TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Latest on the midterm election in Kansas (all times local):

Freshman Republican Rep. Roger Marshall has won re-election in his western Kansas congressional district.

Marshall easily prevailed in Tuesday’s election over Democrat Alan LaPolice in the 1st District.

The district covers the western two-thirds of Kansas and is among the safest for the GOP in the nation. Republicans have represented western Kansas in Congress for more than 60 years.

Marshall is a Great Bend physician who won the seat with establishment GOP support in 2016 by ousting tea party Rep. Tim Huelskamp in the primary.

LaPolice was making his third run for the seat. He also lost to Marshall in the 2016 general election running as an independent candidate and unsuccessfully challenged Huelskamp in the GOP primary in 2014. He is an Army veteran who farms near Clyde.

Candidates interviewing for hospital administrator position in Great Bend

When The University of Kansas Health System conducted their “ribbon tying” in late September at the Great Bend Campus, staff announced that several candidates had applied for the administrator position for the hospital.

Great Bend Chamber of Commerce CEO Jan Peters told the Great Bend City Council Monday night that she has assisted with community tours with two candidates and expects a third candidate to take a community tour in a couple weeks.

Jodi Schmidt serves as the Executive Director for Regional Development at The University of Kansas Health System but has been serving as the interim administrator at the Great Bend Campus since the acquisition.

The University of Kansas Health System announced last April their intent of purchasing Great Bend Regional Hospital. The acquisition became official August 1.

County clerk assumes role of Ness Co. sheriff after resignations

NESS CITY — The Ness County Sheriff’s Office is in a state of upheaval Tuesday, as the majority of the department turned in their resignations.

According to a social media report, the undersheriff, three deputies and a dispatcher resigned as of 10:50 a.m. Tuesday.

With a vacancy in the sheriff’s position after former Sheriff Bryan Whipple resigned following federal firearms charges, and Undersheriff William Sutton’s resignation today, the position of sheriff falls upon Ness County Clerk Renee Kerr.

“Due to the resignation of the undersheriff and the majority of the department, County Clerk Renee Kerr has assumed the duties of sheriff, per KSA 19-804a,” Kerr said in a prepared statement. “An emergency declaration has been signed and mutual aid is forthcoming.”

KSA 19-804a reads: “When there shall be no sheriff or undersheriff in any county, it shall be the duty of the county clerk to exercise all the powers and duties of the sheriff of such clerk’s county until a sheriff be elected or qualified.”

In a statement, Kerr said she had appointed Brandon Mitchell — the Republican Party’s nominee to replace Whipple — as undersheriff and Travis Rothe as a deputy.

She did not comment on why the resignations occurred, but said there is a plan in the works and mutual aid from other counties has been requested. Officers from Hodgeman County will assist, she said, noting officers from other neighboring counties also are expected.

On Tuesday, Kerr, who has no law enforcement experience, is also in the midst of administering an election in her role of county clerk, a position she has held for the past 13 years.

“We are focusing on county business and moving forward,” she said.

Ness County has a population of about 3,000 residents, with about half of those living in Ness City.

Whipple, who had served as sheriff since 2000, pleaded guilty last month to a federal firearms charge. In his plea, Whipple admitted he arranged to sell a .45 caliber pistol and ammunition to a man he knew to be a convicted felon.

As a part of that plea, Whipple resigned his position. Sentencing on the federal charge is set for Jan. 17.

Great Bend adds another expense to spruce up the Events Center

Another expense was approved Monday night to make improvements to the Great Bend Events Center. To further separate the Events Center at 3111 10th Street from the abandoned and eyesore of a hotel to the east, the City of Great Bend will paint every part of the exterior that is visible from the street for $60,950.

The paint will be a darker grey and Great Bend Community Coordinator and CVB Director Christina Hayes hopes the change will get more people calling the facility by the correct name.

The Great Bend City Council approved the bid from Brentwood Builders to paint the exterior east, front, and west side of the building. Brentwood had the lower bid of the two received and if an additional third coat of paint is needed then $9,100 can be added as an option.

Because the new entrance was added on, the Events Center has mismatched paint on the exterior. This paint project will match the new addition and old exterior. Weather permitting, Great Bend hopes the painting can be finished by the end of the year.

The paint goes onto a list of improvements that the City has made since taking over ownership of the Events Center in January 2016.

Brentwood handled $279,000 worth of renovations in 2016 that changed the entrance at the Events Center and added the Convention & Visitors Bureau office. A change order added $42,171 to the bill to repave a portion of the parking lot. Brentwood also tore down the overhead walkway that connected the Events Center and Great Bend Hotel for more than $23,000. A contract with Parr Sound and Lighting for more than $20,000 provided a digital sound system to the facility in 2016. Washington Roofing was awarded a contract to make needed repairs to the roof for more than $43,000 in 2016. The City added two overhead projectors to the Events Center for $6,755. Great Bend approved $99,000 to be spent on new carpet and tile this past August.

In the summer of 2015, Great Bend spent $10,500 for a Salina architect to design renovations for the Events Center.
