Patricia Ann (Schinstock) Barrett

barrett-patLarned- Patricia Ann (Schinstock) Barrett, 78, passed away December 12, 2016 at Diversicare of Larned.

Pat was born in Kinsley, KS to Joe and Edna Schinstock on October 29, 1938. She graduated from Kinsley High School. She then attended the St. Rose Dominican School of Nursing in Great Bend, KS, where she earned her RN degree.

On December 31, 1959 she married Millard K. Barrett in Kinsley, KS. He passed away August 4, 2011

Most of her working years were spent at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Larned, KS, where she touched many lives. She was involved in many nursing organizations and was a founding member of the Chemical Dependency Nurses Association. She received the Heart of Healthcare Nursing award in 1995. She enjoyed helping her children and grandchildren with their 4-H activities. She also loved attending her grandchildren and great grandchildren‘s activities and collecting Santa Clauses.

She is survived by four sons, Kevin Barrett and wife Janet of Larned, Steve Barrett and wife Brenda of Garden City, David Barrett of Larned, Jeff Barrett and wife Jennifer of Salina; one daughter, Jody Ary and husband Jeff of Lewis; two brothers, Don Schinstock of Hutchinson and Melvin Schinstock of Kinsley, nine grandchildren, three step grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one step great- grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Millard, infant daughter, Melissa, parents Joe and Edna Schinstock and brothers, Harold and Leo.

Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 am Friday, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Warren Stecklein presiding. Visitation will be from 9a.m. to 8p.m. Wednesday and Thursday with a Vigil Service held Thursday at 7p.m. at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be at the Pawnee Rock Cemetery following the service. Family requests everyone to wear Christmas attire.

Robert C. Gorman

robert-gormanBurdett – Robert C. Gorman, 83, passed away December 11, 2016 at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned.

He was born March 16, 1933 in Waco, Texas; the son of J. Paul and Winnie Reagen Gorman. A lifetime area resident he was an Oil and Gas Engineer.

He was a member of Faith Fellowship Church, American Legion, Burdett, the Society of Petroleum Engineers and the American Society of Safety Engineers.

He married Cleo M. Warner on December 27, 1965 in Burdett. She survives.

Other survivors include; two sons, Robert (Sheila) Gorman, McPherson and Paul (Erin) Gorman, Fort Worth, TX; a daughter, Kathy (Roger) Stoll, Niamey Niger, West Africa and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Pat Gorman.

Funeral will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Faith Fellowship Church with Pastor Doug Ellison presiding. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in Brown’s Grove Cemetery, Burdett.

Irene Ruth Ledford

ledford-ireneGREAT BEND — Irene Ruth Ledford, 93, died Dec. 11, 2016, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. Born Dec. 20, 1922, at Wheatland Township, Barton County, she was the daughter of Reinhold and Amalia “Mollie” (Beisel) Nuss. She married Albert M. “Bud” Jay Sept. 21, 1941. He died October 25, 1969. She then married Earl Ledford Aug. 15, 1970. He died May 24, 1987. A lifetime Barton County resident, Mrs. Ledford was a telephone operator for AT&T. She was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Women’s Army Corps as a clerk typist.

Mrs. Ledford was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Trinity Ladies Society, Trinity Lutheran Church 55 Plus Group, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3111 Auxiliary, all of Great Bend.

Survivors include one daughter, Renee Jolee Little of Great Bend; three sisters: Virginia Harmony of Great Bend, Ruby Manweiler of Hoisington, and Ruth Critser of WaKeeney; and one granddaughter, Marissa Nicole King. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Roland Nuss, Clarence Nuss, Wilbur Nuss, Gerhardt Nuss and Ray Nuss; and two sisters, Josephine Sutton and Berneice Hillman.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2016, at Bryant Funeral Home with the Reverend Barbara Jones officiating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to service time, Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2016, at Bryant Funeral Home. S. Larry Edwardson

Great Bend – S. Larry Edwardson, 79, died December 10, 2016 at Cherry Village in Great Bend. Born May 11, 1937 at Crisfield, MD, the son of Christian F. and Grace (Hoffmeyer) Edwardson. He married Carole Powell May 15, 1965, in Wilmington, DE. Larry retired from a long career as a Certified Financial Planner with Waddell & Reed, Inc.

Survivors include wife Carole of the home; daughter Amy Edwardson of Wichita; son David Edwardson of Great Bend; sister Lorna Mitten of Milford, DE and many nieces and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by daughter Susan, brothers Christian and Edward and sister Lorraine.

Private family inurnment will be held at a later date. There will be no viewing or visitation as cremation has taken place.

