Thomas “Mike” Murphy

murphy-thomas-mikeSMYRNA, Ga. — Thomas “Mike” Murphy, 70, formerly of Great Bend, died Oct. 17, 2016. He was born Jan. 1, 1946, at Great Bend, the son of Ralph and Selenah (Clements) Murphy. He married Mary A. Torrez on Oct. 28, 1968, at Fairbury, Neb.  A proud veteran of the United States Army, he honorably served two tours in the Vietnam Conflict, and two tours in Europe, as well as a diplomatic tour in Iran. Mr. Murphy was retired from Barton County, working both in the Sheriff’s Office and Weed Department. He was an Atlanta resident since 2001.

Devoted to his family, he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Mr. Murphy really enjoyed traveling back home to Kansas at every available opportunity to spend time visiting with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Mary A. Murphy; son, Chad and Angela Murphy of Sterling; daughter, Carrie and Christopher Dickson of Atlanta, Ga.; granddaughters, Brittany Williams of Great Bend and Claire Dickson of Atlanta; grandsons, Michael Murphy and Caleb Murphy, both of Sterling; great-grandchildren, Kami Williams, Treacyn Williams, and Anaceliya Murphy; sister, Coleen Murphy of Great Bend; nephews, Dennis and Leann Smith of Belle, Fla., Terry Smith of Salina, and Steve Murphy of Great Bend; nieces, Sharon and Ronald Schremmer of Wichita, Linda and Gerald Witt of Hutchinson, Jan and Robert Morgenstern of Hoisington, Mary Lynn and Randy Dumler of Hoisington, and Cathy Asher of Derby; and a host of other family and friends. Mr. Murphy was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Patrick Murphy; sister, Margaret Murphy Smith; and a nephew, Mark Smith.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 28 2016, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend. Interment will follow at the Great Bend Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 27, 2016, at Bryant Funeral Home, with a rosary immediately following.

Melvin Virgil Bowlus

Larned – Melvin Virgil Bowlus, 83, passed away October 20, 2016, at his home in Larned.

He was born December 21, 1932 in Watonga, Oklahoma; becoming the adopted son of Harold August and Augusta Irene Henning Bowlus at the age of three.

He spent his lifetime in the area working for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad as a telegraph operator/depot agent and later as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Larned. He was a veteran having served in both the Navy and Army and was a lifetime member of the VFW at the Hanston/Ransom Post.

He was associated with the Church of the Nazarene in Larned from the age of eleven where his parents were charter members. He attended Bethany Nazarene College, Bethany, Oklahoma.

He had a long interest in the railroads, having built his own model layout in his basement and was a member of the Santa Fe Railway Historical & Modeling Society and the Southwest Kansas Railroad Society.

On June 29, 1957, he married Carol Louise Yust in Larned.

Survivors include: his wife, one aunt, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, with Rev. Daryl Riffel presiding. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Beckwith Mortuary. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned.

Glynnese Jones

jones-glynneseGREAT BEND –   Glynnese Jones, 92, died Oct. 20, 2016 at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. She was born June 14, 1924 at Hoisington, the daughter of Harry Alfred and Nettie Elveta (Jones) Lee. She married Cecil Edward Jones March 28, 1943 at San Diego, Calif.  He died March 18, 1998. A lifetime Barton County resident, Mrs. Jones was a secretary at Harrison Junior High School, Great Bend.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Great Bend.

Survivors include three sons, Todd Jones and his wife Candace of Great Bend, Brent Jones and his wife Cheryl of Topeka, and Lance Jones and Mary McMullen of Boulder, Colo.; two sisters, DoDo White of Great Bend, and Diann Fullerton of Yuma, Ariz.; one brother-in-law, Everett Jones and his wife Nancy; one sister-in-law, Dr. Freda Jones; seven grandsons; two granddaughters; and ten great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Monday, Oct. 24, 2016 at Bryant Funeral Home with The Rev. Lenard Maxwell officiating. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m., Monday at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Great Bend. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Virgil H. Donovan

Larned – Virgil H. Donovan, 83, passed away October 18, 2016 at Diversicare of Larned.

He was born July 9, 1933 in Larned, the son of Paul H. Sr, and Elsie N. King Donovan. A lifetime area resident, he was a retired animal control officer for the city of Larned.

He was a volunteer for the Larned Fire Department and a member of the Monday night Bowling League. He loved to follow his grandchildren in sports, local sporting events, hunting and fishing.

On October 24, 1959, he married Shirley F. Roe in Clovis, New Mexico. She passed away October 4, 2014.

Survivors include: three sons, Donnie (Christina) Donovan, Friona, TX, Mike Donovan, Larned and Larry Donovan (Debbie), Larned; a daughter, Debbie (Jeff) Fountain, Arlington; a brother, Paul (Karen) Donovan Jr., Liberal; five grandchildren, Briana, Megan, Tyler, Sean, Michelle, and two great grandchildren, Kolten and Payten.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, with Pastor Ryan Webster presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday with family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned.

Robert K. Hoch

Robert K. Hoch, 69, died October 16, 2016, at Great Bend Regional Hospital.  He was born Nov. 29, 1946, in Hoisington, Kansas, the son of O.C. “Poss” and Esther (Keenan) Hoch.  Robert graduated from Hoisington High School in 1964.  He was a Vietnam veteran serving with the United States Navy.
A lifetime resident of Hoisington, he worked as a night watchman for Great Bend Feeding.  He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion, and was of the Catholic faith.
On December 29, 2012, he married Crystal F. Crawford, she survives.  Other survivors include; a son, Bo Hoch and wife Sandy of Norfolk, VA; two brothers, Don Richard “Dick” Hoch and wife Sharon of Pomona, KS, and Pat Hoch of Great Bend; and his mother-in-law, Helen Baker of Kansas City, Kansas.
He was preceded in death by, his parents, a brother, Jon Hoch, and a sister, Connie Hoopingarner.
A gathering of friends and family will take place from 4 to 7 p.m., on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2016, at the South Tap Room, Hoisington, Kansas. Cremation has taken place.     Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (for the benefit of Cheyenne Bottoms),  in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, PO Box 146, Hoisington, KS 67544.

