Darrell Gene Bradshaw

ALEXANDER — Surrounded by loved ones, Darrell Gene Bradshaw passed away at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Sept. 5, 2016, after a sudden heart attack in June and a battle with undiagnosed cancer. Darrell was the fourth child born to Elgin and Mary (Butler) Bradshaw in Big Spring, Texas. He moved to Kansas at the age of 12 years where he remained, graduating from Great Bend High School. It was in junior high that he met his first wife, JoAnn Archer. They were married on Nov. 13, 1976.  They had one daughter, Christina, and were married 24 years before JoAnn passed away on Feb. 3, 2000. Darrell married Melissa Morgan Mantz on Sept. 3, 2005.

Darrell worked for KMW in Great Bend as a welding supervisor and robot programmer.  He worked in the same building KMW occupies in Great Bend for more than 20 years.  It was often said he was listed as a fixture when the building was sold between companies.

Darrell was a part of many families. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Melissa of Alexander; two daughters, Christina Bennett and husband Roy of Great Bend, and Alyse Mantz of Everett, Wash.; mom, Lora Raybern of Seward; seven brothers, Kenny Bradshaw and wife Cindy of St. John, Jesse Bradshaw of Lubbock, Texas, Cary Bradshaw of Cheyenne, Okla., William Ingram and wife Carol of Cheyenne, Okla., Lew Raybern and wife Amy of Seward, Shannon Raybern and wife Julie of Great Bend, and Don Raybern of Radium; three sisters, Mary Ann Bramlee of Andrews, Texas, Laretta Lee and husband Shorty of Cisco, Texas and Patty Raybern of Great Bend, two brothers-in-law, Eddie and wife Linda Archer of Valley Center and Lanny Morgan of North Platte, Neb.; two sisters-in-law, Theresa Depperschmidt and husband James of Sylvia and Carla Raybern of McPherson; parents-in-law: Lance and Gloria Morgan of Alexander; as well as numerous nieces and nephews who he loved dearly.   He is preceded in death by his parents; first wife, JoAnn; dad, Sam Raybern; parents-in-law, Bill and Margaret Archer; and brothers, Lonnie Bradshaw and Jimmy Raybern.

He touched many lives and was the kind of person who would make you smile just by walking into the room.  He was a prankster, was witty and will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016, at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Wade Russell officiating. Inurnment will be in Golden Belt Memorial Park. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials are requested to Camp Hope, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Alvin K. Schettler

Schettler, AlvinALBERT — Alvin K. Schettler, 86, died Sept. 6, 2016, at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. He was born April 30, 1930, at Stoughton, Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of Rev. Kurt G. and Louise (Schempp) Schettler. He married Janet Read October 19, 1952 at Belgrade, Nebraska.  An Albert resident since 1965, Mr. Schettler was a Booster Station Plant Operator for Natural Gas Pipeline Co., and retired from Occidental Petroleum in 1996. He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Schettler was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Great Bend.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Schettler, of the home; two sons: Mike Schettler and his wife Terri of Great Bend, and David Schettler and his wife Nola of Omaha, Neb.; one daughter: Nancy Brady and her husband Dale of Albert; one brother: Paul Schettler and his wife Jeannie of Columbus, Neb.; six grandchildren, Brandy Maneth and her husband Mike, Kim Duran and her husband Paul, Matthew Schettler and his wife Jessica, Michael Schettler and his companion Keleigh, Cait Boyer and her husband Brian and Jayme Mayers and her husband Jason; seven great-grandchildren, Bryce Maneth, Kolton Maneth, Hannah Duran, Brady Duran, Sammi Mayers, Alex Mayers and Stevie Mayers. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Schettler and Hilda Tittel.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 9, 2016 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend with the Reverend Jon Brudvig officiating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery North. Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, September 8, 2016 at Bryant Funeral Home. LaVerne Aileen Reinhardt, age 92, died Sept. 3, 2016, at her home in Great Bend.  She was born Aug. 10, 1924, in Heizer, the daughter of Paul James and Agnes Viola (Schroeder) Pascoe, Jr. LaVerne married Franklin Dale Reinhardt, DO, December 25, 1950, at Great Bend. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, LaVerne owned and operated Heirloom Creations Quilt ShopShe was a member of Foundry Methodist Church, Gideons International Auxiliary, Girl Scout leader, Boy Scout den mother, and enjoyed quilting, knitting, sewing, woodworking, crocheting, carpentry, and was especially known for her passion for the State of Israel and the Jewish people.  She served as past president of the Kansas Optometric Auxiliary in 1965.

