Dorothy Elizabeth Biggs, 94, died November 13, 2016, at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. Dorothy was born June 6, 1922, in Bazine, KS, to Benjamin and Neta (Eldredge) Reinhardt.

Dorothy graduated from Great Bend High School in 1940. She continued her education at Fort Hays State University. Dorothy began her teaching career at Otis Rural High School, teaching there for three years before moving to Great Bend, where she taught for many years at Jefferson Elementary School. She married Michael Loy Biggs December 3, 1943 at Hays, KS. He died March 16, 1984. Dorothy was a member of First United Methodist Church, Barton County Association of Retired School Personnel, League of Women Voters, Barton County Historical Society, and Great Bend Community Theatre. Dorothy particularly enjoyed reading newspapers, newspaper puzzles, playing bridge, and visiting with family and friends.

Survivors include one son, Craig Michael Biggs and wife Jeanie of Lisle, ILL; one daughter, Kristin Boyden and husband Jim of Novato, CA; four grandsons, Collin Biggs and wife Kelly, Brandon Biggs and wife Nary, Dr. Kyle Biggs, and Benjamin Boyden; five Great Grandchildren, Crew, Harper, Amy, Sey, and Rex Biggs; three brothers, Dr. Franklin Reinhardt of Great Bend, Dr. Don Reinhardt and wife Helen of Mission, TX, and Richard Reinhardt and wife Nadith of Manhattan, KS; and by one sister, Margaret Hahn of Los Altos Hills, CA.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Michael, and by a sister-in-law, LaVerne Reinhardt.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 19, 2016, at First United Methodist Church in Great Bend, with Rev. Lennie Maxwell. Inurnment will take place at Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. He was employed by Myers Water Well Service, and the Great Bend Fire Department from 1948 to 1968, earning the rank as Captain.

Mr. Charles was a lifetime Great Bend resident.

He was a 1st Sgt in the United States Army, serving in World War II, 10th Mountain Division, and in Korea, as a combat engineer.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3111, Great Bend.

Two sons: Rich Charles of Great Bend and Duayne Charles, Jr. of Wichita

One sister: Alberta Hurd of Colorado Springs, Colo.

One granddaughter: Karen Jean Burt, Middleburg, Fla.

Paul Hoss

hoss-paulGREAT BEND — Paul Hoss, 94, died Nov. 8, 2016, at Rice County District Hospital Long-term Care, Lyons. He was born Sept. 18, 1922, in Lincoln Township, near Seward, the son of Charles and Otillia (Fehrenbach) Hoss. He was a graduate of Radium High School. He married Dorothy Alice Hall Nov. 27, 1946, at Seward.  She died Jan. 27, 2007. A lifetime area resident, Mr. Hoss was employed by the Barton County Shop for 40 years, first as a mechanic and later as shop foreman. He was a United States Navy veteran, serving during World War II. He enjoyed carpentry and woodcarving, creating handcrafted writing pens he shared with friends and family even after becoming legally blind.

Mr. Hoss was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #862, American Legion Argonne Post 180, and BPO Elks Lodge #1127, all of Great Bend.

Survivors include two sons, Don Hoss and his wife Anita of Overland Park, and Tim Hoss of Stafford; five daughters, Paula Sue Rixon and her husband Kent of St. John, Barbara Shirk and her husband Layne of Great Bend, Deanna Martinez and her husband Tony of Great Bend, Mary Alice Jones of Sterling, and Jane Bowers and her husband Robert of Ottawa; one sister, Angie Geil of Liberty, Mo.; 22 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Kent Hoss and Daniel Paul Hoss, four brothers, Carl Hoss, Stephen Hoss, Basil Hoss and Philip “Flip” Hoss, and three sisters, Agnes Berryhill, Irene Evers and Ann Bauer.

Vigil Service with Knights of Columbus Rosary will be at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 11, 2016, at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Sat., Nov. 12, 2016, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Don Bedore celebrating. Terence L. Redetzke

Terence L. “Big Terry” Redetzke, 62, died November 7, 2016, at Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City. He was born July 12, 1954, in Hoisington, Kansas, the son of Clarence and Martha (Hawes) Redetzke. Terry was a 1972 graduate of Hoisington High School.

