Celestine William “Celly” Jacobs

Celestine William “Celly” Jacobs, 96, La Crosse, Kansas, died Saturday, July 20, 2019, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas.

Celly was born March 29, 1923, in Hoisington, Kansas, the son of Casper and Mary (Schmidt) Jacobs.  He was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas.  Celly loved his job as a heavy equipment operator for the Rush County Highway Department for 39 years before his retirement.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

On May 20, 1947, he married Thelma A. Herrman at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Liebenthal, Kansas.  She preceded him in death July 26, 2007.

Survivors include:  three sons, Raymond Jacobs (Marsha), Great Bend, Kansas, Kenneth Jacobs (Connie), Catawissa, Missouri, Duane Jacobs (Christi Wright), Great Bend, Kansas; one daughter, Paula Kuhn (Jed), Great Bend, Kansas; eight grandchildren, Andrea Jacobs (Dave Nokleby), Great Bend, Kansas, Gabriel Hardman (Lana), Hays, Kansas, Jacob Hardman (Randi), Lenexa, Kansas, Phillip Kuhn, New York, New York, Andrew Kuhn, Great Bend, Kansas, Austin Jacobs, Catawissa, Missouri, Jordan Jacobs, Catawissa, Missouri, and Dylan Jacobs, Catawissa, Missouri; five great grandchildren; four brothers, Ralph Jacobs, La Crosse, Kansas, Leroy Jacobs, La Crosse, Kansas, Jerry Jacobs, Hays, Kansas, and William “Bill” Jacobs, La Crosse, Kansas; and one sister, Mary Lou Warren, Wichita, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three brothers, Eugene Jacobs, Virgil Jacobs, and Daniel Jacobs; and five sisters, Leona Leiker, Albina Birney, Elenora Holzmeister, Louise Besperat, and Viola Dreher.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 25, 2019, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.  A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 P.M.

Funeral service will be Friday, July 26, 2019, at 10:00 A.M. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas, with Father Stephen Dabanka officiating.  Interment will be in La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests memorials to Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, or Friendship Meals, La Crosse, Kansas.

Samuel George “George” Keener

Samuel George “George” Keener, 88, Rush Center, Kansas, died Saturday, July 20, 2019, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas.

George was born January 10, 1931, in rural Rush County, Kansas, the son of Fred and Fannie (Schrieber) Keener.  He was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas.  He attended Chilly Knob School in Rush County, Kansas, through his 8th grade graduation.  A 1948 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Kansas, he was a lifelong farmer.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, La Crosse, Kansas; Walnut City Masonic Lodge #215, Rush Center, Kansas; the ISIS Shrine, Salina, Kansas; and the Fort Hays Shrine Club, Hays, Kansas.  He was a past member of the Rush County Amusement Company; the Rush County Fair Board; the Order of the Eastern Star; Brookdale Township Board; United Methodist Church Council; Walnut City 4-H Leader; and Rush Center Co-op Board.  He was also a former Rush County Commissioner.

A United States Army veteran, he served from 1954 to 1956 stateside during the Korean War.  He was stationed at Fort Richardson, Anchorage, Alaska, earning the rank of Sergeant.

There wasn’t anything George was afraid to tackle, and if he couldn’t get it to work the right way, there was always the “Keener Way”.

George took great pride in helping to establish the Rush County Amusement Company with the goal of bringing a home operated carnival to the local fair.  His handiwork is well established when you see and ride the carnival, the small “kiddie” cars, and the calliope which he built and donated to the fair.  He was also a long time supporter of the local 4-H clubs, being one of the first to “bid” at the food auction.

On May 5, 1957, he married the love of his life, Evelyn Joyce Greenler at Ness City, Kansas, after a brief six month courtship.  She preceded him in death July 23, 2001.

