Jane Powers

GREAT BEND — Jane Powers, 76, died Aug. 17, 2016 at Golden Age Home, Cheney. She was born April 16, 1940 at Carroll, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Charlotte (Quinn) Danner. She married Donald E. Powers Aug. 20, 1960 at Carroll, Iowa. A Great Bend resident, Mrs. Powers was an insurance clerk at Central Kansas Medical Center for 15 years.

Mrs. Powers was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society, and was a life member of Delta Zeta Sorority. She was a long-time membership drive volunteer with Golden Belt Community Concert Association, and enjoyed square dancing, traveling and camping.

Survivors include her husband, Donald E. Powers, of Hutchinson; one son, David Powers and his wife Deana of Fort Worth, Texas; two daughters, Linda Hogg and her husband Dale of Great Bend, and Colleen Gerstenkorn and her husband Kevin of Wichita; son-in-law, Doug Coverdale of Holton; one brother, James Danner of Council Bluffs, Iowa; one sister: Judy Danner of Brewster, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Julie Coverdale.

Altar Society Rosary will be at 4 p.m. and Vigil will be at 7 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 21, 2016 at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Aug. 22, 2016 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend with Father Ted Stoecklein celebrating. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery. Roberta Mae Whithorn

Whithorn, RobertaGREAT BEND — Roberta Mae Whithorn, 86, died August 17, 2016 at Great Bend Regional Hospital, Great Bend. She was born July 10, 1930 at Hutchinson, the daughter of Frank and Leona Beatrice (Bowman) Houston.

She married Lewis Martin Whithorn October 26, 1947 at Hutchinson, Kansas.  He died February 28, 2000. A Great Bend resident since 1946, Mrs. Whithorn was a homemaker, working for Harding Glass for a time. She was an avid bowler, and enjoyed gardening, quilting and woodcarving.

Survivors include two sons: Jeffrey D. Whithorn and his wife Ann of Salina, and Michael Lewis Whithorn of Goddard; and five grandchildren: Melody, Stephanie, Harmony, Sean and Christopher. She was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Yaeden.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 20, 2016 at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Aaron Withrow officiating. Burial will be at noon, Saturday, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may call from noon to 8:00 p.m., Friday, August 19, 2016 at Bryant Funeral Home. Wilma Lucille “Lu” Benzel

Wilma Lucille “Lu” Benzel, 79, died Jan. 3, 2016. She was born Aug. 2, 1936, in Florence, Kansas, the daughter of Howard and Hazel Smith.
Lu graduated from Augusta High School in 1954, and from Denver Colorado Women’s College in 1956. During 22 years of marriage to Lawrence Benzel, two children were born. Lu lived in Wheatland, California for 43 years and worked as a secretary for Marysville High School for 18 years. In 1988, Lu became office manager for Brown’s Valley Realty and later moved to Logue Realty until she retired. She was a member of Wheatland Christian Church, Business and Professional Women of America, and the Rebecca Lodge.
Survivors include: a brother, Bill Smith and wife Kathy of Topeka; son, Mike Benzel and wife Kelly of Macksville; daughter, Karen Schwane of Hagerman, Idaho; a grandson, three grandaughters, three great grandchildren, two nieces, and two nephews.

He was a United States Army veteran, serving during World War II.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, American Legion Argonne Post 180, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Morris-McFadden Post #3111, all of Great Bend.

She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and the Altar Society, and a former member of American Legion Argonne Post 180 Auxiliary, all of Great Bend.

She attended grade school in rural schools and graduated from Dodge City High School. Upon graduation, Ruth worked as a secretary and in bookkeeping positions and was a bank teller at Fidelity State Bank, Dodge City, prior to her marriage. She married Virgil Shank March 3, 1967 at Dodge City, and became mother to Martin “Marty” Shank and Kathleen “Kathy” Shank.  Virgil died January 25, 1973.

She owned and operated Personally for You Uniform Shop on the 281 By-pass until retiring in 1998.

Mrs. Shank was a Great Bend, Kansas resident since 1967.

As an active member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, where she served as organist and church secretary for many years. Ruth loved music and served as church organist in various churches since the age of 12 until ill health prevented in 2014. She was an avid reader and loved her many friends and family.

 

Survivors include one son: Marty Shank and wife Debra of Great Bend; one daughter: Kathy Shull and her husband Jeff of Great Bend; one sister, LaDonna Dirks of Great Bend; two grandchildren, Alissa Shull and Kara Shull; and three great-grandchildren, Emmy Jo Schridde, Ellie Mae Schridde and Eastyn Rylie Schridde. She was preceded in death by her parents. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, yet warmly welcomed in heaven.