Survivors include her husband, Franklin, of the home; two sons, Brent Reinhardt and his wife Janet, of Wichita, Randall Reinhardt, DDS, of Great Bend; two daughters, Roxanne Smith, of Wichita, and Renee Betcher and her husband David, of Leesburg, Va.  Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Brian Smith, DDS, and wife Emily, Abby Andrus and husband Adam, Rex Reinhardt, Megan Betcher, and Matthew Betcher, Blake Scarmeas and Cole Scarmeas; three great grandchildren, Boone Smith, Vera Smith, and Elsie Andrus; her Vietnamese family, Bon, Jackie, Esther, Victor, Remy and Sandy.  She was preceded in death by one brother, Wendell E. Pascoe, two sisters, Dorothy Larson, and an infant, and a son-in-law, Robert Smith, DDS.

Services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016, at Foundry Methodist Church in Great Bend, with Rev. Aaron Withrow. A private family inurnment will be held at Great Bend Cemetery at a later date.  Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, Sept. 16, 2016, at Bryant Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, memorials have been suggested to Foundry Methodist Church or Gideons International, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Aaron C. “Nick” Nicholas, 46, died September 1, 2016 at his home in Hoisington, Kansas. He was born April 18, 1970, in Salina, Kansas, the son of Marion and Jeannie Thornton Nicholas. Aaron graduated from Hoisington High School as a member of the class of 1989. He graduated from Phoenix Vo-Tech for Heating and Air. He also attended Barton County Community College. He was member of New Life Baptist Church.

Aaron worked for Werth Heating and Air for many years. Aaron loved the sport of racing, watching movies and listening to music. His favorite holiday was the 4th of July. The highlight of his life was spending time with his sons. He was married to Jama Ranee Nicholas for fifteen years.

Survivors include sons Brody and Braxton both of Hoisington, mother Jeannie Mater of Hoisington; sisters Stacey Vincent and husband Shawn Steiner of Hoisington, Dulcy Palnau, Corrie Mater, Audrey and husband Chad Kirkman and Sarah Mater, all of Wichita, Kansas; niece April VanScyoc and husband LaShon; nephews Tristan Palnau, Aidan Palnau, Payton Steiner, Orvis Kirkman and Theodore Kirkman; one great nephew Ki VanScyoc and two great nieces Nora and Ella VanScyoc. He was preceded in death by grandparents Earl and Myrtle Thornton.

Memorial Services will be 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 7, 2016, at the New Life Baptist Church, Hoisington, Kansas, with pastor Denny Lewis presiding. Wendell Donovan Hinkson

GREAT BEND — Wendell Donovan Hinkson, 75, died Aug. 31, 2016 at Wesley Woodlawn Hospital, Wichita. He was born Nov. 30, 1940 at Wichita, the son of Donovan John and Elvie Mae (Shank) Hinkson. He married Maxie A. (Cox) Saville October 1, 1978 at Junction City. Coming to Great Bend in 1988 from Hutchinson, Mr. Hinkson was a funeral director at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home until his retirement in 2006 after 50 years of service to the profession. He was a United States Army Reserve veteran.

Mr. Hinkson was a member of First Southern Baptist Church, Central Kansas Photography Club, Barton County Historical Society, Great Bend Chamber of Commerce and the NRA. He was a former Great Bend Rotary Club member, where was a Paul Harris Fellow. He enjoyed motorcycling, photography, crafting, woodworking and leather work. He also held a private pilot’s license.

Survivors include his wife Maxie Hinkson, of the home; two daughters, Kimberly S. Newell and her husband Roger of Salina and Sherri L. Reed of Salina; sister-in-law, Jeline Hinkson; two grandchildren, Brett Newell and Cory Newell; and two great-grandchildren, Braxton and Bryson. He was preceded in death by one brother, Rev. Dr. Kent T. Hinkson.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, September 3, 2016 Bryant Funeral Home, with the Reverend Dick Ogle and Reverend Keith Bryant officiating.  Burial will be in Crandall Union Cemetery, Ness County. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, September 2, 2016 at Bryant Funeral Home. Marjorie “Marj” Christopher

Marjorie “Marj” Christopher, 94, died August 30, 2016, at Grace of Leawood Assisted Living Facility. She was born November 5, 1921, in rural Hoisington, the daughter of Roy E. and Emma W. (Beetz) Underwood. Marjorie graduated from Hoisington High School in 1939. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

A longtime Hoisington resident she was a homemaker. Marj moved to Leawood in 2007 and lived at Town Center Independent Living where she enjoyed playing bridge and bingo, and having dinner with her friends. She then moved to Grace of Leawood Assisted Living in 2013.

She was married to Vernon Wesley Christopher for 56 years. He died October 30, 1995.
Survivors include: children, Ron Christopher and wife Jolene of Overland Park, Judy M. Bangert and husband Larry of Denver, CO, Cheryl L. Cullison and husband Carl of Birmingham, AL; eight grandchildren, Lori Kearney, Kristin Dalla, Jennifer Deere, Jodi Christopher, Tracy Hudson, Andy Christopher, Kelly Smith, and Jason Cullison; and 11 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Wilbur Underwood, sister, Helen Stipes, and an infant brother, Robert Underwood.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Friday, September 2nd, 2016, at First United Methodist Church, Hoisington, Kansas, with The Rev. Dr. Reuben Lang’at presiding. Burial will follow in Hoisington Cemetery. Terry Lee Riddle

Riddle, TerryBETHANY, Okla. — Terry Lee Riddle, 38, died Aug. 27, 2016 at Deaconess Hospital, Oklahoma City. He was born Jan. 8, 1978 at Phoenix, Ariz., the son of Ron and Shannon (Pound) DeHaan. He was a 1996 graduate of Macksville High School. He enjoyed playing football and running track, especially hurdles, at Macksville and ran in the AAU Nationals at Rochester, Minn. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and being with family.