Valeta B Milhon

valeta-milhonLarned – Valeta B Milhon, 91, passed away October 15, 2016 at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned.

She was born May 28, 1925 in Centerview, Kansas; the daughter of Otis and Olema Freeman Derley. A lifetime area resident, she was a daycare provider and a school cook.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, Christian women ladies group and the Welcome Inn Senior Center, all of Larned.

On August 13, 1944 she married Norman Ray Milhon in Lewis, Kansas. He passed away September 29, 2003.

Survivors include; two sons; Darrell (Kathy) Milhon, Norden, Nebraska and David (Michelle) Milhon, Kansas City, Missouri; her friend, Roger Haberman, Larned; fifteen grandchildren, thirty one great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by; a son, Dennis Milhon and two sisters, Hazel Heit and Moureen Mehringer.

Funeral will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel with Father Warren Stecklein presiding. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday with family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary. Burial will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned, Kansas.

David F. Folkerts

Folkerts, DavidDavid F. Folkerts, CPA — 1938 – 2016

GREAT BEND — David F. Folkerts, CPA, 78, died Oct. 12, 2016, at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. He was born Aug. 18, 1938 at Larned, the son of Harm Herman and Mabel Pearl (Simmons) Folkerts. He was a 1956 graduate of Great Bend High School and received a Master of Accounting degree from the University of Kansas. He married Cecile Krause Samson Aug. 29, 1959, at Seward. A lifetime Great Bend area resident, Mr. Folkerts was a long-time partner with Fred C. Maneth at Maneth and Folkerts Accounting Firm. He was United States Air Force veteran, serving from 1963 to 1965, attaining the rank of first lieutenant.

Mr. Folkerts was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, and Knights of Columbus. He was a former member of Optimist Club St. Patrick School board, Prince of Peace Parish Council and Campfire board. He was active as a Boy Scout leader, and agriculture and oil investor. He co-founded Westwood and the Teen Center. Mr. Folkerts was an avid golfer and hunter, and loved University of Kansas sports. He loved his family.

Survivors include his wife, Cecile Folkerts, of the home; one son, Bryan David Folkerts and his wife Adrienne of Olathe; two daughters, Rebecca Huff and her husband Larry of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Michelle Chamness and her husband Mark of Highlands Ranch, Colo. three brothers, Terrence L. Keenan of Ness City, Larry E. Keenan of Great Bend, and Dennis J. Keenan of Great Bend; two sisters, Georgiann Bauer of Pawnee Rock, and Gloria Ball of Seattle, Wash.; ten grandchildren, Jessica, Jacob, Katie, Tara, Taylor, Alexis, Amanda, Mallory, Nicole and Colin; and two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Isadora. He was preceded in death by his father, Harm Herman Folkerts; his mother, Mabel Pearl Folkerts Keenan; his step-father, Patrick L. Keenan; five brothers, Donald Folkerts, Paul E. Keenan, Ora F. Keenan, Robert P. Keenan, and Patrick L. Keenan, and five sisters, Glenna Rose Row, Evelyn Mazurkiewicz, Louise Dale, Sylvia Chadd Langer and June Klepper.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials are requested to University of Kansas Cancer Center, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Bownes, RitaRita Jo (Link) Bownes – 1959 – 2016

GREAT BEND — Rita Jo (Link) Bownes, 57, died Oct. 12, 2016, at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita. She was born April 13, 1959, at Great Bend, the daughter of Kenneth J. and Shirley J. (Wallace) Link. She married Lynn Bownes August 11, 1978, at Ellinwood. A lifetime Great Bend resident, Mrs. Bownes owned Beer 30 Drinking Hole.

She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society, and “The Tribe”. She enjoyed NASCAR, especially Carl Edwards, dachshunds, 4-H, her many friends and time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Lynn Bownes, of the home; her parents, Kenneth and Shirley Link of Great Bend; two sons, Ryan Bownes and his wife Staci of Great Bend, and Derek Bownes and his wife Ashley of Holcomb; one daughter, Kalesha Schartz and her husband Matt of Garden City; two sisters, Linda Meyeres and husband Jim of Chase, and Denise Barbour and husband Jack of San Angelo, Texas; and four grandchildren, Mikayla, Brenna, Mae Lynn and Emeri. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mark Allen Link and Kent Eugene Link.

Altar Society Rosary will be at 4 p.m. and Vigil service will be at 7 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016, at Bryant Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Oct. 17, 2016, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Ted Stoecklein celebrating. Burial will be in Eden Valley Cemetery, rural Seward. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016, at Bryant Funeral Home. Bob married Merlyn Byers June 6, 1954 at Great Bend, KS. He served during Korean War in the U.S. Army, earning the rank of Sergeant.
A lifetime Barton County resident, Bob co-owned and operated Brack and Henning Floor Covering, and attended Faith Community Church and was a member of V.F.W. Post #3111, both of Great Bend. He was active in the Assembly of God Church, serving as a bus driver for 13 years. Bob was as a man of few words, and enjoyed being active outdoors and indoors, always having a project.
