James Joseph Leon

leon-jamesGREAT BEND — James Joseph Leon, 59, died Dec. 25, 2016, at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita. Born Sept. 7, 1957, at Great Bend, he was the son of Encarnacion G. “Mario or Shorty” and Elizabeth (Gomez) Leon. A long time Great Bend resident, Mr. Leon was a clerk at Wal-Mart.

Mr. Leon was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend.

Survivors include two brothers, John Leon and his wife Roberta of Leavenworth, and Phillip Leon and his wife Jerri of Great Bend; three sisters, Maria Leeper and her husband Bill of Great Bend, Anita Leon and her wife Katina of Wichita, and Rose Trantham and her husband Dennis of Great Bend, 21 nieces and nephews, and 36 great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Gerianna Leon.

Vigil service and Rosary will be at 7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016, at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 30, 2016 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Ted Stoecklein celebrating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 29, at Bryant Funeral Home. Sherman Leon McIntyre

Rozel – Sherman Leon McIntyre, 78, passed away December 26, 2016 at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

He was born December 13, 1938 in Iowa City, Iowa; the son of Vernon and Arez Anderson McIntyre; a resident of Rozel for the last 27 years, moving from Norton, Kansas. He was a painter and drywall finisher.

He was a member of the Church of God of High Plains, Hays, Kansas. Sherman loved woodworking, making birdhouses and playing with his grandchildren.

On March 8, 1985 he married Wava Brooks in Hays, Kansas. She survives.

Other survivors include; six sons, James (Shantel), Larned, Randy (Vickie), Lime Springs, Iowa, Sherman L. (Betty Sue), Thomasville, Georgia, Kenny (Jenny), Iowa, Loni, Decorah, Iowa and Sherman L., Minnesota; two daughters, April (Aaron) Boese, Rozel and Janet Barr, Georgia; a sister, Beverly Jackson, Owasso, Oklahoma; thirty grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by; a son, Alan; five brothers, Jim, Alan, Doug, Billie and Richard and two sisters, Arlene Kinsel and Jean.

Ruby May Hunter

Larned – Ruby May Hunter, 80, passed away December 26, 2016, at Diversicare of Larned.

She was born February 18, 1936, in Missouri, the daughter of Victor and Luzelle Mitchell Chase. A longtime area resident, moving from Arkansas, she was a retired Licensed Mental Health Technician at the Larned State Hospital, Larned.

She was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church, Larned. She enjoyed doing word search puzzles, cross stitch, riding horses, bowling and loved music.

Survivors include: son, Victor Hunter, Archie, MO; two daughters, Julie Eddings, Alco, AR, Becky Obermiller, Garfield; six grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherrie Davis; two brothers, Frank and Lawrence Chase.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned.

Gabriel Diamond Verna

GREAT BEND — Gabriel Diamond Verna, 92, died Dec. 25, 2016, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. He was born Dec. 13, 1924, at Priest River, Idaho, the son of John and Matilda (Nacarrato) Verna. He married Laura L. Ellis June 19, 1943, at Pasadena, Calif.  She died June 20, 2016. Mr. Verna was a machinist for South Precision Products. Mr. Verna was a United States Army veteran, serving as a medic with the 229th General Hospital in the European and Asiatic-Pacific Theaters for 12 months tending to 120 patients.

Mr. Verna was a member of St. Louise Catholic Church and American Legion, both in California.

Survivors include two daughters, Janice Thielenhaus and her husband Arlyn of Great Bend, and Rita VandenBergh and her husband Hans of Apple Valley, Calif; one sister, Geneva of Hemet, Calif.; five grandchildren, Tammy Lopez and her husband Santa Cruz of Apple Valley, Calif., Sean Winter of Wichita, Ryan Winter and his wife Lesli of San Clemente, Calif., Tim Thielenhaus and his wife Evelyn of Novato, Calif., and Mark Thielenhaus and his wife Michelle of Lodi, Calif.; ten great-grandchildren, Bobby Fry, Andres Lopez, Madisen Winter, Jade Winter, Grace Winter, Kate Winter, Abigail Fry, Emily Thielenhaus, Crystal Thielenhaus, Bryden Thielenhaus and Chantel Thielenhaus. He was preceded in death by one brother, Bill Verna, and two sisters, Theresa and Dorothy.

Graveside service will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016 at Great Bend Cemetery North in Great Bend, with Pastor Arlyn Thielenhaus officiating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery North. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2016 at Bryant Funeral Home. Memorials have been established with Woodhaven Care Center or Almost Home, Inc., in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Roy Joseph VonFeldt

vonfeldt-royGREAT BEND — Roy Joseph VonFeldt, 79, died Dec. 23, 2016, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center, Great Bend. Born Aug. 4, 1937, at Walker, he was the son of Joe E. and Pauline (Bittel) VonFeldt. He married Carla Jean Smith Nov. 13, 1961, at Great Bend.  She died June 22, 2013. A resident of Great Bend most of his life, Mr. VonFeldt was a heavy equipment operator for Barton County Road and Bridge Department. He was a United States Army veteran.