Terry was previously employed by Fuller Brush, Devine Masonry and Chase Well Service, all of Great Bend; and Key Energy of Oklahoma City.

Survivors include his parents Ron and Shannon DeHaan of Pawnee Rock; two sons, Jericho James Riddle of Oklahoma City, and Jaron Alan Riddle of Sterling; two brothers: Shawn David DeHaan and wife Elisha of Spearman, Texas, and Ryan Charles DeHaan and Amber Sisson of Great Bend; two nephews, Connor DeHaan and Colton DeHaan; grandmother, Ruth Hoard of Tucson, Ariz.; special aunts and uncles, Donna and R. C. Williams of Great Bend; and Charlie and Sherry DeHaan of Hays; and very special friend, Kristen Johnson of Oklahoma City. He was preceded in death by one sister, Nicole Sue DeHaan; and grandparents, Donald Pound, Richard Hoard and John and Evelyn Drew.

William SeyfertWilliam “Bill” Seyfert Jr.

1925 ~ 2016

William “Bill” Seyfert Jr., 91 years old died on August 19, 2016 at the Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital. Bill was born May 2, 1925 as an only child to William and Nannie Seyfert at Wilson, Kansas. Bill attended country school through the 8th grade and attended the Lutheran Church both of Wilson.

Bill married Connie White and to this union they were blessed with four sons: Fred, Bob, Ted, and Steve. Bill, as a widower, later married Maxine McCourtney at Burchfiel Church in Anthony, Kansas. She became ill and passed away, once again leaving Bill, a widower. On July 24, 1999 Bill married Jennie Van Ranken in Anthony and they made their home in Medicine Lodge.

Bill worked in Great Bend, Kansas for ACME Brick Company from which he retired. He then worked for Harper County as a Heavy Equipment Operator and later worked at the Farmer’s Coop in Isabel, Kansas. Bill enjoyed fishing, dancing, yardwork, traveling, riding his motorcycle and spending time in his little shop. Bill spent the last nine months of his life at the Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit where he received wonderful care. He so missed being at home with Jennie and worked very hard trying to build himself back up to get home. He is remembered by the care team for always having a witty come back to them when they were joking with him and a smile. He was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Survivors include wife, Jennie of the home; four sons, Fred (Lorine), Bob (Karen), Ted, and Steve (Lisa); step-daughters, Diana (John) Englehardt and Anita (Pat) Bedwell, four step-sons, Howard (Loretta) Van Ranken, Doug (Cindy) Van Ranken , Ronnie (Cindy) Van Ranken, Roger (Tonia) Van Ranken; eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends.

Graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 2, 2016 at the Great Bend City Cemetery, Great Bend, Kansas. Cremation has taken place.

Memorials are requested to the First Christian Church and Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital, both of Medicine Lodge and may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Delores R. Ochs

Ochs, DeloresGREAT BEND — Delores R. Ochs, 91, died Aug. 22, 2016 at her home in Great Bend. She was born Jan. 19, 1925 at Milberger, the daughter of Ben & Lydia (Miller) Boxberger. She married Edwin Ochs April 20, 1947 at Otis Lutheran Church, Otis.  He died August 5, 1980. A homemaker, Mrs. Ochs was a Great Bend resident. She was an avid gardener, enjoyed sewing and playing cards.

Survivors include one son Darrell Ochs and his wife Kathy of Great Bend; one brother, Eugene Boxberger and his wife Jackie of Everton, Mo., two grandchildren, Nickie Ochs and Darren Ochs; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Duane Ochs, three sisters and one brother.

OBITUARY INFORMATION

Loyola married Robert C. Meitner June 18, 1947, at Odin, KS.  He passed away December 14, 1991.

She then married Merle Joseph Steiner Aug. 2, 1997, at Hoisington, KS.  He passed away March 3, 2014.

Mrs. Steiner was a Hoisington resident since 1976 coming from rural Olmitz, KS.

Loyola had been a staff nurse and OBGYN nurse for Hoisington Lutheran Hospital and Clara Barton Hospital, since 1956, retiring, after almost 40 years of service, as the director of nursing.  She also took pride in being an active farm wife.

Loyola was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Altar Society, and V.F.W. Post 7428 Auxiliary, all of Hoisington. She enjoyed gardening and was an accomplished cook, especially during harvest time.