Survivors include:  three sons, Tom Keener (LeAnn), Rush Center, Kansas, Jeff Keener (Tacy), Rush Center, Kansas, and Bob Keener (Shelley), La Crosse, Kansas; five grandchildren, Scott Keener (Emily), Stephanie Goings (Jared), Samantha Tholen (David), Jacob Keener (Jessica), and Dyan Axman (Tony); five great grandchildren, Owen, Evelyn, and Quade Keener, and Luke and Loren Tholen; one brother, Bill Keener, Great Bend, Kansas, and one sister, Betty Misegadis, Rush Center, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and one brother, Ray “Pete” Keener.

Visitation will be Wednesday, July 24, 2019, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.

Church visitation will be Thursday, July 25, 2019, from 9:00 A.M. to 9:50 A.M. at the United Methodist Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Funeral service will be Thursday, July 25, 2019, at 10:00 A.M. at the United Methodist Church, La Crosse, Kansas, with Pastor Angie Vertz officiating.  Interment will be in Locust Hill Cemetery, Rush Center, Kansas.

Kenneth L. Grizzell

Kenneth L. Grizzell    
Born March 27, 1937, to Georgia Mullinex and Robert Grizzell in Great Bend, Kansas.  He passed away July 14th, 2019 in Lawrence, Kansas.  Ken graduated from Claflin High School in 1955.  He married his high school sweetheart, Suzanne Miller on March 30th, 1959.  He attended Fort Hays State University and Wichita State University with a Bachelors degree in Secondary Education and a Masters of Fine Arts.  He was an art professor at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, South Dakota.

After retiring in 1999, Ken and Sue moved to Lawrence.  He loved watching his grandchildren grow up.  He watched many basketball and soccer games, dance and music recitals.  He saw high school and college graduations.  Other loves in his life besides his family were working in his art studio creating silk screen prints.  He also loved Nebraska football.

Survivors include; wife, Suzanne of Lawrence; brother, George Grizzell of Logan, Utah; daughter Lisa Davis and son-in-law Chris Davis; grandkids, Bobby, Carly, and DJ Davis all from the Lawrence area.

Friends may sign the book 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 20, 2019, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery in Claflin.

Frieda Bernice Karst

Frieda Bernice Karst, 97, passed away July 12, 2019, at Wheatland Nursing Center, Russell, Kansas.  She was born July 26, 1921, in Russell, Kansas, the daughter of Gotfried and Helene (Stoppel) Mai.  She grew up in Russell County and attended Mount Brokaw to 8th Grade.  Frieda was baptized and confirmed in the St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, Kansas.

On November 20, 1938 she was united in marriage to Robert Karst at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in rural Russell, Kansas. To this union two daughters were born, Bonita and Brenda.  The shared 75 years of marriage together.

Frieda loved to bake, quilt, crochet and help other people. She enjoyed spending time with her family, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was a former member of the Prairie Mates E.H.U., the Milberger Church circle and helped the quilting women at the St. Mary Catholic Church at Russell, which she enjoyed very much.

She is survived by her two daughters; Bonita Ney and husband Merlin of Russell, and Brenda Riedl and husband Frank of Great Bend; six grandchildren, Bruce Ney of Austin, Texas, Kevin Ney of Long Beach, California, Merlin Ney, Jr. and wife Brandy of Russell, Jason Ney and wife Nicale of Russell, Annette Stahl of Topeka, and Matthew Riedl and wife Lori of Omaha, Nebraska; ten great grandchildren, Shannon and Shelby Ney, Kale and Luke Stahl, Jacob Ney, Jaden Ney, twins Cooper and Camry Ney, and Maci and Trent Riedl; two sisters, Nadene Albrecht of Topeka, and Jude Scheck of Hays; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister, Esther Stettinger, and a brother, Karl Mai.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m., all at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington.

Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 17, 2019, at United Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Milberger, with Sharon Custer, PMA and Rev. Martin Albrecht presiding. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Galatia.

Betty Jane Robinson

GREAT BEND – Betty Jane Robinson, 77, passed away July 12, 2019, at Via Christi Village of Hays. She was born August 22, 1941, at Great Bend, to Alvin Henry and Emma Louise (Hommon) Otte.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, living in Colorado for a while, Betty worked at Larned State Hospital for over 17 years as an RN, more recently volunteering for RSVP. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, 4-H Alumni and GBHS Class of 1959. She loved her dog, Susie, and enjoyed playing Pitch.

