various places in the area, including Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend, Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas, and retired after working many years at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington, Kansas.   She has been a Hoisington resident since 1976. Mary had a passion for photography, and also loved nature and all types of artwork.

Mary is survived by her life partner of 26 years, John Habiger of Bushton, Kansas; two sons:   Jim (and his wife, Cindy) Mickle of Hoisington, Kansas and John (and his wife, Jennifer) Mickle of Hoisington, Kansas; one daughter, Mary Ann (and her husband, Gilbert) Aguilera of Chase, Kansas; seventeen grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Kathleen (and her husband, Lloyd) Bolson of Brighton, Colorado and Donna Mitchell of Salt Lake City, Utah; several nieces and nephews.   She was preceded in death by her parents, one son Steve Mickle on September 16, 1995 and two brothers:   Leslie and Scott McDonald.

Cremation has been chosen. Memorial Services will be conducted by the family at 10:30 AM on Friday, January 6, 2017 at the First Street Church of God in Hoisington, Kansas with Pastor Dick Ogle officiating.   Inurnment will take place in the Hoisington Cemetery at a later date.   Memorial donations are designated to the First Street Church of God, Hoisington, Kansas. Lois May Hill

hill-loisLois May Hill, 90, died Jan. 1, 2017, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. Born Jan. 15, 1926, at Galatia, she was the daughter of Henry LaVern and Florence A. (White) Bryant. She married Glenn Earl Hill June 2, 1946, at Great Bend.  He died August 31, 2012. A Great Bend resident most of her life, coming from Galatia, Mrs. Hill was a bookkeeper for Montgomery Ward and the telephone office.

Mrs. Hill was a member of Heritage Baptist Church, Great Bend.

Survivors include one son, Dennis W. Hill and his wife Mildred of Great Bend; four grandchildren, Jennifer Elkins and her husband Troy, Allan E. Hill and his wife Donna, Brian Hill and Matthew Hill and his wife Jeanette; and two great-grandchildren, Kalen Hill and Emmalynn Elkins. She was preceded in death by one brother, Irven LaVern Bryant, one sister, Vivian A. Bryant, and one great-grandson, Kody Glenn Hill.

F. Duane Dugan

GREAT BEND — F. Duane Dugan, 90, died Jan. 1, 2017, at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. Born July 11, 1926, at Fort Scott, he was the son of Harry and Frances (Pellett) Dugan. He married Roberta Simpson Sept. 17, 1955, at Fort Scott.  A Great Bend, Kansas resident since January 1965, coming from Fort Scott, Mr. Dugan worked in law enforcement for 57 years. He was a United States Army veteran.

Mr. Dugan was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3111, American Legion Argonne Post 180, both of Great Bend, Kansas Peace Officers Association, National Rifle Association, and Kansas Sheriff’s Association.

Survivors include his wife, Roberta Dugan, of the home; one son, Craig Dugan and his wife Pam of Wichita; one daughter, Debra Kowalsky and her husband Kenny of Ellinwood; eight grandchildren, Chris Dugan, Aaron Goering, Adrienne Kripalani, Rachael Harvey, Lauren Ali, Andrew Tyson, Ian Goering and Keaton Goering; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Dana Dugan; and two brothers, Arthur Dugan and Keith Dugan.

David G. Zamarripa

David G. Zamarripa, 64, died December 30, 2016, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas. He was born December 19, 1952, in Edinburg, Texas, the son of Juan and Elisa (Gonzalez) Zamarripa. David graduated from Edinburg High School and then received his business accounting degree from the University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg, Texas. He served in the United States Army from 1972 to 1978.

David was a resident of Hoisington since 1994, moving from Edinburg, Texas. He worked in maintenance, first for Queen City Laundry in Mercedes, Texas, then working for E&F Plumbing in Hoisington, Great Bend Packing, and finally retired in 2007 from Redbarn Pet Products.
He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, and a former member of V.F.W. of Hoisington, and the Knights of Columbus.

On June 28, 1995, he married Irene Ramirez in Hoisington.