A lifelong Hoisington area resident, Terry was a truck driver and the owner of TP Inc. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and a lifetime member of OOIDA, Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association.
On October 30, 1976, he married Pamela J. Harrison in Great Bend, Kansas.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Pamela Redetzke; children, Tanna Vine and husband Dustin of Ellis, Terry Redetzke and wife Sandy of Ellis, and Amanda Redetzke of Overland Park; siblings, Cathy Kruhm and husband Burt of Littleton, CO, Linda Rubio and husband Martin of Hoisington, Greg Redetzke of Hoisington, and Carol Redetzke of Great Bend; father-in law, William Harrison of Cedarville, AR; brother-in-law, Shane Harrison of Overland Park; and six grandchildren, Maleah, Westin, and Myles Vine, and Grace, Sydney, and Carter Redetzke.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Leo & Cecelia Redetzke; mother-in-law, Shirley Harrison; brothers-in-law, Clay and Lance Harrison; and his beloved dog and best friend, Jake.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 11, 2016, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, celebrated by Father Anselm Eke. Burial will follow in St. John Catholic Cemetery.

Survivors include his father, Don Kern of Great Bend, two sons: Sloane Kern and his wife Tiffani of Dodge City, and Corbin Kern of Maize; one daughter, Shanel Kern of Maize; one sister, RaeGina Werth of Great Bend; three brothers, Lafe Kern and his wife Erin of Hutchinson, Dino Kern of Morrison, Colo., and Reggie Kern and his wife Meghan of Great Bend; three grandchildren, Amaya Kern, Zaylee Kern and Drake Kern; six nieces and four nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Donna Kern, and a son, Christopher Kern.

IVAN C. BARR

Ivan C. Barr, age 61 years, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away early on Monday morning, November 7, 2016 at his home in Great Bend after an extended illness.   Ivan was born on February 6, 1955 at Neligh, Nebraska to William Fredrick and Bernice Irene (Walker) Barr. He graduated from Tilden High School in 1973, and was united in marriage to Donita C. Clark on June 18, 1977 at Great Bend, Kansas. Ivan worked in the oilfield his entire career, including as an over the road truck driver for Transport Express for 5 years, for Baker-Hughes Petrolite for 10 years, and was a dedicated employee for JaCam Chemicals/Carriers for 16 years, most recently as a Truck Fabrication Manager.   He attended Cornerstone Fellowship in Great Bend, Kansas, and loved attending car shows and working on cars. Ivan’s dream was to restore a 1968 Super Sport El Camino.

Survivors his wife, Donita C. Barr of Great Bend, Kansas; two sons:   Daniel Barr of Lawrence, Kansas and Benjamin (and his wife, Marie) Barr of Dodge City, Kansas; three grandchildren:   Daelin, Morgan, and Savannah Barr; three brothers:   Pat (and his wife, Linda) Dennison of DeWitt, Nebraska, Keith (and his wife, Kelly) Barr of Wellington, Nevada, and Blaine (and his wife, Angie) Barr of Great Bend, Kansas; five sisters:   Linda (and her husband, Robert) Davis of Pierce, Nebraska, Bonnie (and her husband, Steve) Ruzicka of Verdigre, Nebraska, Barbara (and her husband, Kevin) McClellan of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Nancy Shipps of Pierce, Nebraska, and Mary Klinetobe of Tilden, Nebraska. Ivan was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, November 11, 2016 at Charter Funerals in Great Bend, Kansas with Pastor Curtis Reinhardt officiating. Martin Arthur Morgenstern

Martin Arthur Morgenstern, 102, died November 6, 2016, at his home in Great Bend, surrounded by many people who loved him. He was born September 6, 1914, on the family farm near Galatia, Russell County, Kansas. Martin was the son of Samuel and Lena (Radke) Morgenstern. Martin graduated from Russell High School.

Martin was a lifetime Barton County resident living in Galatia, Hoisington, and Great Bend. He worked in the oil industry as a contract pumper and supervisor for Central Petroleum and Shell Oil. In addition Martin was also employed in law enforcement as a reserve officer.

Martin was a World Warr II veteran serving in the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant from 1942 to 1945. During his time in the service, Martin earned four bronze stars for battles in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was also decorated with the Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge., World War II Victory Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon and the Eame Theater Ribbon.

Martin was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hoisington. He was a member of the American Legion, and was a lifetime member of both the V.F.W. and the Elks Club. He enjoyed fishing, trap shooting, hunting, and playing cards.

On December 25, 1938, he married Wilma Moore in Otis, Kansas. They had nearly 73 years together. She preceded him in death on October 25, 2011.

Survivors include his three nephews: Kent Gates of Kansas City, Missouri, Bruce Corbin and wife Erin of Topeka, Kansas, and Gary Corbin and wife Sherry of Carmel, Indiana. Martin was also survived by many dear friends, including Keith Lamb, Tera and Leroy Tiemeier, and many wonderful ladies from Elder Care of Great Bend, and compassionate staff of Golden Belt Hospice of Great Bend, all who lovingly cared for him in his home the past four months.