Memorials have been established with the Salvation Army or The Storm Special Olympics in Great Bend, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

ESTHER MAUREEN YEAKLEY

Esther Maureen Yeakley, age 78 years, of Hoisington, Kansas, went to be with her Lord on Friday morning, December 9, 2016 at Almost Home, Inc. in Great Bend, Kansas.   Maureen, as she was known by family and friends, was born on February 13, 1938 at Penokee, Kansas to John David and Ruth Emily (Rice) McRae. She graduated from Hill City High School in 1955 and then attended Kansas State University, where she met Gary G. Yeakley.   The couple was united in marriage on June 2, 1958 at Manhattan, Kansas.

Maureen did a lot of things in her life. She ran farm equipment on the family farm, took care of her three children, and cooked for family and helpers on the farm.   She served two terms on the Hoisington School Board, serving as Board President for part of that time.   She also served on several 4-H Boards. Maureen worked for Farm Bureau in Great Bend, and owned and operated the Bernina store in Great Bend for many years, doing seamstress work and also taught sewing.   She ran an Amway business and babysat grandchildren and great-grandchildren.   She was a great cook, seamstress, and listener.   Her final wish in life was to take her family on a cruise to Hawaii.   She and twenty of her family members went and tried to fulfill her dream.   Cancer took her life 12 days after they got home from the cruise.

Maureen is survived by her husband, Gary G. Yeakley of Hoisington, Kansas; two sons:   Steve (and his wife, Tammie) Yeakley of Hoisington, Kansas and Scott (and his wife, Priscilla) Yeakley of Bel Aire, Kansas; one daughter, Cheryl (and her husband, Jim) Brand of Colwich, Kansas; 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers:   John David (and his wife, Marge) McRae of Bayfield, Colorado and Dr. Paul McRae DVM of Hays, Kansas; one sister, Shirley (and her husband, Wes) Radcliff of Hoisington, Kansas; numerous nieces and nephews.   She was preceded in death by her parents.

A Graveside Memorial Service to celebrate Maureen’s life will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, December 16, 2016 at Great Bend City Cemetery in Great Bend, Kansas.   Friends and family will be gathering at Charter Funerals in Great Bend at 12:30 PM on Friday to process to the cemetery.   According to Maureen’s wishes, cremation has been chosen.   In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Almost Home, Inc. in Great Bend, Kansas.   Online condolences may be left for the family and a complete obituary may be viewed at https://www.charterfunerals.com/locations/great-bend.php.

Gary D. Cropp, 81, died December 9, 2016, at Clara Barton Hospital. He was born June 6, 1935, on the farm in Avard, Oklahoma, the son of Earl N. and Bonnie M. (Millsap) Cropp.
Gary graduated from Avard High School, Avard, Oklahoma and received his Bachelor of Science in Natural Sciences from Northwestern Oklahoma State, Alva, Oklahoma.
A longtime resident of Barton County, Gary was a farmer and a school teacher. He lived and farmed for many years near Susank, raising wheat and milking cows for 10 years. He retired from teaching in 1997, teaching at Hoisington for the past 20 years, but had also taught in Odin, Susank, and many other places around Kansas before that.
Gary was a member of the Concordia Lutheran Church.
On July 23, 1967, he married Virginia M. Baker in Pratt, Kansas. She preceded him in death on August 24, 2013.
Survivors include two sons; Robin Kletke and wife Robin Cohen of Seattle, Washington, and Lucas M. Cropp of Hoisington; brother, Jack Cropp and wife Lyla of Kiowa, Kansas; sister, Hazel Duran and husband Jerry of Salina, Kansas; lots of nieces and nephews; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia Cropp; infant daughter, Patricia Ann Cropp; sister, Clara Fuqua; and brothers John, Rex, and Lee Cropp.
Prayer Vigil will be 7:30 p.m. Sunday, December 11, 2016, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel. Born June 14, 1938, at Great Bend, he was the son of Leslie Lowell and Mathilda (Krkosska) Workman, Sr. He married Jean Marie Mausolf April 15, 1972 at Peace Lutheran Church, Albert.  A lifetime Great Bend resident, Mr. Workman was a serviceman for NCR. He was a United States Army Reserve veteran.

Mr. Workman enjoyed attracting purple martins, was involved in Boy Scouts and loved his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Marie Workman, of the home; two sons, Wesley Workman and his wife Charleen of Pittsburg, and Daryl Workman and his wife Amy of Americus; one brother, Lyman Workman of Ellsworth; three sisters-in-law, Nancy Workman of Lawson, Mo., Wanda Unruh of Newton, and Rose Ann Steitz of Warrensburg, Mo.; and five grandchildren, Desiree Workman, Jacob Workman, Tucker Workman, Tabor Workman and Gabby Kasjaka. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Larry Workman and Lyle Workman; and one granddaughter, Alicia Workman.