Survivors include, her daughter, Cherish Anne Robinson-Smetek and husband Robert of Spring, Texas; one brother, Vern Otte and wife Brenda of Leawood, Kan.; and three sisters, Arnita Schultz and husband Ron of Haviland, Alvina Mabry and husband Don of Golden, Col., and Myrna Holthaus and husband Gerald of Great Bend. She was preceded in death by her parents.

There will be no viewing, as cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, July 15, 2019, at Bryant Funeral Home.  Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 16, at Trinity United Methodist Church, with Pastor Seong Lee presiding. It has been requested by the family that you would please jot down a story or two of how Betty influenced your life, as the family will be collecting them for a scrap book.  Memorials are suggested to Golden Belt Humane Society, RSVP or Trinity United Methodist Church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Carol “LaVon” Glenn

Dateline – Ellinwood

Carol “LaVon” Glenn, 78, died July 11, 2019, at her home in Ellinwood.  She was born June 24, 1941, in St. John, Kansas.

On August 11, 1958, she married John O. Glenn, in Ellinwood. He survives.

A longtime Ellinwood resident, LaVon was a LPN working for both Home Health and Woodhaven Care Center.

LaVon was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church of Ellinwood.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, John O. Glenn, of the home; and children, Kirk Glenn and wife Debbie of Sterling, Rena Mooney and husband Mike of Bushton, Ruth Kaiser and husband Jon of Ellinwood, John Otis Glenn, III of Great Bend, and Crystal Glenn of Macksville; 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold & Ida Walters, daughter, Michelle Bigger and two brothers, Jerry and Wayne Smith.

Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date.

Mark Wayne Banks

GREAT BEND – Mark Wayne Banks, 55, passed away June 22, 2019, at his home in Great Bend. He was born January 13, 1964 at Hoisington to Charles E. & Carol (Fahlising) Banks.

Coming originally from Texas, Mark was a Great Bend resident and was a roughneck in the oilfiled.

Survivors include, his father, Charles E. Banks of Oregon; one son, Delzel Carey-Banks; two daughters, Molli Banks and Baily Banks, all of Great Bend; ex-wife, Jacqueline (Jake) Urban of Great Bend; and a step brother, Richard Ward of Great Bend. He was preceded in death by his mother, Carol Cook; two step fathers, Phil Ward and Dennis Cook; and sister, Cara Banks.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Service are pending at a later date, however, friends my stop by the children’s home. Memorials are suggested to the Mark Banks Funeral Expense Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

GREAT BEND – Eugene Ernest Buresh, the son of Ernest and Merna (Cassell) Buresh, was born on May 23, 1942, in Davenport, Nebraska. He passed away on June 24, 2019, at his home in Great Bend, Kansas at the age of 77 years, 1 month, 1 day.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, July 13, 2019, at 1st Presbyterian Church, Great Bend, with Pastor Kathie Luke presiding. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date in Salem, Nebraska.

Timothy Harlan Parr

Dateline: Junction City, Kansas

Timothy Harlan Parr, 63, passed away July 3, 2019, at his home in Junction City.  Tim was born May 5, 1956, at Great Bend, to Harlan and Mary Lou (Fulgroat) Parr.

Tim, a resident of Junction City, coming from Great Bend, was a machinist working previously at Plating, Inc. and Rice Engineering. He served his country in the U.S. Army, earning the rank of PFC.

Survivors include one daughter, Tiffany Parr of Hutchinson; two brothers, Randy Parr and wife Lisa of Great Bend, and Gary Parr and fiancée Julie Sanders of Great Bend; and two sisters, Sue Miller of Lakewood, Col. and Cheryl Smith and husband Russ of Liberal.

Graveside services and inurnment will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, July 12, 2019, at Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend, with Pastor Dwight Dozier. Military Rites will be conducted by Ft. Riley Honor Guard and American Legion Riders Post 180.   Memorials have been suggested to Timothy Parr Expense Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home
