The details for Great Bend’s snow & ice removal strategy

The City of Great Bend has their plan of action concerning snow and ice control. In an 11-page report, the policy outlines the priority list of streets to be cleared and treated and how the Street Department handles the snow season.

The Priority 1 list includes portions of Main, 10th, McKinley, 6th, Cleveland, 2nd, Broadway, Washington, 24th, and streets around police and fire stations.

Great Bend City Councilmember Vicki Berryman asked Assistant Public Works Director Simon Wiley how the list of priority streets were determined.

Simon Wiley & Vicki Berryman Audio

The City Council voted 6-0 to approve the 2018-2019 Snow & Ice Removal Policy with no major changes from last year.

The application of chemicals and abrasives can melt up to two inches of snow. When there are more than two inches of snow, the sand/salt mixture will be applied after plowing or grading operations are completed.

Plows will take precautions to avoid damaging or endangering parked vehicles. However, plows will plow a distance reasonably close to parked cars so that snow does not remain on the driving surface of the roadway.

After plowing and or grading operations have been completed, operators of the loaders shall begin removal of snow from City parking lots.

Great Bend competes at Garden City debate tournament

Back row Isaiah Smith and Christopher Clarke, Front row Skylar Fletch and Malachi Wasson.

Two novice debate teams from Great Bend High School excelled last weekend in competition at Garden City High School. In what, at times, felt like a duel between Dodge City and Great Bend, the team of Skylar Fletcher and Malachi Wasson earned second-place honors.

Fletcher and Wasson beat four different teams from Dodge City and lost to Lyon’s top novice team to finish second out of 18 teams.

Also competing in the novice division were Christopher Clarke and Isaiah Smith. Smith and Clarke ended the day with two wins and three losses.

The experienced debaters did not travel this weekend as they stayed home to practice for the school play. All debaters will take next weekend off and encourage everyone to come see the talents of the high school performers in the fall production of the original “Beauty and The Beast.” While this might not be the Disney version you’re used to, it will surely be entertaining and features several members of the high school debate program.

Three different performances will be offered on Sunday, November 11 at 2 p.m, and Monday and Tuesday, November 12 and 13 at 7 p.m.

No camping at Wilson Lake Lucas Park for 4 months next summer

SYLVAN GROVE – No camping reservations for Lucas Park at Wilson Lake will be taken for four months of next year.

Repairs to a road damaged by spring rains in 2017 are expected to be underway during that time.

The decision was announced Monday morning by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the following social media post.

“An earthen slide occurred in the spring of 2017 causing damage to the steep foundation under the existing Lucas Park entrance roadway. As a result, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reduced entry traffic to 1-lane and detoured exiting traffic while they research funding and repair options.

“The Federal Highway Administration has awarded the Wilson Lake Project a grant to assist with funding repairs to the Lucas Park entrance road.

“Surveying of the area was recently completed and engineers are designing a repair strategy for construction. Following the development of a repair plan, a contract will be advertised and then awarded.

“Due to the uncertainty of when the contract will be completed and when a construction crew will mobilize, we have elected to block camping reservations for Lucas Park from May 15 through September 15, 2019. Camping will still be allowed on a first come, first served basis until construction begins.

“Once construction has commenced, all traffic to Lucas Park will be closed until the repairs are completed. We will provide further updates as they become available.

“We hope that all repairs are completed in a timely manner to minimize the impact on the recreation season.”

Commissioners vote 3-2 to provide letter of support to Rosewood Roots and Wings Foundation

In July, Rosewood Services asked for but did not receive a letter of support from Barton County Commissioners for Kansas Department of Commerce tax credits to help remodel the old E&E Glass building in Great Bend.

Monday, the Rosewood Roots and Wings Foundation requested a similar letter of support for a Kansas Department of Transportation grant to help purchase a 14-passenger vehicle for assistance with transportation operations.

Alicia Straub, who was not in favor of the letter of support in July for state tax credits for the building remodel, was also not in favor of providing a letter of support for the latest grant request.

The Rosewood Roots and Wings Foundation is a non-profit organization under the umbrella of Rosewood Services. The Director of the Foundation is Will Rains.

Commissioners eventually voted 3-2 Monday to provide the letter of support with Straub and Homer Kruckenberg voting no and Commissioners Jennifer Schartz, Kenny Schremmer and Don Davis voting yes.

The grant request from K-DOT is for $49,200 for the purchase of the vehicle and $10,000 for operational costs. The Roots and Wings Foundation will provide a $12,300 match from funds that Rains said would come from private donations.

The Great Bend City Council approved a letter of support during their meeting Monday night.