Darrell O. Batchman

batchman-darrellGREAT BEND — Darrell O. Batchman, 80, died Dec. 9, 2016, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. Born July 21, 1936, at Great Bend, he was the son of Alvin Otis and Neva Grace (Stone) Batchman. He married Audrey Ann Geil Aug. 7, 1955, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Albert.  She died July 27, 2016. A lifetime Barton County resident, Mr. Batchman was electrician group leader for Marlette Homes, worked in preventive maintenance at United Technology (Essex), and retired as an electrician at Larned State Hospital. He was a life-long farmer. He was a United States Army Reserve veteran.

Mr. Batchman was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, south of Albert, ARRL National Association for Amateur Radio, and area CB radio clubs. He enjoyed dirt bike riding and building radio controlled planes and helicopters and miniature steam engines.

Survivors include one son, Richard Batchman and his wife Debbie of Ellinwood; one sister, Marlene Neuforth of Great Bend; three grandchildren, Christopher Batchman and companion Alexandria Stimpson, Bryce Batchman and his wife Lindsey and Eric Batchman; seven great-grandchildren, Isaac Stimpson, Bradyn Batchman, Camryn Batchman, Alexander Gage Batchman, Avigeil Batchman, Jack Batchman, and Oliver Batchman; and two nephews, Alan Rose and David Rose.

Prayer service will be at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2016, at Bryant Funeral Home. Doris June McFarren

GREAT BEND — Doris June McFarren, 84, died Dec. 1, 2016, at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center, Topeka. Born Oct. 31, 1932, at Brownell, she was the daughter of John and Bertha (Foos) Helwig. She married Clayton McFarren Nov. 30, 1950 at Bazine.  He died February 23, 2010. A Great Bend, Kansas resident since 1972, coming from Dighton, Mrs. McFarren was a grocery store clerk and was bookkeeper for McFarren Motors.

Survivors include five sons, Terry McFarren and his wife Kathy of Great Bend, Marlin McFarren and his wife Lorna of Topeka, Curtis McFarren and his wife Trudi of Hays, Kelly McFarren of Tulsa, Okla., and Shane McFarren of Kansas City; five grandchildren, Troy, Travis, Matt, Aimee and Klayton; six step-grandchildren, Jeni, Karina, Katrina, Bethany, Brittany and Courtney; and 13 great-grandchildren, Trey, Trenton, Tyler, Makayla, Ayden, Rylee, Kennedy, Brianna, Kaden, Kodie, Cooper, Katie and Frankie. She was preceded in death by one sister, Edna Mai.

Arthur Brown “Art” Cravens

GREAT BEND — Arthur Brown “Art” Cravens, 90, died Dec. 5, 2016, at his home in Great Bend. Born Dec. 31, 1925, at Granite, Greer County, Okla., he was the son of Loranzo Arnold and May Belle (Reeves) Cravens. He married Alberta May Ramsey in 1947 and moved to Kansas in 1950. Arthur and Alberta divorced in 1977 and he moved to Great Bend. He married LaRea May (McConnaughy) Ochs Aug. 5, 1978, at Great Bend. He was a welder for Great Bend Industries and Flexweight. Mr. Cravens was United States Navy veteran, serving during World War II.

Mr. Cravens was a member of King United Methodist Church and American Legion Argonne Post 180, both of Great Bend. He was active in Head Start, Memories Matter Camp, singing at nursing homes and church, and was an avid gardener, selling veggies at the Locker.

Survivors include his wife, LaRea May Cravens, of the home; six sons, Russell Cravens and his wife Susan of Missoula, Mont., Daniel Cravens and his wife Chris of Harlingen, Texas, Rex Cravens and his wife Patty of Yukon, Okla., Fred Cravens and his wife Janis of Rockaway Beach, Mo., Bill Brown and his wife Julie of Basehor, and George Brown of Hutchinson; five daughters: Sheila Haase and her husband Phil of Wichita, Hope Budge and her husband Neal of Pretty Prairie, Connie Flint and her husband Bill of Lafayette, La., Beverley Brown of Great Bend, and Cheslea Rivera and her husband Frank of Hutchinson; one brother, Charles Cravens and his wife Nancy of Wichita; 29 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Lou Ann Showalter and Zandra Sue Cravens, and two brothers, Earl Cravens and Cecil Cravens.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016, at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Laurie White officiating. Burial with military rites by the United States Navy Honor Guard will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Great Bend, Kansas.