Survivors include two sons, Randy VonFeldt and his wife Rhonda and Brad VonFeldt and his wife Michelle, both of Great Bend; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by six brothers, Robert VonFeldt, Ralph VonFeldt, Raymond VonFeldt, Rudy VonFeldt and Richard VonFeldt, and three sisters, Faye VonFeldt, Pauline VonFeldt and Albertine Denning.

Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Pastor Don Paden officiating.  Private family inurnment will be at a later date at Great Bend Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home.

reif-bobCLAFLIN – Bob Reif, 76, died Dec. 19, 2016, at his home in Claflin. He was born May 19, 1940, at Great Bend, the son of Frank and Magdaline (Hirsh) Reif. A veteran of the United States Army and a lifetime Claflin resident, Mr. Reif was a teller at Community Bank of the Midwest, Great Bend.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Claflin.

Survivors include one sister, Donna Mackler of Centennial, Colo.; two nieces, Courtney D’Ovidio and Amy Lyon; and one great-nephew, Lucas D’Ovidio.

Preston Allen Barnett

barnett-prestonGREAT BEND — Preston Allen Barnett, 28, died Dec. 19, 2016, at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita. Born March 7, 1988 at Great Bend, he was the son of Craig, Sr. and Betty Lou (Elson) Barnett. A Great Bend resident, Mr. Barnett was a caregiver for Pathways ResCare. He enjoyed fishing, video games, barbeques and being with his family.

Mr. Barnett was a member of River of Life Foursquare Gospel Church of Great Bend.

Survivors include two sons, Grant Barnett and Connor Barnett, both of Great Bend; one daughter, Natasha Barnett of Great Bend; significant other, Amber Greene; two sisters, Heather Crites and husband Justin of Great Bend, and Charley and husband Shannon Maughlin of Dighton; three brothers, Craig Barnett, Jr. and wife Trish and Cecil Barnett and wife Mary, both of Kingman, and Hunter Barnett of Great Bend. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Memorial service will be at 4 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 22, 2016, at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Schumacher officiating. Jerome L. “Jerry” Keenan

keenan-jerryGREAT BEND — Jerome L. “Jerry” Keenan, 74, died Dec. 19, 2016, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. Born May 11, 1942, at Larned, the son of Ora Francis and Marieda Verle (Gleason) Keenan. A Great Bend resident, Mr. Keenan owned and operated Green Valley Turf Farm in northern Nevada.

Mr. Keenan was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and E Clampus Vitas.

Survivors include three sons, Jeff Keenan of Great Bend, Anthony Keenan and wife Toni of Rochester, Wash., and Patrick Keenan and wife Mary K. of Red Bluff, Calif; one daughter, Allison Ortiz and husband Alex of Red Bluff, Calif.; two brothers, Don George Keenan and wife Nita of St. John, and Mark A. Keenan and wife Cindy of Lake Mary, Fla.; two sisters, including twin sister, Mary L. Elliott and husband Pat of Highland Village, Texas, and Anne Steinbacher of Olathe; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lane F. Keenan and Ray M. Keenan; one sister, Debra J. Keenan.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Inurnment will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Seward, at a later date. Memorials have been established with Golden Belt Humane Society, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Vernon W. Dirks

dirks-vernonALBERT — Vernon W. Dirks, 91, died Dec. 19, 2016, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. Born May 12, 1925, at Albert, he was the son of William and Hilda (Hemken) Dirks. He married Catherine Johanna Gerdes May 9, 1951, at rural Dodge City.  She died March 13, 2007. A lifetime Rush County resident, Mr. Dirks was a farmer and stockman.

Mr. Dirks was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, church choir, church men’s group and was past Garfield Township justice of the peace.

Survivors include one son, Gerald W. “Jerry” Dirks of rural Albert; two daughters, Carolyn J. Humburg and her husband Tom of Great Bend, and Charlene J. Miller of Monument, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Charlotte Humburg, Richard Humburg, Sara Selfridge, Juli Miller, Christopher Dirks, Jessica Dirks and Makenna Dirks; and six great-grandchildren, Adleigh Humburg, Ashlee Humburg, Thomas Humburg, Charles Selfridge, Carson Dirks and Owen Dirks. He was preceded in death by an infant son; son-in-law, Dwayne Miller; two brothers, Harry Dirks and Fred Dirks; and one sister, Marie H. Dirks.

A prayer service will be at 7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 22, 2016 at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Dec. 23, 2016, at Peace Lutheran Church, south of Albert, with the Rev. Shelly Klingensmith officiating.