He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Irene Zamarripa; daughters, Nadya Martinez and husband Lamar of Edinburg, Texas, Tanya Williams and husband Eric of Kingsville, Texas; sons, Pedro N. Ramirez of South Bend, Ind., Ramiro Lozano III and wife Sarah (Mata) of Hoisington, Raul Lozano of Great Bend; 13 grandchildren, including, Lillian, Vanessa, Allayna, Chantelle, Dayton, and Dominyk; brother, Juan Zamarripa Jr. of Pharr, Texas, sister, Rosemary Yzaguirre of McAllen, Texas; niece, Diana Garza of McAllen, Texas; and a great niece and nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Juan and Elisa Zamarripa.

Rosary with Vigil will be 7 p.m., Monday, January 2, 2017, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, celebrated by Father Anselm Eke. Burial will follow in St. John Catholic Cemetery, with military honors conducted by Ft. Riley Honor Guard. Neil J. Gorney, age 55 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away at his home in Great Bend on Thursday afternoon, December 29, 2016.   Neil was born on February 10, 1961 in Bay City, Michigan to Melvin J. and Isabelle (Compton) Gorney.   A resident of Great Bend, Kansas for the past eight years, he worked as a fire and water damage Restoration Specialist for ServPro in Bay City, Michigan and later in Great Bend, Kansas, as well as ServiceMaster in Great Bend.   He also did residential painting in Great Bend. Neil thoroughly enjoyed fishing, camping, coin collecting, card games, throwing horseshoes, and cooking outdoors, but he loved spending time with Grandkids the most.

Neil is survived by two daughters: Shanade Gorney and Shaneil Gorney, both of Alamosa, Colorado; three grandchildren; two brothers:   Randy (and his wife, Terri) Gorney of Oswego, Kansas and Shawn (and his wife, Michelle) Neering of Essexville, Michigan; two sisters:   Joyce Carpenter (and her fiance’, Keith Cramer) of Moundville, Missouri and Phyllis Gorney (and her fiance’, Jim) of Bay City, Michigan; one sister-in-law, Deb Kroening of Albright Shores, Michigan; numerous nieces and nephews.   He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Shawneen Gorney on December 31, 2008, and one brother, Conrad “Skip” Kroening.

Jan Ogle

ogle-janHOISINGTON – Jan Ogle, 79, died Dec. 27, 2016, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. Born March 18, 1937, at Grant County, Ind., she was the daughter of Rev. Dr. Carl M. and Mary Frances (Deal) Poe. She married the Rev. C. DeLon Hales Nov. 1, 1957, at First Church of God in Chicago. He died Dec. 5, 1972. She then married the Rev. Richard E. “Dick” Ogle Sept. 22, 1973, at Great Bend.

A Great Bend area resident since 1973, Mrs. Ogle was an administrator for Kenwood Plaza at St. John, Leisure Homestead at Great Bend and Country Place at Hoisington. She was also family service coordinator at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home, leading many grief support groups, was executive secretary at Garden City Community College and a substitute teacher at Theoni School near Garden City.

She was a member of First Street Church of God, Hoisington and was former president of United Church Women and Young Adult Sunday School teacher. She was a published author, writing many articles for Birds N Bloom magazine and also grief recovery articles in many funeral service publications.

Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Dick Ogle, of the home; one son, the Rev. Dr. David Hales and his wife Ronda of Larned; and three daughters, Debbie Tarlton and husband Barry of Woodstock, Ga.; Janis Haneke and husband David of Savannah, Mo.; and Juli Ogle of Great Bend; one brother, Mark Poe and wife Sharon of St. Louis, Mo.; two sisters, Barbara Bartels and husband Harlan of Independence, Mo. and Carolyn Holbrook and husband Robert of Anderson, Ind.; and seven grandchildren, Luke Tarlton, Macy Tarlton, Toni Sue Hales, Adam Hales, Sarah Applebee, Jennifer Sackhoff and Talisha Dennison.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, Dec. 30, 2016, at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. Dr. David Hales officiating. Entombment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery Mausoleum.