He was preceded in death by his wife Wilma, two brothers, Ralph and Luther Morgenstern, and a sister, Amanda Morgenstern.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Saturday, November 12, 2016, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Reuben Lang’at presiding. Burial will follow in Hoisington Cemetery, with military honors provided by Fort Riley Honor Guard and escorted by the Patriot Guard. Friends may call 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home. schmitt-dorothyGREAT BEND — Dorothy May Schmitt, 77, died Nov. 3, 2016, at her home in Great Bend. She was born June 29, 1939, at LaCrosse, the daughter of Dan and Katherine (Herdt) Wagner. She married Vernon Schmitt and they later divorced. A Great Bend resident most of her life, coming from Otis, Mrs. Schmitt was a retired secretary for Sunflower Diversified Services.

Mrs. Schmitt was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, Women of the ELCA, church choir and monthly daytimers group.

Survivors include two sons, Mark Schmitt and his wife Laura of Great Bend, and Scott Schmitt and his wife Sharon of Great Bend; one daughter, Tracy Jenisch and her husband Jason of Harrisonville, Mo.; one brother, Kenneth Wagner of Anderson, S.C.; nine grandchildren, Chasity Navarro, Terra DeCarolis, Danielle McNutt, Robert Schmitt, Samantha Schmitt, Ryan Schmitt, Tyler Werth, Morgan Werth and Katherine Jenisch; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Elisa Schmitt.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 11, 2016, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Great Bend, with the Reverend Adam Wutka officiating. VIRGINIA MARIE WALTERS

Virginia M. Walters, age 96 years, lifelong Great Bend, Kansas resident, passed away on Sunday afternoon, October 30, 2016 at Country Place Living in Ellinwood, Kansas. Virginia was born at her grandparents’ house at what is now 10th and Jackson in Great Bend, Kansas on May 27, 1920 to Joseph Roy and Mary Louise “Louisa” (Whitacre) Evans.   She grew up in a house on the southwest corner of 11th and Monroe Streets and in 1938 she graduated from Great Bend High School, where she had been Homecoming Queen.   After graduation, she was selected to be Miss Great Bend and competed at the state final Miss Kansas contest in Topeka.   She was united in marriage to Cleat Walters on January 29, 1939 in Great Bend, Kansas. Cleat shared her keen interest in history and they both were involved in many historical adventures.

Virginia worked at the Kansas State Job Service for 23 years prior to her retirement, working her way up the ranks to the title of Interviewer.   Virginia and Cleat attended the First Southern Baptist Church in Great Bend, where they were members since 1978.   They sang in choirs both there and at the First United Methodist Church in Great Bend.   Virginia was a longtime member of the Barton County Historical Society and the Great Bend Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, and loved doing embroidery, but most especially would wish to be known for being a history buff.

Virginia is survived by one son, Donald (and his wife, Cynthia) Walters of Monterey, California; nine grandchildren:   Reuben (RJ) Gutierrez, Lonnie Gutierrez, Lynn Isley, Cleat III (Trey) Walters, Van Walters, Alexia Walters, Derek Walters, Jillian Walters, and Zachary Hansarik; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Cleat Walters on March 6, 2004, one son Cleat Walters, Jr., two daughters:   Diana M. Walters and Carol Ann Walters Vieyra, and two brothers:   Joseph Roy Evans, Jr. and Dr. William R. Evans.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Virginia’s life will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at Charter Funerals in Great Bend, Kansas with Pastor Keith Bryant officiating.   According to Virginia’s wishes, cremation has been chosen. Martha Bender

bender-marthaGREAT BEND — Martha Bender, 98, died Nov. 4, 2016, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center, Great Bend. She was born Aug. 16, 1918, at Susank, the daughter of Jacob and Anna Marie (Daubert) Maier. She married Louie Bender Nov. 14, 1937, at Russell. He died November 15, 1969. A Great Bend resident since 1943, coming from Russell, Mrs. Bender was a homemaker.

Mrs. Bender was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend.

Survivors include two daughters, Lela “Lea” M. Johnston of Phoenix, Ariz., and Donna Marie Fronterhouse of Wichita; three sisters, Leona Slankard of Wichita, Edna Nuss of Hoisington, and Eleanora Postlethwaite of Great Bend; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, David Maier, Sam Maier, Emil Maier and Edward Maier, and two sisters, Alma Stewart and Hilda Jones.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend, with the Rev. Jon Brudvig officiating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m., Monday, Nov. 7, 2016, at Bryant Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Memorials have been established with Kindred Hospice, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.
